The Sickness and vaccinations seem to be popular yet touchy subjects for NFL players these days.
Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians all but said yesterday he’s had enough of begging players to take the needle and announced he will have the NFL slap any of his non-vaccinated players caught not wearing a mask or breaking COVID protocols some $14,000.
We already know Playoff Lenny said he “can’t” take the needle. And what about hard-hitting safety Jordan Whitehead? He was placed on the COVID list Friday and did not appear to have attended the Bucs’ Super Bowl ring ceremony Thursday night based on his Instagram account.
Last night, Whitehead spoke up on Twitter — since deleted — about vaccines. Well, sort of. You be the judge (see below).
Whitehead said he knows of people who have been vaccinated and still had the COVID. Joe’s not a medical professional but that seems accurate based on research. That doesn’t mean the positive test directly leads to a terrible illness, just means you are largely protected.
What Joe would like to know is if Whitehead was referring to himself or, based on his experience with someone having COVID despite vaccination, Whitehead concluded the vaccine won’t help him?
Whether he tested positive or came in contact with someone who was positive, Whitehead will not be at One Buc Palace this morning practicing as training camp kicks off.

Well-said Alanbucsfan. IMO it’s about respecting individuals’ right-to-choose while also recognizing that choices have consequences & ramifications. COVID is a rapidly-evolving beast, as evidenced by this newer Delta variant, and we as a nation & as individuals can’t be so rigid that we can’t adapt to its’ changing nature.
I was fortunate enough to be one of the first ones in Hillsborough County to get vaccinated (Pfizer), and CHOSE to because of age (over 65) and potential risk factors. At the time (Jan), those over 65 in Florida who contracted COVID-19 with a severe-enough case to be hospitalized represented over 80% of the COVID deaths in our state. The Pfizer vaccine had just been approved so there was no ‘track record of effectiveness’ yet established, however, its ‘projected’ efficacy was about 95%. After a lot of research, I felt that those odds were better than what I had without the vaccine. Thus far its ‘track record’ seems to bear that out. Not perfect, but no vaccine is IMO.
Some vaccines have however proven to be so effective that they’re considered to be ‘mandatory’ for school-age kids to attend schools or child-care centers by various states. However, the CDC doesn’t set those requirements. Each state decides which vaccines are required for your child’s enrollment & attendance at a childcare facility or school in that state.
States also set the rules for what businesses can & can’t require, and the NFL is free to establish their own requirements. Individuals can still decide whether or not to take the vaccine, but again, there are consequences & ramifications associated with those choices. As long as others’ choices don’t adversely impact myself or those who I love then I’ll continue to support their right-to-choose. IF their choices DO in fact adversely impact me or those who I love THEN ‘Houston, we have a problem’.

How does one determine whether another persons choice to remain unvaccinated adversely affect you or loved ones? This has become a new tool to segregate society. Now those who choose to take what does amount to an experimental drug entitle themselves to a moral high ground over those who are skeptical of its safety and detrimental effects.
Perhaps some of us who choose to avoid being pharma guinea pigs have determined that the contradicting statements from the current drug pushers in 2020 creates an issue. This vaccine has been a political football, shanked wide left over and over.
Now it’s time to shame everybody who doesn’t follow the herd. Vegans want you to stop eating meat because they don’t eat meat. So they shame you. Prius drivers are saving the planet, while you choose to drive a V-8 or diesel truck. So they shame you from their coal fired clown car. Now the vaccinated, who would have refused this injection had November’s results been different, shame you from their moral mountain as selfish, stupid, and radical.
I respect your decision as you have researched and weighed your risk. That’s freedom. Looks like the NFL is more concerned about its authority being bucked by players determining what is best for their own self interest. Amazingly enough, it seems only certain businesses have the right to determine how to run their own company, who they can refuse service to, and how they treat employees. Many people who claimed they were fighting authoritarianism now find themselves planting their flag on the moral hill of authority.
That needle has become a weapon. Of compliance.

Years from now when your watching a Matlock marathon, commercials for the largest class action suit in world history will be played nonstop as Matlock solves mystery after mystery.
And just think of all the money we missed out on by not volunteering for human trials of experimental drugs. I’m thinking about going to Law School to get in early on what could be the next class action lotto ticket.

Not surprised. There’s no political gain in calling every sickness a COVID case anymore. That ended Jan. 20.
And we would all know the real time death count, but amazingly enough CNN pulled their on screen death toll count graphic, interestingly enough, also on Jan 20. Probably just a coincidence. Couple that with the fact the PCR level for positive tests was always too low.
Guess the guy who got killed on I-4 after being run over by 4 cars after crashing his motorcycle, and I’m just spitballing here, may not have died from Covid-19.

There-in lies the biggest part of the disconnect on this issue IMO. No one has said a word about vegans. No one has said a word about Priuses (kudos on the ‘clown car’ descriptor though). But statements like yours (above) project what YOU believe is the NFL’s intent in creating THEIR policy. And you have no way of knowing whether that’s true or not. That’s pretty much what MISINFORMATION is.
The NFL is a BUSINESS (a BIG business actually) and in our free enterprise system, they have certain rights & responsibilities. Far as I’m concerned, the NFL hierarchy is trying their best to fulfill their responsibilities via their vaccination policy. Appears to be within their right within our state, so what’s your issue with them exercising THEIR rights?

Life Insurance and Health Insurance companies alike are currently looking at exclusion riders being attached to policies directly eliminating the unvaccinated from coverage. It is simple math folks you will not die from covid if you are vaccinated(1 out of a million nitpickers).

I presume you are referring to the article by By Dr. Tomislav Meštrović . What you conveniently leave out are the FACTS. Those that died were elderly with a PLETHORA of co-morbidities. Easy to make a case when you cherry pick facts and quotes. Israeli hospital care is no match for the care we receive in this country and that also contributes to more morbidity.
You still cannot dispute the FACT that in this country , of the current deaths from COVID 99.8% are unvaccinated.

I think I’ve cracked the code as to why there are so many unvaccinated people- they require you to show ID to get the shot.
We’ve been told people are too stupid to find a DMV. So when will requiring ID to get the shot be determined as discriminatory and disenfranchising? Surely you can’t expect people to prove who they are to get a shot. Why would that even be important? If it’s so necessary to get a shot, shouldn’t all people, even those without ID be able to do so? Until I’m able to find a DMV to get an ID, I just won’t be able to get that shot.
This Jim Crow era law must be rescinded to ensure that all people hav me equal and fair access to the vaccine. Until then, you’ll just have to deal with it.

Strange age that we live in.. We hear Medical professional advice…scientific data….percentages and statistics. My thoughts are this. I wanted to wait for version 2.0 of the vaccine. Just like I didn’t rush to get lasik when it first came out. However now that enough other people (aka guinea pigs) have taken the vaccine and we have the data on side effects and the effectiveness, it would seem to me that the odds say take the shot. I’m pretty sure most professional gamblers have gotten vaccinated, they know to play the odds.

Instead of showing your license or another document to prove you live in Florida, you will now be asked verbally whether you’re a resident, or whether you’re living here for work.
You will still need to complete a screening and consent form, and you will still need to show proof of age to comply with FDA emergency-use authorization.
You can show your birth certificate to prove your age. You stated you would get your vaccine if you did not have to go to the DMV and you dont. So go get your shot.

I think everyone has the right to decide their own fate as to get or not get the jab. That would be fine if we each lived in a vacuum and weren’t a risk to others. So if you do get sick there is a broad range of possibilities. Depending on your age and health you may have very mild symptoms and be over it quickly. Or you could be one of the unlucky ones and have a terrible illness leading to a long hospital stay including intubation and death or survive with life long disabilities. And last but far from least, you might pass the disease to your family or loved ones. If you have any. So go ahead tough guy. Be a stubborn individual . Don’t feel like you are part of and responsible for anybody else in your extended group of friends and family.

As for the deeper issue of personal liberty vs. public safety might I recommend V for Vendetta for your viewing pleasure. I think the point some people are trying to make is that whatever laws and rules are made concerning the vaccine, set a precedent that can be used to reduce freedom of choice in other areas of life.
As for disinformation, just remember the wizard’s first and second rule:
Rule #1: People are stupid. They will believe anything, either because they want it to be true, or they are afraid it might be true.

True. So for me it becomes a quality of life vs. quantity of life question. While I have no idea what the long-term effects of the vaccine might be, I can’t imagine they will be much worse than the long-term effects of my drinking, smoking, and eating fast food. So for me the short-term benefits of the vaccine outweigh the possible long-term side effects.

Any time in the hospital, particularly the ICU racks up an astronomical cost. You will never get full compliance for a vaccine, FDA approved or not. Suggesting you could or should is equivalent to living in a utopian fantasyland. I could care less if you choose to wear your seatbelt or not, but if you drive drunk that’s a different story. Choosing not to vaccinate is former not the latter. As for anyone who contracts covid after taking the vaccine, chances are the it protected you from a bad outcome, same as the seatbelt. Does the seatbelt help you avoid the crash?

What’s happened in society? If this was 1917 and the Spanish Flu was killing thousands, and an effective vaccine was discovered and mass-produced, would 1/3 of the population refuse to take it? I doubt it.
My only guess is that distrust of government and partisan politics, driven by a 24/7/365 “us vs. them” news cycle, have weaponized this into a deadly pissing contest that has already claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and left many more people with health side effects that will be felt for the remainder of their lives.

Of the 17-50 million estimated deaths, millions of those were not actually due to the influenza itself…but by bacterial infections caused by unsanitary conditions, lack of medical resources, and related complications. There were no modern hospitals or ICU’s back then…not to mention availability of oxygen, proper ventilation, antibiotics, steroids to help breathing, fever reducers, etc….all things we have now to help combat COVID-19…and yet millions worldwide still have died from it. The fact that we have all these modern treatments and medical resources now has probably already saved millions more from dying.

There are four serology studies from last summer in Congo, Kenya, Malawi and Zambia. In each of these they determined the population infectivity of the countries was between 4 and 10%, with rates tilting higher in the cities and lower in rural areas. This is in stark contrast to the population covid PCR positive testing rate which is commonly viewed on the Johns Hopkins site. In each case the authors declare that the infectivity rate in the majority of Africa is under reported by as much as a thousandfold because they do not have the capacity to run the test. In most of the countries the capacity was built up at their national influenza center, but the bulk of the hospitals and public health offices do not have the ability to run PCR either due to lack of equipment, lack of funding or lack of reagents. You can’t detect and you can’t report what you don’t look for.
To date Nigeria has run barely over 2 million total tests in a country with 200 million people. Almost all of those tests were run in Lagos.The majority of the hospitals there do not test for covid at all. Postmortem studies have found as many as 16 to 20% of total hospital deaths were in covid positive patients, but not reported to the public health lab and not added to the covid fatality rate because they were not tested at or before the time of death.
All of this information is publicly available but you have to be willing to read the primary scientific literature. If you choose to get your news from the examiner or pundit, then I am sorry, but you are not going to get an informed data set. You will end up with a report Nigeria only has a .0013% covid positive rate and it’s simply not true

I would like to point out that third world countries have a tendency to over report such things for the sympathy angle. If, as you say, they only had 2 million tests to run,they would have saved them for the people with intense symptoms and would thus have a higher percentage of positives.
They’ll never get the help they need by under reporting.

It would make sense for them to save the short supply for critical care diagnosis. In reality, even though the bulk have been donated to the country they still end up going to test negative or minor symptom affluent people who pay a reported $143 US Dollars on average for the test. I guess superficially you can back this path of action by saying the diagnosis wouldn’t change the treatment in critical cases? It’s not like they’re going to have monoclonal antibody therapy.
They have no option but to under report because a large number of the places still record on paper with no digital interface. Even pre-covid the estimates in many African countries were only one in 10 deaths get properly reported per year. This is also linked to there often being no requirement to do so.
