Arians Blames Sack-Fumble On Tom Brady
September 21st, 2021Last year, some moronic analysts blasted Bucco Bruce Arians for pointing public fingers of blame at Tom Brady and acted like Arians didn’t know how to coach a superstar quarterback.
NFL fans know how the story ended. It was a terrible take and the Bucs won the Super Bowl.
So it’s no surprise that Arians isn’t hesititating to point a finger at Brady when he screws up this season — especially when it irks Arians for an entire game as it did Sunday.
Brady was sacked three times by the Falcons, and Arians dove deeper on the sacks this evening on WDAE radio.
“One we flat missed the guy, and one other he held the ball too long,” Arians said of Brady.
“You know, the sack-fumble, he just should have got that ball out of his hands. He was getting a little greedy and should have got the ball out of his hand and we got a field goal. And of all the drives in the game, that was the one I was most disappointed in him. Because that was when we got the penalty, we were going in to score and we get the penalty for roughing and then we get the sack/fumble. It should have been 14 nothing. That put me in a bad mood for the rest of the game.”
For those hunting for controversy, notice Arians said that drive was the one that “most disappointed him.”
Like every sane Bucs fans, Joe is not concerned about Brady’s play or his relationship with Arians. They’re just two greats striving for perfection.
As for Donovan Smith, now you know he didn’t get dinged to hard in the film room on Monday.
You can watch the sack that pissed off Arians below.

Arians is right. Brady should line up and block at LT.
September 21st, 2021 at 6:44 pm
HEY BRUCE <—- If we played your No Risk It, No Biscuit offense…..TB12 would be dead & injured by last season. You're lucky Tom changed the offense so the Bucs aren't getting ""GREEDY""" on every play u red-faced BOZO 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
September 21st, 2021 at 6:49 pm
Phooey!
September 21st, 2021 at 6:50 pm
Disagree. No way for Brady to know the protection fell apart in less than 3 seconds.
September 21st, 2021 at 6:54 pm
I’m sure BA asked permission from Brady if he could blame him for that sack-fumble and Brady just shrugged it off and say “No
problem, coach”. That’s a healthy relationship between a coach and The GOAT!
September 21st, 2021 at 6:58 pm
BA us a dip sh#t no way did he hang on too long, what 2.5 seconds too long? All BA’s plays are down field. Reminds me a bit like Biden, loses his mind from time to time. Brady should reply by saying, sit back old man while I make you look good another season. Oh and how many short pass plays does BA call?
September 21st, 2021 at 6:59 pm
That fumble was on Donovan Smith, the film doesn’t lie.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:05 pm
At about “4 Mississippi” Brady stepped up into the pocket to escape pressure coming from the outside; the OTs are supposed to push the EDGE defender to the outside, and at about “4 Mississippi” they are to prevent the EDGE from changing direction and getting the QB from behind.
Is Arians protecting Donovan Smith’s fragile ego, or did he just have too much to drink?
September 21st, 2021 at 7:07 pm
Consonant Boy showing his inner cretin again.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:07 pm
you need to thank God that Brady or a fan doesn’t smack the piss out of you Mr. Magoo. I’ve been watching this game for 60 yrs and he should blame the one that missed the block. OR you can just shut the Hell up and “ON TO CINCINNATI” I guess if the Goat gas a really bad day, Humpty will hire a hit man. Just shut the hell up and do your damn job
September 21st, 2021 at 7:09 pm
The play that most disappointed me was the one where Rojo stepped out of bounds instead of going an extra foot for the first down. Not that anyone cares..lol
September 21st, 2021 at 7:14 pm
Last year Brady showed how much class he has when BA blamed him. Yes we won the SB but it sure in hell wasn’t because of BA’s ego. He should just stay at the brewery and let Tom and BL win games
September 21st, 2021 at 7:15 pm
BA’s negativity will rub off on all our players. I pray that i’m wrong
September 21st, 2021 at 7:18 pm
@Cricket Baker . Yeah that was, puzzling to say the least
September 21st, 2021 at 7:18 pm
This reminds me of that preseason game where Arians blamed Wirfs for a sack, when it looked like Cappa had a brain fart and didn’t beat an orderly retreat like he’s supposed to on a pass protection blocking scheme.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:19 pm
Watching the replay, that looks like Roughing the Passer, he landed with his body weight on the Qb.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:19 pm
I am glad we play a combination of stuff Brady did in New England and stuff that BA wants to do here. Those 1st two receptions that Evans had on the 1st drive would never have happened in NE. Those would have been dump offs in New England. Not sure if BA bringing out the best in Brady but he is bringing out the most fun offense that Brady has every played in.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:20 pm
You idiots don’t know crap. BA is telling you what was wrong. And we have idiots still saying we run brady’s offense. Did you not hear the commentators on sunday even talk about how the bucs had to get brady to scap his dink and dunk mentality and attack. Do you see the throws Brady attempts? Nothing about this offense is anything like he did in New england and he is attacking deep with more confidence. The ball comes out quick because Brady reads the defense quick and not because we are running brady’s dink and dunk new england offense. You dudes are hypocrital nuts. If this happened to the previous qb, you all would be blaming him for holding on to the ball too long and blaming him for the fumble. You know how I know? Because that is exactly what you did. Brady was at fault end of story. He did not say brady needs to be benched. He said brady got greedy on that play. Translation….there was someone open but brady was waiting on a bigger play. It happens. This just in, Brady is not perfect and BA has a right to coach every player on this team. I am sure BA saw the film and he does not need brady’s permission to critique him publicly. I will let the two time coach of the year and 3 time superbowl coach do his job.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:22 pm
I’d tighten up that line, coach. Unless you want your back up playing.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:29 pm
Watching it on Twitter, looked like he got hit right at the 3 sec point … totally blindsided. Donovan should’ve been ashamed of himself on that play; perfect type of play to get your QB injured.
BA’s just being BA though. Not like this is the first time he’s been critical of Brady, or any of our superstars for that matter. Lots of big egos and that’s just his way I think of trying to keep them ‘humble’.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:29 pm
He knows Tom well. Tom is a perfectionist. And when the Rusher gets past him, his clock usually tells him to step forward, and find a guy immediately or throw it away. He would have been hit had it been released a second earlier…but it wouldn’t have been a fumble.
That being said, you can see why Jameis and his “hold the ball 10 seconds” must have driven Arians crazy. And his “throw it up for grabs”.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:33 pm
DR…I think we are talking about the difference of a hit on Brady and a Fumble. Smith did allow the guy to get to Brady. and didn’t do his job well on that play. But I think BA was saying that Tom should have stepped up, and gotten rid of the ball. And if he had, we would have likely still had three points, and the momentum. I think both are true.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:35 pm
Thank god cos Methuselah ain’t god like a lot of yahoos think on here.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:41 pm
@webster
You couldn’t be more wrong. Brady is looking upfield, either for a WR to finish his route or get separation. As others have pointed out, it’s probably between 3 seconds when he gets hammered from behind, from the blind side. Brady might be a fast processor as a QB, but he’s constrained by the time it takes for a receiver to get separation. Now if that sack occurred past 5 seconds, I might agree that Brady should have looked for the check down. But that is not what happened on this play.
Once again, the OTs push the EDGE to the outside. Then they (D. Smith and Wirfs) stay on the inside shoulder of the EDGE, preventing them from coming back at Brady from behind. That’s how you block and form a pocket. The typical time that a pocket should hold is around 5 seconds, 6 seconds is pushing it. That didn’t happen here.
September 21st, 2021 at 7:44 pm
Mark2001 . It’s funny how Brady gets a strip sack fumble and it’s the left tackle fault. But when it happened to Jamies it’s Jamies fault this is why I be telling yall it all depends how you feel about that player if it’s his fault or the blocking. Now to me that wasn’t Brady fault just like it ain’t no quarterback fault for fumbles like that. But when I said that before when Jamies was the quarterback all yall on here was saying I was making a excuse for Jamies. Lol 😆 🤣 😂
September 21st, 2021 at 7:48 pm
Hey Webster, come back and talk after the Bucs get 6 rings
September 21st, 2021 at 7:50 pm
orlbuc… he may be getting old. But quite frankly, with his play, his leadership, and the culture he brings to this team, I wouldn’t trade him for any of the young whippersnappers.
September 21st, 2021 at 8:02 pm
Yeah, Alton, BA is negative. That’s why players love playing for him.
(Facepalm)
You are a certifiable idjut. I suppose you’d prefer Lovie Smith back, or Koetter, or Greg Schiano, or Raheehaw. A big part of BA’s job is managing group psychology, but of course someone with a peabrain wouldn’t be cognizant of that.
September 21st, 2021 at 8:11 pm
orlbucfan…Brady’s a Football God.
September 21st, 2021 at 8:12 pm
Dunkin donut Donnie was certainly to blame there . Why do BA and TB feel they need to spare his feelings ?
September 21st, 2021 at 8:18 pm
BA is just covering for Smith saying Tom held it too long.
C’mon BA – how is 2.8 seconds then blindsided from behind on the QB????
Not one of Donovan’s better moments to be sure. He used to have a lot more of those whiffs but they have curtailed significantly since the middle of last year – so there’s no use being too hard on ol Donnie. It happens. LT is a tough position to play in the NFL and of course the other team’s best edge rusher gets paid a lot too….
September 21st, 2021 at 8:23 pm
In this situation where I’d you just throw the ball away you got a great chance to make a field goal. Yes he held the ball too long. I haven’t seen it in tra slow mo. But when it happens I thought wow that a mistake Jamies would make. Trying for more birds in a bush instead of securing the bird in hand.
September 21st, 2021 at 8:28 pm
Brady told his OL last year 2.3 seconds and he will get rid of it.
September 21st, 2021 at 8:43 pm
Just turn Brady loose on LA
September 21st, 2021 at 8:59 pm
Y’all swear to know more than BA if he said there was time he knows. He’s watched the film he knows the reads. Obviously Brady was waiting on a bigger play coach says he’s at fault I believe him. Also if jameis this if jameis that smh stop comparing this bum to Brady. You can’t even compare winston to other QBs drafted after him because quite a few are better than him.
September 21st, 2021 at 9:26 pm
Come on, Brady did hold it too long but Smith gave up on his block as well. It was not no 2.5 seconds. I was telling him to dump it off but I do like his aggressiveness because he tempers it very well. He is not skittish anymore. They really need to start doing more short passes to Bernard to make defenses more wary of them so they can’t start to cue in on our deeper routes.
September 21st, 2021 at 9:27 pm
Unlike Brady,, Jameis doesn’t make good decisions with the football.
September 21st, 2021 at 9:32 pm
How dare anyone get down on Durable Donnie.
We are blessed to have him.
He’s a top-tier LT and gives 100% effort and plays with a fire and passion that is seldom seen.
He is a warrior.
September 21st, 2021 at 9:34 pm
Oneill,
JayMiss was very capable of fumbling the ball all by himself…..often and hysterically bad fashion.
September 21st, 2021 at 9:55 pm
DBBF99
Agree, short passes to Bernard will allow the offense to expand.
September 21st, 2021 at 10:01 pm
The media is making a lot more out of it than it really was. Sure they had some breakdowns on 1 play out of Thousands since Brady came here. Despite all of the suspicions to the contrary Brady is indeed human.
September 21st, 2021 at 10:06 pm
Bruce said Brady got greedy, so lay off BA. Check out Bradys normal time to throw. Consistantly it is under 3 seconds. Yes D Smith got beat, which is not cool letting someone nail Brady, but again Brady got greedy. As for Jameis during his time with the Bucs, he never consistantly got the ball out quick. He was always looking for longer passes to complete. Which can lead to fumbles and also the Defensive Backs being able to pick off passes, becuase you give them time to make a play on the ball. If Jameis ever learns to get the ball out quick to his recievers, and not play greedy his results will improve greatly.
GO BUCS!!!!!
September 21st, 2021 at 10:07 pm
And once in a while our OL will get beat. They are human too .
I don’t get the hate for BA. At. All. Proof that we shouldn’t allow idjuts to multiply.
September 21st, 2021 at 10:24 pm
Passingthru you are wrong. U are looking at what happened in the backfield. Not once did your explanation take into account what the all 22 says. Thats why BA is saying brady got greedy because im willing to bet the all 22 showed someone was open. Also, on 99% of plays, when the qb last foot drop whether its a 3 step, 5 step, or 7 step drop, the ball should be coming out on the last step. It didnt in this case which again puts the blame on brady. Again brady is not perfect. He himself said after the game he wish he could have plays back. Plays that come to mind is when he tried to hit AB in the endzone and the cb deflected the ball. Greg olsen pointed out that and the replay confirmed that gronk was WIDE OPEN up the seam for an easy walk in td. Brady the goat didnt see it. Im sure he saw it on the surface on the sidelines. Brady also over threw evans deep when he beat two defenders by 3 yards which would have also been an easy td. Nope didnt “hit him in stride”. It happens. There were a couple more but thats football. Great coaches like greg popovich cussed out duncan just like he cussed out the 15th man on the bench. BA will critique brady just like he will critique kj britt and thats what great coaches do
September 21st, 2021 at 10:28 pm
Webster, I gotta roll with you on this one. What’s wild to me is how many people are hanging on for Dear Life to Brady’s jock strap..
I mean seriously. CLEARLY we are blessed to have Brady on the team. HOWEVER, some of you have turned into Straight Up Fan Boys to the point of Clinically In Denial of the”possibly” that Brady doesn’t walk on water every second of the day. Get a grip fellas!!! If it weren’t for the Grand Master Multiple Coach of the Year Award WINNER “BRUCE ARIANS” THERE WOULD BE NO BRADY HERE AT ALL! PERIOD END OF STORY!
Smith blow it, Brady held on to long, and it Pissed Brady’s Boss off because I’m SURE they actually DO discuss such things. He’s pissed because he Doesn’t want Brady to risk it. DUH… Get it? Probably not.
GO BUCS!
September 21st, 2021 at 10:34 pm
Who was BA before Brady? Even Belichick has more ética on not criticizing a player in public
September 21st, 2021 at 10:41 pm
You guys saying who the sack is on is absolutely hilarious. Like, really? You think you know more than Arians? How do you know the play wasn’t designed to get the ball out quick? You don’t, which is why you listen to the coach smh.
September 21st, 2021 at 11:22 pm
I thought watching it Brady held on to it just a tiny bit too long, which we know is the case since he was literally in the process of releasing the ball when he got hit. Brady is a big boy, he knows if he was at fault or not without anyone telling him. Part of the reason the line gave up so few sacks last year was because he got rid of the ball and had a really great sense of timing, and on this one he was a fraction of a second off. I doubt it happens again for a while.
September 21st, 2021 at 11:24 pm
I have noticed Pro Football Focus used this article as well as many other Joebucs fans articles recently. Very cool to see mainstream high-traffic sites pull from the best Bucs Site in the world!
September 22nd, 2021 at 2:39 am
Bruce Arians is an over rated POS and I don’t know why this website has such a hard on for him. The guy is an overrated nothing coach.
September 22nd, 2021 at 7:25 am
SWAMPBUC; good job!! Looks like about 45 out of 49 disagree with your idjotic logic. Been watching for 60 yrs. You gotta learn something unless you’ve been in the Whitehouse for 47 years and still don’t know if a door is open or closed. Tom has a lot of class. JUGHEAD is biting the hand that feeds him. Yes I could see a young player wanting to be corrected but COME ON MAN! Bruce has a couple SB rings from being that sucker fish on the side of a shark. Held the ball too long? He needs to go back and time it. Have you EVER watched Russell Wilson, Aaron Rogers, etc etc?
September 22nd, 2021 at 8:38 am
JonnyBuc:
Yeah, Arians got a Super Bowl win in only his second season with the team. Such a piece of s(p)it! We need Lovie back!
(Hope people have their sarcasm detectors working.)
September 22nd, 2021 at 9:04 am
Alton, you forgot Allen, Rothesburger, Mahomes, Darnell, Garapolo, Carr etc. My guess is BA fell asleep and woke up at the end of the play. Brady has perfected the art of going down to protect himself, obviously he didn’t think he was holding it too long and definitely didn’t think the pressure was coming that fast. Rebut that Swampass.
September 22nd, 2021 at 10:29 am
Brady went through three progressions and never stepped up into the pocket. The sack was 99% on him. That long in the pocket, nearly four seconds, and he’s still on his spot, is on him. He either needs to get rid of it or start moving up or out and off his spot.
September 22nd, 2021 at 10:54 am
Brandon, no way that was 4 seconds, you must be watching the replay video.
September 22nd, 2021 at 6:20 pm
Man who cares about if it’s Brady fault or not who won the game that’s all that matters. I think a lot of yall are Brady fans more than bucs fan. Brady is the only player on this team yall celebrate. I’m glad we won the game and I’m glad the bucs won the superbowl. A lot of yall are more happy that Brady got a ring more than the bucs winning the superbowl. That’s the difference between me and most of yall on here I celebrate the team yall celebrate Brady . Yall can have this site !!!
September 22nd, 2021 at 8:49 pm
Webster,, opinions are not wrong,,/ndog
September 22nd, 2021 at 8:51 pm
So Brady sucks right guys,,SMH
September 22nd, 2021 at 8:58 pm
if it wasn’t for Brady bA wanted to have a ring and if it wasn’t for Brady Belichick wouldn’t be sh*t everyone that’s bitching about the game would you rather have jameous again SMH
September 22nd, 2021 at 9:01 pm
Oneilbucyall is off to go celebrate the Saints but not Winsten. When you think KC you think Mahomes, Baltimore Jackson, Seattle Wilson, GB Roger’s it goes back to Joe Nammoth, Unitas, Bradshaw etc. Oneil have you ever watched a football game? When you think Saints unfortunately all you can think is in the past Bree’s.
September 22nd, 2021 at 10:39 pm
Listnfrmafar. I don’t watch football for the quarterback position like you do. I’m a football fan first than a bucs fan. That’s the difference between Texas and you northern people when it comes to football. The real football fans don’t see the game from a quarterback position that’s for you fantasy football people who don’t know nothing about the game . You see you don’t know nothing because back than it was about the team and not just a quarterback. Now days yall are blinded by the media so that’s why the quarterback position is all you see . You must be one of those fake fantasy football fan !!!
September 23rd, 2021 at 10:07 am
C’mon, Joe Nammoth? It was ALL about him. Ok without Googling it, tell me who Saints offensive guards names are? Or nose guard on D? I thought so, I call BS. Of course we don’t watch football just to see QB but who has the ball the majority of the game. That is unless they play the game differently down south or you’re taking rugby.
