Bucs One Of Three Teams Who Have Reached Out To Richard Sherman

The Bucs have company.
Yesterday, Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians confirmed various Sunday reports that the Bucs had contacted unemployed former All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman to gauge his interest.
Sherman, 33, is sitting on the west coast. And oddly enough the two teams other than the Bucs who also contacted him about potentially returning to the NFL are his two former teams, both of which he helped lead to Super Bowl appearances, Seattle and San Francisco.

It sure sounds like Richard Sherman’s got himself in a much better place now, and my understanding is he’s been working hard in hopes of hooking on with an NFL team and playing this fall. Three have reached out thus far—the Seahawks, 49ers and Buccaneers. The first two, obviously, are very familiar with him. And the third has made a habit over the last year of taking a hard look at almost every accomplished vet that comes available.
Now Joe doesn’t know if a west coast guy like Sherman (he’s from California and went to college at Stanford) would want to play in Florida. And he knows the coaches at Seattle and San Francisco.
The only advantage the Bucs would have is that they probably have a better chance of winning a Super Bowl, though the Seahawks appear to have a damn good team.
And of course, the magnet for ring chasers is on the Bucs roster, Tom Brady.
Basically, it boils down to this: Do the Bucs believe Sherman, who is a very smart player though his skills are eroded (there is a reason why he’s unemployed in September), can play as good or better than Ross Cockrell, who had an awful day on Sunday.

Bucs players are taxed at the state they play there remaining games. The Bucs players will be taxed at FL rates 6 more times this season. It’s a advantage but not what people make it out to be.

Sherman would be a fool not to choose Seattle or San Fran, where their defensive systems can protect him. A corner with eroding skills who will be asked to be put on an island in Todd Bowles defense, is a recipe for disaster.

Just an idea….
The secondary needs at least one world-class athlete to cover Cooper Kupp on Sunday.
The Bucs are very short on such people in their secondary…but they have a lot of such people in their receiving corps….extra, more than they really need…for one Sunday at least. And there’s no injuries in the receiving room right now…so there’s room to do this…
What say the offense gives AB to the defense for a week…fundamentally…the best defense against a number one pass-catcher….should be…could be..another, even better, quicker and more athletic…pass catcher…
I would love to see AB spend next Sunday on defense…doing nothing but spending each play covering Kupp like a blanket and pretending he (he meaning AB) is Stafford’s favorite target…and when the ball comes Kupp’s way….pretending the ball is for HIM (for AB that is)…and catching it! Which AB is VERY GOOD AT…he has amazing hands and quickness and amazing ability to change direction on a dime. Just what a number one cover-guy needs.
If we did that…I bet he would get 1 or 2 interceptions, and also successfully defend 6 or eight other passes that would otherwise get to Kupp …and totally could be a difference-maker in the game….
Not to mention that Tyler Johnson and Scotty Miller could get on the field a lot more as a result…which would not be a problem for the Bucs…they are both very good receivers.
And also….AB is in total “game shape” and already on the team…no need to bring someone new in…that would need to adjust completely to a new team. They don’t need “cap space” to have AB take care of Kupp…he’s already on the team.
I would think AB would love the challenge of such a task…a chance to make a name for himself all over again, in a different way…something that he needs at this stage in his career. If he could prove he could be a difference-maker on both sides of the ball…that he could play both ways….that would extend his career and his value. I think he would jump at the chance…and nail it.
Neon Deion did it, didn’t he? Why not AB? Why not? I think that AB is every bit the athlete that Neon Deion was.
Who wouldn’t feel better about the Bucs chances in the game with the Rams…knowing that AB was tasked with making the Rams number one receiver ineffective…with making Kupp not much more than a magnet helping bring about multiple interceptions by AB? I would love to seem him get the chance. What a scene that would be, eh?-
And springing that on the Rams…surprising them with that….I think it would start the game off shaking their confidence a bit…it would be something they HAD NOT game-planned for. I think it would throw Stafford off….for him to find his first time on the field…that his favorite pass-catching target…Kupp…was going to have one of the greatest pass-catchers the NFL has ever seen…who is STILL in his prime…that he was going to have to get ever pass he tried to throw to Kupp….past AB.
If you were Stafford….would that be a bit of a shock to your system and to your confidence to throw to Kupp? How could it not be?
Joe, you KNOW the right people…to see if this idea could be considered…what a scene that would be, if the Bucs could do this.

Fan of Tom Brady since 2001…and now of the Bucs…and Brady of course. I have never really been a big fan of Belichick….he has always been way too DOUR and grumpy for my taste…the great burden of fans of the Patriots for 21 years…has been Belichick’s press conferences. Pro football is a HUGE BUSINESS….but still, the men who play it…mostly started playing it when they were boys…. because it was FUN…a fun game. Why take all the fun out of it?
One of the funniest failures I have ever, ever seen…of a man utterly misreading a crowd, and trying to get them into his “no fun allowed” mindset…was at one of the Duck Boat Parades in Boston after yet another Brady/Patriot Super Bowl win….and Gronk is bare-chested in the cold, tossing back beers and crushing the cans on his forehead….Tom throwing a football back to the parade crowds….and Bill is on the Duck Boat with them.
It’s a Boston crowd…rowdy, joyous and for sure a lot of them are drunk…and they all have taken the day off of work to celebrate the victory, attend the Parade and party and get drunk

Amazingly, at this moment, Bill Belichick decides that he needs to whip the crowd up into his own mindset…and starts chanting to the Parade crowd…waving his arms at them rythmically, and shouting his mantra at them…. and really trying to get thousands of people to join with him in shouting….”NO DAYS OFF!!! NO DAYS OFF!!…NO DAYS OFF!…and the crowd is like, just NOT INTO IT…they are ON A DAY OFF…and are VERY GLAD TO BE SO!!! Their actually having FUN taking a DAY OFF!! And no one joins him. after about 2 minutes of trying…he gives up. Two minutes of trying to get people to join you in your thing…because you think its normal, even though it isn’t…and failing…is a LONG TIME. I was rolling on the floor laughing! I have never seen anyone make a bigger fool of themselves.

Todd Bowles plays cover 3 on 1st down. Just what Sherman played all those years in Seattle. So the fit here works unless his skills have eroded too much.

I’m not sure how much demand there is for Sherman, versus how much of this is Sherman’s agent talking up the price.
If there is competition, Tampa Bay is clearly favored over SF or Seattle for a championship. Though Seattle is familiar territory, I never thought Sherman sucked up to Pete Carroll. There’s also familiarity with SF and it’s proximity to Stanford, but both SF and Seattle moved on from him earlier. High School-wise he went to Dominguez over in Compton; that’s So. Cal. which is very different from No. Cal. In terms of proximity that shouldn’t give any edge to SF.

You see that at some high schools, particularly when there’s a gifted athlete available. You don’t see that in the pros because unlike HS play the positions are much more demanding. I think it’s easier to move from CB to WR on a limited series of plays as WR is more solitary; you do your own thing in terms of running a route. CB is less solitary, you’re playing more within a team context.

I would rather see an open call of undrafted DBs. We need a couple of fast DBs, and I don’t think Sherman can fit those shoes.
I do think Sherman could do some good as an assistant coach, he is really smart.
