The Buccaneers’ rookie first-round pick opened up last night.
Joe Tyron-Shoyinka was on Bucs Total Access at Buccaneers.com sharing all kinds of nuggets about his rookie experience today.
Joe’s got highlights:
*After starting Sunday for Jason Pierre-Paul, Tryon-Shoyinka said he’s “feeling it” in his body. Being a backup before yesterday, he said, challenged him “to keep that competitive mindset” daily.
*What did coaches tell outside linebackers while watching film of Sunday’s loss to the Rams? Tryon-Shoyinka said it was all about how “they have to get to the quarterback.” He went on to mention the challenge of chip blocks in the NFL.
*The rookie acknowledged “I need to keep earning that trust,” referring to showing that he can beat an offensive tackle 1-on-1 in order to get maxiumum playing time. He said Todd Bowles had made it an easy transition for him because his reads have not been complex.
*Tryon-Shoyinka really enjoys special teams, he said, citing a lot of fun playing with fellow rookie linebackers Grant Stuard and K.J. Britt and “the brotherhood” that is the special teams unit.
*Studying Tae Kwon Do for six years as a kid helped him in sports, Tryon-Shoyinka said. He got in trouble as a little kid so his family thought it would be discipline for him.
*Tryon said he had college offers to play tight end but he didn’t want to get hit. He prefers to do the hitting.
*The rookie’s biggest NFL surprise? Keeping a game jersey costs $750. “I was like, for this?”
*Donovan Smith helps the rookie after games, on the team plane was one example Tryon-Shoyinka gave. He said Smith explains what he’s seeing on Tryon-Shoyinka’s rushes and points out specific success for him to build on. Tyron-Shoyinka says he definitely listens intently to Smith and trusts him.’
*On Jason Pierre-Paul: he admires JPP for always being the aggressor in games, and his screaming and passion at practice.
*Joe didn’t realize JPP was still doing gymnastics, but Tryon-Shoyinka says he is. “He’s really an alien,”Tryon-Shoyinka said of JPP, noting he’s noticed how everyone feeds of JPP’s energy.
*Tryon-Shoyinka said Julius Peppers, JPP and Cliff Avril and other Seahawks were among the players he liked watching as a kid, and he says he watched a lot of football.
*As for the crazy-hyped Bucs-Patriots came coming up on Sunday, Tryon-Shoyinka says he’s not into the drama but the reality for Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski is unavoidable. “We all know that’s where they came from. We don’t want to be the ones to not help the team win,” he said.

Like the kid..and think he’ll eventually produce….but it’s time to turn the almost into sacks & hits……he’s getting lots of slack but he’s a first round pick and other first round pass rushers have gotten to the QB.
What bothers me most is that we are the top blitzing team in the NFL & neither our CBs or Safties have a sack….this year or last year….ZERO….
That’s just not acceptable.

He did a good job on sunday. I can’t fault him for no sacks in his first game as a starter as a late first round pick. He forced an incompletion and got a hit. That’s better then most of our rookies first outing as a starter in recent years.

I thought he looked the part. After he was getting pretty close, the Rams started to account for him with doubles and chips. He gets his first sack this week. Love that he talks and breaks things down with Donovan Smith. Kid seems to have his head in straight

He has the potential of being a starter someday, last Sunday wasn’t the day. He just doesn’t have what it takes yet. Ideally he should be in the rotation in the fourth quarter when a win is assured. I’m not sold on him for anything other than third string at this point as he is often not able to set the edge and can’t get past even slow footed tackles. Not ready for prime time, he should have never been put in the position he was on Sunday.

So far, ‘Plan 9 From Outer Space’. He looks small out there to me. Unlike a D line player. Hope he can improve on the attack. Seemed like he was attacking too much head on at the Rams tackles not around the edge of them. He is not big enough to push them around.

Yeah looks pretty skinny compared to the tackle and guard… still a college type player…. Not a starter at this point… no business lining up against the Rams. I’m not sure what all the hype is about this guy… meh.

I’m a bit disappointed in him so far, but that might be my fault listening to all the armchair gurus on the internet rave about him… Unfair expectations, hopefully one day but I haven’t seen it yet.

I really like this kid I really hope it works out I think he has a great attitude The entire offensive line should be helping him with pointers and whatever tricks they know about.

Seems like he has a good head on his shoulders for sure.
Hope he can get more consistent and start winning some 1 on 1s, especially since Shaq has gone MIA again.

I think a lot of people forget he sat out last year. It’s not easy being out for a year playing college ball and in his third NFL game gets the start. Playing right defensive end he is going up against most teams best pass protector. I thought he played pretty well all things considered. In college he could probably just lineup and out class the guy in front of him. In the NFL he has to work at his craft, listen to the vets and study tape of the guys he will be going up against. It’s really hard to say what kind of pass rusher he can turn in to. He is definitely talented and if he really wants to bad enough may become a real good defensive end/outside linebacker. But, everyone needs to give him time to develop and take his lumps.
