Burning “unnecessary” timeouts.
Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians has harped on presnap penalties. And these types of penalties usually occur when someone has his head up his tailpipe.
You know, jumping before the snap, or lining up wrong on offense.
Well yesterday, Joe came across interesting intel Twittered out by the NFL. It showed a breakdown of each coach and how he uses timeouts. It seems once a game Arians burns a timeout in that is labeled “unnecessary.” Here is how the NFL defines an unnecessary offensive timeout:
Unnecessary, Offense: Called when an offense is trying to avoid a delay of game or an uncertain play call.
As you can see in the graphic below, the Bucs are pretty much in the middle of the pack when it comes to unnecessary offensive timeouts.
So far, the Bucs have been fortunate that they don’t often need timeouts at the end of the first or second half. But to Joe, this demonstrates what Arians is saying about presnap penalties: they’re costly and the Bucs need to cut down on them.

It’s a little misleading by Bliss to frame this as just the coaches using timeouts this way. It’s a shared responsibility with the qb, who are often the ones calling these timeouts shown in the dark red. I’d also argue half of the definition of unnecessary; if you called the wrong play and are about to get lit up, then a timeout sounds pretty dang necessary to me!
It’s also interesting that there doesn’t appear to be a causality link between this graph and win/loss record, with good and bad teams scattered throughout.

The leading cause of Buc timeouts? Brady and Leftwich seeing different intents or vulnerabilities out of the defensive formation and personnel on the field. That causes a disconnect over the playcalls they have in mind.

DAA, that’s because Brady is the QB. In Saints game Brady had to call a TO because Dawson didn’t know where to line up. Anybody see Haubaugh interview after loss to Miami last night. He said loss was totally on him, Ravens were not prepared. Unlike Bruce after loss to Saints, he threw everyone else under the bus. He never takes the blame. With ALL these new injuries that Saints loss wound is getting a little deeper.

Joe, wouldn’t this include all of those timeouts that coaches use to encourage an Official Review of the play? I know Bruce definitely did this in 2020.

Absolutely true!
Since day one being Bucs TV🤡, this joker/delirious/finish HC, but rising media’s brown nose, always blame others and 90% of the times, the players.
Never seen and/or hear something like him.

Alansbucsfan, Arians doesn’t throw for 4 tds and 375 yards but sure does smile alot when they beat up on the Bears 38-3. Then it’s all preparation.
