Moving Down?

Last year Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager moved up one spot in the draft and landed a guy who, while still in his NFL infancy, sure looks like he could be the NFL’s dominant right tackle for the next decade, Tristan Wirfs.
And in 2018, Licht traded down just a couple of spots and got a dominant defensive tackle, Vita Vea.
So imagine what Licht might be looking to bag if he moves just a little in tonight’s draft? Albert Breer of SI.com posted a rumors article on the draft this afternoon. And he noted how teams picking late in the draft are trying to move down, even a little.
And Breer asked who would be shocked if Licht trades away the No. 32 pick to move back in the draft?
Speaking of the Ravens, we mentioned they could move up from No. 27. They’ve also had talks on moving down from No. 31. And the Bills have had talks with teams about moving down from No. 30. And it would surprise no one if the Bucs tried to peddle the 32nd pick.
Joe read that in this year’s draft, the sweet spot is in the neighborhood of Nos. 35-50ish. That’s where the bargains can be had.
Joe wouldn’t be opposed if Licht could pick up an extra second-round pick by moving back a few spots from No. 32.

What’s the difference between picking at 32 versus 35? The answer is a 5th year option. If you like a player enough at say 35, why on Earth wouldn’t you pick him at 32 and get the 5th year? Now if we’re talking 50 or so that’s a different question and answer…

Bucs can do whatever the hell they want with the pick. Trade back, up, or stay put. Just win baby! It’s awesome to sit back and pick last tonight, a reminder we were the last team standing. I have no doubt they are going to do something awesome w the pick.

SC, if the player isn’t great then you obviously don’t pick up the option. My conjecture was based on a difference of three spots. If you like a player at the end of the first or the beginning of the second round chances are you are certainly hoping and expecting that player to be someone worthy of a second contract. The option makes sense in that case.

You see the news out of Green Bay, that Rodgers doesn’t want to play for the meat Packers anymore. That’s why you don’t draft a QB. Just wait until Brady is ready to retire, then you pick up the next guy who people think is “washed up” and just surround them with good talent.

Vincente – Been saying for months that Rodgers is likely out of GB in 2 years, which is right when Brady will likely be hanging it up. That should be the Bucs plan, to go from Brady to Rodgers, just hand him a veteran team with good skill players.
The Bucs have NEVER signed a QB they drafted to a 2nd contract, EVER. So don’t waste a pick, unless maybe it’s a mid-rounder to get a backup like a Josh Johnson or Mike Glennon, I’m OK with that. But the idea should be to roll right into another veteran who can win now once Brady hangs it up. With the salary cap going up and some veterans retiring, I don’t even think the Bucs will need to serve time in cap hell, they might be able to just keep on winning. Also if the Bucs do win, players will want to play here again, and they’ll take small discounts, which again will help fill out the roster and keep the team competitive. This can go on indefinitely if they wanted to do things that way.

I agree with your premise Rod IF whoever that next “washed up” QB is would be willing to do what TB has done, rework his contract to give the team more cap space. And in the case of Rodgers, he hasn’t even done that once for GB.
However……If he would consider that, then…….let’s pick him up as our backup! and then he can take over after winning the 2021 season’s SB! 😉 )))

I’ve often maintained that a good strategy is to move down from 35 to 40 or 45 and use the extra pick to move up from 62 to 46-50……thus getting 2 top 50 players…
But, you have to have two trading partners to do that.
The beauty of the Bucs situation is that they could have several players at different positions available at 32 allowing them to trade down a bit and still pick one up.

CalBucsFan – Well anyone who gets that ‘washed up’ label isn’t going to be able to control the market and demand top money. However, again, keep in mind all the tricks you can do with the salary cap, and keep in mind how much the cap is going to go up with the new TV deals coming online in 2-years (I believe). It really will just come down to how much real money the Glazers are willing to spend, and I think they’re going to be just fine spending a ton of cash as they’re not losing any money when the team is winning.

an extra 2nd round pick for a 1st round pick? If I had a team I would do that in a NY second. I’d happily trade my 2nd round pick for your first round pick.

No way Rodgers is going to come to TB and sit behind Brady. And, although Rodgers is good, he is no Tom Brady. It’s more than just the on-field skill set that comes with Brady. It’s the optimism and can-do spirit that he infuses throughout the entire organization. It’s the way he motivates players to stay in shape, study film and practice as if it’s game time. I’m not aware of anyone else out there, even Aaron Rodgers, that has that “it” factor. Whether those intangibles can be taught to a developmental QB is something I’d like to see tried.

It’s a Great time indeed to be a BUCS Fan ! Even our 1st SB Team didn’t come back ENTIRELY intact with all 22 starters AND Coaches . Even during the Patriots “Heyday” every year they lost key players and Coaches to other Teams , we ARE on a ROLL here ! GO BUCS !!!!

If we do trade back, I wouldnt any further than 35-37….Landon will maybe still be there, doubt it though. Thats why I say if he’s our guy, go ahead and get him at 32.

With Kyle Trask out there and the patience he has shown I think we should pick him up at QB to learn I think he’ll be fantastic
