“You Would Not Know It Was Tom Brady”

Joe never gets tired of a good Tom Brady insider story.
One true Brady insider is Buccaneers quarterback coach Clyde Christensen, and Christensen is a hell of a communicator and storyteller.
The former Father Dungy offensive coordinator in Tampa and Indianapolis has been coaching since the 1970s and, of course, has been around Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.
During a visit to Colts.com, Christensen was asked what separates Manning and Brady from other quarterbacks, even great ones.
Joe thought Christensen painted a great picture.
“Their ability to do it 365 days a year. You know, the average guy gets tired. The average guy gets tired at the end of eight weeks of working on the snap count or working on the center-quarterback exchange, much less eight years,” Christensen said. “The thing I admire about them is how hard they work and they never get tired of doing the little mundane things the average people get tired of doing. They stay on their fundamentals. They make themselves study. In the summers, they’re going to take care of themselves, they’re going to put some time in. … They don’t need that three-week break. At year 21 for Tom Brady, if I showed you individual [practice video] of Super Bowl Thursday, you’d see a guy competing and working, and looking like a guy that there was one jersey left for the game and he was trying to earn it. You would not know it was Tom Brady. Peyton was the same way. Through all those years, it’s hard to do what they do week after week day after day.”
It is extraordinary to think of Brady entering the 2000 NFL Draft, sitting around with an analog flip phone waiting for phone calls because, well, general managers, coaches and agents probably hadn’t latched on to texting. Perhaps Brady killed a little time reading Al Gore’s election website.
Yet here’s Brady, still on top of the football world, grinding away and counting the days until he can bark orders at Scotty Miller to break his skinny post route more shallow on a Tampa high school field.

There will never be another Tom Brady! He was the guy who made Bill Belichick look like a genius, not the other way around.

Christensen is a solid OC or even HC for the Bucs if things get muddy in the next few years with coaching.

Tom Brady is much better than a Republican. He’s a guy that keeps his mouth shut and I wish many more follow suit. No one cares. Keep your political opinions to yourself because chances are you have fans on both sides

Brady’s 2.3 seconds.
Recall, in a recent Joe column, that Brady asked his OL to give me 2.3 seconds. That’s all I need. In that 2.3 seconds Brady must process:
1. How the pass D he anticipated may be changing.
2. Which route runner(s) are most likely to get open.
3. Should I pass to one of them – and which one.
4. Should I throw the ball away.
5. Should I take a fall to avoid the hit.
6. Should I (rarely, of course) run the ball and slide.
He processes these near instantaneous decisions better than any QB in history.
That is why he is the greatest QB (probably player) of all time. All top QBs have strong and accurate arms. But only the top few (including Peyton) have that near perfect quick decision-making ability.
2.3 seconds.

Imagine this team with a healthy OJ Howard. With a second year Vaughn and new Bernard at RB, with Fournette with a year here and wanting the ball more. With a 100% healthy Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. A healthy Alex Cappa. All of these DBs who are now confident and healthy. Shaq with no contract worries. Devin White in year 3. JPP and Suh setting the tone. Lavonte David now a Buc for life. How many ROH and Hall of Famers?
And then we add to that the return of the greatest TE in NFL history, Rob Gronkowski. Still willing to block. Two TDs in the Super Bowl.
How can anyone not be excited?????

I honestly have no idea how the elite QBs do what they do. Mind of a computer and the accuracy of a sniper.
For all the rightful praise of TB12’s work ethic and intabgibles, I am also blown away at his arm strength. Reminds me of 1993 Nolan Ryan. As compared to Peyton, who really lost his fastball at the end.

I like your post Casual Observer. I would add a few more things that Tom has to process w/i that 2.3 seconds:
1. Whether the defense is in zone, man-to-man or hybrid
2. If zone or zone hybrid, which zone or zone hybrid.
3. How will the off. play be affected by the def. player positioning w/i their defense.
4 How will it be affected by the tendencies and abilities of the individual def. player personnel themselves,
5… or by the strengths and tendencies of the receivers,
6… or by the down,
7….or by the distance,
8… or by the time left on the clock,
9… or by the score,
10…or by the likelihood of a blitz and the necessity of not being sacked,
11… and oh yeah, which receiver would it be best to throw to under all those circumstances?!!
God, it’s exhausting just thinking about it.
