Well, this isn’t exactly drafting an impact player for the season in which you are (rightfully) hellbent on “Go for Two.”
Certain positions have a low if not a zero learning curve for rookies. And there are positions where rookies struggle far more often than not.
With that in mind, the man who has had the most accurate mock drafts in the past four years, Brendan Donohue of Warren Sharp’s outfit, Sharp Football Analysis, has published his final mock of 2021.
And he has the Bucs taking Washington defensive end Joe Tryon.
A name that you keep hearing that will be a “surprise” pick in the first round. In fact, it’s been said so often it may almost be a surprise at this point if he’s not. Tryon is currently +110 to be selected in the first round.
The Athletic’s Bob McGinn did his research on Tryon with NFL types, and here is what McGinn dug up.
“Extremely well put together,” one scout said. “He’s going to be overdrafted for what he’s actually done in his career. Somebody will take a chance on the physical traits. He’s gifted. He had (12½) sacks the last time he was on a football field. Looks the part, but (Joseph) Ossai and (Ronnie) Perkins outplayed him.”
From Renton, Wash., Tryon played from multiple alignments in his 25-game, 14-start career.
“I don’t know if he’ll ever be a dominant sack guy, but I could see him having steady six, seven (sack) years with a 10 every blue moon if his technique improves,” said a second scout. “He’s big, long and can run. He’ll probably be a DPR (designated pass rusher) early. I don’t see dominant ability, so he probably has the best chance to bust.”
Finished with 61 tackles (14½ for loss) and nine sacks.
“Love this kid,” said a third scout. “He can bend. He can drop into coverage. He doesn’t have any speed-to-power move. He’ll get stalled. But his effort is undeniable. He’s a very determined football player.”
Look, you will never ever get Joe to frown about loading up on pass rushers — EVER! We saw this past postseason how a pass rush can both win playoff games and a Super Bowl, and how a pass rush makes an ordinary secondary suddenly look like a group of Hall of Famers.
(How and why people refuse to understand this is beyond Joe’s realm of comprehension.)
However, rookie defensive ends rarely make an impact. Oh sure, it happens. But for every Bosa brother, there are 20 Gaines Adams. The Bucs, if you haven’t heard, are Going for Two. They didn’t bring back 22+1 starters from a Super Bowl-winning team and restructured so many contracts to build for 2024.
There are other areas where rookies can have a better impact — even on a loaded team with filthy talent. But you won’t get Joe to cry if Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht drafts a pass rusher.
Let’s just say Joe trusts Licht. And for Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers to get production.

I like this lick better than the kid from Miami with all the concussions… Let him develop behind Shaq and JPP for a year or two and put 15-20 lbs of muscle on this kid and he could be a valuable asset for years to come.

Benning Potoa’e flashed more on that tape and the Bucs picked him up as a UDFA last year!

Joe, you remember that Gaines Adams’ rookie season was his best, right? He had 6 sacks and looked to be coming along. He obviously had non-football conditions and issues we didn’t know about, poor guy.

I will go back to podcast to listen to why Sean Sullivan from the car place that Ira bought Bronco or Escape at says–he educates himself and felt Tryon was the best pick.

Christian Barmore, DL, Alabama would be a great pick for us. Suh is not getting any younger, and this guy can rush + stop the run.

I still think the most likely side for a rookie to impact this team will be on defense. Bowles will figure out a way to get whoever it is on the field. I also agree that more bodies to absorb snaps for our veterans is a smart idea. This pick does not need to be a starter this year to be successful; we just need a contribution.

I like Tryon, but I also really like Ronnie Perkins, and we could trade back a bit and still get him. Also like Patrick Johnson from Tulane. And he could be had in the 3rd round

Gaines Adams had 6 sacks as a rookie, that’s far from a bust and 6.5 sacks the next year, he may have Under performed but those numbers are better than many top Pass rushers selected every year

Gaines Adams died of Cardimyopathy and you could tell something wasn’t right when he played the last year. Very nice guy that tried his best but didn’t have the cardiovascular reserve. Still got 12.5 sacks and made some splash plays but physically was not able to perform like in college. Too bad you are labeling him as a bust Joe because he had an underlying heart condition.

I think there is a good chance this is the pick, and I would love it. This kid hasn’t even begun to peak. He is getting better physically, and with Kacy Rodgers coaching and watching Shaq and JPP, I think this kid will be an early contributor and an eventual 10-sack guy.

Move up to #25 and get Caleb Farley CB VT, if it wasn’t for a freak weight lifting injury, he would be a Top 10 pick all day long.
If Farley is gone, Tyson Campbell CB Georgia.
With the 2nd round, Andre Cisco S Syracuse, a bigger, better, stronger Antone Winfield Jr with superior cover skills. Someone is going to have to cover Kyle Pitts twice a year.;

That’s a guy you can probably get in the 2nd or 3rd round, this is not a good 1st round pick! Same thing I told Jerry Jones about taco Charlton, when he picked him above TJ Watt! When you have a full house like the Bucs, don’t be cute, just the Tom Landry draft, best player available.
