Rondé Barber’s Resume
June 19th, 2021How about Rondé Barber highlights for your early Saturday morning?
Pretty soon, Pro Football Hall of Fame selectors will be casting votes to determine the 2022 list of Hall candidates.
JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman will be in Canton this summer for the induction of the 2021 class that includes John Lynch. Perhaps he can bend some elbows to help change minds about Barber?
Sadly, a lot of folks believe Barber was a “system player.” Joe thinks this is absolutely a crock of crap.
Most players are system players. They play as part of a system. What, guys are supposed to freelance all the time … to please who, exactly?
Joe Montana was a system quarterback. He was perfect for Bill Walsh’s west coast offense. Does anyone believe Montana would have been half the player he was if he played for Don Coryell, who constantly threw the ball long? Or for Bill Parcells, who was a ground-and-pound coach?
Hell, Lawrence Taylor was a system player. If he didn’t play outside linebacker and had Parcells and Bill Belicheat not ordered him to blitz all the time, LT would not have been anywhere near the all-time star he became.
So Joe believes labeling Barber a “system player” is an absolute load.
Barber was a Hall of Fame finalist last year, meaning he among the 15 finalists “in the room.” That’s where all of the selectors gather the weekend of the Super Bowl to hammer out the final five who get in. So that was a good sign, as it gave Ira and other selectors a chance to make their pitch for Barber.
Often when a guy was a finalist but misses out on induction, it proves to be a precursor for future induction.

Barber has a bunch of amazing numbers. Correct me if I’m wrong Joe, but I think he has the most tackles of any DB in NFL history. If I am correct that is amazing considering he also has the most consecutive starts of any DB in NFL history. Barber = The Real Iron Man. He showed up to play every week and didn’t shy away from contact.

Barber was a unique player and his accomplishments speak for themselves. The fact that he was not a first ballot hall of famer speaks more to the lack of integrity (obviously not Ira and a handful of others) in the HOF voting process than anything Barber did or did not accomplish.
Unfortunately, like science, it seems like the HOF selection process will only advance one death (I do not advocate for anyone’s death) at a time, before the “good ole boy” clique has gone on to their next adventure.

Agree joe. Some players excel under diff systems so technically everyone is a system guy. Barber not only covered and tackled well he made big plays and check out his sacks for a DB all around a great player and teammate. Even switched to safety in the final years in Tampa right ? Obviously I have a biased take because him and Kelly killed it the year we won the SB. still think he should get him

Ronde shutting down the Vet back in January 2002 was probably the most thrilling moment I had as a Buc fan since 1976, this was just one highlight of so many. Ira got to present him last year along with Lynch so this year might be the year. I think Buczilla makes a good point in that certain writers may have agendas that have them vote for certain players from certain media markets who may not be as deserving as Ronde or some of the other finalists who are not from the old school major markets…. Hopefully Ira can twist enough arms to get the man a golden jacket and a ticket to Canton in 2022!

If Barber was a cowboy he would’ve been first ballot. Joe’s 100% right about systems. His time will come, but the politics are keeping him out
June 19th, 2021 at 6:49 am
Remember when Bucs were in the old “Norris Division” & Barber had to cover Randy Moss, Chris Carter & all the great weapons Brett Favre had? Ronde was solid as a rock
June 19th, 2021 at 7:33 am
They use the term “system player” as an excuse to discredit. The stats don’t lie boys. Barber was the best and is more than worthy to represent the HOF!
June 19th, 2021 at 7:35 am
Barber was one of the best tackling CBs with great hips. He he was a twin, he could play RB.
June 19th, 2021 at 8:30 am
Yeah, the system made all those plays. SMDH!! Incredible ball skills and instincts! GO World Champion BUCS!!!
June 19th, 2021 at 8:40 am
“Journalists” use the term “system player” when they know that the person they’re dealing with is more than qualified but they need to justify their homer-vote that they’re going to cast.
June 19th, 2021 at 9:00 am
He will get in. Sooner or later he will.
June 19th, 2021 at 9:35 am
So if you are the originator of a system. Meaning THERE IS NO SYSTEM WITHOUT YOU. What does that mean?
Sapp, Brooks, Lynch and Barber = The System, “Tampa 2”
UMMMMM not only will he get in but he will have an EPIC induction speech that will pickoff the attention of the A.D.D. crowd. Tackle the narrative of the media that says he is a system CB and SACK the hearts of future generations to come!
Can’t wait to hear your speech Mr. Barber.
“Who’s your favorite player”, Mr. Ronde Barber!!!
June 19th, 2021 at 9:35 am
Was that an EJ Biggers sighting?
June 19th, 2021 at 9:56 am
3 Pick sixes on McNabb is hilarious. And was that 2 in one game? LMAO! Sure the Championship game will always be sketched into our brains but I didn’t know he had two more. I must have have missed that game before Sunday Ticket and internet was available to me. That was great!
June 19th, 2021 at 10:27 am
@ClodHopper I was at that game. In those days the 12th Man experience was insane. Almost like we got to be on the field with them. You just could feel the vibe every snap like something big was about to happen.
OH HOW I MISS THAT FEELING. Might it be back this year? I hope so cause I am tired of lazy cry baby fans. Mine as well stay home with that Spit
June 19th, 2021 at 10:43 am
I just sent it to my Eagle fan friend and said, “I don’t who’s highlight reel this is, Barber or McNabb. They both make so many appearances.” I haven’t heard back yet. LOL
June 19th, 2021 at 11:50 am
That was just a teaser highlight reel.
His full highlight reel takes about an hour or more to view.
June 19th, 2021 at 11:56 am
It would be nice to see our Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Bucs have a corner that can take these ints to the house.
Ronde could blitz and cover and did it while being ask to play Tampa 2. Been a lot of players to play that Tampa 2 and doesn’t have Ronde’s numbers.
June 19th, 2021 at 5:21 pm
“System players” take care of their responsibility and do it consistently.
Ronde OTOH was a “playmaker”. And not just his picks but his versatility, especially in his later years when the Bucs turned him loose. He was good for a couple of sacks a year and he averged five QB hits a season for a three year stretch.
“System Player” seems silly to me. Ronde was as versatile as any DB we’ve had. And Ronde may have been the smartest DB we’ve ever had…I know Lynch comes in a close second but I always felt Lynch was looking to deliver a message where Ronde was looking to delivery a game changing play.
June 19th, 2021 at 7:42 pm
He’ll make it. May take a few years but he’ll make it.
June 19th, 2021 at 8:05 pm
Only cb to have more than 25 sacks and 40 ints ever
28 sacks and 47 ints that alone should get him in
June 19th, 2021 at 8:44 pm
PREACH!
Barber has numbers on the INTs and Sacks that no other CB ever had had.
Not to mentions, SB winner, 5x pro bowls, 3x all-pros, etc.
It’s a no brained. Get it done Ira!
June 19th, 2021 at 10:40 pm
He might not have that gold jacket yet but it’s only a matter of time he gets in but ronde did shut the vet down with his pick6 I’ll never forget that play
June 19th, 2021 at 11:49 pm
Ronde was the prototypical football player, tough, instinctive, play maker, intelligent and a quality sportsman. The fact that a no heart, poor sport, no wanna tacklin Peyonne Sanders made it because of his flash shows somewhat of the hall has its bogus points just like the pro bowl. Ronde deserves to be in the hall hands down, he has the stats to support it!
June 20th, 2021 at 12:03 am
I forgot which game but he had 3 ints in a game and would’ve had a fourth if Dexter Jackson hadn’t ripped it out of his hands so he could have a start stat. Ronde was truly “JOHNNYON THESPOT” !!!
June 20th, 2021 at 10:54 am
Let’s entertain the arguement that Ronde is a system guy. Fine. Then show me a guy within that system that produced the numbers that he did. Ther are no comparisons in my opinion so that arguement can be flipped to support Ronde’s credentials.
June 20th, 2021 at 1:10 pm
WARREN SAPP
DERRICK BROOKS
JOHN LYNCH
WERE ALL SYSTEM PLAYERS TOO
GTFOH
June 21st, 2021 at 3:59 am
Agree with Buczilla, The fact that he was not a first ballot hall of famer is a travesty. There should be no discussion if Ronde is a HoF because there is not one valid or sane argument as to why he is not. Simple as that.
June 22nd, 2021 at 10:25 pm
Barber and Rice both should get in. Ridiculous Simeon can’t even make a ballot
