Buccaneers 19, New England 17

October 3rd, 2021

No style points tonight, but Joe and Bucs fans everywhere will take it.

A rainy, back-to-back road game is a tough task for any NFL team. Throw in the distraction of the incredible hype of Tom Brady returning to New England and a slew of injuries, and the Bucs had a small mountain to climb.

And they got to the top of the mountain.

Game ball for Ryan Succop for nailing the go-ahead, 48-yard field goal with 2 minutes remaining. Ice in his veins after an early miss on a slick field. Succop was 4-for-5 on the night.

The running game was the difference tonight offensively as the Bucs looked like anything but an electric, high-octane offense.

The pass defense was brutal, but Ross Cockrell had a huge tipped ball that Antoine Winfield, Jr. plucked out of the sky. It was a huge first-quarter play with the Patriots driving.

Brady didn’t have his best night, but the Bucs scored on their final three drives.

Ballgame. And a game of inches it is!

Our beloved Bucs are now atop the NFC South, tied with the Panthers at 3-1 and a game ahead of the slimy Saints.

  5. HC Grover Says:

Tied with Carolina in the division.

  6. jugheadfla Says:

can we talk about those last couple play? Refs blow the false start call and then then next pass play was caught out of bounds and they didn’t even review it? WTF?

  7. JimmyJack Says:

Tom didnt have a good game. His recievers gagged when it mattered(Brate out if the half)………….the defense won us this game. Thats a way to show up when needed!!! GO BUCS!!!!!!

  8. 163Doubleplay Says:

I will gladly take an ugly win anytime.

  9. Jersey buc Says:

Rough one. Refs absolutely sucked. But I’ll take the W.

Brady & Belichick = Quickest hug ever!!!

  13. unbelievable Says:

One of the ugliest wins I’ve seen but a W is a W

Hope Winfield and Davis are okay.

  14. Buczilla Says:

    Awesome win!

  15. BucsBro Says:

Horrible, horrible play call by the Bucs on 3rd and 8 to come back to AB after the missed route. You get the first down and run the clock.

Thankfully, Bellicheat did them one better by going for a 56 yard field goal in driving rain.

HUGE win. Our defense is trash now without the starting corners, but we’re 3-1 and maybe the offense can carry us for a bit.

Respect to Sherman for suiting it up tonight. We needed him and he made a play on the fumble recovery.

  16. Wild Bill Says:

Gonna be a long season! Left tackle was beat all night long. Brady was off. 76 sucked. Our run defense was our best performers. Pass coverage and fat boy 76 were lousy.

  17. JimmyJack Says:

Doosh Donnie is our CAP saving next year. He has been bad in most games and was bad much of last year. With Tom here we can find a decent tackle. Donnie arent decent.

  18. King C Says:

Bucs did well to win. Any win over Beli at Foxboro is an accomplishment.

  19. Colonel Angus Says:

Can’t forget to mention the obvious bad calls by the refs. Criminal in my opinion.

  20. Bucsfan1988 Says:

JugheadFla, these joke of officials blew a crap-ton of calls against Bucs tonite.

The most atrocious DPI calls I’ve ever seen in my life.
These clowns need to understand what DPI is…

So sick of the one-sided calls this year….

It’s got wayyyyyy out of hand these last 2 games….

  21. Swampbuc Says:

Way to get the W under huge duress, DBs dropping like flies again. No Gronky. Wet ball hurt us more than them. Lenny came up big.

The bye can’t get here soon enough.

  22. Buc4evr Says:

I’ll take it, but pure torture. Brady looked bad, defense looked bad, WR’s looked bad. At least we have Succop to save our miserable butts for another week.

  23. tampabuscsbro Says:

    Ugly UGLY UGLY WIN

but still a win. OUR MAN BRADY HAS BEAT EVERY NFL TEAM AND BILLY B IS REALLY MAD DIDN’T EVEN LOOK AT BRADY HAHAHAHAH.

Also time to trade for DBs.

  24. JimmyJack Says:

BucsBro…..horrible playcall? That was a TD that Brown dropped

  25. Colonel Angus Says:

Ain’t no ugly win in the NFL, no style points, no rankings to impress. It looks the same in the win column.

  26. Colin in Canada Says:

    We’ll take the win.

    Gronk was missed today.

  27. alaskabuc Says:

@jugheadfla- it’s all about the money. The NFL doesn’t like that the small market Bucs are hogging all the attention from the Cowboys, Packers, Steelers, etc. so they are doing everything in their power to make it as difficult as possible for us to win.
Also with Vegas invested heavily in the NFL, who knows what might go on with officiating to make sure the odds stay with the house.

  28. PassingThru Says:

Yep, JimmyJack is right. Brown usually comes down with those.

That’s the type of TD pass you want. It barely cleared the DB where only the WR could catch it.

  29. ModHairKen Says:

Spot on Joseph. Great summary. You said it all.

  30. Timbucs2 Says:

Holy crap. Off passes by Brady early, dropped passes by Brate, Evans, and AB. So much for the elite WR corps. Is there going to be a game where we put it together?

We missed Gronk, he is Brady’s security blanket.

  31. Adrnagy Says:

referees. Almost cost us a game.

  32. Snail Says:

Two wins this year where we got lucky. We are a shadow of our former selves. Best I can say is we used to be on the losing end of games like this, so at least we have improved in that regard.

  33. Jerry Says:

Secondary continues to get more and more banged up every week.

  34. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Patriots rushed for minus one yards

  35. mg Says:

They don’t have to worry about peaking early this season.

  36. PassingThru Says:

Do you guys realize that Evans and Godwin were erased for the most part by a very good defensive secondary?

  37. Bucsfan951 Says:

Did the bucs play lights out tonight? Far from it! But they are really dealing with injuries to key players (see starting 3 cbs). A win is a win and I am going to enjoy this one! Before slamming how the bucs played, sleep on it and when you wake up, think of all of the players that are injured.

  38. Doctor Stroud Says:

    The bend-don’t-break defense lives!!!

  39. BucsBro Says:

JimmyJack — too risky. Just get the first down, control the clock and get the win.

We couldn’t do anything against their offense once Davis went down. You can’t leave them with 2:00 left on the clock. Even if you’re up 6 (or 7 if you go for two).

Also, it’s raining and you’re throwing for 40 yards. Pass and catch have to be perfect. Just a dumb call.

I love AB and trust him totally, but bad call and bad clock management. We had an offensive groove. Drive it down their throws, run the clock and kick a short FG for the win.

This is where “risk it, biscuit” sucks. Going for big plays when they’re not needed.

Bellicheat saved us, as did our defense by making the key plays at the end.

  40. jim Says:

Arians should have gone for two after the touchdown!

  41. tampabuscsbro Says:

Yes terrible play call they shouldn’t have taken two shots in a row at the end zone.

Also Brown didn’t drop it that was too far.

  42. PassingThru Says:

I wish Tampa Bay had a defensive secondary like that, but you cannot have everything. The CBA pretty much guarantees it.

  43. BucsBro Says:

PassingThru — Pats defense is for real. I wasn’t sure, but yeah they’re good.

Of course, our offense sucks at the moment. But still Pats defense is good.

    Strong work by Lenny tonight.

  44. Colonel Angus Says:

2-0 on prime time so far. So there’s that.

  45. BucsBro Says:

Tampabucsbro — yep, on both counts. I thought the pass was slightly too far also.

  46. Buc1987 Says:

The rain sucked and there’s that.

They got the ugly win in an ugly rain.

The offense just has too many weapons though and should have scored more despite the rain.

  47. MattyFootball Says:

Not one comment or mention about AB stepping up big time for us. Joe constantly hates on AB and he stepped up in big moments tonight. Show him some love for once Joe!!!

  48. August 1976 Buc Says:

Every week will be a survival test, just not competative right now in the secondary. They are a walking mash unit. The offense has to play much better for the Bucs to have anywhere near a winning record.

People can say they brought all 22 back, but right now, that is not team that is on the field because of injuries.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  49. mg Says:

Horribly played game by O, D and special teams. The Patriots are not good. The Bucs are not good. The Bucs coaching staff has some work to do. Find the next man up.

  50. Knoxville Bucs Fan Says:

I’ve seen enough of D. Smith He will eventually be the reason The Goat retires earlier than he wanted to if he doesn’t pick his game up!!! (Actually earlier than we all want him to) Is the covid opt out option still a option?

  51. Defense Rules Says:

A win is a win, but damn that was beyond ugly. Bucs should’ve run away with that game, but instead we kept letting them hang around & hang around until they almost won it (2″ right on the last FG attempt is all it would’ve taken).

We whooped them in Turnover Differential (2-0), in TOP (34 mins – 26 mins), in plays (74-54), in rushing yards (119-0), in Sacks (4-1), in 3rd/4th down efficiency (9-for-19 versus 2-for-9) … the list goes on. But we kept pissing away opportunities to really control the game. Does not bode well for the future.

    jugheadfla Says:
“can we talk about those last couple play? Refs blow the false start call and then then next pass play was caught out of bounds and they didn’t even review it?”
    .
    .

Refs covered the spread and almost flipped the whole script.

  53. Rod Munch Says:

Would rather win a sloppy game than lose it.

But we’re 4 games into the season and have yet to see anything remotely close to a good game all around.

With that said, that means you’re a good team, when you can go 3-1 and haven’t even remotely played your best football yet.

A typical Bucs team would be 1-3 right now playing this way. I’d put almost all of that difference on Brady, and why he’s the goat. But injuries are also killing this team the same way they killed the 2003 team. I don’t know what you can do about that other than, oh, I don’t know, not playing your only good corner on special teams. Idiot.

  54. FortMyersDave Says:

Winning ugly is better than playing well in a loss. There are no moral victories in the NFL, just wins and losses. Bring on the Fins now who seem to have kind of gone into a free fall after a close win in Foxboro and an OT loss to Chuckie. Like the Pats, the Fins do not have much of a passing attack so hopefully the Bucs secondary do not let Jacoby Brissett (or whoever the Fin QB) look like Kurt Warner and the ’99 Rams and the Bucs simply come home and go to 4-1 next Sunday.

  55. FrankPillow Says:

We lost this exact game last year to the Bears. Keep that in mind. It was brutally ugly at times and we lucked into Nick Folk missing one (brings back memories)—the most concerning thing to me is how Bruce just doesn’t seem to be as engaged on the sidelines. He might be a little too hands off right now.

  56. Knoxville Bucs Fan Says:

How about the rookie getting two sacks! Dude has some BLAZING speed!!! Over pursues most of the time. Heck of a job by Vita clearing out that whole left side of the line to allow JT get inside to eat

  57. LakelandSteve Says:

Guess what this game goes into the win column no matter how bad we played. Really disappointed in our left tackle tonight. A couple times he looked like he was chasing butterflies instead of blocking. A real step back for him tonight. Huge concerns in the secondary in the next few weeks.

  58. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

Rough game with or without the refs. Brady looked like he was probably too amped to start the game. Lot of overthrow.

The early interference on Sherman was straight horse puckey.

3rd and 18 in the 2nd quarter: why the he’ll didn’t Brady check out of a screen pass when NE defense came with a naked 3-man rush? Of course they stopped it. Brady could have sat in the pocket forever.

Whitehead had a sick tackle at the LOS where he blew through blocks by the right tackle AND the fullback.

I always supported RoJo, but he blew a block AGAIN. Durable Donnie probably took credit for the sack, but he knew 27 was supposed to chip. The end took an outside lane and Jones just ran right into the back of Smith and effed the whole situation up. He still has his head in his arse, looking like the hamster man.

Sherman, Cockrell, and Desir looked no worse together than Davis, Dean, and Bunting. I really hate saying that.

Mac Jones tied Tom Brady’s team record at 19 straight completions. Congratulations goes to Bucs defense. Honorable mention to Mac, who looked like an NFL quarterback. He was going through progressions and has a brady-like quick release.

AB: what the heck, man? I know the ball was wet, but still. He shoulda had like a 150 yard game.

Even with a couple of bad calls, the Bucs had less than 10 penalties for a change.

Only 5 Buccaneer receivers had catches tonight. Makes it easy on the defense when you are only targeting a few guys. Not a good look.

Belichick made a point of giving Brady a congratulatory hug before he even looked for Arians. Kinda put the bull spit to the long week of idiotic media narrative.

  59. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

I’m more relieved that this game is over than I am happy we won. Trying to figure out what is happening to our high powered offense with too many targets for anyone to be able to cover. 🤨

  60. Tim R. Says:

Because of the rain you had to know that it was going to be a close one. Jones tried to go after Sherman early but he was ok. He will be better. What know does Bruce do about the secondary. The offence is going to need to be much better in the coming weeks. Every opponent is going to throw the pass against us. Ariana and Bowles must come up with something.

  61. John Says:

Super Bowl champs always get the opponents A game. The emotion of the game and the rain deterged the offense. Gronk was missed in the red zone. Need a couple of games against low competition.
