Bucs Crash Draft Party
April 25th, 2010Joe heard Bucs general manager Mark Dominik talk about how deep this last week’s draft was, Joe was becoming numb.
Apparently Dominik was right, at least on paper, at least a few hours after the draft ended, which is terribly premature to judge how a draft should or will be ranked.
Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com is giving out his grades already and he’s ready to laud Dominik has having one of the top draft classes of the year.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Best pick: I like the choice of receiver Arrelious Benn in the second round. He has loads of talent and will become Josh Freeman’s go-to receiver.
Questionable move: Receiver Mike Williams quit the Syracuse football team, which dropped him down. But he is a big-time talent who might turn out to be a heck of a player.
Third-day gem: Dekoda Watson is an athletic linebacker who fits in perfectly with what Tampa Bay wants to do. Getting him in Round 7 is a steal.
Analysis: I absolutely love their draft. General manager Mark Dominik did a great job with a lot of picks. The Bucs have a great young group to build around.
Again, it’s way too early to hand out grades. On paper, it looks like Dominik and his staff got the job done.

Yeah, I just was reading that article, Tampa did good in the draft according to just about every “expert”. Dom did his job, and the pressure will now be on Coach Morris to produce.
April 25th, 2010 at 9:44 am
i hope we sign that o-lineman brandon carter he dident get drafted i really love all our picks at first i did not like the punter pick but i remember watching a game last year between fsu and vt and the punter that we got had like 3 punts over 60 yards and changed the game
April 25th, 2010 at 9:54 am
This thread will get very little commentary or most of the commentary will be that the guy at CBS is an idiot.
April 25th, 2010 at 10:23 am
I must say I can’t recall the last time the bucs draft was so well received nationally.
Looks like some authentic “buzz” has been created.
If they could snatch a couple of victories at the beginning of the season, the blackout problem may be solved.
I hope Mr. Benn and Mr. Williams are very quick learners!
April 25th, 2010 at 10:45 am
I agree about signing Brandon Carter as a FA. Is there any email where the fans can send in messages stating such a desire?
April 25th, 2010 at 10:46 am
I love this draft.
Jim Buc, I fear you are correct, but I think it is because haters are more vocal than fans.
For example, Radio Mushmouth posted 40 angry, spiteful comments across the boards over the draft. Now that’s a lot of hate.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:01 am
Would you beleive the Saints signed him. they have to have SOMEONE to block Gerald…;)
April 25th, 2010 at 11:01 am
Brandon Carter
April 25th, 2010 at 11:05 am
Eric’s alternative draft:
1. Gerald McCoy
2 (a) Traded for Brandon Marshall (100+ catchtes 3 straight years)
2. (B) Carlos Dunlap
5. Traded for Santonio Holmes. (SB MVP)
Wherefore, I am unprepared to break into hysterical jubilation until time goes by and I compare what we got to what could have been.
Fair enough Rah Lovers?
I wonder what the CBS guy would say about that one?
April 25th, 2010 at 11:07 am
JoeBuc hate accusations in 3………….2……………….1………………
April 25th, 2010 at 11:09 am
Jimbuc I meant, sorry Mr. Joe!
April 25th, 2010 at 11:11 am
Agree with the other Eric. This draft has been the most well received in recent memory to me as well.
I am most interested in McCoy and the 2 WRs. One writer said that 6 of the picks could be immediate starters. That would be startling. I can definitely see 3 right off the bat (McCoy, Benn, Bowden). And if Williams is as good as he says he is then maybe he will crack the lineup.
2 of their biggest weaknesses (DT, WR), they did address. I would have liked another DE and RB to the fold. The Bucs are really counting on the RBs to stay healthy and Moore and Crowder to get better at DE. That will be something to watch.
But everyone should remember that Rah is still the head coach. A competent coach would have gotten at least 6 wins out of the group last season. Rah just isn’t that good in making game day decisions. So any enthusiasm I might have is tempered by who is walking the sidelines.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:27 am
This was a solid draft. I love the Price pick. Wouldve been interesting to watch if Eversen Griffen wouldn’t have been picked right before Williams. I am so glad we didn’t get Blount. There is obviously more there than the punch. We really looked at him and decided no. Jevan Snead could turn into a great backup. He had terrible coaching at mississippi but has a pro arm and body. I will feel better in a year with him than JJ. Wouldn’t be shocked if Grimm didn’t turn into a player. His skills aren’t bad and he has lived with a chip on his shoulder.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:27 am
Eric’s draft would have been 10 times better….
April 25th, 2010 at 11:28 am
Eric S with an oldy but goody . . . the “Yeh, but.” Good draft yes, but Morris is still a bum who cannot coach so all is for naught. LOL.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:41 am
LOL was wondering what you meant Eric.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:47 am
Eric and Radio Mushmouth, Get off your knees and take Brandon Marshall out of your mouth…
April 25th, 2010 at 11:48 am
I’m excited, we didn’t address the DE or Safety position’s very well but like Raheem has said on a number of occasions lately “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. I think our team is going to be very improved this season and if next year we can add a quality DE and Safety or if the ones we have really elevate their game then watch out for the Bucs in 2012!
April 25th, 2010 at 11:54 am
Eric – at face value I have to say that at 1st glance your draft would have been preferred by some
BUT
1. Brandon Marshall’s contract in Miami doesn’t fit with the Bucs plans – too much $$$
2. I have some concerns about Dunlap – same as Williams to be specific. Dunlap cost his team a national championship because of his drinking – that’s quitting on your team or an alcoholic.
3. The method that Dominik pursued is similar to the Sapp/Brooks class and it builds for the future – your method is more Jon Gruden win now.
April 25th, 2010 at 11:54 am
@JimBuc – who’s being negative now?
April 25th, 2010 at 11:57 am
You are a class act DH!
April 25th, 2010 at 11:59 am
While I think this draft class REALLY improves the D-Line it does nothing to improve the LB corp.
I think that Gregg White should have a return to 2008 form
Hopefully with the disruption of McCoy and Price up front Rudd will get back to 2008 form (games 1-10).
The ONLY complaint I have about this drafting class is the Bucs inability to address the Sears &/or Penn situation(s)
April 25th, 2010 at 12:04 pm
@Mr. lucky
True enough about the contract.
But i disagree about “win now”, both Marshall and Holmes are young players. Not like i am advocating bringing in Mason from the Ravens!
But, i do like winning!
i see from the Rah supporters that winning isnt untill 2012!
What was the last team that built solely through the draft like this and suffered repeated losing seasons? I have to go back to Jimmy Johnson and the Cowboys!
April 25th, 2010 at 12:10 pm
I don’t think it is negative to question draft moves.
I think it is ridiculously negative to be negative before the draft and then, because you were negative before, to refuse to even acknowledge a good draft. BIG DIFFERENCE
April 25th, 2010 at 12:13 pm
20+ comments and I only see one usage of the word “idiot”. I guess JimBuc is wrong again.
You know, I bet JimBuc is this little zit-faced kid who probably wasn’t alive back in the early 90’s when the Bucs last sucked like they did last season.
April 25th, 2010 at 12:13 pm
Jimbuc
Looks like your “very little commentary” prediction aint holding up!
April 25th, 2010 at 12:17 pm
I am glad it is not, and I am glad that most of it is reasonable (except DH).
Eric, one thing on your B. Marshall comments. I agree he is crazy talented but no way Bucs take him. One of the signature flaws of the Gru/Allen era was taking guys to help right now without other consideration. For better or worse, the Bucs are tryign to avoid that right now. They probably take Marshall three or four yearsngrom now (if they are competitive) but not now. I know you disagree with that philospohy, but that is what they are doing so the thought that they would take Marshall was always a non-starter. Not saying right or wrong, just saying.
April 25th, 2010 at 12:20 pm
Louie — I have also been referred to by some here as an old cremudgeon, so I guess people take my comments in different ways. So be it.
I am not saying that people need to be positive or negative, just reasonable. Funny how that is such an offensive comment here. LOL
April 25th, 2010 at 12:22 pm
If Morris wins 8 or more games this season, then I will be impressed. If not he should be immediately fired. The guy was incompetent last season. Costing the team with a penalty against himself. Not having the right personnel in the game. Time management that boggled the mind. Not realizing until it was too late that the OC and DC were not good fits. I could go on and on and on about this buffoon. I am sorry, but I pay too much money to let this circus continue this season. 6 wins won’t do it for me.
April 25th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
Mr. Lucky,
“While I think this draft class REALLY improves the D-Line it does nothing to improve the LB corp”
as I’m sure you are aware everything starts In the iddle of the d-line in the Tampa2. The picks they made to improve the line will only not only make for a better pass rush but should make every position on the defense more effective.
THe Bucs obviously feel, as do I, that they have solid linebackers if they can concentrate on the job they are supposed to do and not have to worry about 225lb running backs busting through the line with a full head of steam on every play.
April 25th, 2010 at 12:27 pm
@Jimbuc,
How do you square the “other considerations” with drafting Williams?
April 25th, 2010 at 1:34 pm
Very, very solid draft. If we even get average production out of the top 5 picks, we’re light years better than what we had.
April 25th, 2010 at 1:38 pm
The colts build soely trough the draft, no expensive free agents and they even let quality recievers walk over big money. I don’t think any buc fan would mind it if our team wins as many games as the colts do
April 25th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
with all the disruption up front, the LBs should be able to fly to the ball. that plays to the strengths of Geno Hayes and Quincy Black….look for a big year by them. if they dont have to deal with O-linemen consistently in the 2nd level, they can really make some things happen. we already know Ruud can be a solid player, so he should revert to his old form. and for all u people STILL crying about Brandon Marshall…he was a 4th round draft pick. thats just ONE example of the possibility of finding a playmaker (::cough:: Mike Williams) in the mid to late rounds. im just sayin…
April 25th, 2010 at 1:57 pm
Personally I do feel we upgraded the linebacking corps.
We added two guys that are fast and talented in Dekoda
Watson and Rico Mccoy. They give us depth and talent where it
didn’t really exist before. Also it gives us two fast, good
tackling special teamers. I thought those were great additions…
especially for one 7th rd pick.. Nice job!
April 25th, 2010 at 1:57 pm
@Eric I didn’t mean to say I don’t think they will win any games this and next year. I’m trying to say that I feel they can be Super Bowl contenders in 2012 which is a gigantic leap from a three win season last year
April 25th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
@d-money
I agree with what you are saying. My concern is this:
1. Ruud did fine with Brooks – last year Derrick wasn’t there and Barrett didn’t show up
2. Geno Hayes flashed show good things but Quincy Black???
I’ll give Raheem the benefit on the LB corps at this time. If the D-Line plays like we anticipate it should improve Ruud’s play and Hayes.
April 25th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
@Eric S
I’m sorry to say but I’ve lowered my expectations A LOT!
8 wins next year would give Rah-Rah a HUGE contract extension
April 25th, 2010 at 2:18 pm
If idiots grew on trees, this place would be an orchard…
April 25th, 2010 at 2:36 pm
As a prime example of an idiot you would know DH.
While the Bucs may have crashed the draft party (Raiders did likewise) it seems DH crashed the pessimist’s party.
April 25th, 2010 at 3:07 pm
I can only consume hysterical jubilation in small doses.
@Justin
Your right about the Colts, they have “built through the draft”. I stand corrected.
April 25th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
Eric, I am not sure I follow the “other considerations” issue. I think you mean why is Marshall disqualified but Willaims not? If so, that is an apple to orange comparison except for the generalized connection that both have “character” issues. However, read about Williams actual situation and you will see it is not the same as Marshall. Also, the risk/reward is way, wat differerent. The Bucs got a guy that coul potentially be Marshall and they got him for next to nothing and at a time when he will just be a regular guy trying to make the team. If the Bucs brought Marshall here he would have been a bona fide start and leader of the team and it would have cost a lot more in picks (was it two seconds?). So, not sure that is an accruate comparison, except from about 20,000 feet.
