Chatter On The Football Field — And In The Tunnel

October 25th, 2021

“I made him my son.”

Joe hasn’t spoken with Bucs left guard Donovan Smith since before The Sickness hit, back when players weren’t kept away from media types by the NFL.

Smith never came across to Joe as a bitter dude or a guy who ran smack much if at all. Mostly a quiet guy who was much more concerned about his job than empty chitchat.

So Joe found this video clip equal parts hilarious and stunning.

It’s just moments after one of the best games the Bucs have played since Smith was drafted in 2015, and he’s mouthing off about the Bears while walking back to the locker room. LOL

Joe has no idea what triggered Smith — he was clearly speaking to someone away from the camera.

Smith said to someone unidentified, “Make sure y’all put 99 was my son, I made him my son today.”

Now Smith was looking in the general direction of where some reporters stand while waiting to get to the interview room immediately after a game. Joe has no idea if someone wrote an article or shot his mouth off on radio about Smith and Smith decided to tell that person what’s what. Joe is just guessing.

No. 99 for the Bears is linebacker Trevis Gipson. The guy hardly registered on the radar with one tackle. The snap percentages were not included in the official gamebook and the snap counts likely won’t be released until later tonight or tomorrow.

Could it have been that Gipson mouthed off to Smith on the field yesterday?

Joe isn’t sure, but it is cool to see Smith with that angry passion still simmering after a big win.

In a response to a retweet where someone applauded Smith for his emotion, Smith replied, “Had to bro. Son was talking spicy.”

The O-line was a work of art yesterday.

  2. BucfaninMi Says:

    Love it!!!

  3. AKicknTheBucNuts Says:

    LOL!

Are you sure he didn’t say: “I made him my b!tch today.”

  4. Joe in Michigan Says:

Understand, number 99 and Dooosh are Thee Durable One’s children.

  5. Swampbuc Says:

Yet there are “experts” that post on these here thread who assure us that Donovan Smith is a matador running a turnstile and should be shipped out with Monday’s’ garbage. They are idiots, of course. Donnie was a beast yesterday, as he has been since TB12 arrived.

  6. Rod Munch Says:

Maybe he saw what Tom Brady did, giving that cancel kid his hat, and Smith then literally made 99 his son, as in he adopted him.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

*cancer… not cancel. Ugh. Maybe Smith will make me his soon too, and spend me to a good college.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

Off topic, but has anyone heard when Scotty Miller is supposed to be coming back? I thought he’d be back already, and we don’t even hear his name mentioned anymore.

  9. Miller5252 Says:

This is just Sherman coaching up the guys. Sherman saw Smiths trash talking was pretty weak and wanted to see him do better.

  10. SB~LV Says:

    Speaking of “The Sickness “
The broadcasters mentioned the high number of Bears out with Covid, I hope the healthy players were not passing it on to the Bucs.
Running game is improving but faltered late in the game.

  11. DoooshLaRue Says:

Even Durable Donnie’s trash talking is lackadaisical.

  12. DoooshLaRue Says:

I asked Scotty when he was coming back……but he didn’t know.

  13. Listnfrmafar Says:

Oline best in the NFL including Smith. Anyone see the TE they called up had Jensens back when Bears had him down on the ground throwing cheap shots? All I can say is WOW! Depleted Db’s and Bucs best WR and TE out. Tjat was impressive. Fields, welcome to the NFL.

  14. Orange is the new Pewter Says:

99 talking poop I’m sure. Anybody here see what Jensen did to get the dumb asss to throw a punch and get dq’d?

  15. geno711 Says:

Alex Cappa was the only starter not to give up a pressure. Tristan Wirfs, Ryan Jensen, Ali Marpet and Donovan Smith each gave up one pressure, but the line did not give up a sack.

Left tackle is typically the hardest of the positions to play along the offensive line although that can change from game to game. D Smith has been a stud this year.

    Even in his trash talking.

  16. SufferingSince76 Says:

Jensen is a master. Hopefully, Smith is learning from him.

  17. Brandon Says:

    left guard?

  18. donuts Says:

I think Big 76 was talking about #98 Bilal…who got tossed at end of game. There was some pushing and shoving on that play between them.

  19. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Geno,

Rewatch the Patriots game, your Stud LT looked pathetic.

  20. Lou. Says:

    @Joe —

Has Warren Sapp been a Donovan Smith critic?

  21. LakelandSteve Says:

Munch, Scotty Miller has turf toe I believe and sometimes those injuries take weeks to heal and tend to linger if you come back too soon.

  22. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Y’all still can’t talk to them? But wait a minute.. isn’t everyone vaccinated? Doesn’t that mean they are bullet proof and anyone who isn’t is just a walking, talking, disease person who should die for their sin of not complying?! … I mean, they changed the definition of what vaccinated means so that they could continue to lie!! That doesn’t grant you access? I would say I feel sorry for the poor fools who fell for it and allowed them too inject you with poison but the way y’all that have gotten it have acted… I don’t feel sorry!!

  23. Robert Says:

Let’s save the talking for this Sunday. Cam Jordan has whooped D Smith too many times in this heated series. He better be ready to go.
