Non-Verbal On Display?
July 26th, 2021Recently, James Palmer of NFL Network said Bucs quarterback Tom Brady was working on a new project this offseason.
And the fruits of that project may have been demonstrated on the Bucs’ practice field this morning during a roasting training camp practice.
Palmer stated Brady, in his throwing sessions with Bucs receivers, was working on non-verbal communications which, per Palmer, he didn’t have much time to get down with his receivers last season.
In an 11-on-11 drill, Brady went back to pass and had to shuffle his feet from pressure and slightly moved to his left, maybe a step.
On the play, Mike Evans went down the left seam. Evans was double-teamed with good coverage but not blanket coverage.
Brady edged his way to his left quickly and did a very short pump fake. In retrospect, it seems like the fake may have been a signal to Evans. Brady then threw the pass short of Evans but in an area that only Evans had a shot of getting to the pass.
At just about the time Brady released the pass, Evans darted back towards Brady, splitting the two defenders to create separation and make a helluva catch for about 8-10 yards.
Now Joe does not know for sure if the play was a result of Brady’s offseason work with receivers on non-verbal communication, but it sure seemed that way for Evans to react the way he did, breaking off his route and making a beeline back to Brady.
Scripted or not, planned or not, it was a helluva play.

Those come back passes are nearly impossible to stop when executed properly.

Something that would never happen in team organized OTA’s

If that was scripted, that’s huge! I think he had that kind of communication with Edelman

The passing game is solid and should improve with chemistry between Coach-QB-WR.
That said, the run game is where the Bucs can really grow the offense in 2021.

Why not? Currently it is still underwear football, just like OTAs.

Well I was referring to Brady and the boys running their own practice get togethers doing their own thing as opposed to the coaches running the whole team with a much broader focus typical scripted OTA …
