Beat-Up Secondary Finally Catches Up With Bucs

Shell game at CB figured out.
There are only so many mirrors you can use in the NFL. And the final mirror Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles used today broke on him.
And when you break a mirror, misfortune is supposed to befall you. A haunted woods like the French Quarter may be the worst place for that to happen.
The Bucs at times this year were down their top five cornerbacks. It was a masterful shell game Bowles used to try to hide or cover for all of those backups the Bucs used and found a way to continue winning.
Bowles’ luck ran out today.
The Bottle of Cologne stunk. And it didn’t get much better.
Ross Cockrell? Got clowned for an early touchdown. He’s a backup for a reason.
And when a stiff of a quarterback like Trevor Siemian is able to pick you apart, and dominate you with time-killing scoring drives, it’s Doomsday.
Joe is pretty certain that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht hoped upon hope he could somehow get to the bye week before needing to make a move for a corner, or perhaps avoid making a move for a corner and have Carlton Davis, Sean Murphy-Bunting and/or Dee Delaney healthy by the time the Bucs play their next game, Nov. 14 in Washington.
Licht’s plan nearly worked. It may have been just one game too many before the hope ran out.
Trade deadline is 4 p.m. Tuesday. Time to make good use of it for a corner.

If SMB was there the same would have happened. He gets roasted and burnt. So he had a couple good games in the playoffs. Before he got hurt he looked like a backup too.

The immortal Trevor Siemian comes in for Jameis and has 3 straight drives for scores, that just is not good.

We don’t have the cap space for a corner that would be a big upgrade. A shutdown corner costs $10 million. Who do you want to cut to make the cap space? And how many draft picks do you want to give up?
It won’t make much difference anyway if the tram commits 11 penalties.

There’s no one to trade for since we can’t really afford anyone. Your best best would be to trade OJ, but did you see Brate attempt to block today? Still, you might be best to play an extra offensive lineman and use the OJ money on a corner.
But it really depends on when Davis and SMB are back.
Also if you’re going to get scrubs to play corner, at least make sure they’re fast. These WR’s for the Saints are terrible, but were able to make the plays they did because our corners are not just scrubs, but slow scrubs. Yes, Dean is fast, he’s not the guy I’m talking about, I’m talking about every single other corner that is active.

I think this is my fault. I went to the game as I have in 2018 and 2019 seasons before the sickness hit. Well after today I am 0-3 and promise I will not do this a 4th time. Awful performance today from a team who was clearly looking ahead to a bye week.

The story of this game is defensive penalties and missed tackles. There was way too many of the saints plays that should’ve been 1-2 yard but ended being bigger gains because of missed tackles. Not even going to talk about all the stupid penalties….Oh and Tom with a few terrible throws.

When I saw JW go down I just knew Payton probably trusted Siemian more with passing and he tossed it around…

If you traded OJ, or cut him if you couldn’t trade him, that would free up whatever his prorated salary of $6m is. But now you don’t have any depth at TE and Gronk is hurt. So it’s very risky. But the Bucs might have to do that because corner play is so exceptionally bad.
But if you’re trading for someone in that range, it’s just going to be a backup vet on another team, or a player on his 1st year deal, where you’ll give up more draft capital (which I’m fine with if you get someone decent).

It doesnt matter who you have at corner if your DL keeps getting flagged for roughing, your star LB is taunting on a critical drive, and the offense turns it over 3 times.

For back ups to backups I thought they played pretty well. Yes they gave up some yards but often bent without breaking. The story today was a totally one sided officiated game. The refs let the Saints get away with everything. Their corners held constantly and holding Godwin gave them the first pick. It was so blatant at times I think the refs were betting on the game. The refs did everything possible to give the Saints this game. It was one of the worst I’ve seen in years and the entire officiating crew should be banned for life. This was the big story today. It demoralized our team and our coaches. It’s frustrating and a few really bad 3’rd down calls gave the Saints the final push to win the game. It’s hard enough to beat a good team but beating the officials too makes it impossible at times. They have too much control over games and zero accountability. This game was stolen by the refs and no one can convince me otherwise so please don’t bother. I just hope these cheating bozo jerks don’t call any more Bucs’ games ever. They sucked.

All I’m reading, in every article right now, is EXCUSES EXCUSES EXCUSES. Reality? We beat OURSELVES. Zero TOs Saints against 3 TOs Bucs. Check. Two penalties for 10 yards Saints against 11 penalties for 99 yards Bucs. Check. TOP 33 mins Saints against 27 mins Bucs. Check. 72 plays Saints against 58 plays Bucs. Check. 26 first downs Saints against 16 first downs Bucs. Check. Decent tackling Saints vs crappy tackling Bucs. Check. And the list goes on. We beat OURSELVES. But still, we’re 6-2 with a BYE week to heal up. This’ll be a good wake-up call. We got this.

BTW, since 2005, NFL teams with a minus-3 turnover differential (like we had against the Cowboys AND the Saints today) lose 91.4% of the time. We beat the odds & the Cowboys. Today, the odds caught up with us. Sometimes you eat the bear; sometimes the bear eats you.

it is times like this that Licht’s 2nd round draft pick of another backup quarterback that we did not need seems hugely stupid. Kyle Trask is never going to be our starting quarterback. We needed more secondary help–WTF!?

I’ll tell you exactly that. You know who’s the only Bucs’ CB to play in every game this season? Ross Cockrell. You know which Bucs CB has as many PDs as Carlton Davis with 5? Yup, Cockrell again (second most on the Bucs behind Dean). Targeted 34 times in first 7 games, allowing 22 completions for 64.7% … that’s not that shabby for a backup CB, considering that the Bucs overall are allowing right near 70% completion rate.

The DBs weren’t good, but we knew that. The coaching wasn’t great, but we knew that.
No matter how good your DBs are, they cannot cover someone faster than them. You have to give them a cushion, and that works only for those long shots, that a safety should be helping with.
Call out the bad tackles, the line and linebacker penalties; I swear there was one touchdown drive where we gave them half of their first downs.
Our D-line didn’t work hard enough at giving pressure and that would have been necessary for out DBs to survive, that didn’t happen.

It’s the scheme, and your stupid defensive coordinator, not a lack of DB talent. A good coach would find a way to mitigate a weak secondary. Christ, with all the talent they have everywhere else, it shouldn’t be that hard. Other than scowling when a flag gets thrown, I can’t think of one thing he brings to the table.
Also your team doesn’t play well with noise. It’s probably a foreign thing. Before tommy boy, y’alls loudest stadium was probably…. Whenever the last relavent game y’all’s had 20 years ago

You either love your team. Or you don’t. They’ve played hard, been competitive in every game and lost 2 road games to good teams.
It’s never enough for some. They want to vilify the players and the coaches. They forget how bad things were. If you can’t enjoy this, just go cheer for the Packers or Saints.

Beat-up has ZERO to do with it. This Secondary sucked last year and they suck all of this year, even before injuries.

Like I had posted the one with less penalties and turnovers wins the game. Brady was off balance all day long. The defense looked tired and worn. Bye week should have come a week earlier. The Bucs will recoup and Brady and team will come back with a strong 2nd half. Never give up on my Buccaneers!!

The trade deadline is tomorrow at 4PM EST. I sure hope Licht finds a partner willing to trade a CB to the Bucs. If not, I sure hope they sign Brian Poole. Granted, Poole might be an injury problem, but he’s certainly better at CB than the special teamers and street free agents that the Bucs are being forced to use.
