Better Bucs Defense?

July 12th, 2021

Bucs DC Todd Bowles

Very interesting take on how the Bucs should play this fall.

Steve Wyche of NFL Network was on “Total Access” last week when the subject of the Bucs came up and their prospects for 2021.

Wyche is of the mind the Bucs will be better. No, not necessarily because park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady will be better — that’s sort of a reach to say that about a 44-year old quarterback even if Brady was better after the bye.

No, the Bucs will be better because Wyche firmly believes their defense is so beastly that even Warren Sapp might salute them with respect.

Wyche went through all sorts of stats about how the defense was downright suffocating late in the season and particularly in back-to-back-to-back wins against quarterbacks who will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Pat Mahomes.

(Yeah, it is premature to type that about Mahomes. But barring injury, does anyone not expect Mahomes to be one of the greats if not the best quarterback of his generation?).

Joe was unware of this but Wyche pointed out the Bucs defense had more picks than touchdown passes allowed facing those three monster quarterbacks.

That’s right, six picks against the slimy Saints, Packers and Chiefs versus just four touchdown passes allowed (yes, the Saints had two TD passes against the Bucs but half of those came from the arm of Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston).

As Al Michaels would say, “That’s insane!”

The lynchpin in the Bucs defense, Joe believes, is Devin White. He played like a wild man possessed in the playoffs after quarantine from testing positive for The Sickness.

If White — who had a better postseason in his first playoffs appearance than Ray Lewis did in his first playoffs — can continue that play in the regular season, this defense will be a female dog for opposing offenses.

You can see (and hear) Wyche’s take on the Bucs in the NFL Network video below.

    @Joe:

You may want to fix the “tarring injury” typo.

  2. Hodad Says:

But if Brady does play better it can only help the defense.

  3. PSL Bob Says:

Been saying it for a while. This 2021 Bus team has a chance to go down as the greatest team of all time. Awesome on both offense and defense. Injuries are the only thing stopping them.

Joe, why do I get the feeling you miss having Jameis at QB:

    Tom Brady – park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

Jameis Winston – Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Why not add GOAT to your Tom Brady list?

Sapp won’t salute. He will be too jealous. He will be all butt hurt because someone did not pay homage to him properly. He is a cancer.

Fact is that Suh is better than Sapp. JPP is better than the Magician of Disappearance, Simeon Rice, and White and David are very good, but not DB good. The difference in this Defense and the late 90s-early 2000s is Barber and Lynch. If Winfield and one of the CBs emerge, this Defense will shred the record book.

” But the no.5 overall pick is Way too high for a LB”

  7. SlyPirate Says:

    Defense is better …
    Offense is better …
    Special Teams is better …

    The NFL better watch out.

    @ AlabamaBucsFan

Jamies was an incredibly divisive figure within the bucs / joebucsfan fanbase….must have been insanely good for engagement on this website.

Nothing better to drive clicks (this revenue) than a character like that…..

All about incentives…wonder where else we’ve seen this play out with the media…….

Sue is not better than Sapp, I like Sue more than Sapp, but that has nothing to do with play on the field.

The defense wasn’t anything special in the regular season, but got hot when it mattered. However a hot streak in the playoffs rarely means the defense can play at that level all of the following season. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong, but I doubt this is an elite defense during the regular season. Personally I don’t care so long as they can turn it on for the playoffs again. But defensively speaking, they’ll probably be around 12-15 in yards and points – somewhere in that range.

If you think this defense is elite, then you think it doesn’t matter who is playing QB, that the team will still win. I do not believe that. If anything happens to Brady this team is a 3-14 team. An elite defense can win with Trent Dilfer, Rob Johnson and Shawn King at QB. That’s not this defense. But again, who cares if they can turn it on in the playoffs.

ModHairKen – Suh is better than Sapp? LOL! That could be the most tarded thing said on this site, ever. Congrats!

PLEASE STOP with the paragraph long adjectives to describe Peter King, Tom Brady or anyone. Nobody reads it in a “Rick Flair”voice like he’s cutting promos. Thanks! Signed everyone who reads past the paragraph of filler-fluff.

Good luck Jay, And Rod,The Bucs would do better than that if they started Trask. Might not be by a whole lot, but this team has a lot of talent and dudes with pride to stink it up that bad.
