Eyes new record?
A guy who sometimes drowns himself in stats believes Bucs fans should be paying attention to a certain passing stat as December nears.
Follically-challenged Billy Barnwell of BSPN, a spreadsheeter, reminded football fans there are 17 games this year — YAY! — and as a result the NFL record book could become a shambles.
Barnwell believes, with proper justification, the season record for passing yards (currently at 5,477) could be shattered by park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.
Barnwell does admit that’s a “long shot.“
It’s obviously not that easy to project Brady for a similar leap, but this will be after he gets a full offseason to work under Bruce Arians and with a full year of Antonio Brown playing alongside Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. I don’t think a 44-year-old Brady is setting the passing record, but who knows?
Barnwell makes a good point. Brady has unrivaled weapons. Who has a better, deeper stock of receivers and tight ends? It’s sick, man. Just given his weapons, Brady should toy with the record.
Barnwell also had another interesting point: The record was set in 2013 by Peyton Manning, and this came in his second season with the Broncos.
Guess what quarterback is now playing a second season with his team?

An entire season of AB and CG doing what they do after the catch.
I am wondering what the League Record for a teams Yards after the Catch is? That is the record that seems to be most in jeopardy in my humble opinion.
Now add in Mikes obligatory 1000 yard campaign with Miller and their over the top ball skills.
I mean is putting up an additional 1000 yards for Brady really that unrealistic? A measly extra 60 yards or so a game.
And if TB12 is gonna go for back to back Championships while chasing the perfect season that he so desires in order to hang up the cleats. Why stop at 5633 yards. Why not just hang 6000 plus on the league and pull a Marshawn Lynch TD leap as he walks off the stage in Canton! WEARING A BUCS HELMET!

Just so everyone can share the vision and have something to look for every game this year.
Brady needs to pass for 322.235294176471 yards per game to beat Mannings record by 1 yard. Yes that includes the extra game.
Just goes to show you how much of a Bad A$$ Payton was.

5000 yards and 50 TD’s is not out of the realm as a possibility. It is more a probability actually.
Brady had 40 tds and 4000+ and was not comfortable with the play book for much of the season lol
Including the postseason last year Brady had 50 TD’s and 5600+ yards, AT 43 YEARS OLD, let that sink in, in the COVID YEAR lol.
2020 was Brady’s 2nd best season statistically, again AT 43 lol
With nothing normal, and how you go about your preparation for the season and then during the season, let alone daily life off the field during a time of Covid turmoil.
So to me, 50TD’s and 5000 yards seems like a forgone conclusion, lol at 44 years old. The living legend Brady is SETTING the Modern Day Standard lol

I think the big obstacle this year is to keep players humble and focused. One, we just won the super bowl which is difficult enough to stay focused after (enough to repeat). Two, a lot of players made sacrifices last year to win a super bowl. Will the same players continue to be ok with losing snaps now that they have one? I’m hearing a lot of talk about personal goals this year which is ok, but I wonder is Rojo missed 1k yards this year by 50 yards, will he still be ok with it?? Time will tell!

Wow, this really is the season of speculation Joe. It’s quite a leap to expect that the Bucs will transform themselves offensively such that they exceed the performance of the 2013 Broncos, who BTW not only had the most PASSING YARDS ever as you noted, but they also scored the most POINTS ever (606 pts) and scored the most TDs ever (76). Those same 2013 Broncos came pretty close to accumulating the most TOTAL YARDS ever (record of 7,474 yds is owned by the 2011 Saints, so the 2013 Broncos only missed by 157 yds). Interestingly, the 2013 Broncos attempted 675 passes on the season, not all that close to the record of 740 passes attempted owned by the 2012 Lions.
So for Tom Brady to match those 2013 numbers put up by Peyton Manning, our 2021 offensive performance would have to look radically different from our 2020 performance. For starters, our 2020 Bucs had 1017 total plays; the 2013 Broncos had 1156 total plays (139 more plays in 16 games, or roughly 8.5 more plays per game average). That’s a bunch. 2020 Bucs scored 59 total TDs (42 passing/16 rushing/1 other); the 2013 Broncos scored 76 total TDs (55 passing/16 rushing/5 other). That’s about 1 TD/game more.
That’s a LOT of additional plays & scoring to make up. And especially when we’ve also got 3-4 very good running backs to feed with, oh ya, some running plays. But hey, no pressure Tom.

I don’t think we WANT him to set that record. He certainly has the weapons, but generally the league passing leaders are on losing teams. They’re throwing too much and playing catch up. I hope we are a little more balanced and can run out games in the second half

The Bucs seem OK to happy with the running backs on the team. We have some good, at times very good RB’s but nobody that we just turn and hand the ball to ala Derrick Henry.
We DO have GREAT…not just good…but GREAT WR’s….AB and ME have made their bones and CG14 is on his way. Toss in the TE’s…Gronk…OJ…Brate…and the two young guys with all the promise….we are beyond LOADED at WR and TE.
Our OL showed last year how well they can pass block for TB12.
The major off season addition was G Bernard who earns his money catching swing passes out of the backfield. Bernard’s numbers are also Brady’s numbers!
So a team that is clearly built to pass not run the ball, a coach who wants to throw the ball and an experienced QB who is going to be able to pick apart D’s…with targets from deep to intermediate to sure hands out of the backfield.
Brady is licking his chops! Yes the passing record is well within his reach and knowing Brady I wouldn’t’ be surprised if he wants to shatter it so his 17 game version holds up awhile.

The man will be 44 soon. Instead of passing records and perfect seasons, he and I only care about the rings. They need to set rushing and check down records.
Do you think in hindsight he’d rather be 15-1 superbowl champs in 07. As opposed to 18-1. Go talk to Teddy B. about that season. Teams need adversity, mercury morris can kick rocks and pound sand. They did it in fewer games, so it doesn’t mean anything.
I’d also worry about his legs. It’s the first thing to go, usually late in the season. Brady played with one leg in the title game, and the superbowl against the Giants. Pray for health and lots of handoff. In order to win, Bernard needs to set scrimmage yard records. Fans will be in the stands, they won’t go on the

I’m with you on that one Coburn. A strong running game can keep the defense off-balance and become a QB’s best friend. And I’d love to see the Bucs get up on team’s early this year so that Todd Bowles could really turn the dogs loose.
I know that Brady hates coming out of games, ever, but there’s a lot at stake when he stays in for the full 60 minutes if it’s not necessary. Obviously there’s a greater risk that he could get injured, but there’s also a greater risk that our OTHER starters will get injured (if we’re well ahead & he’s still in there, I seriously doubt that we’d be pulling our starting OLinemen & getting our backups playing time). The name of the game is WINNING, not setting records.

There’s nothing I would put past Brady doing. This could very well be his best season ever with the talent around him.

Wanna hear the voice of a 60 yr fan? I’ve watched all the greats play. Never have I heard “We gotta protect the QB” so many times That’s another example of just how good Tompa is. If you asked 100 sports writers to list the top 3 things the Bucs MUST DO to repeat, I guarantee all 100 will put that in the top 3 or even 1st. Remember what Brady did as soon as his team mate complained about not making the pro bowl? “Stop whining, it’s the Super Bowl we’re shooting for” I’m para-phrasing

We’ve seen times very recently where just passing for a load of yards didn’t translate to anything more than needing a new quarterback. Thank God.
While this is what media does to create hype and interest, I hope the players are thinking about one thing right now: Beating the Dallas Cowboys in the opener.

I dont see the yardage record going down this season. This team is likely to put more teams away earlier this season. Looking forward to watching them run out the clock in the 4th quarter- while the goat relaxes on the sidelines. Yes, this offense has the potential to fill the stat sheets, we just may not need it every game.

Why Brady won’t break any records this year …
