Win-Now, Play-Now Mentality For Kyle Trask

May 3rd, 2021

New Bucs QB Kyle Trask

Those who know the story of Tom Brady will understand exactly where Joe is going here.

Brady, upon arriving in New England more than two decades ago, made a famous proclamation to Patriots owner Robert Kraft. The sixth-round pick told Kraft that he, Brady, was the best decision Kraft’s organization had ever made. It’s a true story.

Keep in mind Brady went there with the boss while a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback still in his 20s was on the roster, Drew Bledsoe, a fan favorite and a former Patriots No. 1 overall pick.

Brady had a winner’s mentality, a hunger to dominate the daily grind and prove to coaches in a hurry that he belonged with a ball in his hand.

Now the Bucs just drafted Gators QB Kyle Trask to close Round 2 of the draft on Friday. And Joe expects Trask to arrive with the mentality of being ready to start on Day 1.

Anything else would mean the guy isn’t wired right and, frankly, Joe doesn’t believe Bucco Bruce Arians and Jason Licht would have drafted Trask if he carried himself like a guy content to sit around for years, or was a guy who would not be writhing in rage because he’s a No. 3 quarterback.

In fact, Brady should — and probably will be — in Trask’s head about taking a starter’s mentality from Day 1. Heck, Brady may even challenge Trask to beat him out in order to emphasize the point.

Joe does not expect Trask to be some sort of passive, tablet-holder going through the motions. Joe hopes and expects Trask to have the world convinced by September that he’s better than Blaine Gabbert.

Is that too much to ask?

    Nope!

Geez, wish I’d read this article before I posted in the previous article. Take what I said there and apply it here.

  3. Medicated Pete Says:

Former UF QB’s I’d rather have: Danny Wuerffel & that hillbilly Shane Matthews

  4. Alanbucsfan Says:

Gabbert was a 1st round 10th pick and not successful as a starter. Trask is another big guy who fits the No Risk it No Biscuit offense- but can he win in NFL?
    I know it’s a team game , but last 3 games last year vs LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma- L, L, L , 5 interceptions…
He’s not going to be Brady or Montana, so stop…
    Alot of “hope” going around

  5. Ron says Says:

Hopefully he is never called on in the next 2 years but he should look to be the next man up and Brady will know the importance of that and groom him for it. Someone needs to hold the ship steady and make sure we get to the playoffs if a injury occurs, he doesn’t have to be spectacular but efficient in our scheme. This year as last the journey as long as it continues does not matter as much as making the destination and being ready then.

  6. DingleBerry Says:

Dude better get used to hold a tablet/clipboard. Because he’s a career backup.

    Nuff said.

  7. bucsfan4life Says:

Alanbucsfan, that may be true, but lets look at those Ls, for example, the Bama L: Passed for 408 yds, 3 TDs, 0 INTs. You can’t knock him for that performance, in fact that is the game that I walked away saying, I think this guy can play on Sunday. Go look at how Fields did against that same defense a few weeks later.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The way I look at it…..we spent a #1 overall pick, invested 5 years and millions of dollars on what?
    This is a 64th pick….a backup….so far has a 0-0 record with 0 TDs & O ints…..
    Give the guy a chance.

I am quite certain that Brady at least liked Trask over Mills & Mond….perhaps others.

  9. SB~LV Says:

    Fools game speculating
    I simply don’t know
What I do know is that the game is getting faster with much less hitting
The clear trend is wiz bang pinball wizard QB’s
For conversation sake in 3 years with Brady retiring the roster and elite WR’s on the roster today probably won’t be there when Trask takes over the starting role.
It is really impossible to predict

  10. Alanbucsfan Says:

    bucsfan4life-
The Gators had a chance to play for National Championship if they beat an unranked LSU team at home and couldn’t do it and Trask was not very good in that game- Again, I want all Bucs’ picks to be successful, but I think there were better options at other positions.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here’s what I suspect will happen…….some posters will whine about Trask constantly…..even though he probably won’t take a snap as a starter for 2 or 3 years…..
So, whine, whine, whine….you are wasting your time & ours.

  12. Hodad Says:

Had to get new blood in the QB room. The last pick in the 2nd round was getting what you thought was the next best QB in the second tier of QBs. You can call it the first pick of the 3rd round, because it basically was. Two QB’s went right after Trask. That makes the top of the 3rd just like the top of the 1st with 3 QBs going in a row. Look at it that way this pick was right where it was supposed to be. If we’re wrong with our pick there, so was Minn, Hous.

  13. Ben green Says:

If they loved trask so much, why didn’t they take him in the first round? Brady is going to bury this guy. Y’all obviously still don’t understand the goat. He won’t mentor trask, hell he won’t even talk to him much. Instead he’ll be tutored by BA and BL. Ha, good freaking luck with that.

  14. SB~LV Says:

The same arguments against Trask can be used for
    Matt Jones
    🤠

  15. Oneilbuc Says:

Brady was not good in college and he had to sit a year . So what makes you think Trask can’t be good ? No body knew Brady in college are less you where a Michigan fan. But that no risk it no biscuit offense need to go . That’s a bad offense for any quarterback especially a young quarterback . It wasn’t good for even Brady they had to change the offense because it’s to high risk for turnovers. So I hope they don’t bring that no risk it no biscuit offense for Trask because he will be another quarterback that the bucs couldn’t develop.

  16. Ben green Says:

Big exception SB-LV Jones will be taught to play like tom brady did. Not like jamison winston

  17. Oneilbuc Says:

SB LV . You are right bro I have said that about Jones . He had more first round picks from his offense than any quarterback in the draft . But they talk about Trask 2 players that was first round picks but Jones is the next Brady !!! Lol 😆🤣😂

  18. SB~LV Says:

B Green… nothing wrong with what Jameis was taught, he had great coaching!
He simply could not read defenses real time and then made bad decisions after he missed the plays designed timing, on top of all that he was not accurate !
Jameis will be benched before the end of October!

  19. Oneilbuc Says:

Well if Brady don’t help him then yall need to kill all that leadership team guy I’ve been hearing all year.

  20. SB~LV Says:

Why are you here ONeil ?

    …………..

    You Epitomize “Idiocy” sir!.
The LSU game was in the bag until Marco Wilson threw that guys shoe 20 yards and gave the ball back to LSU for a Miracle last second Field goal.
UF played Bama better than ANY team last yr!!!
Oklahoma he was throwing to receivers that had never taken a college snap yet as all of his starters sat out the game.
Keep being a stupid sheep pal.

  22. Alanbucsfan Says:

    SB-
“Almost” works in horseshoes and hand grenades, not football.

  23. Kentucky Buc Says:

O’Neil, lol. Your clueless. Brady wasn’t good in college ? No, all he did was win, just like he does now. I read this garbage every year . Trask and Jones have one thing in common with Brady . Theyre white. It’s not Brady’s job to train this guy.

  24. Leighroy Says:

Can you not be both patient and hungry at the same time? I mean Drew Bledsoe was good, but Tom Brady’s current status is an apples and oranges comparison. He. Is. The. Goat. Still playing in his prime.

You have to accept that fact as a backup, but thinking Trask (especially given his track record) wouldn’t prepare himself to be ready if Brady went down is like thinking Joe hasn’t mentally prepared for a “yes” from Rachel Watson.

  25. Mike C Says:

SB still has points Alanbucsfan, horseshoes and grenades aside.

  26. SKBucsFan Says:

I didn’t like the pick either. There were a lot of better positional players out there. But this is who the Bucs drafted. Now I hope he becomes a stud…for the Bucs. Hope is all we have right now.
I’d rather Trask be the guy than be one of those teams that keeps drafting QB’s. Because we know Cleveland , the Jets and. Chicago have been stellar over the years. Wasted draft picks are a killer to progression.

  27. SKBucsFan Says:

And before you all get your panties in a knot, yes Cleveland is good now. But I don’t want to have to go through 8 qbs to find one that works.

  28. 813bucboi Says:

    SB

    agreed

LSU game was won if not for marco….

bama game wouldve been different if trey dean doesnt fumble after he picked off mac jones….

trask was throwing to 2nd and 3rd string guys…timing was off….

folks forget trasks debut…..he came in for an injured franks while the team was down….he brought them back for the W….took control of the team and never looked back…thats the type of mental toughness we need at the qb position….

folks bashing trask are just jw/fsu homers….lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  29. ManzielMadness Says:

    @AlanBucsFan
    Trasks stats:
    Vs. LSU = 29/47 (61.7%) 474yds 2TDs 2INTs
    Vs. Bama = 26/40 (65%) 40yds 3TD’s 0INTs
    Vs. OU = 16/28 (57.1%) 158yds 0TDs 1INT
Clearly our haven’t seen him play or otherwise you’d know he was not the reason why we lost against LSU or Bama. He absolutely balled out against Bama’s vaunted defense. The main issue for UF was that their defense sucked for the first time in years. Oh and their other big game that decided the SEC east vs UGA?
    Vs. UGA = 30/43 (69.8%) 474 yds 4TDs 1INT
And Trask balled out again. The Oklahoma game was his only bad performance last year probably due to the fact that all his starting WRs opted of the bowl game. Not saying the kid is gonna dominate th league but give him a shot.

  30. ManzielMadness Says:

    408yds vs. Bama
Sorry, keyboard is not working correctly ATM.

  31. Ben green Says:

SB if Brady had continue to play the way BA was coaching him, you’d have been bounced in the wildcard round.

  32. Alanbucsfan Says:

Not saying Trask sucks, he is decent- but was he the best pick at that spot? I think there were better options. Anyway, we’ll see, but in the NFL he’ll be judged on winning, not stats.

  33. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Alan

Against the National Champions in Alabama, Trask threw for over 420 yards and zero interceptions in a 52-46 shootout loss in the SEC Championship.

The Cotton Bowl Game against Oklahoma doesn’t really count as numerous players such as Pitts and Tooney sat out and did not play. Shows character and leadership though.

Do you think Jones, the 15th overall pick in the draft could have done as well against Alabama if he was the Gator’s starting QB as Trask did, because I am confident saying that Trask would have put up great stats as the Crimson Tide QB.

  34. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

You’re assuming a lot. Misleading title.

  35. Oneilbuc Says:

Alabamafan . Winning is not a individual stat I know the media told you that but it’s not. It wasn’t a quarterback stat when Luck was the quarterback with the colts when his team wasn’t good. See this is what hate because even if he plays well and the team lose they are going to nick pick his stats. But Lawrence team lose I can promise you they are not going to blame him for nothing it will be every body else fault. Because they love him look how they backed him up after his comments. So to all bucs fan let’s not believe what media say about him .

  36. Oneilbuc Says:

Kentuckybuc Brady didn’t even start in college he played good in the rose bowl . But he was not good in college that’s why teams passed on him . Brady had to be developed and Belichick developed him . You must be to young or to old to remember.

  37. D-Rome Says:

I am not a fan of the Florida Gators and I think Gator fans are one of the worst fan bases in all of sports. I put them up there with the likes of Red Sox fans and Ohio State fans. Anyway, I think the Kyle Trask pick is a really good one at the right spot. Thankfully the Bucs didn’t do something dumb like trade up to get him. Perfect spot to take a gamble on the future and if it doesn’t work out it’s not as if the future was mortgaged to get him.

  38. DingleBerry Says:

Y’all know who else had great production in the SEC and played great against Bama? Johnny Manziel

    The overhype is real.

  39. David Says:

He’s in a great position with Tom Moore on the staff and being able to learn from the offense from BL & the GOAT.
He should have the mentality of being ready to play immediately. I don’t expect Brady to challenge him but I do expect him to watch how meticulous Brady is with every single little detail and learn from that.
He was a back up in high school and a back up in college and every time he stepped on the field he proved the wait was worth it.

  40. cmurda Says:

Blaine is a solid dude to have around and maybe could win a game but I sure hope Trask is better than Blaine. Comparing Trask to Johnny Football doesn’t even make sense. Two completely different styles. Johnny is a backyard baller capable of pulling off unthinkable plays. Trask is a technician. Smart and calculated and doesn’t stray far away from sanity. I’ll take Trask as he seems to be developable. I’m making that word up. It works.

  41. AllHailJPP Says:

    I’m better then Blaine Gabbert

  42. DingleBerry Says:

I wasn’t comparing Trask to Manziel. Merely using Manziel as an example of the fact that a player can be productive in the SEC and play well against Bama, and still be a bust.

  43. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Dingleberry

    Johnny Manziel has demons.

He’s an alcoholic which is a disease that has destroyed many a life.

Johnny Manziel is also diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Those two things are monsters by themselves.

Together, they are usually tragically deadly.

This is context as to why Manziel failed, despite his great talent.

  44. DingleBerry Says:

Manziel was every bit as wild in college as he was in his early pro career, and they didn’t prevent him from being incredibly productive and playing well against bama.

While all things you mentioned were certainly a factor in why Manziel is no longer in the NFL even as a back up, but they aren’t the reason he failed initially.

He failed on the field because his game didn’t translate to the pros. It is flat out 100% easier to be a productive QB in college than it is in the NFL.

Kyle Trask is just another Jake Fromm/Mason Rudolph. Big strong guy, productive in college, below average arm and very little to no upside.

Also, Arians is on record saying that he wants to re-sign Gabbert, so we literaly spent a 2nd round pick for a guy to battle Ryan Griffin for the job of 3rd string QB. That’s just not good drafting I don’t care what anyone says.

  45. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Dingleberry

The Jacksonville Jaguars of 2020 would destroy the National Championship Crimson Tide Team of 2020.

It wouldn’t be close and it would be a massacre.

An amazingly talented alcoholic and bipolar disordered individual obviously will do better against college teams than against the best of the best of the best in the NFL who are every big as talented as you are, but aren’t fighting the demons of alcoholism and bipolar disorder that you are.

  46. DingleBerry Says:

I completely agree, the worst NFL team would be the best College team.

That’s why it’s completely ridiculous when people try and say that Kyle Trasks limitations as a QB don’t matter because he produced in the SEC.

  47. DingleBerry Says:

    would beat*
