Bruce Arians Glows About Starting Corners

September 20th, 2021

The Richard Sherman watch was on yesterday, but Bucco Bruce Arians wasn’t biting hard on a question about him today.

Arians confirmed general manager Jason Licht talked to Sherman’s camp but said “we’ll kick the tires on some other guys, too. … If it’s the right fit, we’ll move on it.”

Perhaps most important, Arians said cornerback Jamel Dean had a strong game yesterday, a bounce-back from his rough night against Dallas in the season opener. Arians also praised Carlton Davis, who led all corners in snaps and did a lot of good things despite his two personal fouls.

Joe suspects the Bucs are no longer interested in Sherman but want to keep the lines of communication open.

    Cooper Kupp. Next Sunday.

Jmark right on, let see how it goes with a competent offense; seemed like Bowles started dialing up different looks as the game went on…good thing is players did not seem to be out of alignment or where they were supposed to be defensively throughout the game

  3. PassingThru Says:

Well stated. Cooper Kupp is the guy who must be erased on Sunday. The Bucs need to cover him like a cheap suit.

  4. SOEbuc Says:

Lost if you think they’ll sign Sherman. Been media jib-jab the entire time. Trade a good player and maybe a pick for a good CB with some experience (not Darrelle lol)

Arians just confirmed that they’ve been talking to Richard Sherman.

Sherman is pretty much a desperation move. I have no idea what sort of shape he’s in, but age and that Achilles surgery have taken a toll on his ability to provide man coverage.

Put Dee Delany in the game.

It may be true, I don’t know, but after hearing all last offseason that Brady and Gronk were washed up and “desperation moves”, I’d like the Bucs to at least look into this.

why the personal fouls from Davis? facemask–so bonehead it is unreal and the other penalty as bad as Jensen’s mindless penalty. He is not what he thinks–he is barely decent and with the penalties, I hope we move on–no tolerance for his BS penalties.

  9. zzbuc Says:

I guess BA is begging for another CB manily because

    a- lack of depth
b- lack of talent (average at best) And it gets clearer when we aren´t able to rush the passer……

    @Joe in Michigan

I use the eye test. I never thought Brady was close to be finished, there wasn’t any sign of deterioration. Gronk was fine, the only question was how much Gronk could contribute after a year layoff.

Sherman has some decent PFF grades, but they’re misleading. I think he can still function as a zone corner, but playing zone to accommodate Sherman would be a case of the tail wagging the dog.

But all of that is neither here nor there. The Bucs are talking to Sherman and in fact Arians might even be talking up his DBs to help get Sherman to a cheap contract. I hope the front office finds a better option, but I would understand a desperation move in three weeks or so if the secondary gets torched.

The NFL said in a statement that it “investigates any incident involving law enforcement” and if Sherman plays again, he could be in violation of the league’s personal conduct policy.
Re his arrest: Sherman then fought with officers sent to investigate, who used a police dog to apprehend him.
    He’s being investigated for DUI
    Bucs don’t need this.

Howard could definitely argue that Edwards just dug Matty Ice’s grave, at least with the Falcons

  14. Howard Cosell Says:

Ice is still very good but he’s like Rodgers on a subpar team

    Yeah Dean played well…

    Teams are attacking Cockrell

I am pretty sure that Todd Bowles has used his own eye test on Sherman. Since BA just said that he is in consideration, it is because the Bucs think the guy can still play well within Bowles system.

Our base 1st down defense is cover 3 so Sherman certainly fits that profile as it is what he excelled at in Seattle. On obvious 3rd down passing, we do switch to more man.

Whether he is asked to play man coverage 30 to 40 percent of the time or we utilize a little more cover 3 in which he excelled lets wait till and if the Bucs sign him to decide whether he is a valued piece of the team. I mean we are giving up 72 percent pass completions without Sherman. So how much worse can we be with him.
