Tom Brady: “Those Take A Toll On A Quarterback”
June 23rd, 2021Tom Brady was talking tonight about one of the great football truisms many fans don’t always buy into.
So many times during his years alongside the late great dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig, Bucs legend Derrick Brooks explained how important it is to deliver real hits to quarterbacks early in games. Why? Because those hits live in their heads and often can be more important than sacks.
Joe doesn’t care who the quarterback is; they’re all human. And nobody completely forgets getting drilled with their body exposed, or hitting the turf head first.
Tonight the Buccaneers debuted a new episode of In The Current, the team’s in-house Hard Knocks-type show (sans the drama and negativity common in Hard Knocks).
Brady was featured talking about Tampa Bay’s 38-10 beat down of the Packers in Week 6 last season. Mr. Seven Rings was in lock step with Brooks.
“I saw us hit Aaron [Rodgers] a few times early, and those take a toll on a quarterback over the course of a day,” Brady said. “Because then you start thinking, ‘Man, I don’t have time to get the ball down the field. I just gotta get the ball out of my hand.”
Rodgers was sacked by Lavonte David late in that second quarter, and he was roughed up twice on the final drive of the first half, which ended with Ndamukong Suh putting Rodgers on the turf.
From there, it sure seemed like Rodgers mailed it in at halftime.
The Brady-Brooks lesson is very clear. Hitting quarterbacks early matters, even if they’re not sacks on the stat sheet.

After they hit him, Rodgers was never the same.

Everytime Vita Vea was in there, Rodgers was skittish & the WR’s & RB’s were getting blasted by Whitehead
Vea didn’t play in that game. –Joe

The only QB I ever seen get really drilled and kept playing at his high level was Drew Brees… And latter it was made known he had broken ribs!

To me this article highlights the exact reason why so many fans didnt really care for Gerald McCoy. And I would bet most of the anti Gerald crowd grew up with the Dungy built Bucs defenses that showed us first hand how when you hit a QB as hard as you can it allows the defense to take over the game…….I remember back then that anytime we played an inexperienced QB the game was pretty much over before it started.
And I do firmly believe Bruce and Todd knew what McCoy was about coming in and said there was no way they were gonna put out a defense led by a guy who didnt use violent hitting as part of his game. Remember, letting go of Gerald was the first big move they made here in Tampa Bay………….And theres really no arguing the moves they made on defense. They took one of the worst defenses in all of history in the NFL and transformed them into Champions.

Tye….Maybe your too young or overlooked him but you have to put Steve Young in that category. Toughest QB I ever saw play the game. Aside from Young and Bress Im not sure who else can compare without going back half a century probably.

Jimmy Jack – have to agree. Not sure of the specifics, but seemed like GMC was fired before the new coaching staff crossed the threshold at 1BP.
They probably smudged the place as well.
One of the many reasons why……
In BA I Trust!

Don’t forget the hit Antoine Winfield Jr put on Aaron at the goal line.
Antoine absolutely crushed Aarons ribs.
Protect Tom.
Go Bucs!

What an insightful article, qb’s don’t like to get hit. I know it’s hard to come up with material this time of year, but really? Brady is no different than any other qb if you hit him. problem is, he knows how to not get hit. He gives himself up and is unwilling to take the hits he did earlier in his career. It’s mostly how he’s lasted this long. He relies much more on his internal clock these days, his offense is designed to get the ball out quickly. Long developing routes that require him to hold the ball isn’t and as never been his strong suit. The ball should be out in under three seconds. Brady is usually around 2.7.

That’s funny. The guy I’ve seen on here spouting liberal takes on politics, medicated pete, got his facts wrong. Shocking!!

Oneilbuc: if you’re watching Jemele Hill and Talcum X propaganda then you’ve got way too much time
June 25th, 2021 at 1:50 pm
Westernbuc . You must have watched it as well. If you call that propaganda then ESPN , Fox , and everyone who speaks on any television show rather it’s sports are politics. Just like when a lot of yall were mad at Kap for kneeling during the national anthem. Just like your 4th of July when white people stole this country from the Indians and the British and you call it independence day while my people were slaves. And after you stole your independence then yall started kidnapping even more of my people. Facts !!!!
