In a COVID season (just ask the Broncos) the importance of your team’s No. 3 quarterback takes on new meaning.
In Tampa, the No. 3 QB is rookie Kyle Trask.
Will he even play if needed? The Bucs could always pull veteran Ryan Griffin off their practice squad or yank Drew Stanton out of thin air like they did last December.
The answer isn’t important. What is critical, however, is that Trask will be following the lead of Tom Brady all season, and he will learn a ton from 11th-year veteran backup Blaine Gabbert, in addition to the QB incubator that is Bucco Bruce Arians, Byron Leftwich, Tom Moore and Clyde Christensen.
In the world of QB development, Trask hit Powerball in Tampa.
“Use this year to learn from the best,” Arians said of Trask on the latest edition of In The Current at Buccaneers.com.
On the production, Arians emphasized that Trask is under no pressure to play, but Joe disagrees a little. If you’re the No. 3 in this climate, so you better be feeling the pressure — and be ready every week.
Joe is excited for Trask, though Joe doesn’t want to see the guy on a football field until April minicamp.

I would say it would be nice to see Trask sometime this year, if it is because Brady already ended the game in the first half, like he did against the lions last season.

Most all of Buc World is dying to see Trask take a few snaps with the first team offense.
Most all of Buc World knows pigs flying from TIA is far more likely.

We would have to have a big enough lead, as well as early enough, for gabbert to get in and then Trask. There is no way Arians would deviate from that hierarchy. I’m not against it, but I don’t see it.

I suspect Tom doesn’t want to exit a game no matter what the circumstances…..but if he does, it’s time for Gabbert………Perhaps Trask can elevate to #2 next year and get some live snaps.
I realize there are many down on Trask……but like any Buc, TBBF chooses to give him a chance…..
I’m not sure the motivation for the negativity….seems to me Trask has some talent….and should be worthy of his nearly 3rd round pick.

I could see him maybe in some forth quarter mop up duty. But I doubt we see him at all, in any game, this year.

Joe, aside from some development obviously (primarily while handing off), what would be the incentive to skip over your number two quarterback and go straight to the number three guy? Doesn’t make sense. Now if they elevate Trask to primary backup that’s another story, but I don’t think anyone thinks that will happen. And some 4th quarter mop up reps in a game that’s essentially over? Where we can assume he’s handing off? Don’t see the merit in it.

Trask is surrounded by so much experience and knowledgeable people that he should have every chance to develop well and have great success for many years…
It will be such a tragedy if he doesn’t become a winner in this league!

Is there still a 3rd QB rule? It used to be that the inactive 3rd QB could only enter the game if the first 2 QBs are injured during the game. Don’t know what the rule is now.

-Promote Trask to #2.
-Give him more practice reps.
-Let him play clean up in the 4th.

Trask is under no pressure. If he was to play, it would be because tragedy hit the team, Brady and Gabbert would have to go down, and even then I think they’d put Griffin out there before Trask, in part because if all that stuff happened above, the Bucs would be playing for the #1 draft pick.

Trask is smart and he’ll absorb all that’s possible and we all want Brady to stay healthy and hopefully Trask will be able to fill great shoes one day in the next couple of years.

I heard Booger talking about Fields and the Chicago situation on TV. He said basically you don’t want to rush the young QB’s, into a starting roll until they have the tools to be successful. I would surmise he thinks that based upon looking at all the young QB’s that have been pounded into failure over the years, that he has a strong point. I would rather see Trasks be given as many tools as possible to succeed…fix his mechanics and footwork…teach him the system inside out… give him techniques that will help him succeed.. tricks of the trade, if you wish. I think that would be a wise choice in Trasks case especially as he isn’t particularly athletically gifted, and wise play and quick processing must be his forte.
