Chris Godwin Enters NFL Elite Group
June 4th, 2021Joe thought Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht robbed his NFL colleagues blind on the night Tampa Bay drafted receiver Chris Godwin.
Joe vividly remembers how Godwin, then playing for Penn State, torched Adoree’ Jackson, then of USC, in the Rose Bowl. Jackson was a first-round pick of the Titans at No. 18 overall.
And Godwin was still sitting there in the third round? Wow.
Godwin has been a baller since he came to Tampa Bay (once he figured out how to tackle his allergies that flared up badly in the west-central Florida climate).
Godwin’s name jumped to the top of the NFL’s receivers when Bucco Bruce Arians came to town and had Godwin line up often at slot. Boom!
And even though Godwin was hobbled by a broken finger last season, no less of an authority than prickly Pete Prisco of CBS Sports has Godwin listed at No. 59 in his annual Top-100 list.
He played just 12 games last season, so his numbers dropped from the previous year. He still caught 65 passes with seven touchdowns. He did fracture a finger that seemed to slow his fast start last season.
Joe heard through the grapevine that Godwin’s broken finger and subsequent surgery to put pins in his digit was much more severe than previously known.
Yeah, Godwin had a sudden case of the dropsies in the playoffs, but anyone remember that damn tough catch of a bomb down the middle of the field he hauled in against the Packers? Clutch!
Godwin has proven to be one of the best receivers in the game, not just for getting open and racking up yards, but he rarely drops the ball.
When is the last time the Bucs had a third-round pick that turned out to be this good? Rondé Barber?

Well deserved.
I want to see him and Evans together with Miller and Johnson until Evans retires! Lock Godwin up and long-term next year!

I can’t think of a better all around WR in the NFL. He is so sick in the slot and such a good blocker. Is it so crazy to move AB to the outside for a year? I guess that would mess with a Godwin contract year.

Godwin is going no where. He be locked up eventually. Johnson will be around also for at least the next 3 years. I suspect Miller will be the one that plays one more year here, 2 at most. The small amount of plays that Miller makes and the certain plays that he may help us on are small to the amount of plays that he hurts us on by defenses not having to respect him other than the deep ball. Miller has dropped to at least our 6th receiver, and with some of the guys who are performing extremely well in Camp, the Bucs may use his spot to carry a different receiver who can do more than one thing.

AB is an outside receiver, and will take most of his snaps outside. He moves around like all receivers in a BA offense, but he’s mostly an outside guy.

Godwin was 66% in the slot and Antonio 21% last year–I wouldn’t wxpect that to change much, unless to accomodate Darden. So AB is 80% outside already.

Wasn’t Myron Lewis a third rounder?

Redblud apparently doesn’t know who the Bucs quarterback is, or what he and his coaches think of Miller. Redblud takes the short bus as usual.

Although, Arians likes certain receivers to play a particular role, they’re all capable of being moved around like chess pieces in response to coverage schemes of opposing defenses. It keeps defenses off balance. I don’t think there’s a better all-round receiving corps (including TEs) in the NFL. Throw in AB and Bernard this year and it will definitely keep opposing coaches awake at night.

I know exactly who Miller is and what he means to Tom, and apparently it’s not much. Miller is not a good receiver by any means. He has value on the right team, but even that value is not much. He may be the absolute worse route runner in the NFL and has only three routes total he can be effective on. He can’t make anyone miss in the open field. Other than his occasional deep ball, he adds nothing to this team. His fan boys are going to be surprised when he rarely sees the field in 2021. I personally will be glad when he’s gone so this overhype can go away.

Ever notice when ever A. Brown scored or made a great catch Chris was there to give him props. No ego. I like that.

That great catch over the middle looked great because he was kinda dogging the route until he realized Brady let it fly. He had to burst to the ball and get to where he shoulda been easily.
He clearly did not expect the pass because he dropped the easy catch on the play right before that one. He almost blew his second opportunity. I would expect him to never doubt he may get it at anytime even after drops.

LOL, USC was not the only team he torched in College!
I was Glad to see him leave College, because he torched my Michigan Wolverines way too often!
I was shocked to see him still there, when we picked.
Hard to believe so many teams passed on him.
Glad he is a Tampa Bay Buc!

Redblud, how much mescaline do you ingest in your regular dose? Did you forget and double down?
Miller was on pace for over 900 yards and 50 receptions last year over the first 8 games. Then AB arrived. No one would mistake Scotty for AB, but you could say that about damn near every number 3 and even number 2 receiver in the league, let alone further down the WR food chain. So AB took the majority of Scooter’s snaps. Go back and watch the first 8 games. Miller caught quite a few possesion passes. Na don’t do it, stay ignorant about him, and keep talking. The world needs more village idiots. You can prove to be worthy as one.

He did get a little case of the dropsies in the playoffs… not sure if it was nerves or some lingering effects from the surgery… or both.
Either way I expect big things from him this season and an even better post season performance.
