Raheem Talks About His Defensive Tackle Plans

April 24th, 2010

Raheem The Dream had a lot to say about drafting defensive tackles Brian Price and Gerald McCoy.

Boil down all the Raheem-speak, per the video of hisFriday night news conference on Buccaneers.com,  and the head coach basically said he’ll figure out later where and how the newbies will play with Roy Miller.  And all that really mattered in the draft was improving the talent on the line and building a pass rush.

We can even put this thing as far as to a four-man rotation to keep it fresh. We do live in Tampa. It’s really hot. We’re talking about bigger men. And we’re talking about creating a pass rush,” Raheem The Dream said. “These young men and these guys all putting together and playing together creates a lot of disruption for people. Creates problems in  protection. Creates mismatches up front. And we look forward to those opportunites to get them out there.

You gotta get after people’s quarterbacks. …I don’t want to take Rod Marinell’s credit, but he used to say, ‘Hey, if we’re playing our game up front, we can give everybody else behind us a pink slip and we can go to work and we can end this game ourself.’ And that’s never been truer. You know, you get those guys up front humming, you know it makes nothing but your linebackers better, it makes your secondary better. It makes everybody better.”

Mark Dominik also reminded the media how much success the Bucs have had over the years rotating the defensive line. And Dominik said snagging Price met the Bucs’ goals, which included drafting players from big programs who were three-year starters.

The defensive coordinator now has big time young talent at defensive tackle. Joe thinks that’s great.

Now it’s on Raheem The Dream to make them productive.

Joe it was also interesting to see in another buccaneers.com video that Jim Abrams, the buc’s west coast scout said explicitly that he believes that Price “fits as a nose tackle bc of his natural strength.” Sounds like Roy Miller will be the first guy off the bench while McCoy and Price will line up next to each other.

Now it’s on Raheem the Dream to make them productive. That is the true question, Don’t you think? I still think we’re looking at a 4-12 season under the “Dreams” guidance.

All I can say is yahoooo!!!

I’m glad that the Bucs used their picks for defense. What also give me some piece of mind is reading that the Bucs have a “plan” even if it only consists of drafting 3-year starters from big programs.

I HOPE this is a return to “Dungy-ball” and if it is I wouldn’t mind a losing season (well I would mind but not as much)

  4. SLY Says:

Also don’t forget Raheem mixed things up with a 5 man line at times. This is a good draft, don’t be surprised f they trade a 7th round pick for a WR.

  5. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Woohooo!! I’m so excited we used a critical high 2nd rounder on a back-up rotation player !!

Then to hear mushmouth Raheem bumble and stumble over an idiotic explanation makes me feel even better about it !!

are you people serious ?? Please tell me you are simply blinded by optimism , and not this stupid….

  6. Eric Says:

Improving the last place run defense is a huge priority and they should be commended for trying to do that.

Im slightly worried as to this “disruption v. production” idea about McCoy. The other folks who will now make plays were part of a horrific defensive unit. Seems to me like Sapp was disruptive AND productive, as are other great DT’s. Explaining away lack of tackles and sacks makes me vervous, even if he gives a great press conference.

Sctraching my head about a receiver who caught two td’s and less than 500 yards vs. one who had over 1000 yards and ten td’s (Tate).

If Benn is the only help five gets i will be very disapointed, especially given who we could have had with AB or trade.

Some talented players but some major question marks IMO.

  7. Radio Mushmouth Says:

    @ Eric

1st of all, Undertackles aren’t drafted to stop the run. We needed a defensive end most of all ….with all the good players like Carlos Dunlap on the board, we selected a back-up rotation guy instead.

This was stupid, they can NOT be commended for it, IMO.

As for Benn, I like him as a player. His stats did suck but he never had much help at Illinois. He is definitely a bigger risk though. Golden Tate would have been a much safer pick….which of course is why we didn’t do it. We’re morons.

  8. Radio Mushmouth Says:

…It’s nice to see a 3-13 team , that did nothing in free agency , thinks it’s time to build a “4 man rotation” at one position…

Bwahahahaha!! Raheem, i will throw a party the day they fire your dumb ass

    Joe here,

Radio – Miller played his share of nose last year, and Steve White wrote about months ago how the Bucs likely will give him every chance to start at nose. …Where Price is going to fit into all this will be interesting.

  10. Radio Mushmouth Says:

It will not be interesting Joe …it will be painful….painful to watch…

  11. trguy12 Says:

I personally like the drafting of Mccoy and Price….in the Sapp and Mcfarland model. They are both very disruptive and we have become much more talented where we needed it most. I think Miller will rotate in both spots to keep both guys fresh.
I don’t understand why some people keep saying Price was drafted to back up Mccoy….seems like it’s obviously not the case. Don’t slash your wrists yet….I think both of these guys will be good.

  12. Eric Says:

    @Radio

Now about that we are in total agreement! Dunlop would have been a better selection.

And the pain wont stop when we go to offense with a young franchise QB and only one proven offensive playmaker. That will be sickening, not interesting.

And they aint finding no gems in the freakin seventh round!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I dont care how many picks they have there!

  13. Lakeland Bob Says:

Radio-if your so damm smart, why are spending all your time ripping the bucs.Surely, some NFL team could use your insightful services. The west coast scout says that Price is ideal fit in the nose tackle position, but you know a hell of a lot more than he does.Give us a break, you,ve already made your point about twenty times. Some of us are trying to enjoy this draft and you.re a real bummer.

  14. Radio Mushmouth Says:

    Bob,

If a complete hack like Mark Dumbassnik can get a job as an NFL GM, then who knows , maybe I can too one day. LOL

Sorry, I will try to be more positive.

  15. Mr. lucky Says:

Anyone notice that JimBuc has been strangely quite?

I guess they don’t have WiFi in the Glazer’s suite?

  16. Trguy12 Says:

Who does everyone think will be the next draft pick?
I’d like to see Griffin, Carlton Mitchell, or
Gilyard. I have a feeling they will go o line though.

Since the Bucs will be on the clock in less than 10 hours here’s my wishlist:

    1. SUH – DEFENSE
    2A. DEFENSE
    2B. DEFENSE
    3. WR or TEBOW
    4. DEFENSE

After those top 5 give me a bunch of Sammy Stroughters or Biggers.

Well Since Suh was taken as well as Tebow (I’m rooting or Denver now) I guess I can’t complain can I?

  18. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Mr. Lucky – you are always welcome to complain. 😉

Looks like Biggers won’t see the field this year, if Talib stays out of trouble.

  19. CharlieB Says:

    Joe,

Hopefully Biggers and Myron Lewis can push Mack for the Nickel position, as that seems to be where we were weakest in past coverage. I’d still like to see us draft a Safety, but I guess Sean Jones is going to be our answer this year at Strong Safety.

  20. Radio Mushmouth Says:

    We just drafted Mike Williams.

So much for the “character guys only” mantra…LOL

  21. JimBuc Says:

Mr. Lucky, I am still here and still amazed at all the negativity. I mean isn’t is absolutely shocking that Radio Mucxhmouth was a “hater” before this draft and he remains one after? Absolutely SHOCKING!!!!
