Return Of The Pass Rush?

November 24th, 2021

Return sparked domino effect?

Yes, Joe understands cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting made a huge impression on Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians returning to the starting lineup for the first time since the season-opener.

SMB dislocated an elbow back in that game and hadn’t played at all until Monday night. Boy, he was missed.

Now did SMB’s presence in the secondary allow Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles to unleash the hounds and rush Danny Dimes? The Bucs did have two sacks and nine quarterback hits.

Jordan Raanan of BSPN, who covers the Giants for the four-letter, had interesting pass-rushing stats from the game.

Yes, Joe knows the Giants have a bad offensive line. But if the Bucs put more pressure on Danny Dimes than anyone else, that tells Joe that the Bucs ramped up their pass rush game Monday night.

Joe thinks it is a little more than just curious that the Bucs had a strong pass rush on the very same night SMB was back.

Like the Bucs did with Devin White, could Bowles have been using linebackers some to cover real estate in passing situations previously to help the weakened secondary? And with SMB back that allowed Bowles to tell his pass rushers to pin their ears back and attack?

Complementary football, simple. You MUST have both in order for it to be effective. It is not a coincidence.

It’s almost like playing Joe Tryon and Anthony Nelson more when JPP has a torn rotator cuff helps….wow

  3. Medicated Pete Says:

Pete wonders how sore SMB is after playing a full game. Maybe Rocket Riley (who hangs out in the parking lot all day) can ask him?

Stats can be misleading too though Joe. The 2 sacks we got on Jones occurred back-to-back on the Giants very last series of the game, 1 by Gill the other by Nelson. they’re still sacks obviously, but the game was salted away long before that.

Of the 9 QB Hits, our starters got 6 of those (LVD 1; White 1; Shaq 2; Suh 2). The Bucs’ pass rush was much better I thought, but there were a lot of plays when Jones had quite a bit of time to go through his progressions. The biggest difference from recent games IMO is that our LBs & Secondary provided much better coverage.

Joe Tryon rushing from the inside was very effective as he was able to get pressure often

A good (or even average) defensive secondary aids the pass rush. With career special teamers and street free agents manning the CB positions, there was lots of padding. This gave receivers early separation, enabling even half-rate QBs to get rid of the ball quickly. That kills your QB pressures (sacks, hits, hurries).

@medpete. SMB is in his early 20s. If he gets sore from anything other than contact I have lost all hope for this generation.

As far as pressure goes, am I the only one that notices that most QBs try to escape out of the back of the pocket while Brady steps up past the pressure and let’s it go behind him. Has to be comforting for tackles to know that if the rusher goes outside they can push them past Brady.

The Devin White pass rushes were effective leading directly to intercepton to mcClendon–good game plan made possible by being allowed to pin his ears back because he is not in pass coverage.

I thought your last paragraph (especially the first question in your last paragraph) was already just understood and apparent that it was indeed the case….

And I would say, not only that it was indeed the case due to the weakened secondary, but even more so due to LVD being out injured for a period as well

    JOE

Your last paragraph says it all. Look at some games when LVD & SMB & Davis were all out. Everyone was wondering where D White went…. He played a lot of coverage. They had no choice but to utilize him underneath and blitz less. It even hindered him in the run game.
They are getting healthy and it is starting to show.
Against the Colts I fully expect White or David to be on Taylor all day. It should be a fairly simple game plan… Take him out of the equation and the Colts don’t stand a chance

Exactly stopp Taylor is a must ..take him out the game ..game over…that is thier strength…and so pressure wentz a day long make him throw ints!! Lfgo!!!!

LMFAO !!! Just a week ago , MOST of you were throwing in the towel and jumping ship !! I remember hearing how “DANNY DIME’S WAS GOING TO RUN ALL OVER THE BUCS” and THE GIANTS WRs WERE GOING TO TORCH THE BUCS” .. Either stick with the team , THICK OR THIN , or go root for the Cowgirls !! Only real BUCS fans here . GO BUCS

  15. TampabayDJ82 Says:

And as I do believe the Bucs will WIN against the Colts , some of you are talking like this game will be against the Lions !! First of all , the Colts have a top 10 OLINE , Wentz doesn’t throw Int’s to often , and they have a good defense ! My point being , EVERYONE was so sure the LITTLE GIANTS were going to give our BUCS problems , but now you think all the Bucs have to do is shut down Taylor and the game is over ?? What a difference a week makes …. 😂
    GO BUCS !!
