So a week ago there was little question who was the better of the two quarterbacks practicing at Bucs voluntary OTA practices.
Ryan Griffin, to Joe, looked so much better than rookie Kyle Trask. But as Joe pointed out last week, that’s to be expected. Trask probably had to keep looking at a roster like the reporters who were watching to know the players on the field.
Thrown in that Griffin is entering his third season using Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians’ playbook — and Trask was not even entering his third month — Griffin should have looked and practiced better.
By yesterday, the gap had narrowed. And Arians seemed content with Trask’s progress in the very early stages of his career.
“Yeah, it’s not easy when you’re going against our defense,” Arians said. “He has seen a multitude of coverages and blitzes, so I’m really impressed.
“Having worked with guys for the first time in this offense, he’s at the top of the list as far as the learning curve and he’s throwing the football really well.”
That wasn’t the case a week ago, but again, Trask was throwing to strangers using a foreign playbook. What do you expect?
It seems like Arians is very impressed with what is above Trask’s shoulders. Arians compared him — in a way — to one of the smarter quarterbacks in recent NFL history, a guy Arians also coached as a rookie. That would be Andrew Luck.
“Mentally, [Kyle Trask] isn’t far behind what Andrew did in the same offense,” Arians said. “What Andrew did that year was unbelievable. I’m not saying he is Andrew Luck, but mentally he is really, really sharp.”
Look, Trask is a developmental quarterback. The Bucs likely won’t be calling his number until the retirement of park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.
And who knows when that will be?
Let’s be real: If Trask is starting a game this fall, in the words of Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, the Bucs are in a world of s(p)it.

Hey, that what we thought back in 1999/2000 when the third string QB named Shaun King came in after QB1 and QB2 went down with injuries. QB3 almost led us to the promise land and who knows if it wasn’t for the refs call of a Bert Emanuel thievery of a no catch, Bucs history is slightly different. Not saying I want to see Kyle Trask, but anything can happen in a long season

I’m really excited to see Gio on 3rd downs! Also, I have a “sneaking” suspicion that Vaughn is going to make some noise this season. He’s just too talented to not be active.

I said this before Kyle Trask reminds me ALOT of Andrew Luck.. accuracy and how quickly he processes.

Just keep working kid. We have competent back-ups and should not “need” to throw this guy to the wolves.

1. Are you a UF fan, Joe? If not, who’s your college team? I’d really like to be able to put these Trask articles into perspective. Obviously there are tons of Gator fans posting.
2. Arians is the biggest bullspiter in the NFL (except when he tells guys they’re returning). Andrew Luck? Seriously? After two non back breaking voluntary workouts?

Watching him last season, Trask can go through his progressions pretty fast and has a strong arm, but seemed to be inaccurate on deep balls and had limited mobility. It will be interesting to see if he can elude nfl rushers. I don’t think he will ever be as good as Andrew Luck, but time will tell. Yes I’m a Gator fan, but not all in on Trask.

I agree Pittman’s biceps were insane. I tried do hard to get my arms like his. Needless to say it didn’t work lol. I can’t believe his son is in the nfl. Man time flies doesn’t it.
