Team Glazer Didn’t Want Holmes, Marshall

Taking a respite from crossing swords with Ian Beckles, St. Petersburg Times Bucs beat writer Stephen Holder explains/preaches the reason why Bucs general manager Mark Dominik didn’t upgrade the wide receiver position by making the ridiculously low-risk/high-reward move of sending a normally joke of a fifth round pick to Pittsburgh for talented Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes, or outbid Tuna Parcells for gifted yet unreliable malcontent Brandon Marshall, is that Team Glazer didn’t want them.
It wasn’t because Team Glazer specifically had an issue with the problems each player has (Holmes: bongs; Marshall: gunfights/insubordination) but that upgrading the abysmal wide receiver corps from sources other than the draft is not part of the “plan.”
There were several reasons we’ve told you all along that this wasn’t something we envisioned the Bucs doing. But one of the primary reasons, I think, is the message that co-chairman Joel Glazer and his brothers delivered to Mark Dominik and Raheem Morris.
In an interview with the Times last month, Joel Glazer said the following:
“We’ve had long talks about this. And really, the general message is: You think long-term, we think long-term. It’s plain and simple. You start thinking short-term, we start thinking short term.
“Everyone buys into this plan. I always ask, “Does everyone have the stomach for this because there’s a lot you’ve got to endure early on.”
In short, Holder notes that Dominik and Raheem the Dream covet their jobs. So they don’t dare stray from the direct orders of Team Glazer. In other words, believing Holmes or Marshall would wear a Bucs uniform is slightly more unrealistic than Joe finding Rachel Watson in his bedroom this afternoon wearing a skimpy Bucs cheerleader outfit.
As a result, Holder cautions Bucs fans, that unless a wide receiver is obtained in the draft, or some guy walking the streets comes knocking on Dominik’s door looking for work, the current lot of wide receivers the Bucs have on the roster is what the Bucs are stuck with.

I understand the build through the draft philosophy. However, you’re not talking an old aged veteran, you’re talking about a 26 yr old, talented WR.
Oh well, all that’s left is the draft and the scraps left over after player cuts.
We have to nail this draft harder than Joe would (insert name here).

Marshall does improve your team for the long-run. He is only 26 .
Acting like the only way you can build for the long run is with rookies is a bullshit excuse to do nothing !

Sorry… but this is utter bullshit. Explain to me how trading for Marshall would have been all that different than trading for Winslow last year? or “attempting” to sign Haynesworth?… of unfortunately, acquiring Leftwich? Was last years plan different than this years plan or was there no plan for last year? The truth is… the real difference between this year and last year… is there is no salary floor… So, the Glazers are not compelled to spend any money they don’t have to.

Maybe instead of discussing a new stadium for the Rays, Pinellas and Hillsborough ought to talk about using their eminent domain powers to buy the Bucs from the Glazers. They could probably get a good buy on the team being that the Glazers have are sufficiently running its value into the ground every day.

Totally agree with everyone here this is total BS. It is not giving up 2 players (via the picks) for one in Marshall and being short changed. It is handing over two unscratched lottery tickets for a case of beer. I can only assume that the Bucs didn’t want to pony up the big contract Marshall wanted because NOTHING else makes sense! Not that they even went there with this one but I just gotta say you never heard anything about Marshall being a problem when Shannahan was coaching so maybe, just maybe it has a lot more to do with little big man McDaniels than Marshall. Bucs really missed the boat on this one, way worse than missing on Holmes.

I’m not an attorney, and I’m sure it was a joke, but I don’t think eminent domain can be used to take companies/franchises, just real estate. 🙂

Poor Josh Freeman. Without any credible receivers, defenses are going to blitz him unmercifully. It’s going to get REALLY ugly. I guess we can write off 2010.
Anyone want to start talking about 2011? Any good QB’s in next year’s draft? We’re probably going to need one after Freeman gets broken in half this season.

That is just total garbage. Holmes and Marshall are just 26. I could understand a little about Boldin since he is a few years older. Adam S. reported that the Bucs were indeed interested in Marshall, so I guess he could have been part of the stupid plan.
The Bucs have a higher 2nd this year than Mia. and more than likely a higher 2nd in 2011. The Bucs could have easily had Marshall if they wanted him. Maybe the Bucs were looking for a bargain and the Broncos told them to take a hike. Or the Glazers stepped in and said no. A proven receiver compared to a rookie is an easy choice for me. Yes it would cost a fortune to pay Marshall, but if money is not an object this shouldn’t have been a problem. God knows that the Glazers have saved many millions over the last few years with this team. My brother is a bigger Bucs fan than me. He lives out of town and he said that he may not get NFL Ticket this year because he figures what is the point. I don’t blame him.

I am going to renew my tickets for the express purpose of booing this poor excuse for a team. I hope the broadcast microphone can pick up all the abuse I intend to heap on this garbage pile.

HUGE pet peeve of mine showed up in your post, Joe. Had to point it out.
You cannot covet something that you already have. To covet is to desire something that belongs to someone else. Therefore, it is impossible (given that you are using the word correctly) for Dominik and Morris to ‘covet their jobs,’ as you say.
