The Bucs Have A Backup Quarterback!

April 20th, 2021

Busy man.

Sleepless nights are no longer a thing for Bucs fans.

The great crisis of the 2021 offseason has been resolved. Yes, the Bucs now have a backup quarterback, reports Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com.

The Bucs this morning re-signed Ryan Griffin. The long-time third-stringer will remain in Tampa Bay. Joe is confident Griffin is happy about this because he recently became engaged to a Tampa girl. No long-distance relationship for Griffin.

The Buccaneers claimed Griffin off waivers from New Orleans just before the start of the 2015 season. Though his regular-season playing time has been scarce, he has remained on the active roster or on injured reserve with Tampa Bay for all of the past six seasons. Prior to coming to the Bucs, Griffin spent most of the 2013-14 seasons on the Saints’ practice squad.

Griffin has a four career passes attempted in regular-season play, completing half of those.

Griffin is a cool story. How many guys have hung on in the NFL going on seven seasons and have only played in two games? This tells Joe that Griffin won’t be eating arthritis medicine daily and using a cane when he turns 50.

The greatest play in Griffin’s history? Escorting park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady away from prying local media after the Super Bowl boat parade when Brady was a little tipsy.

Glad to see him back. Is anyone else surprised we didn’t bring back ole Blaine? Does this mean we draft a QB now?

  2. danr Says:

this guy’s ability to stay on teams reminds me of josh johnson, was that the name of our running back up QB? the one who went to the niners eventually and backed up Kapernic?

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Makes sense….why not.

  4. Robert Says:

    Like the call!

  5. Joe Says:

    josh johnson

He was still getting work last year. Difference is, Griffin has stuck with two NFC South teams. Joe’s confident that Johnson has worn half the league’s practice uniforms.

  6. Mitch Says:

Mildly surprised. Maybe Blaine is holding out for more cash after Licht said that he could takeover for Brady once he retires?

  7. Joe Says:

    Mildly surprised.

Not Joe. Again, he got engaged to a Tampa girl couple of months ago. He didn’t want to leave. He knows Arians’ offense and Arians knows that.

Don’t think there were many teams (if any) pounding on his agent’s door.

  8. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Don’t need a superstar as a backup QB. I am sure he was Cap friendly and it helps he know the system.

  9. Mitch Says:

@Joe The move makes sense due to his familiarity the team/system, and cost. Until you wrote about it today I didn’t know he was tied to the area by his personal life.

I was mildly surprised because I thought Blaine would re-sign first because of Licht’s comments earlier in the offseason.

Lastly I found it interesting that if he Griffin is on the roster in 2021 he will be longest tenured QB (7 seasons) in Bucs history.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Glad to see Ryan back, but I have a hunch we’ll also see Gabbert in a Buc uniform at some point this season.

  11. 813bucboi Says:

looks like we’ll be drafting Trask….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  12. Winny Testaverde Says:

Good for Griffin! I’m a bit jealous of his longevity vs actual output. Chaperoning Tipsy Tom was indeed a clutch moment in Bucs history/lore. Brady must like him…

  13. D-Rome Says:

The backup QB has historically been the most popular player on the team.

  14. Hodad Says:

When I first saw the headline I just assumed they resigned Gabbert. Maybe they still will, but I’m thinking now they might have a QB in mind to draft, and I don’t mean a 1st round QB. I thought Ryan would be the odd man out when they pick a Trask, or Mond in this years draft. Maybe Gabbert is the odd man out now.

  15. Your Mom Says:

    yay?

  16. Couch Fan Says:

Im just confused why we keep bringing a guy back who the coaches repeatedly refuse to let play… Sure knowing the system is a good thing but if you never let him touch the field, whats the point. Seems like a wasted roster spot.

  17. Joe Says:

Im just confused why we keep bringing a guy back who the coaches repeatedly refuse to let play

Why would you want to play a third-string quarterback? Unless you are tanking for a draft pick in which case Joe is fully behind.

  18. Oneilbuc Says:

813 . We finally agree on something because I want Trask as well. But you just might change your mind about Trask because I want Trask lol 😆 😂 🤣 !!

  19. Bucanero Says:

He definitely showed up when he had to. He has Tom’s back

  20. Will Says:

This guy has been here longer than any QB. I’ve been wondering for years if we’ve actually had our future QB on the roster. Heck how many coaches has this guy out lasted?

  21. bucnole Says:

    meh
We should make a play for a “real” backup with some future potential
I like Griffin – but Im not confident he is anything more than a career BU
The problem with not finding a young future starter soon – is you waste the Brady and Coaching staff effect that Joe mentions – the window is closing on both and we need a solid prospect to absorb as much as he can – and SOON

  22. martinii Says:

Good news, common sense dictates you have to have a back-up. Sort of solidifies the notion that we will go for one in the draft. One thing that bothers me over the years is guys like Doug, Vinny, Steve Trent, who won with admittedly better teams. There is still one Buc reject out there that could cause us trouble if he could control his INT’s. Opportunity, right coach, maturity, and age. We better not lose sight of life without Brady.

  23. theodore Says:

“January 15, 2021: San Francisco 49ers signed QB Josh Johnson to a Reserve/Future contract.”

Holy smoke, that guys is in fact still active. Good for him.

  24. Bird Says:

They love gabbert for some reason. Not the biggest fan
But you have to think gabbert will be back
    So 3 qbs signed likely?

I think this is a sign bucs are not going qb in draft at all

They could have waited until after draft and signed griffin if no qb drafted
Not like any other team wants griffin
Sure they can cut but their is still financial payments to be made …so?

  25. Bird Says:

    There^

  26. Joe Says:

I think this is a sign bucs are not going qb in draft at all

Or, Griffin just got a promotion?

  27. scotthad2 Says:

Everytime I’ve seen Griffin play, he’s been pretty good. Now I know he has only played a few exhibition games, but he had the best stats every preseason it seemed. I think, if hed had the chance, he can be a pretty good to hold the team together if Brady gets hurt. Gabbert I’ve not seen what the coaches see. But I don’t see practices either.

  28. Capt.Tim Says:

    Scothad2
Agreed. Everytime Griffin on the field, he looked great!
Gabbertt actually has talent- always did. But he took soooo much of a beatingin Jville, that he may be permanently shellshocked. Poor guy looks that way, in every photo.
I dont think the Bucs are planning to draft a QB. After the first two(Trevor, Zack), I think this is a terrible Draft for QB. Just really bad QBs left in the Board.
I think the Bucs are waiting to see what Vet WB gets released. If nobody they like- they still have Blaine.
Next year is the year to draft a QB.
    Or
Rodgers is definitely leaving Green Bay next year. When Brady Hangs them up,We could Slide Rodgers to play in the leagues best offense.
    Just a thought.

  29. Cainishere Says:

We should draft a QB at 32 to have the 5th year option. The Bucs kick the can down the road maneuvers have us in a position that we really have no choice but to select a QB

    LOL!!!…we finally agree…

i think Brady would love teaching Trask…BL too….he’s an underdog coming out of college just like Brady….Trask very well could be there in the 6th round….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  31. Allbuccedup Says:

Why sign a backup that’s 31 years old and only thrown 4 passes in is entire career? Gotta believe the Bucs are looking to drafting a QB, maybe at 32 or so.

  32. Hope springs eternal Says:

Cheap insurance. They needed a body that was low cost. And he knows the system. He is cheap insurance until after the draft.

  33. August 1976 Buc Says:

The only thing Griffin has done of note in Tampa, is he guided a plastered Brady from the Boat on land after being out in the parade. Hopefully, that is all that Ryan does again next year lol. GO BUCS!!!

  34. Bucsfanman Says:

The most debated career, non-throwing back-up QB in Bucs history. If he can help us win one SB on the bench, surely he can help us win TWO on the bench!

  35. PSL Bob Says:

Griffin has been around for the last 3 Bucs coaches (Smith, Koetter, Arians) and six full seasons. And, he’s coming back for No. 7. The kid’s got something that provides at least a little confidence that he can perform if called upon. If he didn’t he would have been cut long ago. He knows the system and has a year under Brady’s tutelage. So, he should be a reliable plug-in if needed. Nevertheless, I’d still draft a QB in this year’s draft.

  36. Dbbuc711 Says:

Not surprised after I saw last night that Gabbert wanted more than the Bucs were offering.

  37. Mike28277 Says:

Back up QB and bullpen catchers are the greatest gigs in sports.

  38. Swampbuc Says:

    Griff back is great.

  39. Capt.Tim Says:

When Brady retires(years from now, please!), I doubt Evans, Godwin, etc- are gonna want to play with a rookie.

And I doubt anyone who thinks about it, will believe that either

  40. DaBux Says:

Thank Goodness! It would be horrible for TB12 to fall into Tampa Bay after a parade.

  41. Steve M.] Says:

Capt. Tim is right. Go for Roger’s when TB12 retires.

  42. Steve M.] Says:

Is there a better crop of draft QBs to choose from next year ?
