BSPN: Bucs Not “Quite” On Chiefs’ Level

August 13th, 2021

Short memories.

This sort of gnaws at Joe.

OK, Joe knows Seth Walder is a stathead. He’s one of these guys that only regurgitates what numbers and models and projections are spit out at him.

In other words, Walder is a very expensive serving tray.

Walder’s numbers suggest the Chiefs are the team to beat for the Super Bowl in Los Angeles in February.

The Bucs, despite not being quite on Kansas City’s level, remain the favorite in the NFC and are the only other team to cross double digits in terms of chances to win the Super Bowl. Their strategy to run it back with nearly the same squad looks (on paper) like it could pay off; the Bucs have an 85% chance to reach the playoffs and a 15% shot to repeat as champions, according to FPI.

That first sentence bothers Joe. The Bucs “not being quite on Kansas City’s level… ” This is where a human being needs to step in and type, “Well, except for the fact… “

Joe understands computer programs are GIGO. Garbage in; garbage out. So how can Walder write with good conscience that the Bucs are not on the same level as the Chiefs when the last time the two teams squared off, the Bucs beat the snot out of them? Hello!

It sort of gets worse for Joe. Walder notes this same computer program believes the Bucs will have a better defense than last year.

So let Joe get this straight: The Bucs kept Pat Mahomes and the high-flying Chiefs out of the end zone and allowed just three field goals in the Super Bowl, and the Bucs defense will be better but the Bucs still aren’t “quite” on the same level as the Chiefs?

Time to reboot your computer, dude. It’s corrupted.

Was a modicum of critical thinking not allowed when Walder typed this story?

Well, he’s not wrong. We’re not at their level. We’re currently a level above. Until further notice.

  2. Peacesign Says:

    Keep calling them out Joe!

  3. Buczilla Says:

Geez, is this guy running his numbers on a Vic-20? What a doorknob.

  4. Miller5252 Says:

Anyone can make anything look a certain way. The best thing about it, you can’t measure a persons, or teams, moxie. It’s what makes sports truly great! We’ve seen so many times over the years that a certain team is supposed to win and doesn’t. Ask Brady about his perfect season…. The Bucs beating the Saints, Green Bay and the Chiefs…. Let em talk. Keeps giving Brady and the Bucs bulletin board material!

  5. Jerry Says:

The media loves Mahomes. We saw the narrative the media formed in the Super Bowl with how they wanted the GOAT torch officially passed on from Brady to Mahomes.

And believe it or not, it’s the opinion of some analysts that the only reason the Chiefs lost that game was because of injuries on the OL and some flags not going their way.

KC might not even make it out of the AFC this year. There are a number of pretty decent teams in that conference that could have a break out year.

  6. Jerry R Jones Says:

    High as he!!.

  7. mick Says:

let them doubt. more fuel for the players and less complacency.

  8. Drunkinybor Says:

I read that and thought the same thing. Almost all the 4 letter *experts” have the super bowl losing Chiefs at number 1 in the rankings and the Bucs number 2. It’s honestly strange to me. I guess they figure the Chiefs just had a bad day in the superbowl? I don’t know how that’s possible with weeks to prepare. Also have you ever heard so much whining from a losing sb team. Machines I looked at the tape I shouldn’t have left the pocket so fast . It was my fault. Oh our online was demolished. The refs helped them. So and so was holding. Brady said a meany thing to me. Kelce was getting mugged. Hill was getting hit after 5 yatds. Wah Wah Wah.

  9. sgrd0q Says:

This will be a minority opinion, but I will say I do not have a problem with Walker’s statement. The Chiefs have been consistently good for a while now; the Bucs have been consistently good at the tail end of last season. One game does not decided it as “on any given Sunday…” logic holds.

Now if the Bucs continue this season where they left off (and there is no reason to believe they won’t) then the Bucs being number one may be justified.

  10. Medicated Pete Says:

2000 Rams had the best offense we’ve ever seen & only got 1 Superbowl. More teams are equipped to knock-off the Chiefs this season than they are to beat the Bucs. Our defense is way better than K.C.

  11. DaBux Says:

Keep feeding #12’s fire. Love it.

  12. bucschamps Says:

i have this strange feeling that bucs winning superbowl was just a glimpse of the future. im going to savor every second of this upcoming season.

  13. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

The marketing department told him Pat Mahomes sells better so he went with that.

  14. Mike C Says:

I hope Brady looks at that article!

  15. ModHairKen Says:

Mahomes has had a couple of good years. But he got hurt and his wheels slowed down. Hill was exposed in the SB. He can be covered. The Chiefs OL is marginally better than the SB. The KC Defense is good but not great.

The rest of the AFC got better.

    Dogfight.

  16. SB~LV Says:

Never will have the element of Mahomes playmaking

  17. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

    Good…let us be the underdog!

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Stats & spreadsheets don’t measure spirit, brotherhood, morale, hunger, leadership and other human factors.
I think the Bucs edge KC out on the intangibles….

  19. Bird Says:

Get that blown up and put on poster board size and frame it

Put it in the locker room for all to see
Should put it over JPPs or Devin White’s locker and all hell will break loose
    😂
I have to agree with joe on his comments about espn
    Havent watched in years
Do they even talk about sports over there anymore?

  20. PassingThru Says:

The software is right; Tampa Bay plays at almost sea level. Other than that, the software is garbage.

Anyone who bets money on ESPN’s FPI software predictions is a fool. It’s a terrible tool, but then ESPN takes itself too seriously.

  21. Buc50 Says:

The Bucs always seem to find the answer to high flying offenses. ’99 Rams, Super Bowl Raiders, 15-1 Vikings and the Chiefs are just the latest.

  22. Doctor Stroud Says:

My diagnosis is that Seth Walder and his computer clearly have proprioception!

  23. SOEbuc Says:

What the hell is an FPI? Don’t let it get to you Joe. Brady feeds off this BS people saying he’s not good enough. And if Brady feeds of it, so does the rest of the Bucs.

  24. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

I wrote this yesterday on PFT article that said “Pat Mohomes puts some of the blame on himself” (so tired of the Chiefs and their excuses):

I do not recall the Losing team in a Super Bowl crying so much about the line, toes, game plans or whatever. The Chiefs Oline was basically the same one that put up 30+ on a very good Bills team in the AFC Championship game.

Lets give credit here please. It was not the Chief’s Oline, not Reid’s bad game plan, not a toe, IT WAS THE BUCS DEFENSE, plain and simple. When was the last time a SB team – that led the NFL in offense – was held to single digit scoring – NO TDS?! I love Reid (one of my fav coaches) and Mahomes, but all this crying is simply the sign of a poor loser.

My apologies Joe for possibly not giving you ‘contributing author’ credit…

  25. Beeej Says:

Bucs have owned the Chiefs the last 7 quarters, and I don’t expect that to change in the near future

  26. Youngbucs Says:

    😂😂😂😂😂

  27. James Allen Lofton Says:

Brady haters include fans and media. For some sports writers, facts will never get in the way of their self indulgencing egotistical opinions. Sports is about the athletes. When they excel their performance will speak for themselves and the “opinion” of Seth Walder will sound hollow.

  28. dls5492 Says:

I don’t care what kind of track stars or superman qb you have, If you can’t block, If you can’t control the line of scrimmage, if you can’t tackle, you going to lose. Football 101.

  29. August 1976 Buc Says:

So many experts must still be butt hurt from embarrassment of picking the Chiefs and watching them get curb stomped by the Bucs. GO BUCS!!!!!

  30. Tc Says:

I am not sure why the so called experts think the chiefs are so great. To me their defense is average and not as good as the saints. The chiefs might not get by buffalo. I am actually more afraid of the rams with Stafford. Everyone must be forgetting the bucs beat 3 teams in the playoffs on the road and Brees, Rodgers and mahomes and an end run of 8 games in a row.

  31. SOEbuc Says:

You ain’t got depth, you ain’t got sh!t.

  32. Brandon Says:

Joe, you know critical thinking is a thing of the past. How dare you ask that? Today is about the media regurgitating numbers and useless statistics that have little relevance to what they’re trying to prove. Skepticism and critical thinking has no place around here.

  33. Pewter Power Says:

Yep he’s not the only one saying this kind of nonsense Adam schein out out his top 9 offenses and had us at like 6 or 7. All I can say is thanks for the bulletin board motivation I’m sure the team will take it personally and act accordingly. I don’t really care about any stat this year except the W/L column

  34. Infomeplease Says:

Joe, I couldn’t have said it better!!!!! The Bucs want a rematch in the SB!!! Does KC??????

  35. TSmitty3000 Says:

Ummmmm did ESPN watch the Super Bowl?

  36. Weebs10 Says:

Get em joe! Computer models have replaced critical thinking..

  37. Joe Says:

Get em joe! Computer models have replaced critical thinking..

Not sure if you are aware how much truth there is in that sentence. 🙁

  38. Joe Says:

Joe, you know critical thinking is a thing of the past. How dare you ask that? Today is about the media regurgitating numbers and useless statistics that have little relevance to what they’re trying to prove. Skepticism and critical thinking has no place around here.

You are sadly onto something here. People just regurgitate numbers without thinking. It’s mostly what chased Joe away from baseball.

We live in a numbers world. If you can’t slap a GD number on something, people think it’s useless.

  39. David G Says:

Pin this up in the Bucs locker room!!!! HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW! Moment!

  40. Youngbucs Says:

Like regurgitation of ints # from20-30 years ago to make a point in today’s nfl😂

  41. a-bomb Says:

This analysis doesn’t make sense. Cheifs: projected No.1 offense, projected No. 16 defense. Bucs: projected No. 3 offense, projected No. 5 defense. Doesn’t two top five units equate to a better “team” than a top five offense and middle of the pack defense?

  42. Steven007 Says:

The Chefs brand new offensive line consisting of three replacement parts albeit some okay ones, will take it at least half a season to even become cohesive. Without a cohesive o line we’ll see how this supposed projected number one offense does against teams gunning for them as much as teams will be gunning for us.

  43. gotbbucs Says:

I want to see how this team comes out to start the year. If the offense looks in rhythm early it will be an unbelievably long year for any defense they face. If, and that’s a big IF, they stay healthy and can build on last year’s momentum, I could see Brady absolutely go off for ridiculous seasonal numbers, like 5500 yards and 55 TD’s ridiculous. There’s just too many pieces on that offense for teams to defend.
If they get through the first three weeks without a stumble I could see them going on a 45+ point per game terror for a while once all the gears are hitting.

The Chiefs are going to be unbelievable too. I can definitely see a Super Bowl rematch happening.

  44. MoneyMartinez Says:

    This is BS.

Ok so maybe KC got a rebamped OL. I havent read anything abt an upgrade on D, they cant stop the run. Wont be able to stop it this year either. If anything other teams received a blueprint on how to beat KC. They arent going to make it.to the afc championship game. Take that to the bank.

  45. JW Says:

The way i look at it is when was the last time the Chiefs scored a touchdown against the Bucs. Was it the first half of the regular season game?

  46. Joe Says:

The way i look at it is when was the last time the Chiefs scored a touchdown against the Bucs. Was it the first half of the regular season game?

A streaker crossed the goal line more than the Chiefs did in the Super Bowl.

Let that sink in for a moment.

  47. SlyPirate Says:

    WHAT’S HILARIOUS …

The Bucs showed the league how to beat their offense. It’s a copycat league. I expect the Browns beat them in Game 1.

Mahomes is breaking down. He’s played a lot of football. He’ll have an injury at some point this season.

KC won’t make the Super Bowl. They shouldn’t have been there last year. Browns got hosed.

  48. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Steven007 with comeback of the year award! ” ON A LEVEL ABOVE UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE” should be used by every Bucs fan that reads all the bs written about our WORLD CHAMPS and comments on. The Bucs are on a level above every team until after the next Super Bowl.

  49. Duane Says:

Mahomes is a tremendous talent, and likely the face of the NFL. How many SB wins does he have? Shouldnt he have won at least two by now? Paying a guy $50 a year is going to be a problem as time goes on. I find it interesting that there is little consideration of the fact that KC’s window may be closing. Kelce isnt getting any older, they have already had to revamp their offensive line, and the Browns, Bills, and Titans all got better. Also interesting that spread sheeters and stat heads never figured out a statistic or algorithm to explain the value of a player like Tom Brady. Its just talk to keep the season interesting.

  50. Bucsfanman Says:

C’mon! How can anyone be surprised by this? KC are media darlings, plain and simple. Even after stomping them SOUNDLY, some still cannot bring themselves to accept that the Bucs were the superior team.
I’m ok with being the “underdog”, as ridiculous as that sounds.

  51. PassingThru Says:

I commend KC for rebuilding their OLine on the fly, but the fact remains that they’ll likely have a worse OLine than last season. I like Thuney at LG, but they badly overpaid for his versatility as they hadn’t landed a LT at the time he signed. Their LT Orlando Brown cost them a second, and he is more of a scheme fit for a running team like the Ravens, and he expects to be paid bank now that he’s moved from RT to LT. Pass protection is not his strong suite. Kyle Long is, to the surprise to no one, is already injured. I like their draft pick Creed Humphrey, but of course he’s a rookie. Trey Smith at RG and Niang at RT haven’t proven themselves in this league.

In short, KC lost an excellent tandem of OTs from last season. LT Eric Fisher was a Pro Bowler, RT Mitchell Schwartz was a Pro Bowler. I don’t see how the talking heads can rave about the improved KC OLine without taking into account that the pass protection will be worse this season.

  52. Rod Munch Says:

    Seriously… who cares?

This stuff might sometimes have bothered you when the Bucs weren’t champs – but now, who cares? The Bucs proved it on the field, and any doubters will hopefully push them to repeat.

I’ll add to the doubt however, we’ve had two SB teams, and I have zero doubt in my mind that that 2002 team would have kicked the crap out of this team. Now, you want some motivation, go use all those offensive weapons to have the best offense in the history of the NFL, because you’d need that against the best defense in the history of the NFL — and for those that don’t know, that was the 2002 Bucs.

  53. Crickett Baker Says:

I read somewhere that Mahomes said he felt “haunted” for weeks after the S. B. Our defense messed up his mind. By his own admission, it took him quite a while to get over it. He is probably very happy he doesn’t have to face us in the regular season, and if he does in the playoffs? I bet he has flashbacks. We obviously gave him PTSD.

  54. Mike Says:

    “Lies, damned lies, and statistics”

  55. Nick2 Says:

31-9 ummm wow BSPN can spin it any way they want its still a butt whoopin!!!

  56. Nick2 Says:

Like Kelce said they just werent up for the Superbowl lol.

  57. Tomcanlickdeeznutz Says:

Wow, is there contaminated water down there? Cause Bucs not at KC level sounds just about right. If the OL would’ve been better, you all wouldn’t be enjoying that trophy. But hey, enjoy, cause I only hope your crappy team meets us in the Bowl this year. Revenge is a dish best served cold. Good luck on that runitback curse. Lol

  58. Joe Says:

If the OL would’ve been better, you all wouldn’t be enjoying that trophy.

What was Kansas City’s excuse against the Bills in the AFC title game? Same injuries and they put up 38 points on a defense statistically better than the Bucs. You can’t tell Joe a right tackle is worth 29 points.

  59. Joe Says:

I read somewhere that Mahomes said he felt “haunted” for weeks after the S. B.

Shaq is in his head. 🙂

  60. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Ha ha the one hit blunder comes up here with his troll name and again talking about what DIDN’T happen as apposed to what actually happened, well actually he did my bad. He did say what happened, we enjoyed that trophy and got a parade to prove it. It’s easy when a streaker enters the end zone more than Chiefs did😅🤣😂

  61. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

No quite on Chiefs level? We whipped their @rses!

  62. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Tomcanlickdeeznutz Says

If their defense would have been better.
If their QB would have been better.
If their ST would have been better.

Keep going buddy. All you are doing is stating that their team was not better.

  63. Eddie Marz Says:

I’ll take The. Bucs. Keep the computer, take The Chiefs, I’ll take THE BUCS!

  64. Get Em Says:

Must have been a Dominion machine

  65. Bbro Says:

Our D against their O and their D against our O we’re superior

  66. Steve M. Says:

Let the Bucs be portrayed as the underdog to KC.
That’s just what motivates TB12 and the Bucs to win !
