The Next Level For Antoine Winfield, Jr.
September 22nd, 2021Antoine Winfield, Jr., wasn’t on his best tackling game Sunday and through two games he isn’t looking like a 2021 Pro Bowler, but Todd Bowles spoke this week about where Winfield is growing.
“Now that he’s in his second year, he needs to start learning the offensive side of the ball, too, and he has been,” Bowles said as a guest on The Bruce Arians Show on Buccaneers.com.
“And I think he has gotten a great maturity and experience from seeing certain things and just being around Jordan [Whitehead] quite a bit. He talks to Lavonte [David] a lot, and talking to Lavonte a lot the game has really slowed down for him. I think he’s playing at a good level and he’s in a good place mentally.”
Joe’s excited to see how 23-year-old Winfield can develop through the season. Despite his shiny Super Bowl ring and having a retired three-time Pro Bowl cornerback for a dad, there is no substitute for time on the field and superior coaching.
Bowles added that David is a great coach for players and Devin White has quickly been able to read Bowles’ mind and his mental growth has been impressive.
Joe’s glad to hear about Winfield seeking out David and others. Joe hopes Winfield eventually gets into Tom Brady’s mind, as well. That’s too valuable a resource.

I mean he is ok but his speed probably puts a glass ceiling over him. He is not not that fast but Lynch wasn’t either. Maybe

It is good that he is learning more, as long as he doesn’t forget other things, like how to tackle. He has just plain miffed a few this year.

Since when is a 4.45 40 time slow? I know football is more than a 40 time, but he doesn’t look slow to me.

Beady eyed Max Kellerman and Skinny Shnozol Nick Wright should get their own show on BSPN called to haters jumping off a cliff!
Maybe their first guess could be Brady hating “Moniker Joey”

Lamarcus … Winfield has great anticipation it looks like (much like Ronde Barber did). That helps compensate for any lack of blazing speed more than anything IMO. Where the difference with John Lynch is really pronounced I think is size. Folks forget that Lynch was BIG (6’2″ & 220 lbs). And he knew how to use every ounce of that to drive through ball-carriers when tackling like very few I’ve ever seen.

Bought a shirt with that picture. Basically covers my whole chest. Makes people know what’s up

AW jr… KICK SOME ASS SUNDAY!!!!! YOU ARE OVERDUE!!! GO BUCS!!

That was yesterday’s game. Today’s game in this passing league Whitfield is too slow which might put a ceiling what he can do. Could be a great box safety but we can’t expect Whitfield not to get beat deep if he gets caught out there. Also we need a consistent pass rush to make any of our dbs to look decent. Otherwise it’s a nightmare waiting to happen

Ah yes, remember the good old days… when being a big hitter was a good thing, and could change a game?

Great minds…
If we continue to play soft off coverage, we will get slanted and wheel routed to death. I say we just maul them at the line, legally of course.. to give the line a chance to get home.

Agree. Especially with the current situation with these dbs. Idk what the solution is. We can’t keep blitzing. We can’t go man to man either. We can’t do cover 2. Idk been on my mind for 2 games now
September 22nd, 2021 at 6:52 pm
Yup. Scheme can’t always cover for lack of talent.
Stafford/McVay are salivating over Cockrell, and I don’t know who we have that’s gonna run with Kupp.
But, that’s why they play the games right?
September 22nd, 2021 at 6:57 pm
I like the thought of Edwards/Whitehead/Winfield in the game at the same time…especially vs the Rams. This is a difficult match up on both sides of the ball for the Bucs.
September 22nd, 2021 at 7:07 pm
Last year some of you said that Winfield Jr. was too short. This year, some of you say he’s too slow. The Bucs won a Super Bowl with him, so I think whoever says he’s too short/slow is incorrect.
September 22nd, 2021 at 7:15 pm
cus … I agree ‘that was yesterday’s game’; different skillsets are needed today. Winfield probably has more in common with Ronde than he does with John Lynch.
Last year, in our last 8 games in particular, our Secondary was really gelling I thought (excellent chemistry). Todd Bowles seem to be very adept at maximizing each individual player’s talents to achieve a ‘greater whole’ so to speak. Having SMB go down in Game 1 may have impacted the Secondary’s chemistry, but they’ll get it together in time I think.
What would help them more than anything though is for our pass rush to start dominating like it did in the 2nd half of last season, even against these quick release QBs. Personally think we’re also blitzing too much & compromising our short coverage as a consequence. Seeing far too many receivers running free on the short & intermediate routes.

Man it’s a miracle the Bucs even made the playoffs last year with all this lousy talent, and a magoo for a head coach. Bad drafting GM. Oh if we could only get Dominik, Raheehaw, EJ Biggers and Myron Lewis back.

Am I missing something here?

I like the pedigree. I like the swagger. And I damn sure love that peace sign.

Some of the fans on this site are just plain stupid. They criticize d. White, d. Smith, m. Evans, d. Smith, winfield etc all home grown talent but these same posters will throw their newborn in front of a bus if BA says brady made a mistake by holding on to the ball too long. Smdh. All yall saying what these players ie evans, winfield, white, smith etc cant do dont even realize teams would be lining up outside of one buc place to get these players if they were on the open market. Be thankful for what you have smdh
September 22nd, 2021 at 9:22 pm
Right on Defense Rules. Barber was slow as hell, but one one of the smartest players ever. Being able to read and react before the ball is thrown, is what matters most. Of course the guys who can do both are your truly elite players.
Swampbuc, it’s hard to believe the Bucs are on a 10 game win streak, as lousy as they are. Some people just like to b!tch. I know am enjoying being a Bucs fan right now, we all know this ride ends when TB12 boards that spacecraft and heads back to his home world.

Webster our secondary has been weak for years. Surely you can see that.
I love Winfield, but I’m not fond of the “business decision” he made facing Patterson in the hole last Sunday. That was weak.
September 22nd, 2021 at 11:00 pm
Jmark…our whole defense has been weak for years. Our kicking game has been weak for years as our oline, and running game and penalties. The point im making is because the defense sucked, doesnt mean lavonte david sucks eventhough he too was not perfect. Just because the secondary is not playing well, that does not mean winfield jr is the reason or the problem. That means whatever u want to say about winfield ie too short or slow, he is not the issue because he individually plays well even if cockrell gets beat a lot. So pointing out winfield, evans, white etc short comings is not condusive to whether or not winfield is valuable to the success of the defense. He does not make buisness decisons, he just missed the tackle. The great derrick brooks said while he was a player and he said as during his retirement that defense miss tackles the 1st 4 weeks of the season because their bodies are not used to tackling yet. Thats because in training camp you dont hit a lot and in preseason games you dont play a lot. Winfield is fine. If we are weak 8 and winfield is missing tackles, then we can talk. As of now, you are sounding like an arm chair gm

Lamarcus must write fake “news” stories for mainstream media, because saying Winfield Jr. is “too slow” is a false narrative. He’s the fastest Safety on the Bucs, and faster than 2 of the CB’s (Delaney, 4.46 and Cockrell, 4.56), as far as 40 times.
Winfield Jr., 4.45
Mike Edwards, 4.50
Andrew Adams, 4.54
Whitehead, 4.59
September 23rd, 2021 at 6:15 am
*Faster than 3 of the Corners, Carlton Davis had a 4.53 40 time.

Joe in michigan I think you mean alternative facts stories for the alt right media

All Buc fans here. For my entire life, so I wish no ill will on the team. That being said, I’m a fan of Defense more than offense, and Not a big fan of arena style NFL football.
Unfortunately we’re about to find out just how suspect our SECONDARY is.
Hopefully it’s as you say and they round into form.

webster: A lie is a lie, no matter which side you’re on. If Lamarcus meant to say Winfield Jr. is too slow for the Olympic track team, maybe, but it’s already been proven that he’s not too slow for the NFL.
