Tom Brady at the presidential podium today at the White House, while one man looks on with some mixed emotion.
Yes, Joe was at the White House today sniffing out all things Bucs, and trying not to get in trouble with the Secret Service.
(Joe only got barked harshly at once by those who protect the President, but that story will be saved for The Ira Kaufman Podcast.)
As about 40 Bucs players stood on the White House stairs for their Super Bowl ceremony (assistant coaches had their own seating area), Joe noticed one in the back who is no longer on the roster, center A.Q. Shipley, who recently became a Tampa Bay assistant.
Shipley (upper right in the photo above) made two starts at center last season, as the offensive line shuffled to accommodate the loss of Ali Marpet to a concussion.
Shipley played quite well before suffering a serious neck injury very late against the Rams, a game in which the O-line neutered Aaron Donald but the Bucs still lost. Bucco Bruce Arians was horrified by the injury and acknowledged it was likely a career-ender.
Joe talked to Shipley today about being on the White House stage, sort of his final act as a player.
First, Shipley, 35, assures Bucs fans that he’s ok. And Shipley told Joe he could still play “but no team is going to clear me.”
It was obvious to Joe that Shipley would love one more shot to suit up, but it’s time to move on.
Joe and Shipley chatted about the challenge ahead of Bucco Bruce Arians — to take a team from a White House celebration to a massive Super Bowl Ring party on Thursday, and then expect everyone to have a back-to-basics mentality when they return for training camp physicals on Saturday.
Arians will have the right delivery for his you-know-nothing message coming for players to kick off camp, Shipley says. But he added that it might take at least a few days for it all to sink in order to produce the desired mentality.

Outside of the Presidents office who’s invited the winning Super Bowl team every season regardless of whether they had an R or a D behind their name, it’s the people who try to make it about politics. Today’s invite was not about politics.

a fair man should have stick with EQUAL decision… no politics = no to the “office” at all, no matter who is there….

I didn’t take Brady’s comments as an insult to anyone, dudes mess with each other. One of the funniest things I’ve ever heard was Larry Bird bitching at Barkley because the Sixers had a white guy covering Bird, and he felt insulted about it

Of course it was about politics. How many professional sports teams didn’t go to the White House the last 4 years and athletes made a big deal about it? Why? Politics, of course. American tradition….just as long as the correct political party is in office I guess.
Politics is now intertwined with sports thanks to people like Kaepernick. And I guess now we have to stand for two national anthems at every game thanks to the woke NFL.
And Brady’s jokes weren’t funny at all. They were cringe-worthy, divisive, and stupid. Should have just kept the speech short and sweet. Being a comedian is not his calling.

What I see is that some people can’t separate any aspect of their lives from politics, which is a sad commentary on today’s society. If you spend all of your time looking for things to be pissed about, you’ll find it. You think your opinion is superior because you’re so much smarter than everyone else. News flash! Thanks for helping in winning another Super Bowl and hope we can be like the Bolts and go back2back, but yesterday was very disappointing to see.
