Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner knows a lot about sitting on a bench and exploding to greatness when your number is called.
Warner’s story is incredible (and his move is finally coming out within a year).
On Sunday, Warner hopped on SiriusXM NFL Radio and explained why new Bucs QB Kyle Trask, their 2021 second-round pick, found a great fit for himself but not necessarily the Bucs.
Warner said Trask was the eighth-best QB on his draft board — Trask was the sixth QB selected. He talked a lot about how Trask’s arm strength doesn’t match his stature.
”He’s such a big guy that I was always surprised when I watched film that the ball didn’t come off like I expected it to with a big guy,” Warner explained.
Trask’s lack of mobility was a topic for Warner but he acknowledged Trask has good touch and was a good all-around player.
As Joe mentioned, Warner was all about how Trask landed in the best possible situation being able to watch Tom Brady every day. He made no mention of Bucs coaches.
Overall, Warner gave a great talk about how ”’99 percent of all throws will be 40 yards or less”’ and that the key is having great velocity to make those throws on demand.

Warner makes a great point about the vast majority of passes being quite a bit less than bombs. And Trask has actually shown a good propensity to drop those in there with nice touch and a very catchable ball. I haven’t seen enough highlights of him throwing out passes with adequate velocity, that’s my only concern. But that’s also incumbent largely on the receiver running the right route. I’m looking at you Justin Watson…

Looks like the Trask pick will overshadow the Bucs 21 draft for many…..not me…..he’s a developmental backup and it may be years before we know how it turns out.
Why would we trust Brady, Licht, BA and our coaches on everything else but not on this pick?

Of the 194 QB’s drafted outside the top 40 picks in the last 20 years, just 9 of them went on to be productive starters at any point in their career. And of those 9, 3 went on to either win a SB or become a franchise QB. And 1 of them became the greatest QB of all time.
People like to say that the draft is a crap shoot and prospects have 50-50 shot of working out. But that isn’t the case for QB’s taken late in the draft.
Kyle Trask essentially has a 4% chance to ever become at least a productive, serviceable starter. and 1.5% chance to win a Super Bowl as a starter or become a franchise QB.
But hey, it’s ok Bucs fans. We can always hold on to the 0.05% chance that Trask is the next Tom Brady…

Kurt Warner’s story is one of the great ones in all NFL history. Backup at the University of Northern Iowa for a while. Nobody wanted him and he bounced around to different rookie camps. Was sacking groceries (true story) in Cedar Rapids when he got “the call”. And what a rookie year he had – like no other. I wonder what the scouting reports were on him at the draft? Not very good, I’ll bet. But he had something intangible (like Brady?). Like we all hope Trask has. My bet is on Trask to succeed at the pace the Bucs, and all their fine staff, have laid out for him.

I mean he is throwing 35-45 yards for tds and doing it on a dime rope. Doesnt look like he is putting to much work into it
With that said , my bro is a gator. He watched every game. He is not sure trask will be a good pro. And thought trask round 2 draft was early.

Again , this is not younger brady when he balked at trying to help out his competition. This is senior citizen brady and he realizes what he just accomplished taking the bucs from the outhouse to the White House has completed and solidified his legendary storied carrier. Shoot if trask is smart he should ask to work out with brady and his trainer. Brady’s arm and athletic ability was questioned coming out of draft. I mean he was 6th round for crying out loud.

It’s a project! We’ve got to have a little confidence that the honchos at Bucs HQ know what they’re doing. It will take a little time for things to sort out. If it works, great. If it doesn’t, we grab another QB in FA or a future draft. At least they’re giving it a shot.

Someone observed that his lack of velocity comes from improper use of the “lower unit” – legs and hips. If it’s fixable it will be fixed or they’ll kill him trying.
I still think he projects more like a Danny Wuerrfel than anyone, but Wuerrfel only had Spurrier who was not going to take the time necessary to fix Danny. Kyle hopefully gets put in a cage and not allowed to come out until he’s fixed.

they say to never try to step in the shoes of a great man, so trask is gonna be hated unless hes a hof player. he sure has triggered a lot of talk though.
hes about as good as the bucs could hope for with respect to that somewhat thankless task. you have to be humble, which he is, independent of football for the crap he must endure. after brady its gonna be hard for the bucs to be as good, hes got to take the blame. young qbs in tampa usually turn out better after they leave.
i can argue trask’s good points until im blue in the face, some people are just going to want to hate the guy, and that sells newspapers too. we will see on the field whose right, but i still think it was the best pick under the circumstances

This draft could have changed our franchise. This draft could have built depth for years to come.
Trask? Why? Brady has two years left. We have a great defense. If Brady got hurt would you prefer a rookie or a vet to team up with our defense.
We needed 2 more D-lineman.
2nd round- DT, NT, or DE (like Gholston- huge and strong)
3rd round- OLB with freakish speed. (Backup for Barret)
4th round- CB or S

After reading like 10 takes on Trask from various sources…I’m still not convinced they needed to draft a QB in the 2nd. I would have preferred depth in other areas, rather than wait on a maybe he might turn out to be a good QB.

I don’t follow college football so I have no real say in it anyway. But what I don’t want to hear is all the armchair GM’s telling me how good and bad this QB is because of the school he attended. Or after the Jameis Pro Ready crap. When you run a pro team, work in their front office or coach on the team or been a pro player I will listen. Other then that I will leave the decisions up to the team. Everything else is opinion until he gets on the field and proves otherwise.

We have a cost effective backup at minimum. Trask may or may not become the starter. Sure beats five long years with a #1 overall QB who didn’t pan out either. The price, time and and draft equity make me ok w this pick. And I think it’s so funny to see the Jameis apologists out in full naysaying force.
Just as those naysayer Tom Brady, and he proved them wrong with a cold hard super bowl, they will naysay Trask bc he is not from FSU and bc he is not Jameis. Some folks really rooted for the college team and the QBs from the college team, as opposed to rooting for a super bowl. Go Bucs.

Joe is glad you come here often. But you must remember, Joe writes about what interests Joe, and Joe runs a thriving business, not a newspaper. People are excited/angry about the Bucs drafting a quarterback who is scheduled to be Tom Brady’s successor and who also played for the most popular college program in the state.
And when a Hall of Fame player talks about a guy on the Bucs roster who played the same position as the Hall of Fame player, Joe is sure as hell not going to ignore it.

There are over 40,000 stories posted on this site. If you don’t want to read about Kyle Trask, that’s both fine and understandable. No one is forcing you to read anything. There are plenty of stories here about all manner of Bucs topics not connected to Kyle Trask.

My difficulty with all of this is that I didn’t think we needed to draft a QB in round 2 or at all this year…..
I would really have preferred a CB.
As for Trask over Mills or Mond….I’ll leave that to others…..but I refuse to let the fact that I didn’t want a QB bias me against Trask.

Ding ding ding! Finally the real reason why Kyle Trask was actually drafted. Smells like a Glazer decision to me.
Now before anyone starts with the accusatory bull crap. Literally the only college football I watch is when I watch tape/cut ups on youtube so that I have a good idea of who I like and don’t like going into the draft. So no, I am by no means an FSU fan or a fan of any college sports team.
But honestly the only way I can rationalize the selection of Trask in my head is that the Glazers know how many rabid Gators fans there are that are also Bucs fans, and they drafted this guy to sell more tickets knowing that we didn’t have any major holes to fill outside of depth and special teams.

Hopefully his arm strength can be improved with mechanics but having the touch required and processing ability are more important to me after having a first overall quarterback with a rocket for an arm but could read defenses and set records for interceptions. Maybe he won’t be a franchise quarterback but hopefully by the time it matters the coaches will realize

Bucs signed an undrafted kicker from Miami. Jorge Borregales. Groza award winner for best kicker in college 2020. There is a good chance he beats out Succop.

For a team that has Tom Brady as their starting quarterback and are raining Super bowl champs, I am a certain as you are that they did it to sell tickets, that they actually did not factor that into this decision. We don’t need Kyle Trask to sell Bucs tickets. That’s ludicrous.

i think the difference here for trask compared to many other rookie qbs is he knows he is not playing for at least 2 years. he has a chance to work on his craft with no pressure. Also if you watch his highlights you can see he is able to go through his reads quickly which is more important then arm strength. manning and brees didnt have the strongest arms. brad Johnson had very poor arm strength and won us a super bowl. and my gosh with the mobility stuff. he can still move around and even score touchdowns with his feet. everybody is looking for vick smh.

Go Bucs, Go Trask. If he is a good QB, great. If he is not, simply get anorher one. But trask has plenty of upside. We will see. To say it was a waste to pick Trask in the 2nd round, we will find out. But if the Bucs brass liked him enough to draft him. Then I am good with it. I haven’t seen or read anything that makes me feel better about this pick. From the video I watched, he’s gotta get a quicker release and throw with more velocity or he will be very limited. Can the QB incubator accomplish that? If so, his lack of mobility is less of an issue.

Without Winfield Jr.-the Bucs likely don’t win the SB in 2020. Will never like the pick given the Go for 2 mantra. Coming off an 8-8 with a mediocre QB maybe…but not now. I’m convinced the next Buc starting QB will come via free agency.

I really dont get whats upsetting people so much. We are gonna need a QB in the near future. So we drafted Trask now we got one option.
1 option is better then zero in mine opinion. And QB is kinda a important position……And if Trask dont work out they will know it by next draft. They can buy themselves another option if they like somebody.
Would yall rather we wait til we are desperate for a new QB and just hope it works out? We seen that play out in the 2015 draft and both teams that took QBs at the top of the draft went belly up. The following year two more teams drafted QB in desperate need and both teams went belly up.
The Bucs plan to stay ahead by developing a QB ahead of time probably has a much better success rate then drafting for one when your desperate.

It seems like the “Trask’s arm strength is not good” or “he does not have enough velocity on the ball” and lets not forget “he is not mobile enough” all forget who the Bucs current QB is.
Those traits can be compensated for, not saying Trask will; but lets give the kid a chance before we judge him.

NEWSFLASH:
We wasted a 2nd round pick on a KICKER that turned out to be a bust and the team STILL MOVED ON and won a Super Bowl.
I think we’ll be just fine if Trask doesn’t pan out. All draft picks are a RISK.

No on has promised Trask “the reigns” as Tom Brady’s heir apparent when Brady retires. He will have to EARN IT. If he’s not good enough, then he won’t takeover. We’ll turn to someone else.
He was one pick away from being a 3rd rounder. Big whoop. He has a great potential UPSIDE and is a risk like all QB prospects. How many 1st Round QBs don’t pan out? For those crying about Trask, be grateful we didn’t spend a high 1st round pick on a QB in this draft.

Let’s say for arguement sake that Brady plays for two more years. Let’s say his final year the team makes it to the second round of the playoffs and loses and he decides to retire. Now the Bucs are picking somewhere in the mid-late 20’s and there isn’t a QB to draft there, but maybe you have an opportunity to move up in the draft by giving up at least two future 1st round picks plus some change for, in most years, the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th rated QB in that given draft, and in that year it’s a weak QB class?
Is the prospect of that situation more appealing to you?
Or how about this, a couple years before that situation they used the last pick in the 2nd round on a QB that they liked and could put some extra time into because they already had a championship quality team ready made to win now. So in your back pocket you have a QB that you’ve been grooming behind the best QB in NFL history for two years.
Nothing is a sure thing, but having options sure is nice. I have no idea if Trask will be good. Neither do you. What I do know is given the timing and situation, he might have just as good a chance or better as the crap shoot idea of giving future picks for another unproven college QB two or three years from now.
For every Pat Mahomes there are probably five or six Mitch Trubisky, Josh Rosen, Robert Griffen…….yadayadayada you get the idea.
I wouldn’t have picked Trask either for the record, but I also think this was a weak draft class at many other positions so taking a flyer on, at the very least, a solid backup plan isn’t the worst idea.

So funny. I just have to wonder how many of these posters ever predicted that Arians would work his magic, give Jameis the boot, and find a way to get Brady here? How many thought Licht was washed up, Arians was washed up, and Brady were washed up? How many predicted a SB was right around the corner? You would think those without accuracy in the previous things might believe a little faith and humility might be in order. But no. Instead, all is forgotten. And we can now be experts and micro-analyze every pick and decision they make. LOL.
As Licht, Arians, Moore, Lefty, Clyde and likely Tom all signed off on the pick, I’m fine with it and interested in seeing how he develops.

BTW… not saying Trask will end up being a good QB. I don’t think he has the tools some guys like Brady and Rodgers have/had.
But I do remember that when we drafted the Caddy, Rodgers fell way down the board in the first round because he had poor mechanics, among some other speculated flaws.
And we all know Brady’s draft history.
So I’d say, let’s just see how it plays out with Trask. We may all be pleasantly surprised.

Nobody is ever talking about the length a Qb can throw the ball. That’s easy. They’re always talking about velocity. Fans often get this wrong. Think of the 7 yard out pass pick sixes thrown by Brady and Winston in recent years.

I think it is possible, and something I haven’t heard mentioned is that the bucs and Brady know that Giselle has put her foot down and told Tom that if they win or make the super bowl that the `what else do you have to prove` comment will become reality , surely one of the richest women in the world , believes it is time to move on . So maybe this is why he was drafted he may only have one year to sit. Any of you married guys out there knows what a mad wife can do? Enough said.

I am a life long Gators fan who watched every single snap Trask took in his career at UF. I will not be at all surprised if he has a successful career here. He has plenty of arm strength and can make all the NFL required throws. He has excellent pocket presence and touch, makes fast decisions, and takes what the defense gives him, i.e., he’s not afraid to check it down or throw it away. He’s humble and patient too. He is way better than Griffin and Gabby. Most importantly, he fits the Arians and Leftwich offense.

If you go back in look Trask had a better college career than Brady. The Patriots brought Brady in on a slow pace . We can do the same thing with Trask. We have a good enough defense we just need that runningback !!

For me I initially was upset with the Trask pick but after watching tape I understand it.
He is big and while not fast he moves week in the pocket and rolls out will. Jameis wasn’t fast either bit was big and still got so e rushing yards.
He is smart accurate and has touch. Those are skills that are hard to teach or develop. Many QB after years still don’t make the right reads or deliver the ball where only the receiver can get it and in a way that he can make YAC.
Trask excels at that.
As for his arm strength we haven’t seen him throw with velocity but he has the frame to do it. Most of his throws he was often throwing without being able to or choosing to step into his throws
This is very teachable. With the coaching staff and his I tellifence and other intangibles I think he can become a very effective quarterback wit a year or so to develop.
In meantime he is a cheap backup and was basically a near 3rd round pick. Heck of for some reason Rodgers wants to come here when Brady retires, the. We can trade him like Jimmy G. was and recoup our investment.
Truth is there was nobody at that point in the draft that would have contributed meaningful stats this year. And none of the 3 tier 2 qb in this draft would have made it to our 3rd round pick.
Meanwhile I think Britt in the 5th will surprise people. Darden shod have been a 3rd round pick and looks like a slightly smaller Tyreek Hill.
Even the CB we took in the 7th Wilcox has amazing measurables.
He can be our Ryan Smith gunner replacement and can maybe develop into a solid corner given his size and speed.
Hainsey will be our backup at nearly every O line position this year. He will likely slide into a starting guard or center role next year after a year of development.
More I think about it and the more I love this draft even though the names aren’t sexy.
Last year I felt same way and meanwhile Johnson Winield and especially Wirfs look great and future starters and probowlers.
I also think Vaughn is going to be good given the chance. He had no trading camp and had Covid so was way behind as a rookie.
I am excited about this team for this year but also like the core for the future too.

Oh and almost forgot Tryon is going to be a great player.
This year he will learn under great veterans and line coaches.
He will also keep Barrett and JPP fresh as he can play both positions and spell them.
In 1 or 2 years he will replace JPP being built very much alike.

I think between Byron and Bring It Brady, Trask has those intangibles the select few backups who make it big need. Patience, Perseverance, and a strong work ethic. The Bucs have all the good stuff in Trask already, now with Byron and Brady giving Trask the molding and Brady’s workout plan I think you’ll see a faster more mobile QB with a stronger arm. Im a bigtime Gator and I can tell you Trask has been highly underestimated as a QB, he reads the field quickly and chooses his weapons wisely with his receivers. Sure I’d get the ball to Pitts when possible because he always makes the grabs and thats the offense’s gameplan with our awesome head coach, but Trask also targeted his other weapons often and made split second reads before the field opened up because he studies film well and has excellent on field reads and judgement. I think his QB mind is better than most drafted ahead of him, the other body tuning will be easy to get in NFL shape with his hard work ethic and the QB staff around him definitely Mr. Brady included.
