Dee Delaney > Richard Sherman
October 24th, 2021UPDATED 6:58 p.m. – Before the season, Bucs cornerback Dee Delaney had four defensive snaps in the NFL since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2018.
Now he can say he’s better than Richard Sherman.
Bucco Bruce Arians spoke last week on his radio show about how Delaney made the team as a special teams player but slowly proved his worth on defense.
Delaney stepped in for 53 snaps when Jamel Dean messed up his knee against the Rams and was ok. Then he was thrown into the fire when Richard Sherman pulled his hamstring in the first quarter against the Eagles. That 46-snap performance, per Arians, let everyone know that Delaney is a reliable player.
Today Delaney got the start at cornerback and came up with a key first-quarter interception, one snap after he registered a strong defense on a short pass. He was giving a cushion but was aggressive off the whistle rather than retreating.
What a feather in the cap for general manager Jason Licht, finding dudes off the street who can contribute. And ironically, Delaney was coached last week by Richard Sherman.
Joe’s all fired up for the journey of 26-year-old Delaney, from The Citadel to the best team in the NFL.
Update – Delaney left the game in the second half with an ankle injury.

What is the logic behind this article, Delaney caught a prayer as a receiver fell down?! Come on. It’s called watching the guy play. –Joe This is box score analysis at its worst.

As I typed, Delaney got burned for 23 yards on soft coverage. Bucs are playing a soft prevent at this stage. Don’t be ridiculous. –Joe

And isn’t it Amazing to see what the defensive backs are doing with coach Sherman in their ear.

Yea hes totally better than a future HOF. Thats like saying gabbert is better than Tom when he looks good in a blowout.
October 24th, 2021 at 6:49 pm
The guy can be serviceable without being anointed as “better than” a future HOFer. My eye balls are seeing decent and reading hyperbole!
October 24th, 2021 at 6:51 pm
That “bottle of cologne” must be better than a HOFer now too by this logic? Come on Joe, I love what you do but sometimes you go overboard.

Yes Deleany played good football today on more then just that one pick, like Joe mentioned.
And his spash play gives credit to the fact of how the passrush can make a secondary look good. That pick was setup all day on the QB pressure and kudos to Dellany to finish it.

Geez. All you need is 1 good game around these parts to be better than a HOF player? Come on its getting ridiculous. Just Sherman’s mentality is better than an entire Delaney. Justin Fields is not even a pro Qb right now

He’s not better than Sherman but he probably is better than “Jamel ‘Burnt Sausages’ Dean”

What’s with the Richard Sherman hate?……..

The D gave up 3 pts and still there are people complaining and criticizing. Just enjoy the moment, Bucs fans. Forget about the details and learn to celebrate. At least for today, Delaney is a Pro Bowler!

Delaney looks good. He has a nose for the ball. Even in some earlier games.

Ignorant article.
October 24th, 2021 at 7:55 pm
I’m going to guess that Delaney now has more interceptions than Sherman does this year, and Joe just forgot to include that main point in his article. Context Joe, context. LoL.

Well said, Rio.

And now Delaney hurt his ankle.
Seems on this team a corner gets hurt the second they get hot.

I think it’s a bit disrespectful to Sherman who had to come in out of football shape, with basically no practice and start in 3 games in 12 days. Its not a coincidence that all the guys we brought in Tom, Gronk, AB, and Lenny all got better after their first year. Even Dee Delaney needed time to get his feet wet and he had an entire off-season. Let’s not be so hasty to eliminate a future hofer who hasn’t even gotten an opportunity to get in the proper shape and learn the guys around him. Sherman has never been an athletic freak; wins with his mind. His body hasn’t gotten the chance to catch up with his mind yet bc on all of those plays, I’ve only seen 3-4 mental errors in all those snaps.

I’d also like to note that every defense Sherman has played for has gone to the Super Bowl at least once as one of the better defenses in the league. Best* I would like to think that Sherman’s presence on the defense and in the lockeroom has something to do with why our defense in the last for games has only surrendered more than 20 pts once. After giving up at least 24 in all three of our first games.

People don’t recognize his name so he can’t be good. Delaney will be a nobody just like Tony Romo, Kurt Warner, Brandon Browner, Everson Walls, Joey Porter, and others that weren’t drafted and became nothing. You have to be drafted in round 1, like Vernon Hargreaves, to be good in the NFL. Everyone with a brain knows that.
