Drafting Two Receivers In Second “Good Call”

eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune told The Fabulous Sports Babe that with two second round picks, Bucs general manager "Mark Dominik has a chance to make a dynamic move."
Thursday afternoon, the eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune decided to phone in and visit with The Fabulous Sports Babe on WHBO-AM 1040 and talked all things Bucs.
Joe, like many Bucs fans as well as Sirius NFL Radio’s Rich Gannon, is frightened about what currently passes for the Bucs wide receivers.
Count Kaufman in the camp. He told The Fabulous Sports Babe that wide receiver better be a priority of Mark Dominik in two weeks when the NFL will hold its annual draft.
“What worries me about [Josh] Freeman is the weapons around him,” Kaufman said. “Two wide receivers in the second round would be a good call. They have to address receiver. If you add up all the touchdowns of the [returning] Bucs receivers, they may have 12 career touchdowns. That’s half a season for Randy Moss.”
Kaufman also predicted if somone high on the Bucs draft board slips “and there is always someone who slides down” Kaufman said that with the Bucs holding two second round draft choices, “Mark Dominik has a chance to make a dynamic move.”
It just blows Joe’s mind how the Bucs hierarchy expects Freeman to develop or progress much this season before the wide receiver position is beefed up.

While getting Freeman some weapons is a priority, it Blows my mind that anyone thinks Mark Dominik can make a “dynamic move” wothout the written approval of the 3 scrooges. We better be worried about the 1st round, then worry about the 2nd. Because you never know with the 3 scrooges, whether they will trade down, or hold pat.

Why not trade one of our 2nd rounders for Brandon Marshall and trade the other for Haynesworth??? That would be ideal, a total dream scenario…..

We definetly need to draft 2 WRs within our top 5 picks. Or at least come out with two by trading. There is no way we will roll with what we currently have. If we do, I’m going to seriously question the motives o the Glazers, Dom’s intelligence, and Rah’s ability to run this team. Surely they all know WR is our weakest spot behind def line. Freeman is being led to a watering hole where crocodile is waiting to twist his head off at the neck. Don’t do this to our franchise QB guys!

I agree with Joe, Haynesworth has no incentive to play hard now that he’s been paid and his contract won’t be up for another 4 or 5 years. Also, at 29 years old (at least he will be when the season starts) and at DT, while still in his “prime”, that is the age at that position where you often start to see glimpses of a decline.
I’ve said it numerous times, I am totally on board for the Marshall Plan, a 2nd this year and a conditional 4th or 5th next year. A WR at 26 is just entering his “prime” (he may even still have a little more to improve on, on the field), and it’s not uncommon to see the very good recievers play at high level in to their mid-30s, while DTs usually lose effectiveness in their early-30s.
Drafting a receiver with the 2nd round pick we don’t use on Marshall isn’t a bad idea either. We definitly need to come away with at least 2 WRs from this draft, and if those happen be early (non # 3 overall), then that’s fine by me (although no one within the organization is asking my opinion).

Rookie Wide receivers rarely make an impact. IMO getting “five” rookies to throw to is also a big risk to his development.
Shot themselves in the foot with AB, now they are in position of a desperate draft reach to fill a need they could have avoided. And exacerbated it with being stuck with the blocking icon.
Very poor GM work.

Also, with Marshall, he’s caught 100+ passes each of the last 3 years, and that includes a system and QB change (to Kyle Orton of all people) last year. I’m not saying it automatically means 100 catches if he comes to Tampa, but barring injury, 80+ catches, 1200+ yards and 6+ TDs should be very reasonable expectations.

Marshall is worth a first round pick, he might be the best WR in the league. But rookies are cheap labor and we know what our ownership is all about. CHEAP LABOR

Not so sure about that. If your coach and teammates don’t want you playing in the final game of the season when you need a win to make the playoffs… that tells Joe this dude has some serious issues.

Not only would Marshall instantly upgrade our recieving corp with a proven commodity. He has the star power to put asses back in the seats at Ray Jay. If they could grab Suh or McCoy with their first pick and get Marshall with one of their seconds, I believe you would have a renewed interest among the fan base that would show up on Sundays. It would go a long way towards getting so called “haters”, such as myself, off the Glazers cases.

The bucs need a 100 plus catch and 20tds kindof recieverand we need to stayaway from future micheal claytons of the world like LaFell from LSU. The bucs gotta do somethin cuz when our recievers get double teamed and their dropin catch after catch Freemen will be a goner without a deep threat and a solid number 2 reciever!

if they were serious about marshall, wouldn’t they have brought him in for a personal interview as the seahawks did? Given the troubled past and problems with teamates, one would think they would do that before trading anything for him.
i wouldn’t let go of the number 3 for him. But a number 2, or a lower number 1 if the bucs trade down.
100+ catches and an attitude sounds better than 16 catches and a back stabbing crybaby.

OAR compare his stats to those you just mentioned. Especially Steve Smith. That guy hasn’t been right since Jake Delhome was throwing touchdowns instead of interceptions. I like Johnson and Fitzgerald but Marshall is a complete beast and played at UCF so he would be coming home and alot happier probably. Brandon became a headcase when Denver got their new coach and promptly escorted Cutler out of Denver who he had alot of success with. I personally think our first 2nd round choice would get it done and I would finally give Dominick some props if he pulled it off. That being said I doubt it happens but we can all dream!!!

I totally agree with you Jake, if the Glazers had ANY sense at all they would stop paying Ari Fleisher the spin doctor and step up and trade for Marshall. I am afraid Dominick and the Glazers have blinders on so bad that if the Colts cut Peyton Manning they would say he is too old and won’t fit the Bucs system. Marshall is in his prime and would help Freeman IMMENSELY. Can you imagine Josh Freeman throwing the post to Brandon Marshall??? I hate talking about trades that will never happen and this is too intelligent a move for Dumnick or the Glazers to pull off as they only pull off ridiculously stupid moves.

I said “might” for a reason, its arguable. But, steve smith and randy moss are not in that category anymore. Hell, steve smith recently said himself he has lost a step and shouldnt be a #1 anymore. But its debatable for sure with Andre Johnson.

Ok let’s go younger, Even Sidney Rice and Miles Austin “might” be better than “BM”.

BM had 21 catches in ONE game. He sat out a game last year. Over the past three years he has the about the same yards if not more than moss, without tom brady throwing him the ball. The dude is somewhere around 26 or 27. Right now, he might be the best WR in the league.

OAR i have to agree with you. BM is def a TOP 5 WR in the league right now. No way in Hell are sidney Rice or Miles Austin Better than Brandon Marshall. Rice and Austin both had 1 good year BM has been ballin for about 3 years straight. SIne th 07 season the man has caught 100++ balls a year. Austin and Rice are nowhere close to those #s. Sorry nice try tho. Stop the hate on BM and just get him on the damn team.

Im sorry, but if a receiver has less catches a year and more yards, that usually means he does a lot more after the catch or he gets deeper down field. Again BM is not THE best receiver in football today(I only looked at last years rankings stats).
BTW I didnt know what you actually meant was, the best receiver the last 3 years, which again he isn’t. BM has 23 tds in last 3 years, Moss has 46 tds less catches more yards, Fitzgerald has 35 tds also more yards less catches, Andre has 25 tds 200 more yards less catches and only played 9 games in 2007.

Using both No.2 picks for WR’s is sheer lunacy. Rookie WR’s usually don’t make much of an impact thier first year. See Steve Smith. Add that with a secoind year QB and your just asking for trouble. See Reiden Anthony and Jacques Green. Besides, the Bucs need some experience at WR. Where is Gruden when you need him.

Oh, I forgot to add one thing thing. Ira Kaufman is a complete idiot. To even suggest such a thing just proves the point. He also is a great admirer of Rah Rah and Sluggo. Need I say more.
