Despite The Accolades, Joe Tryon Is Still A Rookie

Now Joe thinks the world of Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians. He’s a straight-shooter and Joe loves that from coaches.
Having written that, and with all due respect to Arians, Joe wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Arians sometimes uses a little puffery to get a message across to a player or as a motivational tactic.
Take earlier this training camp when Arians claimed “sometimes’ rookie outside linebacker Joe Tryon was “kicking” the tails of Tristan Wirfs and Donovan Smith.
Knowing how dominant Wirfs was last year against some of the best edge rushers in the game, for a rookie to be schooling him the first couple of weeks of training camp seems almost too much for Joe to swallow.
Lest we forget, Tryon is still a rookie. He hasn’t even snapped on a chin strap in a worthless preseason game yet. And to Tryon’s credit, he all but admitted all of this yesterday to the Tampa Bay pen and mic club.
“It’s a difficult defense,” Tryon said of learning Bucs’ defensive coordinator Todd Bowles’ system. “But I’m taking it in and studying – making sure I’m on top of all of my notes. That’s all I could really ask for.”
Very wise and honest answer from a young player.
Some guys would have said with a wave of the hand, “Ah, I’ve got this down.” Not Tryon. And Joe thinks that is the sign of a well-grounded young player.
And even though his coach claimed Tryon was — at times — getting the best of Smith and Wirfs, Tryon wouldn’t take the bait to beat his chest. Instead, he reiterated he’s still learning.
“You have to have a plan to execute really,” Tryon said of facing Smith or Wirfs, or future NFL offensive linemen. “Your technique has to be on point. You have to have that mindset that they’re not going to stop you. You’re not going to win every rep and you have to have that realistic mindset.”
Joe is intrigued to see how Tryon — in his first football game since December 2019 — does against the bungling Bengals and their subpar offensive line.
While Joe would be happy with a fine game from Tryon, Joe is just hoping Tryon can play well enough that he can cut some snaps for Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaq Barrett down the stretch run.

Yea uh don’t know if Accolades is a fitting word, he’s done nothing and practice never counts. Preseason barely says much and guys who get more time on the field get better as the season goes on. He’ll have jitters Friday night not having played in 2 years

Seems to me it all counts including these practices.
I remember watching All or Nothing Arizona Cardinals.
David Johnson was not Arizona’s 1st running back choice that year. They really wanted Ameer Abdullah who the Lions snagged 1 or 2 picks ahead of them in the 2nd round.
In the series, as training camp started there were clips where you heard Arians saying how did we get this David Johnson guy so late. He also was preaching both compliments to Johnson and making sure he did not get to big of head but ultimately said he was going to be a big time player for them in his first season.
This feels a little like the David Johnson dialogue to me.
It all counts for the coaches.

Hopefully Tryon gives Bowles more opportunities to move JPP inside in nickel sometimes.
Tryon-Vea-JPP-Barrett would be a hell of a lineup in obvious passing downs.

That could be a scary D-Line even though it’s pretty scary already. What’s more impressive is they have great depth.

Marine, I agree regarding the battle between Britt and Stuard. I hope they both show out and somehow make it onto the team or at least the practice squad.

I haven’t heard much of anything about either Britt or Stuard on any of the training camp review shows. Nothing good but nothing bad either. So it will be interesting to see them in action.
My guess is that Britt may make the final 53 if he can contribute on special teams. Stuard will probably be a practice squad guy…

“he’s done nothing and practice never counts.” WHAT? Did you ever play football? I doubt it. I guarantee you practice counts and it counts a lot. When a freshman came into the program in 3 or 4 practices we knew if he was a bum, average or a stud and we knew if he soft or physical if he had juice or not! Practice does count just ask anybody who played.
