With the Bucs about to play a game in mid-December to begin their playoff march, Joe sure would like to see Joe Tryon-Shoyinka throw it into overdrive.
Now granted he’s been pretty much a part-time player. So the rookie hasn’t had a lot of snaps. But if you compare his numbers to other Bucs rookie pass rushers this century, it makes Joe squirm in his office chair.
The game of football is not played on a computer screen. JTS has been in position to make plays, including a handful of sacks, but somehow an opposing quarterback has squirmed away.
This is not lost on Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.
“We have to be able to finish at the top of the play,” Bowles said of JTS’s near-misses. “We talked about it and we continue to talk about it and we work on it. He understands that. We look forward to that changing hopefully in the near future.”
This is the time JTS needs to begin not just making more plays but finishing more plays. Joe loves Jason Pierre-Paul but that damn torn rotator cuff has just about rendered JPP impotent on the pass rush.
JPP hasn’t had a sack since the Bears game on Oct. 24. That’s also the last time he had a quarterback hit. Anyone who thinks that torn rotator cuff hasn’t robbed JPP of his pass-rushing ability is fooling himself.
It makes the need for JTS to show up and bury Josh Allen a couple of times Sunday all the more important.

JPP shouldn’t be on the field & should be the rotational backup/emergency role unfortunately. JPP is injured…no sense in tossing him out there when JTS is there.

It’s not just Tyron that has failed to finish the qb off. White has to be the worst offender, sometimes just blowing oast the sidestep. All of our guys seems to just try to grab them up around the shoulders and a few QBs have just ducked under it

He’s a rookie, you should never expect much from a rookie, in particular a 2nd round pass rusher, they almost never ever work out in their rookie year.
However he’s shown enough promise that I think it’s fair to believe he’s going to be a very good player next year.
But for this year, keep expectations low.

Bowles has been around long enough to know what JTS can/can’t execute consistently on. They see the guy at practice against Brady/Leftwich…..Vet QBs/OCs will go after him no different than when they went after our 4th string CB. He’s super young and one dimensional…..I think next year he takes on much more responsibility but this year his role will always be very specific where JPP is capable of reading/reacting.

It’s a little concerning. He averages playing nearly 43% of the snaps over 12 games. I’d like to see a tad more production but he’s a rookie. We won’t really know until he’s playing 80%+ of the snaps.

I think he needs to hit the weights and and bulk up for next season. He’s crazy fast, but when the tackle or guard are centered on him, he’s done. Cam Gil has run over a few tackles. I’d love to see some more.

He’s not played as much as other rookies in the past may have because of the veteran talent ahead of him. When he has played, he’s played well. He has missed a few tackles and sacks, but he was out of football last year.
I think the way they are bringing him along is excellent.

Warren Sapp… 3 sacks as a rookie.
Ronde Barber… inactive 15 games as a rookie.
Derrick Brooks… showed promise as a rookie but wasn’t anything special.
John Lynch… only started 4 games, only had 13 tackles total.
That’s your HOF list of players that got us our first SB, none of them did a lot their rookie season. Brooks had the easiest position to excel at as a rookie, and he was OK. It took Lynch many years to become a good player, and even more to become a great player.
Yeah, there’s some players who come out swinging their rookie years, and a lot of times they flame out from there. But you really shouldn’t ever judge rookies, because so many HOF players didn’t do squat their rookie year. Obviously not saying Tryon is a HOFer, just that he’s shown promise, and it’s dangerous to bet on rookies for production. Sure, you might get a Winfield Jr, who excelled from day one, but you also might get a Lynch, that takes 5 years before to become a pro-bowler.

Plan 9 from Outer Space is a bust. He is like a ragdoll out there. Maybe he could play another position. He has no power. None. Get him out.

I’m very happy with his play. If he were on a different team, his number would be much better because he’s have a lot more snaps.

It’s ridiculous to expect a rookie to shoulder more than what the 3 most experienced veteran defensive linemen making millions more who aren’t doing enough no matter his draft position. I think he’s doing ok as a rookie who sat out an entire season of football. He’s not or problem on defense

Shaq was an undrafted free agent and was still promising as a rookie. Cloud 9er is an untested rookie who needs to show a bit more playing on the line with Shaq, Vea and Suh.

JTS snap numbers have gone up. He needs to learn to finish and get the sack.
JPP is useless in pass and run defense.
The colts abused him on that big final drive, and the falcons also had their way with him. He is a liability and should be reduced to 18-25 snaps a game.

As a guy who is rehabbing a partial to fully torn rotator cuff, I have absolutely NO IDEA how JPP could possibly play football. His ability to extend his arm above his head has to be zero. His ability to reach out sideways and try to tackle someone who is running full speed has to be about zero. I understand he gets shot up before games, but wow, it’s just amazing. Shoulder injuries are a complete b(tch.

JTS needs to decide if he’s a speed rusher, a bull rusher, or a hybrid. He has some good traits so far that should translate into production in a year or so, but right now, he needs to train either for speed or for power. He seems like he hasn’t decided which type of rusher he is best at. I’d be curious to see how his play compares to other rookie pass-rushers in the last 10 years for a projection as to what he might become. GO BUCS!!

For instance, I’d say Shaq is a speed rusher, Suh and Vea are bull rushers, and JPP is a hybrid. That’s their individual niches and all can be elite at times. Not sure which mold JTS fits into just yet. I’m anxious to watch the progression of JTS the next few years….he does have a great motor and is always trying hard.

Missing last year playing football has to be affecting his play. I love this kids motor and when he finally puts it all together and get a little stronger he will be a QB’s worst nightmare.

Need more Cam Gill……and….not saying JTS9 is a bust…..but he may not be as good as we thought he would be…….time will tell…
JPP is a concern……he wants to play hurt….he insists on playing hurt….he demands to play hurt……and he’s getting his way….unfortunately.

They could start helping him out by not lining him up at freaking DT in pass rushing situations. I can’t think of a better way to absolutely neuter his best attribute…..speed. What a bonehead alignment to put that guy in.

The real test is if he can drop into coverage while still playing the run….

This chat tends to think rookies should be a lot better then they are.
Wirfs last year was the exception of exception guys. JTS is imo performing above expectations when he is played.

JTS is fast –and that may be just what we need to keep Allen from being Bills leading rusher.. Bills O line is not top notch-so our pass rush should be very effective–if not in sacks but chasing Allen out of pocket..

The kid was out of football for an entire year! There is no reason to either rush his development OR wear him out in the regular season.

and we currently have anthony nelson on the roster, who is also a big time misser…
a misser in my book is someone who almost makes the play but more often than not misses out…

No one should be expecting JTS TO be JPP in his rookie year. He will get stronger in the next couple of years. To even think he’s a bust is just wrong.

Whiffing on tackles is not a rookie problem. It is a talent problem. JTS has little potential.

JTS will see the field a lot in this game, especially in a spy role with a good scrambling QB. He’s gonna make some splash plays.

I agree, @gp, that most likely, JTS will be a hybrid. I think he needs to work most on his bull rush. We’ll see in the next year or so what drive/motivation he has. I think it’s possible he could be a Shaq or Von Miller-type, but we’ll see. GO BUCS!!

It seems very obvious to me that-
1. He’s a rookie learning a defense and not completely playing by instinct
2. He is going to be very good and near the league leaders in sacks by year 3.
3. He needs to step up this week and down the stretch so they can rest JPP
