Rewarding The Rookie

September 10th, 2021

Joe Tryon-Shoyinka

First-round pick Joe Tryon-Shoyinka got the start last night.

Coincidence? Joe doesn’t think so.

Tryon-Shoyinka entered the game lined up covering Cowboys receiver Amari Cooper in the slot as Dallas was backed up to its 2 yard line by a gorgeous Bradley Pinion punt.

The rookie showed his hand that he was blitzing early, reset himself and then got a late jump after Dak Prescott.

Predictably, the pass went right to Cooper screaming down the seam and Antoine Winfield, Jr. was a little late picking up Cooper in zone coverage. Big gain for Dallas.

Tryon-Shoyinka went to the bench and re-appeared several downs later on that drive on 3rd-and-15. He dropped in coverage while Vita Vea rushed off the edge and the Bucs got off the field.

Joe believes Bucs coaches made a concerted effort to get Tryon-Shoyinka in early to shake off his rookie nerves. Maybe they didn’t plan to start him, but perhaps they did. Joe thinks the latter is true, an effort to reward the rookie for a strong training camp and great effort and attitude.

Remember what Arians said about Tryon-Shoyinka on Wednesday night.

Listening to Gene Deckerhoff try to say “Shoyinka” was hilarious & sad. Never got it right once the entire night. Time to put Gene out to pasture.

  2. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Shoyinka Shoyinka Shaba Rankin! Actually it’s Boyika Boyika but I’m sure most of you don’t know what song that is from. I thought JTS played pretty well. Saw some adjustments he made sometimes mid play and liked some of the stunts he played. Did not look overwhelmed out there. Was real close to a sack 1 or 2 times.

  3. Dewey Selmon Says:

I agree Pete. I get roasted for it. Thankfully Dave Moore is there to tell the people what really happened. CAUGHT. NO DROPPED. GODWIN, NO EVANS. It’s hard to listen to sometimes.

  4. Swampbuc Says:

All everyone is talking about is Dak Prescott. We’ll soon find out if it was Lovie Smith’s I mean Todd Bowles soft off coverage scheme or if Dak is actually elite.

Stop denigrating our opponents. It’s the NFL. This Bucs team could even find a way to let the Texans stay close.

  5. geno711 Says:

I have seen nothing on this site about SMB yet. You might want to re-look at that.–Joe

Profootball Doc immediately said that it appeared to be a dislocated elbow and if not fractured (which was his best guess), he would miss games and not be out for the year. It seems like BA confirmed that when last night he said that SMB will be ok.

Guess is that he will be out 48 games.

  6. geno711 Says:

    4 to 8 games. Not 48.

    @Dewey Selmon

I’m an FSU fan & can’t take Gene anymore. He doesn’t make mistakes on EVERY play when he’s calling FSU games so he’s not taking his job seriously during Bucs games.

On another note, Shannon Sharpe just said that he had a dislocated elbow (like Murphy-Bunting may have) and missed 4 weeks. I’ll take that b/c it looked worse

  8. Lamarcus Says:

Defense is still trash and without Ab and Gronk and Brady this team is same ol Bucs without JW

  9. adam from ny Says:

when he’s out there you really see him clearly – he doesn’t blend in like nelson…

he stands out on the field and moves at a different speed…

towards the end of the 4th he had that vital off sides call – not good, but what can you do, he is a rook

  10. Swampbuc Says:

Without a pair, my uncle is my aunt.

  11. Marine Buc Says:

    @ lamearcus

You can say that about every team in the NFL… Let’s try it with the Cowboys shall we?

The Cowboys defense is trash and without Dak, Cooper and Elliott they suck…

    LOL!!!

  12. Stanglassman Says:

Adam- He did get called for that but the Dallas OLine was getting away with all kinds of illegal procedures on that drive. It was causing the DL to get a slow start and jump off sides. Hackuley jr is just as bad as his father. Officiating was awful last night.

  13. Robert Says:

he didn’t do a whole lot.

  14. adam from ny Says:

    omg stan –

please don’t even mention daddy ed hochuli…lol…

that guy was like buccaneer cryptonite

    🙂

  15. Ash Says:

To see our pass rushers drop into coverage so often is just wild to me and those blitzes while running soft coverage giving all the underneath stuff was pretty nuts

  16. Michael Says:

Gene can stay as long as he wants, I’m getting older too, so he sounds about right to me 😂🏈

  17. Hodad Says:

Tryon, and the rest of his D line mates played a horrible game. Dak dropped back 58 times!, and we only sacked him once, with four pressures. They were missing their pro bowl guard, didn’t matter. Even D. White couldn’t get home on several blitz attempts. Unfortunately our defense did pick up where it let off, at the beginning of last season. That is giving up big plays, and crazy passing numbers from QB’s. Where are all the ball hawks I kept hearing about in training camp? We picked off one tipped ball out of 58, the rest of the night we couldn’t hang with their receivers. Whole D needs to thank TB12 for bailing them out. It’s time to step up guys.

  18. Bucamania Says:

That offsides call was on Suh not JTS. They got the number wrong. He had some nice pressures and caught Dak from behind. He’s just getting started.

  19. SB~LV Says:

He is going to be a very special player!

  20. TOM Says:

Leave Gene alone. He’s been around a long time. He deserves to be where he’s at. A real pro thru the years.

  21. mark2001 Says:

Swamp… I wouldn’t even joke about Bowles being compared to Smith. This game was prepped by Dallas for months…they made a strategic decision to mostly pass to the edge with a blocker, to face our DB’s, and mix in a few runs. And that quick passing game made our pass rush relatively ineffective. It was a good strategy on Dallas’s part. Give them credit. I’m sure Todd will go back to the lab and devise a D strategy to offset it. And if he doesn’t, then you can legitimately start making some Smith references. But it was one game. And Coach has 10 days to develop a plan against that style of offense.

  22. Rod Munch Says:

    People hating on Gene?

What a bunch of pieces of garbage. Go back up north you yankee slobs.

    God bless.

  23. FrankPillow Says:

Too bad Todd had his OLBs, including #9 spending a disproportionate amount of time in the 1st half dropping into zone coverages.

  24. HeyItsAdam Says:

My wife was trying to ready the name after the hyphen on Tryon’s jersey.

I almost had her believing it was “Sumjeans.”

  25. Winny Testaverde Says:

Put me down for a Mean Gene stays vote…his excitement makes the highlights that much better. He wasn’t young in 2002…less young now but him and Dave “Less Is” Moore are a good duo.

  26. BucsFanSeffner Says:

Gene is a Tampa Bay treasure and I hope he continues for at least a few more years. Nobody gets as excited as he does and that’s fun to listen to.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Yeah, there’s no vote on Gene. Anyone who wants him to go, do this for me, drive to the top of the Skyway Bridge, stop your car, leap over the edge.

    Problem solved.

    God bless.

  28. adam from ny Says:

gene is the man behind the mike…

    he’s a buc for life…

    who the hell are you?

    #GeneFugginStays

  29. Wild Bill Says:

Joe you really believe Tryon is ready to start? Who do you sit? Guys that led the bucks defense all the way to the super bowl? Tryon will get serious playing time only when the Bucs are up big against a weak opponent. He may earn more playing time by mid-season. Saw nothing last night that earned a starting role. Actually there weren’t any big splash plays by any Buck pass rushers. Dak had a clean jersey last night. We got close quite often but no cigar.

  30. BuccoDav Says:

Just call him Sho-Nuff!, or Joe…

  31. You gotta be crazy Says:

I swear some of you don’t understand what you’re watching. Same as the SB….. Nothing over the top it’s just Dak took the shirt passes as Machines didn’t n couldn’t

  32. Eddie Marz Says:

He’s a fine player and is only going to get better. Glad he’s on out team. GO BUCS!

  33. orlbucfan Says:

When I saw the spread on this game, I thought—no way. Vegas blew it. I also listened to the refs who predictably sucked. They forget the Cowturds don’t know holding, etc.? However, Bucs stunk. The special team was a nice surprise though.
