CBS: Bucs Should Trade For Joe Haden

October 29th, 2021

Not enough cash?

Could the Bucs somehow squeeze this guy under the salary cap?

Patrik Walker of CBS Sports typed a column this week about who contenders should target as the Tuesday NFL trade deadline approaches.

And it appears Walker is not fully sold on the Bucs signing of veteran corner Richard Sherman. So Walker thinks Steelers cornerback Joe Haden, in the final year of his contract, might be trade bait since Pittsburgh appears out of the running for a playoff berth in the AFC North.

…. Haden still has a lot of tread left on his tires, and he would instantly be what Sherman couldn’t. This isn’t to write off Sherman, but once he returns, there’s clearly no guarantee he can stay healthy, so grabbing Haden just makes sense.

There is, unfortunately, one major stumbling block that Walker is ignoring in his quest for the Bucs to acquire Haden.

That would be Haden’s contract.

After Sunday’s game, Haden will still be due some $4.1 million for the balance of this season. That figure is what should be left of his $7 million contract which expires after the 2021 season.

It seems, per various publications, the Bucs only have about $3 million of cap space remaining this season.

So right now the numbers just don’t work. That is, unless, yet another Bucs veteran wants to rework his contract. Then the Bucs may be able to pull this off.

One reason the Bucs have some $3 million of cap space is to have a piggy bank available to cover for future injuries. So Joe is guessing — provided the Bucs really want Haden — the Bucs would still want to squirrel away enough cash to buy other players off the street in case of injuries, which would be in addition to adding Haden’s salary.

So Joe isn’t entirely convinced this is doable. Possible? Maybe.

Joe figured a couple of weeks ago, the Bucs had hoped upon hope that they could somehow get to the bye week surviving their recent cornerback injuries woes, and cross their fingers that a corner or two (Richard Sherman, Carlton Davis or Sean Murphy-Bunting) could return by the next game by Nov. 14 at Washington. Therefore, the Bucs wouldn’t need another corner.

With Dee Delaney getting hurt last week and Jamel Dean and Sherman not yet 100 percent (yes, both are practicing but both are hampered), those goals are very much up in the air, pending Sunday’s game against the slimy Saints.

Haden wouldn’t be a bad pickup if you ignored his salary. But Joe lives in reality and knows Haden’s salary is something that cannot be ignored.

    Do it now!

  2. Jersey buc Says:

If possible love it. Haden can play! Then after the bye hopefully SMB will be back rusty as hell but back

  3. Rotten Amiigo Says:

My dad is a die hard Steelers fan. And he was actually taking to me about this a few days ago. Apparently he will not be back with Pittsburgh in 2022. I see a mutual benefit.

  4. zzbuc Says:

    They won’t…..

  5. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Trade Trask for Haden

  6. PassingThru Says:

If the Bucs want Joe Haden, Licht will have to send OJ Howard out to the Steelers just to comply with the salary cap constraints.

  7. DoooshLaRue Says:

How exactly is Pittsburgh out of playoff contention with a 3-3 record and only 2 games behind Cincy with 10 games left to play?
That, and the fact the Steelers have NEVER had a losing season with Tomlin as HC make this “potential” trade simply stupid.

  8. PassingThru Says:

If you want someone cheap, sign Brian Poole off the Patriot practice squad. While he’s an injury risk, he’ll fit within the cap. He’s also a capable CB who has versatility at both the slot and the outside.

  9. Listnfrmafar Says:

    How about Vaughn? Possibly Johnson.

  10. Buc50 Says:

They won’t catch Cincy unless Burrow gets hurt. Madden 2021 Buc’s Edition is just as crazy as the 2020 Edition

  11. Joe Says:

    How about Vaughn?

Steelers don’t need him but the very first thing Joe thought when Arians put Vaughn in the Chicago game was: “They’re showcasing him.”

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I agree that the Steelers aren’t done…..at least they don’t think they are….

  13. PassingThru Says:

Those two wouldn’t work under the cap, Listnfrmafar. The Bucs would probably be short about a million or so, but most GMs like to keep some cushion room for emergencies.

  14. Medicated Pete Says:

If Jameis lights up our CB’s, Bucs will make a trade. If we get by this game, no trade for CB’s

  15. SlyPirate Says:

    What’s the cost?

5th or 6th round pick. You bet.
    4rd … hmm?
    3rd … nope.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

TBBF is sick and tired of Networks suggesting who we should pick up…..they need to mind their own business….perhaps we should suggest some personnel moves for them.
    Our CBs will return….meanwhile we’ve got whipping boy….Richard Sherman….”Savior”…..

  17. cover deuce Says:

This would have been the preferable move vs signing Sherman – who I don’t hate, but their guys are pretty much their guys at this point. It’s difficult to see how the numbers back there even work when SMB and CD3 get back on the field. Sherm is an outside cover guy, that’s it. He’s not gonna play on 4th down like Delaney or Desir. He can’t play ST’s and S and nickel like Cockrell. Hard to see how you fit Haden into the picture even before we factor salary and the cost to acquire him in.

    “Trade Trask for Haden”
    ——————-
Trask is going to be our future QB, you like it or not. TB12 looks like is wrapping up his carrier sooner that all of us wanted to.
Offer OJ, and some money and bring the dude here, if possible.

    _________

    Funny.
My first thought was they were seeing what they had so they could make a decision on Rojo.
    $$$

    Crazybucs_CL-
He may be the future but this Bucs team as currently constructed will be long gone.

  21. Swampbuc Says:

I wonder what brilliant offering Pudrick Walker would suggest the Bucs make? This may be the dumbest farging idea I’ve heard from the boob tube brigade yet.

“…….He may be the future but this Bucs team as currently constructed will be long gone…..”
    ————————–
…so true about this team, but imaging having an other QB like JW, or those other jockers that run all over the field…. no Trask is going to be our man in incoming dark ages…
plus he is soooo low profile he no value at this time. OJ or RoJo may fool them…who knows 🤞

  23. Jmarkbuc Says:

ICBW, but doesn’t he have a history of injuries? I know he’s 32.. so no spring chicken.

    We got enough old dudes.

  24. SB~LV Says:

    He is a good’n
Don’t know of his injury history , but his is what Licht thought Hargreaves was going to be

  25. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Tbbf,

Right? I read some pundit on NFL.com saying the Bucs would be interested in trading with Houston for Uncle Vern.. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  26. Joe in Michigan Says:

Dooosh: When you say “simply stupid”, now you know how we feel when you go on and on about how no NFL team could ever win a game with The Durable One at Left Tackle, when The Durable One’s team WON THE SUPER BOWL last year.

  27. WalkdaPlank Says:

Joe Haden is still in the NFL? I remember he was being touted as one of the best CB’s in the NFL…..10 years ago.

  28. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Oh Joe in Michigan…….

Please show me where I EVER made that statement.
    You can’t because I didn’t.

I have said it’s likely he’ll get TB injured.
    That he’s overrated and overpaid.
That he lacks focus and is lazy.
I might have even said he was a trick baby…..

But I never said what you allege me of saying.

    I thought you were smart?
    Now you just seem petty…..

  29. Dew Says:

OJ for Haden. Both in the last year of their contract. Not sure if Steelers need a TE.

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Don’t pick on Doosh…..TBBF likes Doosh….

  31. Coburn Says:

Aren’t we likely to have SMB after the bye? Davis can’t be that far behind right? By the time anyone learns the defense we might be back to full strength

  32. sasquatch Says:

I think we’ll be okay once Davis and SMB return. The bye week is conveniently timed. Sherman could be helpful once he’s healthy again and has his feet under him.

  33. Craig Says:

Offer up O.J. Eric Ebron, the Steelers tight end, is out with a hamstring, and Big Ben needs a TE.

  34. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes Dooosh, I exaggerated and misquoted you. I apologize.

  35. unbelievable Says:

I said this 3 weeks ago… but would need to figure out the cap issue.

  36. Ash Says:

Lol why trade for any cb when the bucs starting cbs are going to be back after the bye silly

  37. BA4President Says:

Joe Haden could take a gamble by simultaneously being traded and resigning the rest of his 2021 contract for $2 million less.

This would have him going into free agency, where the big money is (more or less at his age), on a Super Bowl contending team rather than a 33 year old CB from a crummy team.

  38. Man Child Says:

Felt like we saw the defense swarming against the Bears. Would like to see us getting these young players more reps and not upset the flow.

  39. Defense Rules Says:

Agree Ash. We’ve actually got tons of CBs under contract. Just need a few of them to get healthy. The BYE is coming at a great time IMO.

  40. geno711 Says:

Does Joe Haden play our cover 3 type of system in his career.

It also appears that his best days are behind him. Not sure why anyone thinks he is a fit.

  41. JimmyJack Says:

Every team in the AFC has 2 losses and the Steelers have 3. I dont see any chance that team is just gonna pack it in for the season.

Sounds like something that sounds cool on paper that really has zero chance of happening……I read the article and they also are saying for some team to trade for Beckham of the Browns? I thought the Brown were supposted to be some big contender. Sounds bizarre

  42. JimmyJack Says:

Somebody above said trade O.J. straight up for this guy? Im just so done with this crap man. Id say I should stop reading nonsense like this but now I cant stop laughing.

  43. Buczilla Says:

If we are giving up only a 5th or 6th round pick, I’m cool with it.

  44. Joe in Michigan Says:

My friends who are Steelers fans say their O-Line is terrible. I wouldn’t want the Bucs to trade any of their O-Line depth, and look forward to Carlton Davis and maybe SMB returning sometime this year.

  45. Bucschamp Says:

not yet. Wait till playoffs see if we still need some bodies.

  46. Swampbuc Says:

Idiots suggesting trading OJ for Joe FARGIN Haden? LOL!!!!!!!

Glad Licht and BA and TB are in charge. They would spit our their drinks if you suggested that moronity to them.

Just when I think it can’t get any dumber, it does.

  47. Buc and roll Says:

    Run it by Tommy

and if he gives the okay

    do it quick and painless

  48. PassingThru Says:

Some of you may be challenged if you’re referring to my earlier post regarding OJ for Haden, but that’s not a big deal. Literacy isn’t particularly high among select posters.

My contention is that if the Bucs want Haden, Licht will be forced to either restructure on the fly or send out OJ as trade cap ballast. In other words, for those incapable of doing math, Haden makes too much money so something would have to give. The Bucs have $3 million and change left under the cap, Haden is owed $4 million and change, and OJ is owed around $3 million. Most GMs leave a cushion under of cap space for emergencies after the trade deadline (and it adds to profitability if it’s never used; GMs are evaluated on that too sports fans). GMs like that cushion as it gives them the ability to add a vet player who is released after the trade deadline. In the event that Tampa Bay loses a vet to injury, Licht would be able to grab the aforementioned released vet. That’s why teams try to keep at least $2 million to $3 million+ after the trade deadline.

  49. Swampbuc Says:

Let’s be clear — trading OJ for Haden would be STUPID.

  50. adam from ny Says:

if we bring back har-grievances, jpp and tom brady will tag team and beat the sh!t out of the lazy moe

    🙂

  51. adam from ny Says:

at this point most buc fans are willing to trade oj for a 12 pack of lever soap at target

  52. adam from ny Says:

i would do it if they have the aloe scent (green packaging) in stock

    >>> 🙂 <<<

  53. Listnfrmafar Says:

First off you can’t trade OJ for anyone, then all you have is Brate and a rookie TE. Steelers don’t need Rojo they have Harris who is kicking arse. Bucs could use Haden even when secondary is healthy. Tyler Johnson is the obvious choice.

  54. David Says:

Absolutely not. They don’t need to make a trade.

Dean and Delaney are getting healthy and have been playing great. The safeties are all healthy now. SMB and Sherman and Davis will all start filtering back in the mix over the coming month. They’re going to be better for this and they’ve been playing better and better defense consistently throughout the year

  55. Listnfrmafar Says:

Playing GREAT? You mean against the rookie Justin Fields with the invisible oline? Yes Dean played better but once again he looked foolish in the end zone when a td went through Chicago’s TE hands. He was spun around like a ballerina. Am I missing something here? Since when has Bucs secondary been good other than SB last year? The secondary needs help.

  56. Eddie Marz Says:

Don’t tell Mike Tomlin the Steelers are done. Anyway we can win without that guy. Bucs just need to stay healthy and get their full squad back. GO BUCS!

  57. Listnfrmafar Says:

Tomlin is leaving to coach college ball. Ask Carson Palmer.

  58. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

They’re 6-1 … Just let them get healthy and they’ll be fine
