More Perfect-Season Chatter

How good are the Bucs?

Joe has maintained many times on The Ira Kaufman Podcast that the 2021 offense, with Antonio Brown for a full season and Tom Brady minus a learning curve, could be the best in NFL history.

Seriously. The best offense ever.

Brown, Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Mike Evans and Tristan Wirfs may all be enshrined as Hall of Fame players one day.

The 2013 Broncos averaged an NFL-record 37.9 points per game, but they averaged just 18 points per game in the playoffs that season.

Last year, the Bucs put up 37 points per game after their bye week and averaged a whopping 30.75 points through four playoff games.

Would anyone be stunned if the Bucs challenged the record of those 2013 Broncos?

Below is a list of teams with the highest points-per-game average through the last 11 seasons.

Think about it. The Bucs’ receiving corps is upgraded with Brown available a full season and young guns Scotty Miller and Tyler Johnson now having valuable experience. The young running backs are more seasoned and the Bucs added dynamic veteran RB Giovani Bernard. The defense is on a roll. And maybe, just maybe, the Bucs found a better punt returner in rookie Jaelon Darden.

For Joe, barring injuries, that easily could add up to one more touchdown per game.

2020 Tampa Bay 30.8, Green Bay 31.5, Buffalo 29.9.
2019 Ravens 33.2, 49ers 29.9
2018 Chiefs 35.3, Rams 32.9, Saints 31.5
2017 Rams 29.9
2016 Falcons 33.8
2015 Panthers 31.3, Cardinals 30.6
2014 Packers 30.4, Broncos 30.1
2013 Broncos 37.9
2012 Patriots 34.8, Broncos 30.1
2011 Packers 35.0, Saints, 34.2, Patriots, 32.1
2010 Patriots 32.4

Former Bucs QB Chris Simms, now a premier NBC Sports analyst, spoke on PFT Live today after co-host Mike Florio hinted at the Bucs being in position to gun for a perfect season. Simms was adamant that the Bucs are on the rise, rather than being a little stale after being with the same head coach for a bunch of years.

And Simms noted the team’s late-season improvement and no learning curve with everyone returning for 2021, as well as Bucco Bruce Arians not being a coach that will drag the Bucs down by adding pressure.

Joe’s not screaming for a perfect season. It’s unrealistic. But it’s certainly not unrealistic for fans to be treated to the greatest offense known to man.

Win the opener against Dallas. Then there’s 10 days before the next game. Then win that. Then win the division. No need for undefeated talk. Brady will likely miss some games due to injury, someone will purposely hit him late to take him out. It’s gonna happen.

I hope we can train one of our backup O-Linemen to be the enforcer so that Jensen doesn’t get tossed from the game for retaliating.

  2. Bucluck Says:

Joe, I would like our defense to be the record breakers and let the offense repeat last years output and then the Super Bowl is in reach.

  3. 813bucboi Says:

    LETS GO!!!!!!!

    I LUV IT!!!!

    the new BUCS standard!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  4. Cobraboy Says:

    Chatter about “perfect” is bothersome.

Win the division and secure HFA through the playoffs is a better goal.

    14-3/13-4 should get it done.

  5. Kobe Faker Says:

“Our defense is only effective with a great push/pass rush from the Dline

without the pass rush our corners are exposed

Kobe was adamant why we didnt draft a 2nd round shutdown cornerback

Kobe Faker is always ahead of the curve”

    Kobe Faker

  6. Cobraboy Says:

@Swampbuc: Jensen would prolly get arrested for voluntary manslaughter if that happened…

  7. Cobraboy Says:

Kobe ay be “ahead of the curve”, but thing is that curve is always wrong…

  8. Ron says Says:

The objective is to win another SB and not lose focus, then next year if we could do it again we will have set our own untouchable mark which we will be able to break out the champagne from year to year. If we stay focus throughout the year we will accomplish the real goal and have a chance to be elite.

  9. Jerry Says:

Opening line is the Bucs 6.5 pt favorites over Dallas.

  10. Robert Says:

The bye last year came at a perfect time. Small chance that will happen again.

    We’ll lose 4-5

  11. TampaTown Says:

Can we start the talk about a perfect season when we’re I don’t know? 13/14/15-0?

  12. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Not “likely” we go undefeated, but plausible for the first time in our history…

  13. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

49 years since dolphins perfect season its about time for another Florida team to duplicate the feat

  14. Buc4evr Says:

Way too early to look that far ahead and even talking about it is really bad karma. Bucs need to focus on one game at a time. I’m sure Brady will be.

  15. Tye Says:

Even harder now that they have added another game to the season BUT if anyone has a chance at doing it, the Bucs are the best on paper!

  16. USFBUC Says:

I know it would be special to do but as a fan I will take another Super Bowl with a few losses too

  17. Casual Observer Says:

Joe is right to enthuse over this O roster. Loaded everywhere. As long as Brady is healthy, a good chance to set those scoring records. What a bunch (as Joe notes) of star players. Brady has so many weapons – and he knows how to use them better than anyone. Incredible seasons coming up.

  18. Buczilla Says:

The best offense ever is certainly doable (it’s crazy to even type that!) if one of our running backs has a career year. It’s a solid group, but defensive coordinators aren’t sweating into the wee hours of the night thinking of ways to stop Rojo and Lenny.

  19. Robert Says:

If ANYONE can keep the teams head focused and make it happen it is TB.

Maybe that’s one of his goals. Perfect season,-with a SB and a ring on each finger!

  20. HeyItsAdam Says:

    Win the South.

    Stay healthy.

    Play playoff games at home.

And most importantly, FILL THE DAMN STADIUM TO CAPACITY.

  21. Steven007 Says:

I think we find a way to lose four games, five perhaps if injuries are an issue. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it was less.

  22. K2 Says:

Brady is not going to be talking about an undefeated season. He’s going to do his best to block all the noise of over-excited fan base. The Bucs better focus on getting better every practice and put all their attention on 1 game at a time. If they want to at least get to a winning season and into the playoffs.

  23. geno711 Says:

Kobe Faker’s curve in the past:

    “Sooner or later
People and teams get tired of BAs act
Arizona future is finally looking up and they sure dont miss the BA/BL twins whatsoever
There will be a offseason power struggle after our 8-8 season

  24. PSL Bob Says:

No it’s not likely that we go undefeated in 2021, but it is certainly possible, and not like anything is possible. Not like winning the lotto is possible. This is 17 games with a relatively weak schedule. If Joe is right about how this offense could be historically good, then why not think this could be the best team in the history of the NFL? Only bad luck and injuries to key players are in the way. I know, one game at a time, but I certainly don’t think it’s crazy to think about a perfect season. I know Tom Brady doesn’t either.

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You won’t find too many fans more optimistic than TBBF…..but I must say….I’d like to see us go 1-0 before we start talking about a perfect season….I’ll bet that Tom Brady agrees with me.

  26. Swampbuc Says:

Kobe Faker — if all the village idiots left their villages and went to create a new village, Kobe Faker would be the village idiot.

  27. stephen j burke Says:

If we could only find another Earl Morrall…..

  28. Hope springs eternal Says:

One game at a time is the attitude the Bucs need to maintain. Looking ahead can get you beat.

  29. jamestb03 Says:

Swampbuc, you made me spit out my lunch! Nice one.

  30. Beeej Says:

If there’s some place to place a $50 bet for them to win out, I’m gonna do it

  32. chris L Says:

joe – while i agree with the assessment on the # of points scored, we have to consider the fact that we really did well in turning turnovers into touchdowns. especially in the playoffs. if i am not mistaken every game we got a turnover we turned it into 7 points except for the super bowl interception at end of game and winfield’s pick when it was 28-9 where we got a field goal.

the new orleans game all of our touchdowns came on turnovers.

while our offense can do great things and should, those turnovers drive a big part of that and if that were to drop off, so could points. same thing with looking at points against. prior years we had bad defenses but hard to do much when we gave the ball away like candy.

hopefully our defense feasts again but i said it before and i will say it again, the two most important stats in football that determine wins in a very high percentage is: red zone touch down efficiency and turnovers. two places the bucs did great in on their glorious run.

  33. SteveK Says:

    This. Would. Be. Crazy!

The ultimate mic drop in sports history. Brady could walk it off, having won 28 games in a row.

I hope he would come back, but at arhat point what else is there to prove?

  34. windbaggery Says:

Kinda ridiculous to talk about this shyte. Every week is a battle and if you look past anybody, they’ll bite you and you’ll look like a fool. We should be favored in most games and we should win most of them. Any statements beyond that are delusional.

  35. Long time Brady fan says Says:

Whenever the Boston media got over the tips of their skies about how the Pat’s couldn’t lose an upcoming game inevitably they loss the game. Especially when Gerry Callahan of WEEI thought there was no way the could lose.

  36. SlyPirate Says:

I don’t think any team is better than the Bucs.

I don’t think any team should beat the Bucs.

I don’t believe the Bucs go undefeated.

  37. Darin Says:

Cmon dont get too high or low. The undefeated talk is as bad as the den of depression. Starting to think someones bipolar. Someone in particular

  38. mark2001 Says:

geno.. nice faker burn. Facts are stubborn things…especially when they are in print.

  39. Defense Rules Says:

@Cobraboy … “Chatter about “perfect” is bothersome.”

@Buc4evr … “Way too early to look that far ahead and even talking about it is really bad karma.”

@K2 … “Bucs better focus on getting better every practice and put all their attention on 1 game at a time.”

@PSLBob … “it’s not likely that we go undefeated in 2021, but it is certainly possible, and not like anything is possible.”

@Darin … “Cmon dont get too high or low. The undefeated talk is as bad as the den of depression.”

Seems to be a trend here & elsewhere: ‘More Perfect-Season Chatter’ is just that … CHATTER … and IDLE CHATTER at that. On any given Sunday, anything can happen. Take it one game at a time because every week will be a dogfight.

  41. David Says:

Since just days after the Super Bowl I have been saying they should score 35+ points per game while giving up on average fewer than 18. That may sound high for the defense but not in today’s NFL.
