Another Year, Another Beat-The-Heat Twist
July 27th, 2021Joe’s been around long enough to remember glorious two-a-day practices in pads with ferocious hitting at the University of Tampa.
And Joe remembers various summer philosophies of The Lost Decade head coaches working at the modern-era One Buc Palace.
It seems every coach was trying to figure out how to beat the heat and/or not let it beat you in the regular season or before September arrives.
Lovie Smith insisted on afternoon practices. “You practice when you play,” Lovie concluded. His 2014 team trailed 17-0 on opening day to the Panthers at the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway. His 2015 team got the snot beaten out of them by the Titans, which later secured the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.
Commander Greg Schiano was all about starting practice before 8 a.m. to save the bodies and sharpen the mind, and he liked night practice.
Joe could go on, but the point is that every coach views summer training camp differently. Bucco Bruce Arians, as fans read/will read in Joe’s practice notes today, Arians marched his team to the Glazer Shed (aka the Bucs’ indoor facility) to simulate an air conditioned halftime. The Bucs emerged about 10 a.m. after Arians lectured them on finishing practice like it’s a game.
And the head coach was happy with the results.
How much Arians uses the Glazer Shed this summer is a mystery to media and fans. He promised to “beat the sh*t” out of his players with a rough training camp, but he used the Glazer Shed quite a bit in previous seasons. Arians relies a lot of his sports science/training staff, as well as his gut.
Joe has faith in Arians’ ability to read his team and find a magic touch, unlike his predecessors.
Joe knows players, however, will continue to pray for clouds and rain and for someone to put a shade tent on the practice-field sidelines.

How about the BA? Always learning, growing and improving.
If the best ability is availability, it’s on the coaches to do what they can to improve and stay healthy.
SIDE NOTE:
Madden released it’s Top 10 rushers. Shaq is not on the list. Shaq has more sacks over the last two years than everyone on the list. Von Miller, who didn’t play last year, is on the list.
JOE – Please!!!! Ask Shaq if he knows about this and has any thoughts? Let’s get him pissed off and extra-motivated to be DPOY.

The heat in Tampa is no joke I hope everyone is Hydrating after practice as much as they can !

BA needs a break from the heat too … that is how he gauges how long to stay in the heat 😎

Bird . I think that’s a good rule not to curse. You don’t have to curse to get your point across. Cursing ain’t never proved nothing or helped any player get better.

SLY
I didn’t see the list but I’m curious, is JJ Watt on there?
I’m wondering because he has 10.5 sacks COMBINED in 4 of the last 5
seasons. Most has to do with injuries.
2018 he was awesome.
The point is, since the end of 2015 he has had one good season. He’s basically cashing checks because of his name and distant past.
Don’t misinterpret that, he is a Hall of Famer, but all too often voting from everything to a madden list to the pro bowl relies on a persons name and not what they’ve done recently

Absent cursing I might spontaneously combust

Cuss all you want. Who cares? As long as you don’t cost the team a 15 yard penalty and you can ball who gives two poops?

17 count em 17 hitting practices this year. My daddy played with a leather helmet. Probably why I’m so foolish. It makes for bad early football. The master uses at least the first 3 regular season games as extension of the pre season. As y’all figured out, it’s how you catch fire late, and win lonbardies

Marine Buc it’s called respecting another person’s boundaries. Just like you wouldn’t appreciate a feminine man standing too close to you or putting his hands on you despite you telling him your boundaries. A lot of people took their insults of Lovie to a personal level as if he did something to them personally like the Joe’s who look for every opportunity to drag him thru the mud. Lovie didn’t like the cussing because of his faith yet you guys clown him because you don’t believe in the God he believes in. That’s your choice but why can’t you respect him for that instead of making him out to be lesser of a man because of it? .

Leave your religion out of the law books and the Lockerroom. Cussing is ingrained in any sport, but especially in anyone with an interest in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Joe needs to incorporate a ‘like’ feature into this site

@ David
I agree with you. I was only saying cussing on the field is ok. Im not OK with someone verbally assaulting Lovie Smith. He deserves more respect than that IMO.
His head coaching gig didnt pan out here but he was also an awesome assistant coach here under Dungy plus he took Chicago to the Super Bowl with Rex freaking Grossman as his QB…
I have nothing but respect for Lovie.

Yeah sparky you got a problem with THE RELIGION that this country and it’s legal system were founded upon but do you have problem with the broke down right chicken wingers who are ALWAYS bringing up their political thoughts and propaganda up on this here football site, or are you one of them? Politics don’t belong in the discussion but so many bring it in anyways. Double standard. I have religion so do my level best not cuss because I used to use it because I enjoyed it so much, but never ask people not to cuss around me because who am I to tell others not to, I just now get a kick out of hearing it.
Marine Buc, mad props to you. At times I wish I had gone in the Marines than the Navy because you guys are taught to be disciplined (something I need) and to be warriors where in the Navy are so many lushes and bloated guys its not even funny. I couldn’t handle too many idiotic rules and clowns in charge so did my time and got out. I believe in rules but not like that. I’m a firm believer that EVERY able bodied born American male should do 2 years in any branch of service like Korea or Israel so they understand this country better and more love for it. I know I learned a lot but also gained a tempered love for it. Semper Fi brother

It actually does not. And there is recent evidence to back that up.
The NFL had a short training camp last year. No OTAs. No minicamps. No preseason. Offense was up last year and penalties were down. That’s just the opposite of bad football.
July 28th, 2021 at 2:57 pm
Umm Joe.
The refs were told to let certain infractions go. That’s what made for “cleaner” football. It doesnt matter if there’s zero or ten preseason games, teams will always play sloppier at the beginning of every season. No biggie play ball
