Bruce Arians: Don’t Blame The Rain

The Bucs dropped important passes on Sunday night.
Key throws went through the hands of Cameron Brate, Mike Evans and Antonio Brown.
Speaking on his Buccaneers Radio Network show this evening, Bucco Bruce Arians said the rainy weather is no excuse.
“It can but it shouldn’t,” Arians said of wet balls being an issue in the passing game.
Arians said modern gloves for receivers are exceptionally tacky and better than ever.
“It’s just concentration,” Arians insisted, noting his shock to see Brate have a drop in the second half.
So is a wet ball a fair excuse?
Of course it is, but Arians also is correct. Quarterbacks and receivers succeed in the rain all the time. And a Tampa team must be well skilled and experienced in a wet ball given the climate.
Also, Joe will note that the Patriots squeezed a tremendous percentage of passes Sunday.

Not buying it Bruce. The weather was a huge factor because of the chuck and duck play calling. If you had called short high percentage passes, that last kick from Folk doesn’t happen.

Agreed. They took some shots downfield at critical moments when pounding out a first down was the way to go. Many would argue great play calling if AB hauls that one it, but low percentage in that situation.

However the team wasn’t prepared for the standard Patriot trick play, which is the QB making a backward pass to a WR, who then makes a long forward pass. The Patriots have been doing this for years in key games, and yet it caught the Bucs with their pants down.

Brady last passes were designed to give the highest reward with the least risk. The long throws to Brown only he could catch them who knows if he threw short and they may have bounce off the receivers hands and they could have been an interception and we lose the game. In Brady I trust.

As for the Buc offense & Brady……one factor that hasn’t been considered is the loss of Gronk….not just as a player/TE…..but the importance he brings to Brady…..Brady just possibly plays better when he’s around.
I don’t know if there are rules prohibiting it (don’t think there are) but I think players like JPP & Gronk should be on the sidelines cheering the team.

Bruce warrants a ‘Partly True’ on this one. He’s right about the modern tacky gloves & about concentration. But it looked like the rain was driving pretty hard at times during the game, and playing at night under the lights in a downpour in someone else’s house kinda sounds like ‘the perfect storm’ when you’re on the receiving end of some very deep passes.
And Mac Jones might’ve had a high completion percentage, but those were almost all short & intermediate throws. He only threw 2 deep; 1 was incomplete & the other was intercepted. Brady threw 14 deep, and completed only 3 (and was 0-for-5 deep in the 2nd half). That’s only 21% completion deep, and Brady had been better than 50% in the 1st 3 games, none of which had rain. Sorry Bruce, but the game conditions didn’t warrant so many deep throws. No biscuit that night.

He still played ok but the other players on the other team gets paid as well. Give credit to the Patriots some of worship Brady so much yall think if he has a bad game then it’s someone else fault or it’s the weather. The Patriots played good that’s it end of story we still won . I don’t want to hear about he missing this player or that player we have a lot of depth at the receiver and tightend position no excuses …

Weather wasn’t a factor for the Pats, Jones had 19! completions in a row. Drops have been a problem for this team, rain, or shine.

DBS it didn’t matter for the oats because they were throwing shorter. That’s generally what teams do in bad weather. It really affects king throws more than anything because of the extra velocity. Even the announcers were talking about Brady putting a bit more touch in the Brate pass because of the weather

The one drop that was forgivable was that toss to AB in the end zone that left us needing an FG.
First the Pat’s DB did a decent job of cutting down the window…it required a super throw which Brady made…sorry O’Neill we get that you’re still butt hurt that we cut the loser…but that was a spectacular throw…it would have required a spectacular catch which AB generally makes but nobody is perfect.
There was a TON of talk before…during…and after the game if Brady felt the pressure because of the special “situation”. Early on it appeared he did but he settled down and made some VERY good throws.
What people neglect when discussing that pressure..how hard do we believe ME13 Brate and AB were pressing? How much did those guys want to play lights out to help their QB? They appeared kinda tight to me at times.

A lot of factors were going on in that game. Front was not there and I’m sure Brady would have wanted to put some big plays on him to rub it in patriots face. Also the rain and it was cold also so I’m sure some of the receivers were feeling it and the hands were getting a little numb. Heavy rain in your face can sometimes make it hard to focus on the ball. Give it a couple more games and everyone being healthy again and we will see the team we saw after the bye week. Bruce likes doing those big down field plays but the short first down plays are what Brady is best at and sometimes you gotta go with that just to mix it up a bit. Teams are expecting those huge long passes and mixing it up will keep the defenders of their game from our offense. Bruce needs to step back and come up with some tricky plays so no one can figure what kind of team we are. That’s how you win games.

The rain wasn’t a factor for the pats because Jones threw check downs all night short passes with not alot of velocity higher percentage throws alot easier to catch in the rain than what the bucs were doing not rocket science 1 pass over 20 yards which ended up in a pick and 2 throws over 10 yards Mac didn’t have the elite night like some people think

Just read an interesting article Joe about the Bucs’ defense. It made an argument that I’ve read from you before: essentially said the run is obsolete for certain teams (like the Bucs with their high-powered passing offense?).
Turns out the run is also obsolete for any team playing the Bucs. Why waste downs trying to run on the #1 run defense when you can throw against the #32 pass defense. Very logical on the surface, but it got me thinking; ‘Are we only #1 against the run (yards allowed being the criteria) because no one runs on us? Is it because they can’t, or because our pass coverages are just so bad?
Same article suggested 3 corners who the Bucs might try to swing a trade for:
1 – Byron Jones (Dolphins)
2 – Darius Slay (Eagles)
3 – James Bradberry (Giants)
All 3 teams are potentially looking at losing seasons and might want to stock up on draft picks for the future. They also might want to lower their payroll, since all 3 CBs wouldn’t come cheap.

We actually ended up playing a rather difficult first quarter of the season. More difficult than people imagined. Cowboys look legit. They are for sure the favorites to win the East right now. The Rams we knew was going to be a tough game. And the Patriots were not going to be a cakewalk. People forgot how good Belichick is and he knew all of Brady’s weaknesses. The Patriots also have a good secondary. That wasn’t a bad unit. The Pats game is probably a relief for Brady. It provides some closure, and now he can focus on the rest of the season. I’m glad that game was early in the season. Considering the injuries we have, we are very fortunate to get out of those games 3-1. And Bucs are not even playing on the top of their game yet.
The next 4 teams in comparison shouldn’t be as daunting. Sure we can lose if we get sloppy, careless, and stupid. Absolutely. And the Philly game is on a short week. Can’t overlook that. But these next 3 opponents especially aren’t monsters. Even with the injuries, the next 3 are games the Bucs should win. And will be expected to win.

The Pats didn’t seem to have any issues catching the ball, including what, 19-straight on their side? If weather was an issue, why was it only an issue for us? Brady did say the Bucs haven’t really played in any bad weather games since he’s been here, so it’s been a while. I wonder if they’re using that Glazer shed too much, maybe they need to stay out in the weather next time it’s an option.

Dude threw for 270 yards and no turnovers IN THE RAIN in sloppy conditions. Also led the team to a late game-winning drive.
Haha… it’s funny when the Winston-Homers are left with calling a no turnover, 31 yards short of 300 yards passing game (in the rain) as a “bad game.”

Bardy Bucs it was a poor night for Brady by his standards. Just look at his completion %. Well below his average. He was missing throws all night.
To his credit he is able to regather himself midway through games. He did it vs Atl. and he did it on Sunday when he threw 2 amazing TDs to seal victory…….of course AB gagged on both of them but they were amazing throws reguardless.
I really dont care that Brady was a little off. Its not ideal but I think we can give the dude a break based on the circumstance and based on the fact tha TV he probably bounces back and throws up 3-5 biscuits this week.
But lets be fair. Brady is not above critism.

Why do you throw long ball in a bad weather? Especially when Tom relies on inches accuracy!

BradyBucs — it was a ‘bad game’ by Brady standards. He said so himself, that he was tight and the experience was more emotional than he thought it would be. It’s quite the credit to him, that despite a bad game from him and his receivers and in particular the clueless play caller that the Bucs still won. Not sure why you think that is a bad thing, other than it’s just fake internet drama.

I just thought it was funny how posted in this thread to whine & cry about Brady because he had a “fair” game in the rain and under tough conditions playing @ Foxboro which all the emotions of it all.
He could have played better but certainly had some bad drops by his receivers. But either way, it’s never been about only him. BUT… he’s clearly miles better than Jameis ever will be. Jameis single-handedly lost games, that’s the difference.
And, no, before you say it, didn’t just say all past losses were all Jameis’ fault, they certainly weren’t. Our Defense sucked a lot of times (like they still now now sometimes) and we had kicking issues that cost us games. BUT… that doesn’t take away from Jameis losing us many games ON HIS OWN with his terrible throws and terrible decision-making.
