Manbeast Ndamukong Suh Vs. Gerald McCoy
April 14th, 2010Since the 2009 season ended, it seems just about everyone — from Joe, Ian Beckles, Steve White, Justin Pawlowski, Dan Lucas, Anwar Richardson and Gary Shelton to the mailman and the local bartender — has been asked, “Who’s better, Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy?”
That’s pretty much like asking, “Which do you prefer, brunette or blonde?”
Doug Farrar of Yahoo! Sports did something unique: He put together about the best detailed pro/con article comparing the two Big XII defensive tackles.
With as many as nine defensive tackles projected to be taken by the end of the second round, the 2010 draft class may be the deepest we’ve ever seen at the position. That said, there’s no doubt whatsoever who’s on top of that list – the same two who have been competing for the No. 1 spot on their position lists all last season, and perhaps the first pick in the draft. Ndamukong Suhwas good enough in 2009 to win most possible defensive awards (and probably a few that haven’t been invented yet) and make a legitimate run at the Heisman Trophy, based on his historic performance in the Big 12 championship game. Gerald McCoy trumps Suh on the cards of some experts because his first step is so quick, and he’s able to penetrate front lines so well.
Both players stand to make immediate impact on their future teams, but does one of them stand apart?
Joe was impressed with the research and how Farrar displayed his information.
So who would Joe take? Joe is ever so slightly leaning Suh but will sleep soundly if the Bucs acquire McCoy.

Those who think McCoy should be taken first are a joke.
BUT those who think McCoy is not a top 3 pick should compare him to ANY DT coming out the past decade.
Either one and the Bucs get a slam dunk.

If Suh is gone,we need to trade back a few spots and pick up another pick.
Since we’re putting all our eggs in this draft, another 2nd would be nice
and we could still pick up an impact player.Plus this would fit into the
Glazers tight ass payroll.

“slam dunk”
Ok, now I am really worried. Can anyone say Tony Mandarich?
How many “slam dunks” have the lions had the last few years, now washing cars?

It doesnt have anything to do with 40 times, speed off the ball, or any of that other crap. (See Kyle Vanden-Bosch)It’s all about want-to. Which guy is the overachiever? Which guy will spend time studying film of his opponents? Which guy will work relentlessly on his pass rush moves?
Give me the overachiever every time. If that guy happens to be 5th or 8th on Mel Kiper’s list, so be it! You gotta work to be good. You gotta bust serious butt to be great. Which guy is motivated and which guy is chasing the cash?

Whoever they pick will get plenty of opportunity to play as the the Bucs offense is going to have A LOT of 3 and outs with these receivers.

If you think Suh doesn’t have a quick 1st step , then watch the Sports Science video Joe posted.
His 1st step timed faster than the RB’s Sports Science tested.

McCoy and I’m no joke Dave. Either one is fantastic to me. Suh is as strong as 2 bulls, but his strength will be leveled out some at the pro level. McCoy is lightning quick off the ball and you can’t teach speed. I’ll take speed (and subsequent good attack angle leverage) over strength.
What none of us know about these 2, or any pick, is the desire and expectation to be great.
I’ll take either one – let’s hope they prove their worth.
