Turned The Corner
April 30th, 2021Joe understands several fans were and are concerned that first-round pick edge rusher Joe Tryon opted out last season. That’s fair.
But as Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht mentioned last night, Tryon tried to return to the Huskies but it was too late. And as Tryon said last night, it wasn’t like he was just pumping weights at a strip mall gym. He was regularly working out with former Seahawks defensive lineman Cliff Avril working and studying NFL-type techniques.
The PFF tribe pumped out some interesting stats about Tryon that seem to suggest he had really turned the corner as an edge rusher in 2019.
From the PFF NFL Draft Guide
“Tryon was trending up in a big way toward the end of 2019, posting 29 pressures in his final seven games after only 12 in his first six outings. Sadly, that was the last we saw of him before he opted out”#GoBucs pic.twitter.com/Gpz4D7FXyD

As Joe has stated before, he likes that Tryon has played in an NFL-style defense under the guidance of a former NFL coach, Jimmy Lake, who once upon a time was the Bucs secondary coach under Monte Kiffin when Chucky was running the show.
Given how many solid NFL players Washington has pumped out in recent years (and the Bucs have one of them who is a borderline star), Joe has very good vibes about this Tryon.

Who is the woman on the clip ?

Raheem was the secondary coach under Kiffin. Lake was his assistant.

I think the Bucs if they intend on staying put should target RB Javonte Williams if he’s still there. I’ve been checking out several after first day mocks and they have him going late second early third round.

Likely Darcie Glazer Kassewitz. She owns a good chunk of the team.

WHY did he opt out? does anyone know??
April 30th, 2021 at 3:03 pm
and why would they not let him back…is there more to this story?

People are going to love him. You cant judge players for opting out when you dont know what all went into his decision. I think there were health concerns for his mother? Anyways people fear Covid a lot less than a year ago when we didnt know what was going on or how to fight it. I hear the guy is built like an action figure so he obviously worked hard at staying in shape. He is a good value at a desperate position since JPP may not be with us after this season.

Robert
Supposedly Tryon’s mother is a nurse, and he felt that the exposure to Covid could have an effect on his family or his team.

Gotta give props to Sean Sullivan, who correctly predicted this is who we should/would draft at #32 on the Ira Kaufman podcast

What a moment, to be a first round pick and go to the Superbowl champs. Can’t wait to see him sacking JW, Matty Iceberg and whoever the Panthers throw out there.

I don’t care that he opted out. He is coming in ready to prove something. He wants to be here. He’s got good character. Wirfs and him can be anchors for the next ten years. This is how you build the post-Brady team.
I’d love to see Michael Carter come here, too.

The spineless Pac 12 jerked around the schools so much that I don’t have an issue with him opting out if he just didn’t know what kind of schedule he would be playing with his NFL future on the line. The last thing he’d want to do is get off to a slow start, or have the league cancel games, and end up with something like 4 games with 0.5 sacks because he got off to a slow start.
If he’s as good as the Bucs think he is, then had he played and had another big year he would have been drafted higher. The big downside however is that he only started for one year and hasn’t played football since last decade.
But in any case Licht has more than earned the benefit of the doubt and I certainly don’t know enough about him to have any educated take — not that that is needed for message board comments.

Just caught up on the latest JBF posts. I’m very happy with the pick and I’m sure Joe is as well. Heck, I think it was real position of need because we do have aging edge rushers.
April 30th, 2021 at 3:36 pm
Glad he opted out. Less wear and tear, and if he had improved on his 2019 sack numbers he would’ve gone top15.
April 30th, 2021 at 3:37 pm
Bottom line- he and his family are healthy and he just got picked by the league champions. He played his cards right.

Got to like our Edge rushers: JPP, Shaq, Tryon and Nelson. Gill might also show something this year. Just need another NT to keep fresh legs – I hoping this happens tonight.

@Robert I heard there was a pandemic last year. They say it was kind of a big deal…
April 30th, 2021 at 4:30 pm
Robert
Not only is his Mother a nurse…..he is from Washington State and that is where this terrible pandemic started in the US. So, folks were extra concerned there.
April 30th, 2021 at 4:34 pm
“He was so excited, he couldn’t talk!”
That’s what I like to hear from a young player coming to the Bucs. No “Prime Time” hot air for us. Just come to work.

I saw a vid where he said he opted out because the league was changing the season to the spring. He was concerned it would affect his preparation for the NFL draft. The league changed and decided to start in November instead. Somehow he was not allowed to opt back in because he was to late.
I think this is a great pic.

I love this sht! NFL draft day 1st round is a sacred holiday!
Glad to welcome this kid to the Bucs, he is a good vibe all the way around! He has an incredible body too (I am a 59y/o woman)
