Off Bruce Arians’ radar?
Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is one of the few starting quarterbacks Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians had in his career that didn’t stick around for a second season.
Of course, after the 2019 season, Jameis shattered Bucs passing records becoming only the eighth human ever to walk the face of the earth to throw for 5,000 yards. Jameis finished that season with 5,109 passing yards, eighth-most in NFL history).
Sunday in Jameis’ first start with the slimy Saints, played just a few hours away in Jacksonville, Jameis lit up the Packers for five touchdowns and no picks.
Despite the Bucs having Sunday off, it didn’t appear that Arians was watching the Packers-Saints game. Asked yesterday about how much he follows the NFC South, Arians all but said he doesn’t.
“Not very much,” Arians said. “It doesn’t mean sh!t. It’s just who we’re playing next week. That’s all that matters.”
So if Arians did watch Jameis and the Saints, Arians sure wasn’t letting on.
It is pretty clear Arians has higher priorities than killing a day watching football on the tube.
Tom Brady, however, told SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio on Monday that he spent all day Sunday watching NFL games. He said he watched mostly as a fan but spent a share of time taking notes on future opponents.

I can’t imagine that our head coach didn’t watch our division opponents at least a little on Sunday. That includes Atlanta of course, the team we play this Sunday. I call bullsh!t.

Why would he care? He plays the Saints twice a year and spends each week prior studying their tape anyway. Last Sunday was a treat because I hate both the Packers and the Saints so it was a win-win. Jameis played a good game but he was reduced to a game manager. It’ll be interesting to see if he can keep up the good play, something he was never able to do consistently through his 6 year NFL career so far.

He ain’t watching sh!t like he said. I guarantee 1 of the 5000 coaches he has was watching. Saints ran the ball 37 times and passed 21 times. That shouldn’t be a winning formula vs our vaunted run defense. Curious to see if they let Jaboo pass it 50 times when we meet up.

Colonel Angus … interesting take. I also doubt Sean Payton will allow Jameis to throw it 50 times, simply because that’s not what Payton’s game plans call for. He’s a MUCH better coach than that; maximizes his team’s talents and does what it takes to win.
Bucs had the #1 run defense in 2019 & 2020, and yet Payton ran very consistently (and effectively) against the Bucs. In the first game against us in 2020, Saints ran the ball 34 times (82 yds) and passed only 31 times (198 yds). Won the TOP, won the TO Battle (3-0), and beat us 34-23 (it wasn’t really THAT close).
In their second game against us in 2020, Saints ran the ball 37 times (138 yds) and passed 35 times (282 yds). Won the TOP handily (40 mins to 20 mins), won the TO Battle (3-2), and embarrassed us 38-3 (31-0 at halftime so they were merciful).
In their first game against us in 2019, Saints ran the ball 31 times (112 yds) and passed 36 times (345 yds). Won the TOP handily, lost the TO Battle (1-0), and squeaked out a 31-24 (it wasn’t really THAT close either).
In their second game against us in 2019, Saints ran the ball 28 times (109 yds) and passed 35 times (228 yds). Won the TOP handily (37 mins to 23 mins), won the TO Battle (4-0), and whopped us 34-17 (20-7 at halftime).
Sean Payton was amazingly consistent in his approach to beating the Bucs FOUR times in these last 2 regular seasons. Ran the ball 130 times (441 yds … 3.4 YPR) and passed it 137 times (1,053 yds … with LOTS of short passing). That’s a run-pass ratio of over 48% … against the #1 run defense. And that, combined with a Turnover Differential advantage of PLUS 7 (3 giveaways vs 10 takeaways) led to a huge TOP advantage. And oh ya, scoring advantage: 137-67 (2-1 ratio). BTW, Payton used 4 different QBs to score those points: Brees, Hill, Bridgewater, and Winston. They’ve got a very BALANCED team on offense AND defense, and we’ll have our hands full trying to take the NFC South crown away from them IMO.

Except Defense Rules, when it matters in the play-offs, he couldn’t get it done. They had 25 rushing attempts for just 104 yards. They passed for just 190 yards, and a big chunk of that was off a trick play that just made us look stupid.
We won the turnover battle 4:0, including 3 interceptions, and we won the time of possession 31 to 28.
As for the two games in 2020, the first match of the season was a new team who didn’t have a proper pre-season trying to get used to each other, so it was always going to be tough. We didn’t really kick in until after the bye week that season. The second game Kamara and Murray were both kept reasonably quiet, their yards per run wasn’t great. What killed us in that game was Taysom Hill with his feet, and the fact we kept giving them short field. Their touchdowns in the first half were 65 yards, 35 yards, 50 yards and 27 yards. The second and third touchdowns came from bad special teams plays and the fourth from an interception.
I’m not saying it will be easy to beat them, but the play-offs showed that we can do it with the right game plan.

Blah blah his decision making was heavily limited in that gm. All gms are different. Dude had 98 yds before that deep shot. He had 85 deep into the 3rd they ran ran ran. The gm played out perfect all gms are not created equal show me a body of work. Consistency is the key always has been always will be.

Defense Rules nothing is set in stone. If the gm dictates you pass more you pass more saints are no different. You’re not running for 200yds every gm.

If Winston has a decent cast around him, Winston has superb games 1/3 of the time. His team usually wins these. He has medicore games 1/3 of the time. They win about half of these. He has terrible games (multipe turnovers) 1/3 of the time. That’s how it’s been.
His best teams will never win more than half or slightly better of their games with him at QB. He did well as game manager last Sunday, and made good plays when he needed to. No question. Had they not had Kamura, and had the Packers not had their own dumpster going on with Rodgers and their relationship, the outcome would have been different–closer or even a loss. Make no mistake, Winston can have all the tools and still blow it. No question there either. He will never be better than 10-7 in his best season. That won’t buy you much these days. A deep run from there can happen, but’s very rare.

I strongly believe that BA has no time to watch. How can you watch 14 games per week while you have to prepare your next game. That is the duty of the scouting and his coaching staff. Then BA just digests a summarized report of novel plays and focus only the next opponent.

Good analysis Defense Rules! How I view the Saints is from an overall TEAM perspective and you are 100%, they are pretty balanced.
Unlike Brees, however, Jameis is much more prone to TOs. It will be up to our defense, when we play, to rattle him early and often.
As much as it pains me to say, Payton is a better coach than BA. So, I wouldn’t write off the Saints.
As to BA watching games, it’s a mistake to look beyond the team you play that week. I would tend to believe him if he says he didn’t watch the game.

The first game of the season doesn’t define how Jameis will do for an entire season. When he’s behind in a game his performances haven’t been good.
As the season progresses we will know if he has matured and learn how to manage not just the game but himself.

Those six paragraphs above almost made my brain explode. You see, us younger Bucs fans live in a world of sound bites and slogans. We believe things we want to believe. Researching their origins are for losers. Who cares where information comes from as long as you agree, right?

All yall keep saying Jamies was game manager but I remember last year when Brady didn’t even have 200 yards passing against the Packers the first time they played . And yet yall was saying how great he played . I hope Jamies ball this year except when he plays us . I really want to him do well this season because of the hate he that comes from yall. And all this talk about Jamies don’t play good from being behind in games is not true. But I remember our defense couldn’t play good when we were leading games or playing from behind. And one more thing I remember when Jamies threw the same picks Brady threw last week wich those kind of picks I never put on a quarterback but yall would always blame Jamies . But for Brady all yall blame Lenny. Lol

I say Payton does the opposite and goes right at the secondary just like Dallas. Harris can fly like Tyree Hill, we do not have a DB that can cover him. I say Payton attacks Bucs like KC did in first game last season. Once Bucs adjust Kamara gets the ball. Do NOT sleep on the Saints.

Their head coach was undefeated with taysom hill and made him look like a competent quarterback even in a game where he threw for 78 yards last year so expected the same from Winston who is much better. 150 yards passing? Yea the head coach protected him just as much as he protected the ball. If he gets into a shootout type game we’ll see how he plays

Mark … I agree with you; “when it mattered in the playoffs, he couldn’t get it done”. Of course, Brees was just a shell of his former self, so that probably limited Payton’s gameplanning. More importantly, did you notice how the Bucs beat them at their own game? We ran the ball 35 times (for 127 yds) and passed it only 33 times (for 189 net yds). OVER a 50% run-pass ratio … hmmm. And oh ya, we won the TO Battle 4-0 AND the TOP 31:31 mins to 28:29 mins.
Although we won that game 30-20, I wouldn’t call it a drubbing since the game was tied at the 10 min to go point, but we prevailed largely thanks to the INT by Devin White (giving our offense the ball at Saints 20 yd line) AND the IN by Mike Edwards (giving us the ball at mid-field). And oh ya, Fournette & RoJo running the ball on those 2 drives (Brady only threw 2 times total on those). Apparently when the Bucs really WANT to run the ball, even against good defenses, they can. Whodathunkit huh?
Youngbucs … I agree; ‘Nothing is set in stone’. But I have a gut feeling that GM Mickey Loomis doesn’t tell HC Sean Payton how to game plan football games, any more than GM Jason Licht tells HC Bruce Arians how to game plan.

DL is one non-casual fan that I pay very close attention to what he has to say.
Payton will NOT put the game on Winston’s decision-making shoulders to win.
Rather than “Mr. Entertainment”, Payton will try to mold Winston into “Mr. Game Manager,” a rather interesting transmogrification…
But, really, I don’t care. Tom Terrific is a mesmerizing player to watch, the perfection and precision. Buc fans are truly blessed and should savor every moment.

“Huge difference in JW in Sean Payton system
1- the ball is out faster. Payton looks first short than long vs the vertical scheme. More emphasis on the screen and short pass routes
2- Wont let JW rollout outside when pocket breaks down trying to improvise. JW was sliding few steps left and right and climbing the pocket up and down when pressured. JW ALWAYS in tampa naturally rolledout outside the tackles parallel to the LOS to try to create windows where there wasnt any to squeese into. Now he is in the pocket and goes straight downfield to run for the first down. no more running horizonal and throwing across his body
3- Payton wont call plays to double coverage. Calloway their top reciever was targeted twice the whole game. Of couse they would roll the double coverage after post snap so Payton uses the reciever as decoy all game and not allow JW to throw that way
4- JW new offense under Payton is EXACTLY the same offense Tom Brady is running now and after the 12th game last year. Both Tom Bady and Jameis WInston knew BA/BL twins Offense systm suks

Tampabus. You probably didn’t but I remember most of the people on here did . The thing that I hate about yall is yall believe that if a former player leaves than you suppose to hate them if they go to another team even if it’s what’s best for their career . Jamies going to the Saints was the best choice for him. His family and his wife family lives in Alabama wich is not far from Louisiana. He was able to get better coaching and a better all round team. Even though none of his starting receivers was playing do to injury but when you have a coach like Payton he will find ways to win . Remember in 2019 the last 3 or 4 games he played without his starting wr and BA was still telling him to keep throwing down feild without running the ball. That’s the difference between Payton and BA . That’s why Payton is a better coach !!

Kobe … Great points right down the line. I also saw a huge difference in JW playing in Sean Payton’s system. I was impressed; he looks like he’s matured as a QB quite a bit.
Not sure what you’re meaning though in saying that JW’s offense with the Saints is EXACTLY the same as Bucs are running with Tom Brady. I still can’t see that. Payton always uses a reasonably balanced run-pass plan. He uses a lot of short stuff also, especially to Kamara (the Saints workhorse who’s great when he gets in space). Bucs are still in the 35% or so run-pass ratio area, far lower than the Saints (which I believe causes us problems in TOP & thus too much time for our defense on the field). We also throw more deep stuff than just about anyone (Brady was on fire deep last game BTW).

Youngbucs … It’s all good, believe me. It’s got nothing to do with ‘being smart’ but much more to do with just loving the game of football & enjoying trying to understand what I’m seeing (kinda like a good game of chess, even when you lose?). I try hard to be more analytical & respectful than emotional or political, but hey, everyone falters once in awhile.
JBF is a free site (to us, not to Joe), and everyone is free to comment as they wish. Some I read, many I just scan a little then move on. Admittedly some I don’t even bother because of their negativity. I particularly like comments that make me think & teach me something (not all that hard to do in actuality). And yes, the ‘back & forth is better’.

Jay-Miss was benched the entire year last year and he *still* leads the NFL in interceptions since 2015. Thankfully where I live I had a better game on than the Saints game. The Saints next game is against the Panthers and historically Jay-Miss has been terrible against them. Since 2015 he’s thrown 9 TDs and 16 INTs against the Panthers. In 2019 against the Panthers he threw for 400 yards but had 1 TD and 5 INTs.
In 21 years Tom Brady has *never* thrown 5 INTs in a game. He’s also never had a losing record as a starter but Unreasonable Joe still has a fetish for the previous QB.

Kobe Faker is correct, Jameis was running a system similar to the one you see in Tampa Bay, or more accurately, same as the system that Brees ran up until his arm turned to overcooked pasta. Brees had trouble delivering a ball 15 yards beyond LOS which made him somewhat easier to game. But then Brees is the superior technician at finding and exploiting vulnerabilities within those 15 yards. To be fair, very few QBs ever get to Brees’ level of accuracy and decision-making.

Hell, I’ll go one more step to put Jameis’ development in perspective:
Had Mahomes been better developed at the short-to-intermediate horizontal passing game, the Bucs would have had a much harder time during the Super Bowl. Mahomes is that perfect fit for “no risk it, no biscuit” due to his great gun slinging and long ball. But those long routes take time to develop, don’t they? Once you contained Kelce, there was no horizontal game, despite having Sammy Watkins or even Hardman. That’s something all the Mahomes excuse-makers overlook.

bruce was turning a dark beet red while trying to fix jameis and if he didn’t get him out of tampa it was bad for his health…

Kobe … It’ll be interesting to see in this next Saints-Bucs game how the two teams game plan each other. Personally I think the Bucs will run the ball more than we usually do, say 45% run-pass ratio. Also probably use more short stuff, and yes, to the RBs. All fo that will probably be used to set up the deep pass, which BA simply can’t resist (but he’ll be more patient about setting it up like he was in the Super Bowl).
So perhaps the two teams will have similar game plans in this next meeting. Tend to think that the defensive matchups & performance, as well as turnovers, will be the difference in the game.

Saints defense is the only respectable thing about them..
I doubt they will be challenging the Bucs for the title this season…
Yes, they will get some wins relying heavily on running the ball and defense BUT once they get behind early (and they will) they will be forced into a passing game that will inevitably be their down fall…. Nothing Special!

Well, Unlike BA who was busy I did watch JW and the Saints before checking out JBF site… had to with 5 TDs to 0 INTs reported for our ex. I wanted him gone but agree with others that landing in NO was good for him (and us). What I saw:
Very nice scrambling… 4 runs resulting in 4 first downs and they were nimble, purposeful runs to move the chains not the OMG running for your life or heroic bouncing off hits stuff we used to see in TB. Great job and not something Tom is likely to do anytime soon (please).
And a little stat sheet inflation… One of those TDs was a shovel pass inside the 5… looked more like a handoff at first and he did throw a red zone INT but the ref saw an imaginary roughing the passer to take it off the stat sheet and allow JW to convert into another short yardage TD. One of those TDs was an incredible catch of a wide left pitch to a wide open TE in broken coverage… you have to be ready to lunge in any direction when Bad Jameis drops back.
but, but, but, the last TD was vintage Good Jameis and he was under control for the whole game… no frantic heaves like we saw both Brady (somehow a catch, thank you Lenny) and Rodgers (a total surrender INT before getting benched) do in week 1.
Bottom line: JW is still finding his better self with some signs of real progress and some familiar signs of his pre-LASIK inaccuracy and favorable stats on the sheet. Most importantly, a big win and now 16 more games to go…
BTW, when Bowles and BA see this film they will likely gloss over the refreshingly steady QB play and focus on an elite RB and OL with a much more talented than advertised WR/TE group. JW and NO are no joke. Lets go Bucs!

Young Bucs as irritating as Oneillbucs is, like that ex that just won’t leave you alone he’s not lying. When I was a Jameis fan I went to war with a lot of people some who made it personal in their attacks on him. No matter how good he did to some it wasn’t good enough. These people only harped on the negatives never speaking about his positive. I honestly believe BA hung him out to dry once he gave up on him, however Jameis proved no matter how many weapons he had around him we would never go anywhere with him. So it was time for him to pack.

DavidBigbuc. I don’t think that’s what it is bro it’s not that important to me . At the end of day every player in the NFL is trying to make as much money as they can in the league. So that’s why I wish Jamies nothing but the best until he plays us. I will always be a bucs fan regardless who playing quarterback. I just don’t look at 1 position and determine that’s why we lost a game. Yall should be tired of drafting quarterbacks every 5 years. Look at Travor Lawrence he went to Jacksonville and so far he’s looking nothing like he did in college. But I’m not going to say he’s been trash so far . It’s all about what team they get drafted by and the coach . That’s what matters most because they don’t forget how to play football when they come to the NFL.

BA is right. He has to be focused on who his teams next opponent will be. If he has time he will watch. But there will be plenty of time to watch Saints film, when the match-up gets closer.
