Jason Pierre-Paul Gets A Chase Young Lesson
September 1st, 2021Who could forget the amazing story of Jason Pierre-Paul checking into the Super Bowl for a snap without permission from coaches?
What an iconic moment.
Buccaneers outside linebackers coach Larry Foote went a litter deeper on the fun and challenge of coaching JPP and Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett on Booth Review at Buccaneers.com.
Foote explained that he’s learned that Shaq and JPP are sort of moody and unpredictable. He says they’re fierce competitors with strong opinions about practice time and what they want to do on the field. Foote respects their hunger and passion for everything but acknowledges they need a little special management.
“You gotta learn how to reverse psychology those guys a little bit,” he said.
He gave an example of getting JPP more accustomed to and accepting of rotating snaps.
“He had more reps than Chase Young [last year]. So I had to literally get those stats and say, ‘Look, these guys are 10 years younger than you and you got more reps than you, more snaps,” Foote said of JPP’s output.
Keep in mind JPP had a bad knee that required offseason surgery.
Enter Bucs rookie edge rush talent Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. JPP already had praised publicly how advanced the rookie is versus where JPP was out of college.
JPP is eager to coach up his potential replacement, but this year JPP wants and expects to be an All-Pro. Foote might have to double as quite a counselor to keep everyone happy.

Love it! The competitiveness, the drive, never wanted to take time off etc.

Jerry might want to keep Dak on ice a little longer. These guys are hungry.

more plays that gets all three guys on the field at the same time

JPP is a DOG.
We have some fierce competitors, and elite talents, indeed.
We’ll have a strong rotation for sure.

JPP is a true Buccaneer.
Ring of honor worthy.

The depth we have across the board now is unbelievable.

The counseling should be simple and direct: quality over quantity of reps

JPP has been such a great Buc. I was worried he didn’t want to be here but the trade only seemed to fuel his fire and this franchise has been on the right path every since. If JTS take some snaps from him he better produce, or JPP will drop the big brother act quickly.

I’ve been a fan since 1995 and JPP may be my favorite Buc all time.
Blew his fingers off. Pro Bowl. Broke his neck is a Ferrari accident. Pro Bowl.
He changed the culture before TB12 got to town. He gave the defense moxy.
Always amped. Always ride or die. Always delivers.

I don’t know JPP personally but I’m just here to tell you that as a USF Bulls fan I’ve seen the drive and determination long ago and I know one thing that I am sure everyone on this site knows. Whenever he laces up the cleats he’s gonna leave everything out on the field and ball. #Facts

Remember when he was a great player at USF… and was very disappointed we didn’t get him in the draft. But he returns here and plays with guts and heart on a daily basis. What a role model for JTS.

Mark2001 … From what I remember of the 2010 draft, it was always gonna be between Suh or McCoy since we were picking #3 that year (would’ve loved to have gotten Suh but I doubt we could’ve kept him past year 5).
That particular draft was awesome in many ways. For instance, Front went in the 2nd Rnd. Antonio Brown didn’t get drafted until the 6th Rnd. Tons of other great players were drafted in later rounds also, like Jimmy Graham in the 3rd Rnd, and Everson Griffin & Gene Atkins in the 4th Rnd. Overall though, Bucs didn’t do so well that year run the draft.

Champions want to be on the field for every snap.

Yeah D… Megatron went just before us…Joe Thomas…Seems like we were always a day late and draft position short during many years.

And of course, Suh before McCoy. McCoy was a great guy. But Suh… a game changer written all over him.

I was also disappointed we did not initially draft JPP at the time. We could have used him during all of those years since.
Oh well, that was a different regime, just one during the losing years.

his replacement was drafted but it’s not about that, we need you fresh down the home stretch and into the playoffs. Hopefully a super bowl means more than stats

No woulda coulda shoulda. If we had suh or jpp out of the gates we would have lost them to FA the way they came to us. Everything that happened has happened as it is and should be. And we are the champs with a loaded roster.
