Cam Brate Reworks Deal
April 28th, 2021UPDATED: So, where did Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht find the loose change to sign furniture-tossing, bicycle-throwing receiver Antonio Brown? Here’s a clue:
Field Yates of BSPN twittered this morning that Cam Brate reworked his deal to help. It looks like another pay cut for Brate, who agreed to a pay slash before the 2020 season, as well.
The Bucs and TE Cameron Brate have agreed to a reworked deal that clears $4.69M in cap space.
Brate gets a $2.425M signing bonus and his salary is now $1.075M in 2021, with a team option for the final two years of his deal.
Tampa clears $$ to sign AB plus other moves as needed.

You know what intrigues Joe about all of the Bucs who reworked their deals, including but not limited to park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady and Donovan Smith? That center Ryan Jensen, one of the league’s highest-paid centers, was not among them.
And remember, Jensen enters the final year of his contract. Hhhmmm?
April 28th, 2021 at 11:24 am
Is there a C/G that can be picked at 32? That would mean Jenson leaves and Brady has a 2nd year center for his final year?
April 28th, 2021 at 11:27 am
It’s also possible they could have asked Jensen to restructure and he refused.
April 28th, 2021 at 11:28 am
Dewey:
There are a couple of good centers in second- and third-rounds that can be had (Creed Humphrey, Josh Myers and a small school guy — ahem — Quinn Mienerz).
Joe wouldn’t touch that brittle Alabama center with a 10-foot pole.
April 28th, 2021 at 11:29 am
What’s your plan for back up, and future QB Joe, Griffin? Draft a center for next year good move. I hope he has a QB besides Brady to snap the ball to.
April 28th, 2021 at 11:29 am
You are catching on, grasshopper. 👍
April 28th, 2021 at 11:30 am
You may have read on a certain site (cough, cough) that the Bucs are doing serious homework on quarterbacks in the draft.
Also, there are plenty of backups that can be had that are equal to Blaine Gabbert. Think about it, is he any better/worse than Mike Glennon?
April 28th, 2021 at 11:31 am
An early pick for a C who can also play guard seems likely at no. 2 or 3.
April 28th, 2021 at 11:32 am
Licht and Greenberg are the best front office in the league. They have been ready for everything this entire offseason.
I’m starting to think the Bucs will remain competitive even past Brady.
April 28th, 2021 at 11:40 am
Brate has contributed more to this franchise than his intended replacement, 1st round draft pick OJ Howard. Bama players are busts
April 28th, 2021 at 11:44 am
You don’t know how happy this makes me. He’s a friend of a friend… getting us tickets next year!
April 28th, 2021 at 11:50 am
Since the SR Bowl…I have pretty much penciled in Quinn Meinerz (C/G) as Licht’s 2nd pick & 2022 replacement for Jensen…Though I would be very temped to target Landon Dickerson @ #32, even w/ Medicals being a risk…. Hard to come by 6’6″ 325lb OL that can play all 5 positions at a high level!!!
April 28th, 2021 at 11:50 am
@Joe,
Jensen’s contribution to keeping this team together and financially contributing is being the designated Grill Master on our team and providing delicious meats and food for all these Hog Mollies we got on this team….you know that ain’t cheap either 😂
April 28th, 2021 at 11:56 am
After last year’s playoffs and OJ goin down again, it’s too bad the bucs had to take money from Brate that he truly deserved. Brate really is a team player who still has loyalty to the bucs. I’m sure he could have gotten more with another team, but chose to not go after more money and keep the relationships he’s made in the bucs organization. It says a great deal about his character.
April 28th, 2021 at 11:56 am
Joe, is Blaine Gabbert any better/worse than Mike Glennon? Kidding, right? Glennon was awful and never actually flashed anything in the NFL other than a giraffe neck, feet of cement, and a noodle arm. Gabbert is infinitely more talented. If Glennon were to somehow mentally become the next QB Supercomputer Mind, his terrible physical ability would limit him from being anything other than a serviceable backup, which Gabbert already is.
April 28th, 2021 at 12:00 pm
Creed Humphrey has been on the top of my list for a while.
April 28th, 2021 at 12:03 pm
Kind of hard to restructure a deal with one year left on it, Joe. Quit reaching.
April 28th, 2021 at 12:04 pm
What’s going to happen first? Tom Brady retires or the Bucs hit salary cap hell?
Hopefully they happen the same offseason, we say cheers, and go into rebuild mode.
April 28th, 2021 at 12:06 pm
How hard? Bucs did just that with Tom Brady and Donovan Smith. So who exactly is “reaching” here?
April 28th, 2021 at 12:07 pm
Another injury-ridden season from OJ and I think the Bucs will throw in the Towel. Glad the Bucs added a two year option.
April 28th, 2021 at 12:11 pm
wasn’t he like 7 mill?
now he get’s 3.5 mill?
Someone clue me in, because I don’t know anyone that charitable…..he could have gotten a LOT more elsewhere.
and unless OJ’s deal is untouchable…no way I would have done that if I was Brate and OJ, the bench is getting paid while reclining.
It doesn’t make any sense.
April 28th, 2021 at 12:18 pm
Smith still had years left. Tom Brady is Tom Brady.
Again, you can’t restructure a one year deal unless you extend it. Perhaps the Bucs don’t want to pay a soon to be 31 year old center more money and more years. Perhaps the plan is to go young at C next year in order to resign Cappa. Or you can stir the pot and act like Jensen is being stubborn…
April 28th, 2021 at 12:20 pm
This is the most dedicated and heart warming football franchise in the history of the NFL. Dumpster fire to record breakers (good ones lol) in one little pandemic year. With the return of AB we are officially the most dangerous team in the NFL and obviously very dedicated to going back to back. I’m not a cryer, but damn.
April 28th, 2021 at 12:20 pm
Jensen would be 31 years old at start of 2022 season.
April 28th, 2021 at 12:22 pm
Jensen is one of those players that has infectious playing energy. He is worth every dime. And at this stage of his career, and with a SB ring already, I don’t blame him for playing hardball. Who knows, maybe he plans on retiring after 2021?
April 28th, 2021 at 12:28 pm
I hope this is only smoke and not fire in regards to Jensen. He was smashing people in the playoffs, and im not sure anyone else on the line can replace that nastiness.
April 28th, 2021 at 12:28 pm
I need a belly rub. This is outstanding. Who’s your favorite Buc? That’s an amost impossible question to answer.
April 28th, 2021 at 12:48 pm
good year to get offensive line backup/starter in the draft Jensen will regret being greedy
April 28th, 2021 at 1:05 pm
Jensen is a beast and love his attitude and play, but we do know that Brady does not like his shotgun snap. Hence why Brady changed his stance to field the snap last year for the first time in 20 years. With this being his last year on the team maybe bucs do draft a C/G in the second or third this year. I like Quinn Meinerz or Grambling States David Moore in the 4th.
April 28th, 2021 at 1:15 pm
Wonder if Brate has a no-trade clause in this reworked deal??
April 28th, 2021 at 1:17 pm
The restructure deals with D Smith and Brady involved extensions……so correct….hard to restructure a 1 year deal.
I suspect Jensen doesn’t want to extend….
JPP is another candidate for extension/restructure.
April 28th, 2021 at 1:27 pm
Alabama’s Landon Dickerson at #32? Sounds good to me.
April 28th, 2021 at 1:29 pm
right before the cappa injury, wirfs and cappa were really looking like a well oiled machine on the right side…
also marpet and smith were getting there as well as the season progressed…
maybe they feel they can let jensen ride off into the sunset and plug in some newjack, with everything else around him ultra solid…
who knows…
don’t wanna lose jensen tho – dude is a fiery dogg out there and protector of one tom brady…
he’s the tone setter right now…
April 28th, 2021 at 1:34 pm
Jensen’s an animal.
That is all.
April 28th, 2021 at 1:55 pm
So many team first guys on this roster. They all cant be. Jensen might not be interested in restructuring but that infectious attitude he brings is enough for me.
April 28th, 2021 at 1:57 pm
“You are catching on, grasshopper. 👍”
Maybe I’m reading between the lines a bit too much but this tells me Joe has some “off the record” information in his mitts.
April 28th, 2021 at 1:58 pm
Reasonable to think they feel they can go with a cheaper option at C next year. I mean, how much can you spend on an O-line?
April 28th, 2021 at 2:20 pm
Jensen is good, stop the nonsense. No reports on this at all. Will see how the draft goes, Dickerson Is a heavy option and management has done it’s due diligence. Hold your horses gentleman
April 28th, 2021 at 2:37 pm
Wasn’t Jenson a 3rd day pick?
Can we get Mienerz in 3rd round?
I’d sure prefer an edge and a corner or safety in the first 2 rounds. Not that we have holes, but we’re a bit thin there.
April 28th, 2021 at 2:51 pm
that kid q.mienerz looks like a jensen clone but a little nastier…lol..and thats hard to do…lol…
GO BUCS!!!!
April 28th, 2021 at 2:52 pm
Disagree with Joe about Dickerson from ALabama. He is the best center in the draft. However, I think the first round is too high considering his injury history.
April 28th, 2021 at 2:58 pm
Jensen is a beast.
And also a beast at Guard.
We definitely need a backup center in this draft.
Edge Rusher(LB)
Center/Guard
DT
April 28th, 2021 at 3:30 pm
Quinn Meinerz in the 2nd Rd. He will not last into the 3rd Rd.
April 28th, 2021 at 4:26 pm
I love watching everyone else’s fan go into meltdown mode.
That used to be us.
April 28th, 2021 at 4:29 pm
I like Jensen, but it’s inevitable that some of our good players leave at some point no matter how good of a job Licht has done up until now.
April 28th, 2021 at 4:36 pm
Need a cornerback in draft IMO. i like Carlton Davis but I expect because of good coaching and good defensive line play that he has a very good statistical year. That probably makes him a $15 million a year cornerback. I like him but he is not a number 1 cornerback IMO and we should not overpay him.
The best value in this years draft is not wide receivers or offensive lineman. It is with the cornerbacks. Draft Carlton Davis’ replacement. The new corner will play this year and gain experience. Cornerbacks on every team (including the Bucs) miss games in the season. Corners miss more games then any other defensive position. New England has always understood this and always loaded up on capable corners even more than defensive trench guys.
Draft one as there is strong value with this class. There are lots of guys Bowles could teach a thing or two and have them capable of playing significant minutes by the end of the season and next season as well.
April 28th, 2021 at 4:55 pm
They should’ve signed David Andrews and traded him. He resigned in NE for chump change
April 28th, 2021 at 5:22 pm
@Ben green
Why do you think that David Andrews is a fit for this Tampa Bay offensive line unit? Have you watched him play?
I remember last year all the calls for the Buc’s to sign Jason Peter’s to replace Donovan Smith. Glad the Buc’s did not do that. He was horrible for Philly and Donovan with Brady worked quite well.
April 28th, 2021 at 5:24 pm
Restructuring does not mean less $$$.
April 28th, 2021 at 5:37 pm
generally a rework of a contract involves meeting at dennys for a grand slam breakfast on a weekday morning, and carrying out a heavy ole briefcase or duffle bag of loot 🙂
#LootAndExtraBaconAtDennys
April 28th, 2021 at 5:43 pm
Draft needs this year
Corner
O-line ( center? )
Dline
Linebacker
Qb
April 28th, 2021 at 7:31 pm
I like the way you think adam! 🙂
April 28th, 2021 at 10:05 pm
Keep the troops together! The message to the NFL is clear at this point, the management, coaching staff, and players are all invested and on the same page. They are going for 2 and possibly 3. I love this, go bucs!!!
April 28th, 2021 at 10:19 pm
I was thinking that exact same thing when I heard about this and the Brown signing.
Jensen did not rework anything. He’s damn good and I would love to have him back but he should rework some thing for a couple more years after this one.
If not, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a guard/center drafted in the first three rounds
April 28th, 2021 at 10:19 pm
I believe he will be one of the one’s that takes a lesser deal to help the team. Hes been real good and I dont think they go for replacing him in the first. If they trade up it will be for a young Safety or Edge rusher. My personal opinion I feel they should trade up for a RG to shore up the O line. I cant see them going Dline I feel Suh will be here beyond this year as well as JPP whose contract will be up as well. Those 3 may take a cut in pay as they will beyond long term status. Those are the 3 needs RG, S, & LB(edge rusher & a solid young backup on the edge to complemnt Nelson on the depth chart
April 28th, 2021 at 11:44 pm
It MUST be a DL/LB
Suh – 34
Gholston – 30
JPP – 32
David – 31
Kevin Minter- 30
4 starters in the front seven on the D over 30 plus the main LB backup.
It’s going to be someone that can help in the rotation there and start in a year or 2
April 29th, 2021 at 3:34 am
Cam Brate seems to be the most team first, humble guy you’ll find in the entire NFL. Love to have him on my team.
April 29th, 2021 at 11:15 am
Some day the Bucs will wake up and realize that they need to dance with the girl they brought. Brate has over achieved and done everything for this team while the Bucs keep flirting with OJ “Potential” Howard and his brittle-@ZZ body. OJ should be looking for insurance work somewhere.
I’m sorry. He’s a bust. An injury prone bust.
