New Bucs QB Kyle Trask.
Former longtime college head coach and Ravens offensive coordinator Rick Neuheisel, a former quarterback himself, loves the Bucs’ selection of QB Kyle Trask in Round 2 tonight.
‘This is a ready-made deal,” Neuheisel said on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Neuheisel said Trask is the rare college QB who has learned out to play in empty [backfield] sets, as well as have great timing with elite NFL-caliber weapons, 2020 first-round picks tight end Kyle Pitts and WR/RB Kadarius Toney.
In addition, Trask knows how to be a backup, which the full NFL Radio panel says will be important. Trask was a backup in high school and started his Florida career the same way.
Joe will note that Neuheisel is not someone who loves every player. About 15 minutes after the Bucs picked Trask, Neuheisel was barking about how he didn’t like the pick of QB Kellen Mond to the Vikings out of Texas A&M. It seems Neuheisel’s son coached at A&M.
Joe will repeat; preseason is going to be awfully fun this season.

My concern is that he was throwing to 2 first round picks in college…
And has mostly been a backup.
I think he can learn from Brady but in my completely uninformed opinion, there were other QBs who may have had more upside and could have been taken later.

I thought mond was their guy but Trask could pan out. Mond was a 4 year starter and didnt post top end stats so maybe there was a little “what you see is what you get” with Mond. However, Trask seems to have progressed as a starter. With Brady and some NFL coaching, perhaps in a couple years he could be a really good QB. I am putting this in perspective, I am not sold on him. I was hoping for a CB or another pass rusher.

I think he has a great opinion when talking about quarterbacks. He knows his stuff. I agree about Trask. He was throwing to NFL talent, he was making the right decisions, he can move in the pocket, and he’s very accurate.
BL will be able to coach him up as he learns from Brady for the next year possibly 2.
**This pick tells me there’s a chance if they go back to back, Brady walks off into the sunset.

For everyone trashing him about his arm. Per the Draft Network:
Trask’s lower half may need to be reconstructed as it is the root of why most of his passes die in the deeper portions of the field.
So it’s his base and mechanics from the waste down is why he loses power and velocity. That can be fixed and with Brady, BL, and Clyde Christensen will help him fix that.

Scouting reports are all over the place on Trask.
Some say he has a noodle arm, that anything deep will die, and in the NFL that means you can’t throw deep since in college you can complete those, but in the NFL they are INTs. But other reports say he has an average arm – which is fine by me, then others say he has a strong arm.
But multiple scouting reports said he can’t drive the ball downfield, and one suggested the issue isn’t his arm, it’s just a poor lower body, which can be fixed. So if he doesn’t have an NFL deep ball, but it’s just that he needs to workout and fix his footwork, then that’s not really a huge issue.
They also say he’s immobile, but who cares, the offense is built for an immobile QB, and he’s still going to be dramatically more mobile than Brady even if he’s ‘immobile’ by the standards of a 23-year old.
Also some sites say he’s excellent and quickly reading defenses, while others say he’s slow at processing info — again, no it’s all over the place.
Hopefully the Bucs nailed this one — if they did, then it’s an excellent pick. Even if he’s just Mike Glennon, and can be a good backup, I’m OK with that compared to Garbage Gabbert being back.

Well, I like the pick. This draft is all about drafting backups with potential to start. Trask fits the Brady mold, which our offense is built for.
Brady backups tend to do well and increase their value. I support the pick.

HEY ROD (and others),
Go to YouTube right now and search “Kyle Trask vs Alabama highlights” and it will bring up the game from 12.19.20, just a few months ago.
Watch that video and you will change your mind on this “arm strength” and not “being able to drive the ball downfield” stuff. It’s not true. He throws plenty of strong passes in that game including long passes.
Pay attention to his ACCURACY. He’s amazing. Rifle passes… accurate. Short dump offs, accurate. Long passes with air under it to lead his WRs, accurate.
And he’s throwing to some future NFL WRs and deliver it perfectly to them while also playing against ALABAMA which has many players on that Defense that will be playing in the NFL soon.

There is nothing wrong with having a good back up QB for 5+ years. Even if he never becomes the starter, he will understand his role and won’t become a problem.
Either way, I trust BA to know a good NFL QB when he sees one.

I hate it when Licht picks guys that play for a Florida school. There are always posters on here that think it’s the steal of the draft because the homers only watch their team. I wish the kid well, but be prepared to have to defend him when the Bucs stink.
Our managment team bats .500 at best with first rounders and .125 with 2nd rounders. That’s hard to come back from when your dont have Tom Brady, or Aaron Rodgers to attract players.

Rather have this guy for small money as our backup then Blaine Gabbert who has absolutely no upside and cannot win us a game. With some top of the line coaching and guidance this kids arrow is pointing up! Hope we get some cornerback depth in next round.

BradyBucs – Actually I just went ahead and watched it…
My verdict? I see a college QB with good ball placement who is doing touch passes, which will not translate to the NFL, and I can see what the reports saying he doesn’t drive the ball are talking about.
With that said, he didn’t really need to drive the ball, so it’s hard to take much from watching that. The Bama defense is full of NFL talent, but they were not running an NFL scheme, it was a bunch of one-on-one plays with no safety help, which is pretty rare in the NFL.
I’ll watch some more film, but ideally I’d want to see him drive some deep balls. It’s not just about throwing deep, you have to do it with velocity. But the Bucs know this as well, so I assume he’s passed that test with them. I just want to see it myself, and I’ll watch some full games in the weeks ahead — not that it matters to anyone else.

@Scott – I am hoping JL takes a flyer on Hamsah Nasirildeen – 6’4 Safety with lightning speed and length in 3rd round. But if Brady suffers any injury this year and we need a fill-in for a game, Trask will be better than Gabbert. Not flashy but safe.

Critics have said Tom Terrific had a noodle arm when he left college, they also said it before last year.
I like Trask, he was a bit slow on a couple of decisions last year, but he set records in the SEC coming off a bench for UF.
When it comes time, Trask can run this offense and no one will look back at what was before.
The only person who might suffer is Ryan Griffin, but he is paid well enough not to care. If thee is another preseason. Griffin will set new records and hang out on the bench.

Im a biased gator.
Trask is more similar to brady style wise and physically than the current backups and most of the other draftees.
That helps for timing in practice and continuity if trask gets in a game.
Saves money, no pressure for playing time that other positions might have.
This will be a good pick even if brady is replaced by aaron rogers or even jameous winston
Other guys might have better careers without being the right fit here. Shooting for the hof on every pick is not the best strategy imo.
Gator fans love trask, thats worth something.
Its a good pick business wise. Depending on how you define sucxess i like the odds here. I suspect joe does too.

LOL. His pass at 3:01 in that video to Pitts (travels 35 yards in the air) is the same velocity that Brady puts on the ball for a pass of that length.
If he truly lacked arm strength “that didn’t translate to the NFL” he would have been projected as a UDFA.
He was consistently projected as a 2nd day pick (2nd or 3rd round) by the vast majority of draft analyst sites.

I like the pick. I trust the Bucs coaching staff & personnel department until they give me a reason not to. Kid had 4300yds 43 TDS 8 INTs in the SEC last year(Burrow type numbers). Oh, but he had Pitts and Toney. Mac Jones and Tua played with 4 WRs drafted in the 1st the last two drafts (Judy, Waddle, Smith, Ruggs). Burrow had Chase & Jefferson. Nobody mentions those. The argument is irrelevant. This situation for Trask is the perfect incubator. He has good touch, timing, and stands tall in the pocket to deliver. Arm strength is average. 6th QB taken like Brady. Too much not to like it. Everybody else is reading into mock drafts & player rankings do form their opinion SMH!

The young man came straight off the bench, and got 19 games had perfect rhythm with an offense that had been playing without him. How can you people discount 69 tds and 15 ints as if they never happened nor matter. If you all remember it took the GOAT over 12 games to fully get in rhythm with our players and coaches. You same people will all hail the “power of Brady” when it comes to the team but seem to think he can’t influence Trask and have him prepared to start in 3 years. Crazy

Trask is potentially a very good QB.
But now, he is not TB12.
If TB12 is injured a rook QB like Trask will not be able to win enough games to go in the playoffs. If Brady fall, we are done. Trask is a project. A good project from my point of view!
The criticism can only be: are we not in a win NOW mode? If yes: then i would have go with a back up for a position to help the team now. Not a QB who will be ready in the futur in 2-3 years. Unless you think Trash can do as good as Brady if Brady is injured. And if Trask is that good in the absence of Brady to win it all, then what? When Brady return from his injury, do you keep Trask on the field or not?
Do you remember Bledsoe? Brady and Aaron Rodgers do. That’s why Rogers want out from GB. Love is good. And that’s the problem. Because Rodgers can see it in practices. What if Trask look good, or do well if Brady is out? A conflict between QB is not what we needed.
But otherwise, at this position in the draft, and for the long run, I love the pick. It’s the timing of the choice for our futur QB that is my question. We could have take a later QB, this year, and take an 1 round QB in 2-3 years when Brady will choose to retired.
And if Trask play it soft and go along well with Brady, it’s a good thing to have Trask for the TEAM,… on the long run. But now?
I hope, and I think, Trash who is used to be a back up, will be a perfect fit. I see a risk. But for the team, it can blossom as a great futur. It’s to the coachs to glue this team now! And in BA we believed!
