Bucs QB Kyle Trask
Someone’s going to have to help Joe out on this.
Now Joe has no idea if Kyle Trask is going to be a good quarterback. The last time we saw the guy take the field came in the final hours of 2020 in the Cotton Bowl, Oklahoma’s defense chomped his arse good and proper.
It’s irresponsible to judge a quarterback on one game.
And a team like the Bucs should be given the benefit of the doubt in the way the team has drafted and signed free agents in the past few years.
So when Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians said Trask reminded him of Brad Johnson, many Bucs fans squealed like a wild hog walking into a hot wire fence. Well, it seems the Bucs are not alone in their belief that Trask could prove to be a very capable quarterback like Johnson was. Jeremy Fowler of BSPN is well-connected within the league and he Twittered out the feedback he got from NFL types about Trask.
Must have heard from 10 different scouts about Kyle Trask: He’ll play 10-to-12 years in the league. Whether that’s as a long-term starter is yet to be seen. But the Bucs want to find out.

Here is the thing about Johnson: He had a lot of NFL success. In his 15 years, he had five losing seasons. Five other years he led a team to the playoffs. It’s not like the Bucs just drafted Rick Mirer.
Trask is a nice gamble. A 64th pick is essentially a third-round pick. His college coach has had success developing winning NFL starting quarterbacks.
The 64th pick on a guy who has zero pressure on him and can take two years with some of the best quarterback coaches in the gam, watching how the very best goes about his daily routine? It’s a high-reward/low-risk selection.
Oh, and if Trask really does turn into Johnson, the Bucs will be celebrating another Super Bowl win down the road.

The way Joe looks at it, Trask is a nice gamble. A 64th pick is essentially a third-round pick.
Posted this earlier……Trask went at 64……Mond at 66 & Mills at 67…….
If we wanted Trask….there is no way we could have gambled by waiting on pick 95.
I’ll admit I din’t think we needed to draft a QB this year….but I won’t take that out on Kyle Trask….neither should anyone else.

Joe…seems some fans haven’t figured out that a guy like Rodgers or Brady only come along once every decade. And a guy like Mahomes, who is great now and is almost as rare, is one hit away… not totally improbably considering his scrambling style, from a major injury forever changing his game.
Brad deserves his due. He was like clockwork when it came to accuracy. He was the bull when it came to toughness. And he was a winner.
Trask isn’t Brady… most likely never will be. But with a good team around him, may be very much like Brad…our first SB winner.

I like the pick and agree he wouldn’t have lasted very long after we picked him.
It’s was a smart decision looking towards the future while still being all-in on another SB run.
We have a plan and a damn solid one at that.
I think even some of the naysayers will realize as time goes on.
I expect we’ll be restocking the DL next year.

Trask has been used to coaching a working on his game. I am encouraged by this and believe working alongside Brady will pay huge dividends as long as he can mix in real NFL playing time to gauge his progress. I am not sure how getting him real game time is going to work but it is necessary for his progress.
In the big picture I am feeling better that the Bucs have addressed the position and the future.
The post draft starting veteran cuts will be the deluxe insurance rounding out the roster for 2021.
Rant… with a 17 game regular season the roster size needs to be expanded and the owners will not do that without pressure from the players union.

I think his upside is more in the range of Kirk Cousins or Joe Flacco…maybe Carr. He’s more mobile and has a stronger arm then Johnson. Too much is made of projections when it comes to draft picks. Winston was the “most pro ready” player in the draft…..he’s a back up. Same with Mariota who was mobile and super accurate….both are now back ups to lower round picks. I believe sitting a year or two exponentially improves their odds of success.

For those keeping score at home, it is humorous to see the “Trask Stinks out loud” crowd because darn near 100% of those folks were Jameis Apologists. That only further reinforces my liking of the pick- if the Jameis apologists hate it then he must be a solid QB prospect.

Understanding the reason behind the Trask pick, there were several OLinemen and DB’s and even the Bucs’ fan favorite Joseph Ossai available- if you’re in win now mode- wouldn’t you want to make your OLine or Defense deeper and potentially more dominant ?
I hope Trask is successful, but he’s got average backup written all over him.

I really don’t see a need to carry 4 QBs……..didn’t see the need last year either…
With 17 games….I think we have better use of a roster spot.
Just pick up one to learn the system….an UDFA and put him on the practice squad.
If we would have protected Rosen last year and replaced Griffin with him, we’d be in better shape this year.

We got a SEC QB who has a 5 to 1 ratio for TD/INT who is said to be able to make all the throws and threw for 43 TDs. In a conference know for it’s receivers and cornerbacks and safeties that sounds pretty good. At the time I was hoping for Davis Mills but right now I think we might have gotten a steal that will have time to be polished and ready when the time comes. I am still wondering why we brought back Ryan if Gabbert is brought back but hopefully that will work it way out.

Gators had a significant number of opt-outs for the Cotton Bowl, Joe – including 2 first rounders – Kardaious Toney and Kyle Pitts -so many in fact they could have just skipped the game.

Trask is not going to take Brady’s job from him. Period. That being said, if he is not studying film to take Brady’s job from him, practicing to take Brady’s job from him, playing to take Brady’s job from him, no one will be more pissed off than Tom Brady. Never understood the foolish mentality of the fan who blames a particular college for the success or failure of a pro quarterback. No matter the coach or the year, it’s always the school’s fault.
Are you saying both Aaron Rogers or Patrick Mahomes wouldn’t have made it in the NFL had they payed for Florida?
Here’s one: What do Rick Leach, Benny Friedman, Jim Harbaugh, Elvis Grbac, Chad Henne, Denard Robinson, Brian Griese, John Navarre and Dennis Franklin have in common?
Answer: They were the best quarterbacks to ever play at Michigan.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to judge Trask based on the Oklahoma game.
It was literally the only game where he couldn’t take advantage of throwing to 2 legitimate 1st round studs against college kids. Seriously, nearly all of Trasks best plays are him just throwing to an area somewhere near Kyle Pitts. And all of his limitations and physical weaknesses were thoroughly exposed against the Sooners.
And those weakness are present in every single game cut up available to be seen on Kyle Trask. He is incapable of throwing with any kind of velocity past 5-10 yards. You see it routinely. Over and over if this dude is throwing into a tight window past that distance, DB’s have ample time to break on the ball to swat it down or pick it.
Kyle Trasks physical limitations will only be exacerbated at the NFL level.
Sorry Gators fans. But your guy is a stinker.

It’s refreshing to see this Bucs organization make correct football decisions. I thought the Kyle Trask pick was a great one. Six years ago the Bucs went all-in on Jay-Miss because they had to. This time around they’re playing like a poker pro with deep stacks by taking risks that won’t hurt them right now.

Why aim for just plain solid when your hope is to compete with Mahomes or Josh Allen every year? I guess we have to trust all the QB gurus on staff, but most analysts see a higher ceiling for Jones, Mond, and Mills. That’s my concern.

I think it’s more because brad johnson was solid in his era it’s a different nfl game now and a brad johnson type of player has less avenues of success because they cannot create our of structure I didnt like the pick thought is was a pretty average draft. When I hear luxury picks I think bpa for most of the picks and I don’t think the bucs did that but it is what it is and hope we get another sb because this is still a very talented team go bucs

We will see this week what they really think of him depending on if Gabbert signs. If the Bucs knew they would get Trask it could be why they signed the cheaper Griffin. Trask ain’t going nowhere, so it’s between Gabbert, and Griffin if he even signs. Otherwise the Bucs will bring in a 4th young FA as the 4th camp arm.

Joe……….it would not just be ‘irresponsible’ to judge Trask on the Oklahoma game. It would be down right Stupid. Every one of his receivers AND Kyle Pitts sat out that game. He was throwing to guys that had never taken the field!!!!!
I lost a lot of respect for every receiver UF had that day. They hung him out to dry!

One of my main points is that he was playing without his top receivers, genius.
Him being forced into a situation where it was all on him is the PERFECT situation to judge his abilities as an individual. And he failed in spectacular fashion.

I can’t see any scenario Ron where we carry 4 QBs on the roster. Also can’t see any scenario where BA doesn’t bring Gabbert back. I think Griffin was an inexpensive, short term insurance policy (in case we didn’t draft a QB). Got a hunch that, come Sep, our QBs will be Brady, Gabbert & Trask (we have to protect him, and can’t do that on the Practice Squad as we found out with Rosen).
Not a clue whether Trask will be our future QB, but he sure does have a great incubator to grow in. And no real pressure to produce RIGHT NOW (like Winston had?). I totally agree with Wesley … ‘Brad Johnson was a very good QB’. Not fancy like some; more the ‘meat & potatoes’ kind of QB. But ‘The Bull’ got it done, which says a lot I think. The key was having a solid TEAM around him, both offense AND defense. And I anticipate the same could very well be true of Kyle Trask … eventually.

What a BS argument about the OU bowl game opt-outs. If Gronk, ME13 and Godwin were all out for a playoff game and we lost, no one would be roasting Brady for a subpar performance if it happened.
The rest of the gator team didn’t show up. Dan Mullen got exposed for being unprepared. OU took the game way more seriously. But Kyle Trask didn’t opt out like the rest of the top draft talent on UF.
Those judging Trask against OU and turning a blind eye to his SEC championship game against Bama and their future-professional laden defense are hypocrites.

When people suggest that no quarterback from UF has ever had a good career in the NFL, it is an excellent historical point.
However, other than as a historical point why does it have much value in evaluating whether Trask will be a good QB?
1st it is as simple as we all know. Whether Trask will be a good QB in the NFL depends on him and this current coaching staff more than anything else.
2nd it is not the UF history that one should look at on whether UF develops it’s quarterbacks enough to be good in the NFL, it is the current coaching staff of UF – Mullens and his offensive coordinator and QB coach that matters.

I have nothing against the kids. I hope he is our future and an active Buc for a long time. Learning under Brady can only help him. And the good thing about this is that we can use a 2nd rounder next year on an O-linemane ince we aren’t desperate for a qb.
If Trask lives up to his strengths of a pocket passer with good decision making and accuracy we could be in for a (continued) fun run. Keep building the trenches and this guy can play a long time.

Ahh the haters are back in full force. I can tell who actually watched the Gators last year. Gators didn’t have Pitts or their top 3 WRs. Imagine how Brady would look with Gronk, Evans, Godwin, and Brown out vs a top defense.
Plus, you all point to the Oklahoma game and ignore that Trask and the Gators got into a shootout with Bama. Gators were the only team all year to finish less than 1 score away.
Also, what’s with the “he can’t win with scrubs” argument? Neither can Brady. That’s partially why he left New England in ’19.

Brady literally did win with scrubs in NE, he made it to the playoffs his last year in New England.
I find it absolutely hilarious how the only people who actually think Trask is good are the Gators fans. Hmm, I wonder why that is?
Also I’m sick and tired of hearing people being box score scouts and talking about the Alabama game. Look up the cut up of that game on youtube right now and tell me he did anything special.
Just like the rest of his season, the vast majority of Trask’s production was due to Dan Mullens scheming people wide open, dinking and dunking/ throwing screens to Toney and Grimes, and throwing up jump balls to Kyle Pitts.
KYLE TRASK IS A PHYSICALLY LIMITED QB AND THOSE LIMITATIONS WILL ONLY BE EXACERBATED IN THE NFL!

Gator fans actually watched the entirety of every single Trask game, not youtube cut-ups, so uh there’s that reason. None of us called for Jacoby Brisset, Jeff Driskel or Will Grier to be good pros, and yet they’re all still in the NFL (somehow). We’re not just homers, but we know the only reason the gators were in smelling distance of success last year was bc of Trask. He turned the team around in 2019 too.
If you’re sick and tired of people being box score scouts, then consider the circumstances of the OU game too and heed your own advice.

If it were Kyle Trask behind Mahommes line he would have thrown for negative yards. Mahommes still did some incredibly impressive things in that game. Any non mobile QB would have probably been sacked 10+ times that night and he managed to escape the majority of the time.

Bucs fans have no business pontificating on QBs. We have a history of running them out of town and watching them take other teams to the promised land. We win the lottery, and the greatest player of all time joins our team, and we pretend we know what it looks like enough to project the careers of others. This franchise is historically bad at surrounding this position with the proper support. No weapons, no running game, no line help, and lets not forget this lost decade where there wasnt even a defense to keep the other team from moving the chains and scoring points. As soon as Brady is done, those purse strings will be tightened and we will go back to mediocrity, and it wont be because of who we drafted to play QB,

Low hanging fruit. You can go rewatch the game for yourself and see plain as day that the reason Trask played so awful in that game is because the Sooners took advantage of Kyle Trasks weaknesses.
For as big and as strong as Trask looks, its strange just how slow his passes go through the air. And since you obviously consider yourself to be some kind of football genius, you know that the longer a pass is in the air the more time a defender has to make a play on it.
If Trask somehow manages to play a full season in the NFL he’ll probably break Jameis’ record for pick 6’s thrown.

So I go on Trask’s highlights against BAMA… within the first 90 seconds of watching it I see Trask absolutely throw a laser where only Pitts can get it (1st Qtr 11:10 left) and then throw a beautiful deep pass where only Toney could get it (1st Qtr 10:10 left).

Damn, I’m rewatching more of these UF vs BAMA highlights and man UF’s defense was BAD last year. Graham really needs to step up… Davonte Smith wide open deep for a TD pass late in the 1st Quarter (nobody in his zip code) not to mention Bama called a bunch of screens that left players wide the f*** open. Maybe Dingleberry doesn’t realize the Gators colors are blue and orange. BTW Trask drops another dime of a deep pass in between 2 defenders (2nd Qtr 2:25).

I did have to change my name but i’m neither of those clowns. I was firmly on board with the Bruce Arians hire, I know Mike Smith is a garbage defensive coordinator outside of that fluke 5 game winstreak, and I know that Todd Bowles or Byron Leftwich would make a great replacement for coach BA when he retires.
I was also firmly on board with the Tom Brady signing and I’m absolutely kicking myself because I knew we were going to win the Super Bowl last year and should have made a beginning of the year wager but was too superstitious.
I also know we’re going back to back but i’m hesitant to bet on it for similar reasons lol.
I just feel like outside of a few solid Pickups in Hainsey, Darden, Wilcox and Stuard that Licht and his scouts blew this draft. I hope I’m wrong. But I have a pretty good track record for this sort of thing.
For instance I was equally bent out of shape when Licht passed on Donte Jackson and Isiah Oliver for MJ Stewart. Jackson became a probowler and Oliver is a solid #3 corner and MJ Stewart is basically a bad undersized linebacker for the Browns. I was also pissed off when we took Justin Evans over Kareem Hunt.
I wasn’t one of the people foaming at the mouth when we didnt draft Derwin James because I had a really good feeling that Vea was Haloti Ngata 2.0. And while I personally would have taken Josh Allen over Devin White I didn’t protest because I thought White could be a special player and I still liked the pick because we needed an MLB.
I had Mekhi Becton as my #1 OT going into 2019 but loved the Wirfs pick because he was one easily the most athletic and explosive of the 4 top OT’s in that class and he’s the one the fell to us.
Sure I could be making all of this up, but I’m not, and I have definitely been wrong before, I was absolutely in love with O.J. Howard in 2017 and rejoiced all night when he fell to us, and he’s largely been disappointing but that’s mostly due to injuries. I also thought Playoff Lenny would be the 2nd coming of AD Adrian Peterson and he hasn’t lived up to that.
But when I have a strong feeling that a pick isn’t a good one, I’ve been right FAR more often than I haven’t. And I have a STRONG feeling that Kyle Trask was a waste of 2nd round pick and will be a career backup.
TL;DR I’m right you’re wrong.

No idea what you are referring to. Joe’s not anti-Kyle Trask. Joe believes the Bucs front office/coaching staff has earned the benefit of the doubt. If they think he can be an OK-to-good quarterback, fine.

There are comments here negative towards trust because he had such great receiving talent. However if you go back and look you will see that there were three games that he did not have Pitts with him and he still put up unbelievable numbers. He had a poor offence of line compared to Mac Jones and did not have any kind of running game like Jones did. His defence was not as good either. So other teams knew that he was going to be in passing mode and he was still able to do what he did.
I agree that for his size it looks like he does not have the most velocity on the ball. However I think that is more technical than a limitation. He seems to prefer to throw a ball that has a certain velocity and touch on it which makes it much easier for his receivers to catch it. He also was in a situation where he had to throw off and off his back foot given the degree of pass rush that was coming at him.
I think that is something that will very easily be coached up at the NFL level with this training camp and brookie mini camp having the likes of Bruce Arians Thomas Moore and Leftwich and of course the goat all there helping him progress.
As for his lack of mobility, I saw many times where he scrambled around in the pocket or bootlegged out or even took a QB rush for a touchdown or a first down. Sure he is not mobile like Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson. But he is not somebody who is going to be very limited with his passing tree because of his inability to move. He is no Philip Rivers….

He’s accurate, he can read the defense, and he makes the right decision. Give him a line, some receivers, and running game, that is all you need out of any quarterback.
As for Florida quarterbacks never been great in the NFL… None of them played in the offense Trask did none of them were back ups everywhere they went and consistently had to prove themselves. I think he has a chance to be a damn good starter. The right talent around him and a great defense, skies the limit.
But we are getting ahead of ourselves.
We have Brady and a team built to make a SB run for 2 more years.

Gerald McCoy, while somewhat soft and a tad over-rated, was not a cancer and was not the sole reason why the Bucs were terrible when he was here and for many years was one of a few good players on a rotten team.

I clearly said I was in love with OJ Howard in 2017, if I was Nos I’d have said Dalvin Cook, and to Nos’ credit after a couple of injury marred years to start Dalvin has been one of the better running backs in the league albeit inside of a notoriously RB friendly scheme. The same scheme that made Terrell Davis a hall of famer lol.
Also there’s just the fact that I don’t write or sound anything like Nos did so why would you think I’m him?
I haven’t even said “Gaytors” once. I just don’t think Kyle Trask is a good prospect.

The kid has size for seeing the whole field. Like Brady you don’t have to be a good runner to be a great qb. So arm strength? Well he is young and can easily increase his strength over the next couple years. The coaches will see to that. Learning from the GOAT, serious weight training, adding zip to his throws, plenty of time to learn all the nuances of the pro game, he should be well prepared to step up and compete when the time comes. The bucs don’t need a running qb to win. They just need solid decisions and adequate arm strength. Coaching and Brady will bring him along. Gabbert needs to be signed for experience in case Brady goes down in the short run which would be a crushing blow.

People keep talking about Florida quarterbacks in the NFL . Well tell me how many from Texas Tech made it besides Mahomes. How many Tennessee quarterbacks was good other than Payton Manning? It doesn’t matter what college you come from it’s the coaching and the team around him. So give Trask a chance !!

Comparing the performance of a guy like Brady without weapons…a fully seasoned QB with a hand full of SB victories, to a young College QB, is pretty silly regardless of their ultimate potential.
I’m not a UF or a FSU guy….so I have no skin in the game. But I’d rather take my chances with a relatively accurate QB, a good decision maker, with an average arm, than one with a strong arm, that can’t read defensive adjustments once the ball is snapped, and plays with reckless abandon.

Anyone using the Oklahoma vs Florida game to knock down on Trask needs to realize he’s receivers all set out that game to prevent a possible injury or covid that could cost them millions in the draft but Trask hung in there and played even though it was without most his starters THAT SHOWED ME AGAIN HOW DEDICATED TRASK IS. I’m pleased to have him and I think he and Brady will get along great along with the other teammates 👍🍺

Bbro… another way to look at it is that if Trask had a great game against Oklahoma without all those weapons, does anyone think we would have had a shot to draft him? He probably would have been long gone by 15. None of these guys is a sure thing. Time will tell.

Nothing in preseason has changed my mind that Winston will be an elite QB in this league. Not even catching 35 sacks this season will break his confidence. I’m not worried at all about Jameis Winston’s future in the NFL. I see there are STILL some fans in here whining about not drafting Mariota. You’re not one of them, but they are here still. I want them to keep coming on here as much as possible and don’t ever leave.

Trask was drafted by the only ONE Team that will ensure that he has a long NFL career by being able to hone his craft while learning from the G.O.A.T. ! NONE of the other QB’s taken before him will have that luxury . He’s aware that he’s going to sit for a year or so and I’m sure he’s excited to learn from the BEST QB to have ever set foot on a gridiron . In JL I Trust !

Plus, it’s another challenge for Brady, how can I continue to kick so much ass that the young QB behind me has no choice but to raise his game.
Being that Trask was a backup since HS, he’s got the mental game down to be patient, work his ass off, and play well when given the chance.
It’s ok if he’s just a good backup. If he’s more down the road, that’s great too. No reason to think we “know” the outcome. Personally, I like his chances of being a solid player and at least an average starter. I tend to like pocket passing more than athleticism bc processing, decision making trump everything.

Over the years all the QBs the Bucs have put on the field leaves a lot to be desired with the exception of Brady. So I am sure Trask will make the top 5 QBs in Buc history.

I know we have a full QB room, but Jeff Driskel was just released by Broncos. He could be the Bucs Taysom Hill option, not that we need a gimmick as long as we have Brady. Or at least a great practice squad player to prepare against mobile QB’s.

Has there ever been a player drafted from the Gators while he was still a Gator (ie., no Cam Newton or Jacoby Brissett) that ended up being worth a damn as an nfl player? Hopefully this kid can buck history and be a capable starter down the road.
I’d much rather have a game manager at qb with a kicka$$ team around him then have an awesome qb who is required to perform miracles in big games in order to win due to having a much lesser team around him.
