Dominik Almost Overconfident

April 16th, 2010

Joe’s read all the various quotes and reports that came out of Mark Dominik talking to the MSM yesterday. And Joe heard Dominik on the air with the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig.

There wasn’t much that moved Joe, outside of Dominik admitting his Bucs future is on the line with the upcoming draft. And, of course, Dominik didn’t reveal a whole hell of a lot.

But Joe was intrigued by a couple of things.

First, Dominik mentioned several times that he had 12 months to prepare for the draft. Joe can only imagine how much better prepared the Bucs are this season than last.

Aside from being thrown into the GM job in mid-January, back then Dominik was probably devoting far too much of his football brain and astute preparation skills into hiring Jeff Jagodzinski and Jim Bates.

Second, Dominik says he’s ready for the draft right now and has played out loads of possible scenarios. Joe feels a little uncomfortable by this kind of overconfidence.

Maybe it’s just a show for the media, but Joe would feel better if Dominik was talking about working 24/7 to leave no stone unturned before the draft, especially with the draft being a full week away.

Perhaps Joe’s just too hypersensitive because he’s riddled with angst about the Bucs’ receiving corps and their draft history to feel as good as Dominik.

    Joe,

Off topic, but if you get the chance throw us out a critique of C/B Akwasi Owusu-Ansah Div 2 player. 6’0, 207, 4.3 speed.

  2. DungyLoverLiberal Says:

Perhaps Joe is too hypersensitive… you just can’t for next Thursday Joe can ya?

What will you do after we win the super bowl of the draft next weekend?

  3. d-money Says:

I sure wouldn’t want him to say he isn’t prepared a week before the draft.

I don’t think that feeling like they are prepared means they are going to sip cocktails on the beach for the next week.

  4. Eric Says:

I am sure none of the other 31 GM’s feel ill-prepared.

Some have also heard of this thing they call the draft.

Very fortunately for all in Bucdom, our GM (lap-lap-lap-), and the Dream are Supercalifragilisticexpialidociously prepared!

  5. TpaBayFlyFisher Says:

It is clear that some GMs draft better than others-the proof is the players they put on the field. So what has Mr. D done to make anyone think he can tell a good football player from a flop? Face it, most of the real NFL GMs laugh at our selections………………

    Joe,

I know you are financially connected to Duemig and Clearchannel (and appreciate you acknowledging that) but what a worthless and soft interview by the big dog yesterday.

He praised the sammy stroughter draft pick as if he is Jerry Rice all the while completely ignoring Moore, Miller etc who haven’t shown anything. Nobody knows what Josh Freeman will be yet.

He just lobbed softballs at the kid and many times answered the questions for him by building the company line answer into the question. I bet at least 6 times the kid started his answer by saying something like “well said” or “that wouldd be an accurate statement.”

I believe that Duemig needs to come out and admit his bias like Joe did or I will never have any shred of respect for his opinions on the bucs. Yes I know his show is about entertainment first but to continuously make shameless excuses for blunder after blunder is not entertainment..

  7. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Thomas – Let it be an example here that your post is not being edited since it does not slam Duemig on a personal level outside the realm of sports. …Anyway, that said, I don’t think it’s fair to say Roy Miller didn’t show anything. Also, knowing Duemig, his takes are genuine and what he believes. He’s not playing a game or towing a line. Doesn’t mean you must agree. Of course, Joe doesn’t always agree. Life would be awfully boring if we all agreed. But it’s really not accurate to say that Duemig has any company-related, Bucs-ClearChannel bias.

  8. George C. Costanza Says:

you worry too much, Joe. remain calm. all will be revealed in the fullness of time.

  9. thomas Says:

    Thanks Joe.

However you didn’t address the point about how soft the interview was. For example, when he broached the subject about the team trading down to avoid the 3rd pick price tag – Duemig anticipated the answer by saying something like – “money is not the decisive factor is it.”

Duemig did not ask a single specific question about the weak receiving corp and just set-up the answer when he briefly touched on Brandon Marshall by offering “well the 2nd round pick for Marshall this year equals a first.”

Come on Steve, let the kid answer the question for goodness sake! Yes the kid will likely say the same thing but why even interview him if you are going to tell him what to say..

    Thanks for the forum Joe.

    take the win, brosef

  11. gruss222 Says:

Rah is worthless, Dom sucks, Duemig swallows the kool-aid, Joe kisses Duemig’s BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!!!!!!

Do any of you depressing, nothing to live for losers, have anything in your worthless lives that you feel good about???

There are at least 15 of you that I can go back, cut and paste your last 100 post and they will all repeat the same negative crap over and over and over.

Joe post his opinions, Duemig speaks his opinions, Dom and Rah are doing what either they believe is right or what they are being directed to do by their superiors. Get over the suckin-azz conspiracies and go find your next negative rant to poast about!

  12. tampa2 Says:

    @Thomas,
In the 15 minutes or so that I lestened to that sports personality yesterday, the thing that most bothered me was that the sports personality brought up the fat that Dominik was in the scouting Dep’t for years, including being in charge of it, and said that the scouting
Dep’t was “not” responsible for any of the bad picks because Gruden/Allen made the final decision. I’m sure that the Gm or HC has more on their agenda than going around the country compiling information on potential recruits. And I am sure that they trust their scouting Dep’t to make them aware of each recruits potential. If not, then why even have a scouting Dep’t? The bottom line is that Gruden/Allen, in all probablity took the list of potential recruits and chose from their lists. If the scouts sucked, then so did the potential list. But we’ll find out next week when there is no Allen/Gruden to blame it on. And the personality should acknowledge that!

  13. Eric Says:

    @gruss222

Nope this is pretty much it.

But, i must say irritating a goober like you is geting the weekend off to a good start.

  14. JimBuc Says:

Joe hypersensitive? I thought that was understood given all the trivial minutiae we discuss on this site. (j/k Joe)

  15. gruss222 Says:

    @Eric

I guess you would be the first one to step up and claim ownership of being one of the subjects I may have been referring to. Unlike yourself, I do not need to stoop to childish name calling of named subjects. I stated a personal belief in a broad manner without singling any one person out and you just have to chirp in with your 3rd grade banter.

You do not have the intelligence to carry on a rational conversation. I truly believe you just have a list of cut and paste negative rants. Go back to the feces hole in which you dwell and we’ll all be happier for it.

  16. OAR Says:

gruss222, I took offense to your “wide broad manner” also. Do you realize that sounds like you are calling out everyone on here? And love how you throw around the third grader banter to describe someone, yet you use “feces hole in which you dwell” in another sentence?! Wow you must still be angry you didnt get your full nap or someone pissed in your cheerios.
BTW We will stop using “cut and paste” comments, as soon as the team’s headcoach, GM, and owners stop pulling the same ole crap and show us something to be positive about. We aren’t making any of these moves or no moves up!

  17. Eric Says:

    @gruss222

Im really sorry man, I feel awful if my posts are boring and not as clever and insightful as yours.

I could never come up with something as clever as “feces hole”. Awesome!

I can see now your writing skills, intelligence, and wit are beyond my limited abilities.

I await in spellbound anticipation for your next brilliant and informative post, as I am sure all in Joebucsfan.com do also.

  18. JimBuc Says:

Interesting that Eric and Oar responded to gruss22’s comments. Telling. (j/k)

  19. Dave Says:

Sounds like JOE is over analyzing this WAAAAAAAAAAAY too much. That whole interview was excellent. Mark D said all the right things and it sounds like the organization has done all the right things.

If you are overconfident, yu don’t hire an outside consultant to get a different perspective, as he did with Bill Rees. It sounds to me like he is covering every base and can’t wait to get going.

  20. Dave Says:

    Thomas:

Mark D has come out several times this week and said “finances in NO WAY affect how we will draft” I do not want to stick up for the Glazers lack of spedning, but they have laid out a good argument lately and Mark D can’t be any more blunt than that. What else is someone supposed to ask with regards to the draft and money?

  21. BBS Says:

    @tampa 2

Dominik was in charge of the ‘PRO’ personnel scouting not the collegiate scouting, meaning he was in charge of scouting pro players from other teams or professional leagues, not college players that were draft eligable. Therefore he wouldnt be responsible for the scouting and ranking of college players.

  22. Dave Says:

    TpaBayFlyFisher Says:

I don’t get this at all. Some of you just bash Mark D over and over yet he has not actually drafted ANYONE until last year. prior to that bruce Allen had control with Gruden and before thatothers were in charge.

It is, partially, a different draft team with different guidance and different values and different procedures on how they draft. They have had one draft that, so far looks okay, but it is too early to tell. this is only draft 2.

How come some of you do not understand this? It isn’t that difficult.

  23. mlloye Says:

You can not talk shit about last years draft, Yet. Grading these kids is like grading a test before they have time to finish it. These kids are still growing into Pros. Freeman showed potential, (it took Eli Manning almost 4 yrs), Strouter showed potential, Miller showed potential, Biggers was injured, that DE was injured (cant remember his name) but he showed potential at the end of the season. Thats 5 players that could still be very good. Like Joe said , Dominic has had more time this year (without all the BS) to study film and to grade players for this draft. Give these guys a fu@$ing break already. If they (Dom & Rah) dont pull it off this season than they will not have jobs next season. Re-building is painfull, but it is worth it to have another team that will play good for 10yrs than to throw a group of guys together that might only give us 2 good yrs. “Alot” of teams are doing the same thing including the Steelers.

  24. JimBuc Says:

Dave — the answer is because they don’t want to

  25. OAR Says:

Dave, The Bucs scouting college department is still directed by Dennis Hickey and has been for 6 years and he was part of the college scouting with the Bucs for 7. A total of 13 years. So how is this Raheem’s and Dom’s college scouting different?
But, I will wait and see. With this draft so deep, I feel they can’t go too wrong.

  26. OAR Says:

BBS, “…not college players that were draft eligable. Therefore he wouldnt be responsible for the scouting and ranking of college players.”
That’s exactly why he needs his scouting department and why he hired a consultant to this years draft.

  27. Eric Says:

Actually I think if you guys would check the buccaneer staff you would see that the college scouting department is almost entirely carry overs from the previous regime. Nfl.com is a good source for that.

The Director of College scouting has been there for many years, Dennis Hickey.

I agree that Mr. Dom is now the man is charge and is doing things his way, as he should. But he has many of the same cast in place.

  28. OAR Says:

Jimbuc, Won’t be the first or the last time I responded to some idiots on here. Uh oh, is this post also too “telling”, lol!

  29. thomas Says:

    Dave:

Dom has said that finances in “NO WAY” effect this draft. The question is: do you believe it? I dont. Ian Beckels doesnt. Eric doesnt. I am sure that many others agree.

My bet is that they trade down. If I am wrong, my bet is that they will have trouble signing the picck at #3. If I am wrong on bth counts so be it.

Lets be clear: I do not hate Dom or Rah. I am not angry that they are in the org. I am bothered that they are in the positions that they are in, not because of merit but because of their relative costs. I would like Dom as an asst GM, and Rah as a D Coordinator with a legit H.C. I walked into RayJay week 1 in total support of both. What I saw was embarrassing, and I grew to despise both in the jobs that they were thrust into b/c they accepted them for pennies on the dollar.

Money will be a heavy factor this year, in my judgment. i.e. the receiving corp.

  30. tampa2 Says:

    @Thomas.
Good Post!, My sentiments exactly! I think they will trade down too. If Suh is on the board and they trade down that proves they are dead broke.

  31. Mr. lucky Says:

Guys – we need Joe to start a poll about who you think the Bucs will draft in the 1st round and another poll about whom YOU would draft.

Another poll – do you think the Bucs will draft at the #3 spot or trade down…

As for being worried about Dominik and his confidence…go for it. I’m not saying anything negative. I’ll wait and see what the draft holds.

If if’s and but’s were candy and nuts what a wonderful Chistmas it would be…

  32. Mr. lucky Says:

Hey Joe, is there any way YOU can get an exclusive interview with Dominik before the draft? How about this one: you get questions from your LOYAL readers and pre-submit them to Dominik (like 7 questions) and only take 30 minutes of his time…You could transcribe the interview into like a 5 part series one a day leading up to the draft…

That would give us plenty of stuff to argue about until then…heck maybe Grumpy Gruss would even have more entertaining posts as well…

  33. Mr. lucky Says:

PS. I KNOW Dominik will say he’s too busy but bribe himwith a case of Caybrew – if he goes for the idea I’ll foot the Caybrew bill!

  34. Patrick Says:

Look, I haven’t been real happy with Dominik and Raheem ever since they were *given* their jobs.

But when you look at both of them right next to each other, Dominik seems like th e brains of the group.

    Dominik is ok i guess.

Raheem just seems like he’s completely incompetent. He hasn’t proven to me that he has a brain yet.

  35. JimBuc Says:

OAR, you could just put your name and we would all know what you meant. Think about that for a second.

The Buc scouting staff might be the same but what has changed? C’mon you know you just don’t want to say it . . . . Gruden/Allen . . . . the guys making the decision. With the possible exception of Hickey, the other guys just turn in reports for the GM and coach to use. Replace the guys who pull the trigger and you chnange the draft, The Bucs have actually taken is a step further by bringin in an outside consultant to evaluate their own players and the top college prospects and to be another voice on draft day. They still might not get them all right, but it is not for a lack of trying

  36. JimBuc Says:

Tampa2 — the Bucs have been very profitable for years and even ManU has been turning a big profit since last year. Do you know the meaning of the word “broke?” Oh . . . wait . . . you’re the guy that thinks Sileo was telling the truth about the Glazers and Madoff . . . . NEVER MIND.

  37. Eric Says:

    Mr. Jimbuc,

Hows it going sir, all ready for the draft?

  38. JimBuc Says:

Can’t wait Eric. How about you?

  39. Eric Says:

Should be an interesting evening, i see the rams will not be signing Bradford prior to the draft, so its all up in the air.

Much different than last year with it pretty much determined Josh would be the guy.

Who do you expect the bucs to go with?

  40. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Nice to see all the love and cameraderie. Joe is touched.

  41. JimBuc Says:

Suh or McCoy a DE and a WR

  42. Eric Says:

yea my top four best players for the bucs are Suh, Berry, Bryant, and Spiller.

Unlikely the bucs can get more than one of those with such a high pic, then a long time to round two, and I doubt they are interested in Spiller.

Actually, trading down might not be such a bad move, but not if Manbeast Suh is there.

Im hoping the Rams havent been blowing smoke on this Bradford stuff.

  43. jake Says:

It will be interesting to see if the Skins make a move with Haynesworth prior to the draft and if they do how it will effect the picks

  44. TpaBayFlyFisher Says:

Dave, Fly knows at least one NFL executive who laughs at the Bucs’ current leaders and the decisions they have made [have you already forgotten Jags and Bates?]……….you probably believe in the tooth fairy too……..

  45. Patrick Says:

We should sign Terrell Owens. He’s a veteran receiver who still has quite a bit of talent in him. Sign him to a 2 year contract for a reasonable amount of money. We’re limiting ourselves to too little by putting the whole future in the draft! I know that he may not be the best teammate, but he’s no where near as bad as Marshall or Holmes! You do have to respect Owens in the fact that he’s never had off the field issues. He’s not a criminal like many other guys in the league.

  46. Jonny Says:

@ Patrick: “Raheem hasn’t proven to me that he has a brain yet.”

I know from his press conferences Raheem seems like he does not know what he’s talking about. But from those few games he took control over our defense, you cannot really say he has no brain. I might not be the specialist on this issue, but I liked the way how he mixed things up on defense in some games.

  47. Patrick Says:

    @ Jonny

I do agree that Raheem did a good job when he took over the defense. For that, I give him an A+.

What I meant in my comment above, is that Raheem hasn’t shown me that he has any common sense. Why on earth would you hire a defensive cordinator that teaches a scheme that your players aren’t accustomed to? That was just plain stupidity, and is a direct result of him having no experience. Seriously, that’s just common sense.

I think every coach in the NFL has done “some” good things for their franchise. But Raheem has done more bad then good as of now. He’s wasted a tremendous amount of money on players that were either benched, cut, or underperforming by the end of the season. He fired his offensive cordinator right before the season. Come on Raheem, that dooms you right there. The firing was once again a result of him not doing his homework on hiring the right man in the first place.

It’s disastrous things like these that make you afraid of having Raheem as the man in charge here.

  48. Tooth Fairy Says:

    @Tpaflyfisher

Hey don’t knock it buddy. I’m working my azz off in this recession – sorry I didn’t chime in earlier but I make lots of money cruisig over at JoeBoltsfan.com – business is good! 😉
