Separation Among Bucs Greats

October 4th, 2021

The greatest coach in Buccaneers history is not up for debate.

Which Tampa Bay head coach has won the most playoff games? Bucco Bruce Arians.

And which head coach has the greatest winning percentage in the regular season? It’s Arians, and it’s a clear cut lead after last night’s thrilling win.

Arians is now 21-15 as a Bucs head coach during the regular season. That’s a .583 winning percentage, besting Father Dungy’s .563 mark during his six Bucs seasons.

Dungy was 2-4 in the playoffs with the Bucs; Arians is undefeated and Chucky is 3-2.

With three more regular-season wins, Arians, who turned 69 yesterday, will pass former head coach Sam Wyche on the franchise list for regular season wins, trailing only Dungy, Gruden and John McKay.

Joe hopes Team Glazer steps out of the box and puts Arians in the Buccaneers Ring of Honor next season. Don’t wait, guys. Life is too short.

    Dungy, #1
    Arians, #2
    McKay, #3
    Gruden, #4

If we were going by who is the best at destroying a team, then I’d certainly pick Gruden as #1.

Dungy is the only HOF’er on the list. Nothing against Arians, maybe he wins another 2 SB’s in the next two years and he’s a HOFer, and certainly moves up this list.

  2. Medicated Pete Says:

Dungy won 1 Superbowl riding Peyton Manning’s jock. So, every coach who had 1 ring should be in the Hall of Fame

  3. Young Buc Says:

Not to mention that Arians has a SB as a coordinator as well with the Steelers.

  4. NCFlorIdiot Says:

Who cares about all-time coach rankings… Why are we with all the weapons we have, not demolishing our opponents? JOE? I Hold YOU responsible for not taking it to them in the press conferences! Lol

  5. Medicated Pete Says:

Bucs next 2 games are 5 days apart 😳

  6. NCFlorIdiot Says:

And yes, Bruce Arians is the bomb, the best… Dungy created a beast (his offense was vanilla), Chucky put us over the top and won it, then tore it down (his ego) and sent our favorites on to other teams

Dungy won 1 Superbowl riding Peyton Manning’s jock

    ———

Manning’s rep to that point was choking in big games — and that team won the SB because of Dungy’s defense, which was the best in the NFL that year. Learn the basics, kiddo.

  8. Medicated Pete Says:

So, every coach w/ one Superbowl should be a HOF’er then

  9. Rod Munch Says:

Rod Munch- it would seen you forgot Dungy was FIRED for his inability to win the BIG games with the bucs. Defense was elite but we were always mediocre under Dungy.

  10. Lamarcus Says:

Dungy by far. Brady elevates everyone including Belichick

  11. ModHairKen Says:

Damn. I’m agreeing with Pete? Anyone who puts a guy who did not win a Super Bowl ahead of a guy who did is using the wrong criteria.

    1. Arians
    2. Gruden
    3. McKay
    4. Dungy
    5. Wyche
    6. There is no sixth.

Yes, what McKay did exceeds Dungy. No free agency. Started from scratch. Training facility was on an open porch.

Dungy change the culture in Tampa . The bucs was trash for years until Dungy came lol 😆 😂 . Dungy was one of the reasons I became a bucs fan back then. He brought wining to Tampa bay he built the team that’s why everyone knows that Gruden won with the team Dungy built.

  13. Youngbucs Says:

Hey fake young buc get off my name thx.

  14. Youngbucs Says:

It’s BA without a doubt because he also changed the culture here. But unlike dungy he has a ring here I love dungy though.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

I have trouble understanding why some media & fans insist on comparing head coaches from different eras; it’s totally irrelevant. So much of the results that HCs achieve is situationally-dependent.

For instance, does anyone really believe that Bruce Arians could win a Super Bowl with the same resources that Culverhouse provided to Sam Wyche? And it’s easy to forget what the Bucs were going through after our 2002 SB win in terms of our ownership (Manchester United? Malcolm’s health issues?).

Tony Dungy & Bruce Arians had the same ownership, but their initial situations were quite different and they approached them differently. Tony emphasized defense; Bruce emphasized offense. Both approaches can work, but there still has to be some semblance of BALANCE in there (as Dungy found out, and as Arians is also realizing right about now).

Dungy was an awesome coach. Changed the culture. Not HoF material.

  17. orlbucfan Says:

McKay came within 9 points of taking the Bucs to the NFL Championship in 1979. This was back in the days of azzhole cheapo Culverhouse, and new franchises had to build from scratch. His team set a record—making it to the championship level after only 4 years in existence. Not sure if that one has been broken yet. I rank him, BA/Bowles, and Dungy as the 3 best coaches Bucs have had.

  18. Aceofaerospace Says:

The fact that Dungy went in the HOF is a joke. Going long before Tom Flores is just plain insulting.

  19. Hodad Says:

Arains became the Bucs best head coach the moment Brady walked in the door. It ain’t the Xs, and Os, it’s the Jimmys, and Joes. I give Arains the most credit for ridding us of Winston, and Gerry McCoy.

  20. Buczilla Says:

I love Dungy, he’s a good man, and what he did to turn us around is almost hall of fame worthy in itself, but he won a Superbowl with another team “after” learning that balance is the key. He’s the third best coach in our history.

Gruden took a veteran team with the best defense in the history of the league and motivated them to be even better. No way Dungy pulls that off even if he had stayed here 20 years. Folks that say Gruden won with Dungy’s team are beyond silly or maybe just naive and parroting what they hear from others. Wyche drafted Sapp and Brooks, so does he get credit for Dungy’s turnaround? Of course not. Gruden added numerous offensive pieces and taught the entire offense a completely new scheme in less than a year on the way to our first Superbowl. That would make him hof worthy in my book if he hadn’t utterly destroyed the team due to his beef with McKay and his inability to properly evaluate talent. Gruden is still a good coach, but a gosh damn awful gm. He’s number two mainly due to accomplishing what Dungy never could until he changed his philosophy.

Arian’s not only turned our team around after years and years of horrible coaching, but he also won a Superbowl with us. He accomplished on his own in two years what took two coaches seven years to accomplish together. Arian’s is the obvious choice for number one and it’s not even close folks.

I think Sherman is a great addition.what I saw was his great appreciation to be apart of a great team.
