Mixed Emotions

July 20th, 2021

Tom Brady at the presidential podium today at the White House, while one man looks on with some mixed emotion.

Yes, Joe was at the White House today sniffing out all things Bucs, and trying not to get in trouble with the Secret Service.

(Joe only got barked harshly at once by those who protect the President, but that story will be saved for The Ira Kaufman Podcast.)

As about 40 Bucs players stood on the White House stairs for their Super Bowl ceremony (assistant coaches had their own seating area), Joe noticed one in the back who is no longer on the roster, center A.Q. Shipley, who recently became a Tampa Bay assistant.

Shipley (upper right in the photo above) made two starts at center last season, as the offensive line shuffled to accommodate the loss of Ali Marpet to a concussion.

Shipley played quite well before suffering a serious neck injury very late against the Rams, a game in which the O-line neutered Aaron Donald but the Bucs still lost. Bucco Bruce Arians was horrified by the injury and acknowledged it was likely a career-ender.

Joe talked to Shipley today about being on the White House stage, sort of his final act as a player.

First, Shipley, 35, assures Bucs fans that he’s ok. And Shipley told Joe he could still play “but no team is going to clear me.”

It was obvious to Joe that Shipley would love one more shot to suit up, but it’s time to move on.

Joe and Shipley chatted about the challenge ahead of Bucco Bruce Arians — to take a team from a White House celebration to a massive Super Bowl Ring party on Thursday, and then expect everyone to have a back-to-basics mentality when they return for training camp physicals on Saturday.

Arians will have the right delivery for his you-know-nothing message coming for players to kick off camp, Shipley says. But he added that it might take at least a few days for it all to sink in order to produce the desired mentality.

So Tom PO’ed a carnival barker has been, in the process of attending and making some jokes at the Whitehouse. No big deal.

We can tell you aren’t worried, Tom…you are the GOAT.

  3. All lives matter Says:

Outside of the Presidents office who’s invited the winning Super Bowl team every season regardless of whether they had an R or a D behind their name, it’s the people who try to make it about politics. Today’s invite was not about politics.

  4. crazyBucs_CL Says:

i guess TB12 is NO different from 99% of celebrities. he wants media love and cushions. no go to the “office” previously; respect for the “office” now. is the GOAT hypocrite??
a fair man should have stick with EQUAL decision… no politics = no to the “office” at all, no matter who is there….
even the GOAT can not escape the group thinking/pressure; Sad.
Still you are the only GOAT, TB12, but in the game ONLY…๐Ÿˆ . ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

  5. crazyBucs_CL Says:

Tom Brady: “Not a lot of people think that we could’ve won. In fact, I think about 40% of the people still don’t think we won.”

    Biden: “I understand that.”

Brady: “You understand that, Mr. President?”

    Biden: “I understand that.”
    ——————–
TB12, 90% of your money come from that “40% of the people”. Don’t bite the hand that is feeding you, buddy.

America the Beautiful w/ Brady & the entire Glazer Family there

  7. Wigg Says:

And just like that,Iโ€™m done with the Bucs!!!!

  8. Buc50 Says:

I was hoping they gave the president the number 7 jersey….like 7 million.

  9. Joe Says:

Yes, Joe deleted a ton of political comments here and 100 comments under the initial post of the day from the White House. –Joe

  10. Oneilbuc Says:

    Wigg . You ain’t a bucs fan any way lol ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜‚ !!!

  11. Beej Says:

I didn’t take Brady’s comments as an insult to anyone, dudes mess with each other. One of the funniest things I’ve ever heard was Larry Bird bitching at Barkley because the Sixers had a white guy covering Bird, and he felt insulted about it

  13. Irishmist Says:

I think Aaron Rodgers looks good with a shaved head.

  14. SlyPirate Says:

This is a healthy American tradition that I’m glad to see return. It’s good for the US to see a lighthearted display of comradery.

  15. SOEbuc Says:

Thanks Joe. The political battles are not for true Bucs fans.

  16. SOEbuc Says:

Do me a favor and become a good oline coach Ship. Another rookie captain from a top tier oline school. Really excited to see Hainsey in OTA and preseason.

  17. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Yeah Tom, stuuupid comments. No need to make really bad political jokes on either side of the aisle.

  18. Kentucky Buc Says:

Bunch of triggered crybabies on here. A light hearted joke. Sheesh.

  19. James Says:

Where did BA buy that suit?

  20. sgrd0q Says:

Truly funny. 40% donโ€™t believe they won. Sleepy Tom. Hilarious! No matter what team you support or what political party you support – this is fun stuff! Really cool. If you are offended – go in search for a life. You may find it.

  21. Jerry Says:

Of course it was about politics. How many professional sports teams didn’t go to the White House the last 4 years and athletes made a big deal about it? Why? Politics, of course. American tradition….just as long as the correct political party is in office I guess.

Politics is now intertwined with sports thanks to people like Kaepernick. And I guess now we have to stand for two national anthems at every game thanks to the woke NFL.

And Brady’s jokes weren’t funny at all. They were cringe-worthy, divisive, and stupid. Should have just kept the speech short and sweet. Being a comedian is not his calling.

  22. Tom Sumner Says:

    TOMMY 12!!!!

  23. Tom Sumner Says:

    LFG!!!!!

  24. johnny o Says:

hello Bucs fans: sorry, I’m from the northeast, I guess we don’t appreciate the nonsense espoused by the 40%. let’s move on, this is about football! we got a chance to be special and the window is short. this team is not about politics it’s about winning another Super Bowl. everyone on board , GO BUCS!

  25. SteelStudBuc Says:

I really wanted to see some hair sniffing today. Thoroughly disappointed

  27. mg Says:

This country will never recover from the last 20 plus years of the media, celebrity loud mouths and political hacks {both sides] pinning us against each other. I wish people could be satisfied doing the job they are paid to do.

  28. gp Says:

    BTW Joes, I’m impressed.
I’d imagine it takes a little pull to get admitted into the Whitehouse with the team!
I’m curious just how well represented local and electronic media were today?

  29. mg Says:

    Great points, gp.

  30. All lives matter Says:

    DavidBigBucFan99

90% of the media would have roasted Brady had he gone to the White House under Trump’s administration. They would have been relentless.

  31. AB Says:

I liked the “Sleepy Tom” jab better. TB12 is playing both sides but only half of his comments are getting the majority of the attention.

    .
    .

    Maternity department.

  33. unbelievable Says:

Itโ€™s pretty funny how the โ€œF your feelingsโ€ crew is now crying like babies over a couple jokes.

    Not surprising, but funny.

  34. Anonymous Says:

I would rather have Lost the super bowl then hear that trash from the ๐Ÿ

  35. David Says:

Kudos to them for ignoring the ignorance and stupidity of this administration. When invited, every team in every sport should go to the White House out of respect for the office.

  36. Bruce Blahak Says:

    40% stupidity. Simple as that.

  37. Joe Says:

It’s 4 a.m. and Joe has just deleted another 30 comments, with another 50 captured by the filters.-Joe

  38. Bucsfanman Says:

Ha-ha-ha-haaaaaa! What a great day for the Bucs!

If this interaction tells us anything about us as a whole in this country, it’s that we need more laughter in our lives.

  39. SufferingSince76 Says:

What I see is that some people canโ€™t separate any aspect of their lives from politics, which is a sad commentary on todayโ€™s society. If you spend all of your time looking for things to be pissed about, youโ€™ll find it. You think your opinion is superior because youโ€™re so much smarter than everyone else. News flash! In the big scheme of things no one gives a damn about your (or my) piddly opinion. You butt hurt people arenโ€™t football fans if you look for the political on a football site.

  40. Kentucky Buc Says:

Brady looked more presidential than anyone there. Put you in mind of the Kennedy boys when they were young.

  41. Leda Says:

Tom is so handsome and classy.

  42. Pewter Power Says:

Do average people out there still actually believe they pay football players salaries even after being unable to attend games for a season? There are some pretty stupid comments in this post.

  43. YucstoBucs Says:

I guess ME13, LD54, and Gronk were part of the 40 percent ? TB12 will do and say anything for the spotlight because it just adds to his net worth and builds the brand. Thanks for helping in winning another Super Bowl and hope we can be like the Bolts and go back2back, but yesterday was very disappointing to see.

  44. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I donโ€™t get it. Who had mixed emotions?

  45. Trey Long Says:

TB12 realizes he is in show business and he has a family. Yesterday was not the hill you want to die on to make a useless political statement. There will come a time for that.

    Sorry Joe
Wasn’t trying to speak for you
I guess I “overthought” the message I was trying to deliver
