Bruce Arians: Don’t Blame The Rain

October 5th, 2021

The Bucs dropped important passes on Sunday night.

Key throws went through the hands of Cameron Brate, Mike Evans and Antonio Brown.

Speaking on his Buccaneers Radio Network show this evening, Bucco Bruce Arians said the rainy weather is no excuse.

“It can but it shouldn’t,” Arians said of wet balls being an issue in the passing game.

Arians said modern gloves for receivers are exceptionally tacky and better than ever.

“It’s just concentration,” Arians insisted, noting his shock to see Brate have a drop in the second half.

So is a wet ball a fair excuse?

Of course it is, but Arians also is correct. Quarterbacks and receivers succeed in the rain all the time. And a Tampa team must be well skilled and experienced in a wet ball given the climate.

Also, Joe will note that the Patriots squeezed a tremendous percentage of passes Sunday.

  1. Buc50 Says:

Not buying it Bruce. The weather was a huge factor because of the chuck and duck play calling. If you had called short high percentage passes, that last kick from Folk doesn’t happen.

  2. Medicated Pete Says:

Bruce lies more than the last President

  3. SlyPirate Says:

I get where BA’s coming from. No excuses. Accountability. Find a way.

  4. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Agree Buc50,

We needed to adjust to the conditions and chose not to.
Half biscuits would have been better than the big biscuits.

  5. SB~LV Says:

Nope! The team has yet to wake up, the first four games were sloppy sloppy sloppy! Gotta tune up RoJo , this weekend should be feed it to RoJo early and often. Kid needs to wake up!
Lots of areas in need of playing a crisp game, talent is there

  6. Superman Says:

Agreed. They took some shots downfield at critical moments when pounding out a first down was the way to go. Many would argue great play calling if AB hauls that one it, but low percentage in that situation.

  7. DBS Says:

Jones and his receivers were not having a big problem. A rookie with less talent no less.

  8. PassingThru Says:

It wasn’t a problem for the Patriots, so it shouldn’t have been a problem for the Bucs.

    No more excuses, Coach.

  9. PassingThru Says:

However the team wasn’t prepared for the standard Patriot trick play, which is the QB making a backward pass to a WR, who then makes a long forward pass. The Patriots have been doing this for years in key games, and yet it caught the Bucs with their pants down.

  10. Bucs since 76 Says:

Brady last passes were designed to give the highest reward with the least risk. The long throws to Brown only he could catch them who knows if he threw short and they may have bounce off the receivers hands and they could have been an interception and we lose the game. In Brady I trust.

  11. DBS Says:

Same as the Saints. They are never ready for that either yet they know it is coming.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m beginning to think that the Realist had an intervention on exclamation marks & came back on as Medicated Pete…..he’s starting to slip some shots in on BA….
    Anyone else seeing that?

As for the Buc offense & Brady……one factor that hasn’t been considered is the loss of Gronk….not just as a player/TE…..but the importance he brings to Brady…..Brady just possibly plays better when he’s around.

I don’t know if there are rules prohibiting it (don’t think there are) but I think players like JPP & Gronk should be on the sidelines cheering the team.

  13. unbelievable Says:

Drops and overthrows were the them of the night for our passing game.

And Bruce is right. It wasn’t an issue for the Pats.

  14. unbelievable Says:

    *the theme of the night

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Bruce warrants a ‘Partly True’ on this one. He’s right about the modern tacky gloves & about concentration. But it looked like the rain was driving pretty hard at times during the game, and playing at night under the lights in a downpour in someone else’s house kinda sounds like ‘the perfect storm’ when you’re on the receiving end of some very deep passes.

And Mac Jones might’ve had a high completion percentage, but those were almost all short & intermediate throws. He only threw 2 deep; 1 was incomplete & the other was intercepted. Brady threw 14 deep, and completed only 3 (and was 0-for-5 deep in the 2nd half). That’s only 21% completion deep, and Brady had been better than 50% in the 1st 3 games, none of which had rain. Sorry Bruce, but the game conditions didn’t warrant so many deep throws. No biscuit that night.

  16. Oneilbuc Says:

This team has a lot of weapons no excuses Patriots played good. Why do yall make excuses for Brady so much when he has a game like this?? He still played ok but the other players on the other team gets paid as well. Give credit to the Patriots some of worship Brady so much yall think if he has a bad game then it’s someone else fault or it’s the weather. The Patriots played good that’s it end of story we still won . I don’t want to hear about he missing this player or that player we have a lot of depth at the receiver and tightend position no excuses …

  17. mg Says:

The weather never mattered to Troy Brown, Jules, Welker or Gronk.
    Catch the ball.

  18. B.D Says:

Medicated Pete, you mean latest president……

  19. Tye Says:

That’s what ate at me when people kept using that as an excuse for Brady poor passes…. Jones was playing in the same weather, same conditions (as a rookie) and did not play fazed by any of it…

  20. Buckaroo Boozie Says:

    @Medicated idiot
Yep lies… I guess Mr. Alzhimer just forgets his lies… now he wants 80K IRS agents to steal everyone’s hard earned cash so were all living in campers in Walmart parking lots like you…
    IDIOT 🖕🏻

  21. Youngbucs Says:

Y’all a bunch of losers with a narrative where is BA making an excuse. He’s doing the exact opposite something is the matter with some of you.

..now our TV 🤡 is acting like a commentator NOT like HC. He is blaming AL the players now, no exceptions. On Radio,TV,social media… good god.

  23. carzyBucs_CL Says:

    ^^^^
and he never lied on his 50 years of services…never.

  24. Hodad Says:

Weather wasn’t a factor for the Pats, Jones had 19! completions in a row. Drops have been a problem for this team, rain, or shine.

  25. Lets Roll Says:

    Everyone is forgetting!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Brady has a bed time.

  26. Coburn Says:

DBS it didn’t matter for the oats because they were throwing shorter. That’s generally what teams do in bad weather. It really affects king throws more than anything because of the extra velocity. Even the announcers were talking about Brady putting a bit more touch in the Brate pass because of the weather

  27. Buckaroo Boozie Says:

@crazybucs not complaining just stating facts a wack job… got killed by IRS under Obummer and had to give up my season tix from 2009 – 2016 now that I have them back don’t want to lose again because some idiot wants an electric car and wants me too pay for it🤯

  28. mark2001 Says:

If I were coach, if there is no lightning, I’d simply have the guys practice in the rain. Maybe then, they will learn to catch those wet balls.

  29. Beeej Says:

    Patriots

A: ALways have a very good defense
    B: weren’t down 4 defensive starters

Some of you peeps are effing idjits

  30. 163doubleplay Says:

Let BA try to catch a wet ball with rain falling on your face…. it’s easier said than done or I should say, it’s easier to sit on your golf cart than to walk 10 steps.

  31. mark2001 Says:

Boozie…why were you “killed” by the IRS under Obama? Weren’t those sweet Bush tax cuts still in force? What a bunch of babies that can’t manage their money. Good thing you didn’t grow up earlier and pay pre-Reagan rates.

  32. carzyBucs_CL Says:

    @mark2001
    ——
i think Boozie is talking for this:
“Got more than $600 in the bank? The IRS wants the OK to snoop on you”
…as he and his pa$ty promised. they are going to tax the “rich”
you got $600 you are rich…. Boozie… there you go.

  33. stpetebucsfan Says:

The one drop that was forgivable was that toss to AB in the end zone that left us needing an FG.

First the Pat’s DB did a decent job of cutting down the window…it required a super throw which Brady made…sorry O’Neill we get that you’re still butt hurt that we cut the loser…but that was a spectacular throw…it would have required a spectacular catch which AB generally makes but nobody is perfect.

There was a TON of talk before…during…and after the game if Brady felt the pressure because of the special “situation”. Early on it appeared he did but he settled down and made some VERY good throws.

What people neglect when discussing that pressure..how hard do we believe ME13 Brate and AB were pressing? How much did those guys want to play lights out to help their QB? They appeared kinda tight to me at times.

  34. carzyBucs_CL Says:

    existing low now is:
“If you deposit more than $10,000 cash in your bank account, your bank has to report the deposit to the government.”

  35. Erik Says:

A lot of factors were going on in that game. Front was not there and I’m sure Brady would have wanted to put some big plays on him to rub it in patriots face. Also the rain and it was cold also so I’m sure some of the receivers were feeling it and the hands were getting a little numb. Heavy rain in your face can sometimes make it hard to focus on the ball. Give it a couple more games and everyone being healthy again and we will see the team we saw after the bye week. Bruce likes doing those big down field plays but the short first down plays are what Brady is best at and sometimes you gotta go with that just to mix it up a bit. Teams are expecting those huge long passes and mixing it up will keep the defenders of their game from our offense. Bruce needs to step back and come up with some tricky plays so no one can figure what kind of team we are. That’s how you win games.

  36. Erik Says:

Gronk was not there I meant to say

  37. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

3-1 and in first place and we really haven’t played well. No need to play our best ball in September and early October. I’ll take 3-1 each of the first three quarters and a 5-0 finish. For you Biden fans, that’s 17-0! For the rest of us, 14-3 and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. 😈

  38. Ash Says:

The rain wasn’t a factor for the pats because Jones threw check downs all night short passes with not alot of velocity higher percentage throws alot easier to catch in the rain than what the bucs were doing not rocket science 1 pass over 20 yards which ended up in a pick and 2 throws over 10 yards Mac didn’t have the elite night like some people think

  39. Buc50 Says:

For those saying Mac Jones didn’t have an issue with rain, you are right because he only threw one pass over 20 yards. He dinked and dunked his way all over the field. We were trying to deliver the dagger when all we needed were razer blades.

  40. Buckaroo Boozie Says:

Not gonna get into Symantec’s here but if you want to tax and spend start with taking the funds from all the millionaires in congress first… Guaranteed those scum wouldn’t be so liberal with tax payers money if they had to Annie up first… Tax Congress, then Hollyweird and then Afletes… 🙈🙉🙊

  41. Sandman Says:

With bruce, the problem jsnt never with the coaches. Just with the players. Lame

  42. mark2001 Says:

Boozie…I have no special love for those in Congress and the Senate…or Hollywood…or Athletes when it comes to earnings. Everyone should be facing the same tax rates based on earnings…not on some special “shielded” type of income.

  43. Buckaroo Boozie Says:

Oh…. and by the way if you strip away all the Endowment money from the top 50 Socialist Indoctrination University’s along with their network TV 💸 🤑 you pay off the National debt and every kid in America goes to College for free🥳
    Carry on … done venting🍻🍺

  44. Greg Says:

@Pete Your initial takes this season I have to give it to you were funny. You came out of the blue. Now that the season has gone on and you are on the site 24/7 Your true bias is showing. What was BA lying about? BA doesn’t give slack to anyone form TB to the receivers. As he said the sticky gloves the receivers have now are ridiculous with their tact. You are definitely looking like a former poster.

  45. Defense Rules Says:

Just read an interesting article Joe about the Bucs’ defense. It made an argument that I’ve read from you before: essentially said the run is obsolete for certain teams (like the Bucs with their high-powered passing offense?).

Turns out the run is also obsolete for any team playing the Bucs. Why waste downs trying to run on the #1 run defense when you can throw against the #32 pass defense. Very logical on the surface, but it got me thinking; ‘Are we only #1 against the run (yards allowed being the criteria) because no one runs on us? Is it because they can’t, or because our pass coverages are just so bad?

Same article suggested 3 corners who the Bucs might try to swing a trade for:

    1 – Byron Jones (Dolphins)
    2 – Darius Slay (Eagles)
    3 – James Bradberry (Giants)

All 3 teams are potentially looking at losing seasons and might want to stock up on draft picks for the future. They also might want to lower their payroll, since all 3 CBs wouldn’t come cheap.

  46. Buckaroo Boozie Says:

    Think pete runs moderation 🤔🤨🤣

  47. Jerry Says:

We actually ended up playing a rather difficult first quarter of the season. More difficult than people imagined. Cowboys look legit. They are for sure the favorites to win the East right now. The Rams we knew was going to be a tough game. And the Patriots were not going to be a cakewalk. People forgot how good Belichick is and he knew all of Brady’s weaknesses. The Patriots also have a good secondary. That wasn’t a bad unit. The Pats game is probably a relief for Brady. It provides some closure, and now he can focus on the rest of the season. I’m glad that game was early in the season. Considering the injuries we have, we are very fortunate to get out of those games 3-1. And Bucs are not even playing on the top of their game yet.

The next 4 teams in comparison shouldn’t be as daunting. Sure we can lose if we get sloppy, careless, and stupid. Absolutely. And the Philly game is on a short week. Can’t overlook that. But these next 3 opponents especially aren’t monsters. Even with the injuries, the next 3 are games the Bucs should win. And will be expected to win.

  48. Rod Munch Says:

The Pats didn’t seem to have any issues catching the ball, including what, 19-straight on their side? If weather was an issue, why was it only an issue for us? Brady did say the Bucs haven’t really played in any bad weather games since he’s been here, so it’s been a while. I wonder if they’re using that Glazer shed too much, maybe they need to stay out in the weather next time it’s an option.

  49. BradyBucs Says:

ROFL @ ONeil making this out to be a “bad game for Brady.”

Dude threw for 270 yards and no turnovers IN THE RAIN in sloppy conditions. Also led the team to a late game-winning drive.

Haha… it’s funny when the Winston-Homers are left with calling a no turnover, 31 yards short of 300 yards passing game (in the rain) as a “bad game.”

  50. Eckwood Says:

Medicated Pete ,,, what about the president before that that lied more than the last and the current guy that makes the last one seem like walking truth serum ………..Hell some guy today couldn’t figure out that GM and Chevrolet were the same company !! Hell who Knows he just maybe , just maybe he is ,,,Medicated Pete !!!

  51. JimmyJack Says:

We have two future Hall of Fame recievers and when Gronk is in its 3. They are expected to make them catches……period. Anything less is disapointment.

  52. JimmyJack Says:

Bardy Bucs it was a poor night for Brady by his standards. Just look at his completion %. Well below his average. He was missing throws all night.

To his credit he is able to regather himself midway through games. He did it vs Atl. and he did it on Sunday when he threw 2 amazing TDs to seal victory…….of course AB gagged on both of them but they were amazing throws reguardless.

I really dont care that Brady was a little off. Its not ideal but I think we can give the dude a break based on the circumstance and based on the fact tha TV he probably bounces back and throws up 3-5 biscuits this week.

But lets be fair. Brady is not above critism.

  53. Mike Says:

Only Defense Rules is logical. Others only look at the surface of numbers. This game shows that Bill is better at game planning than BA.
Why do you throw long ball in a bad weather? Especially when Tom relies on inches accuracy!

Moreover, BA does not train the team in the rain. It is a bad coaching.

  54. Rod Munch Says:

BradyBucs — it was a ‘bad game’ by Brady standards. He said so himself, that he was tight and the experience was more emotional than he thought it would be. It’s quite the credit to him, that despite a bad game from him and his receivers and in particular the clueless play caller that the Bucs still won. Not sure why you think that is a bad thing, other than it’s just fake internet drama.

  55. adam from ny Says:

do you think in week 5 or 6 we can finally play a complete game?

    it’s about time we do…

a thumping on miami is in order this tweekend…

and if not, a thursday night thrashing of the eagles is definitely in order…

i can see us taking the next 3 – we should really demo these teams…

    miami
    philly
    chicago

then i can see us beating new orleans before the break…but i do see us actually stumbling in this one going into the bye at 6-2

  56. Bucobill999 Says:

No way red faced obese joe

  57. Oneilbuc Says:

Bradybuc . Your a Brady homer and I never said Brady played bad . But I don’t want to hear excuses about the rain remember he’s your goat and you worship him and he doesn’t need anything thing for us win because remember to you he’s the only reason why the bucs wining according to you..

  58. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Oneil

How is “Fameis” record right now compared to Bradys’. Nuff said!!!

  59. BradyBucs Says:

    Oneilbuc,

Show me where I ever said he’s the only reason why we’re winning? I’ve NEVER said that.

I just thought it was funny how posted in this thread to whine & cry about Brady because he had a “fair” game in the rain and under tough conditions playing @ Foxboro which all the emotions of it all.

He could have played better but certainly had some bad drops by his receivers. But either way, it’s never been about only him. BUT… he’s clearly miles better than Jameis ever will be. Jameis single-handedly lost games, that’s the difference.

And, no, before you say it, didn’t just say all past losses were all Jameis’ fault, they certainly weren’t. Our Defense sucked a lot of times (like they still now now sometimes) and we had kicking issues that cost us games. BUT… that doesn’t take away from Jameis losing us many games ON HIS OWN with his terrible throws and terrible decision-making.
