Man, Joe loves the offseason. So much time to watch condensed NFL games and catch up on various Bucs-related things.
This spring is soothingly special because Joe sleeps at night now that the Bucs have exited The Lost Decade with a Super Bowl ring, and a stress-free draft lies ahead.
One thing on Joe’s to-do list was hearing Scotty Miller’s appearance on Greeny, the podcast hosted by Mike Greenberg of BSPN (also known as ESPN).
Predictably, Greenberg went for the post-Super Bowl hot take when he asked Miller if he feels he’s been underestimated as receiver in is career because his skin color is white. Thankfully, Miller didn’t take the bait.
There wasn’t much new to be gleaned from the interview, but later in the podcast Greenberg shared data from the statistical gremlins who work for his network. And that got Joe’s attention.
In turns out Tom Brady has never averaged as many yards per completion in his entire career — Randy Moss included — as he did with Miller throughout the 2020 season.
That’s damn impressive, something Miller can tell his kids one day. And Joe doesn’t consider Miller’s 37 receptions (regular season and playoffs) to be a too-small sample size.

Scotty is great and I want to see his role expand in the offense. I just hope he can hold up in the NFL because he is only 175lbs soaking wet.

Miller is perfect for brady, a guy who can get open using the whole field. His route running should take a huge step forward this year. Tommy is going to have a blast with this guy

The one thing with scotties game seems to be short area quickness. I cant recall may times where he has space and makes people miss. He more often runs by then catches the ball.

Wow that is actually shocking to me. All those Brady to Moss mega bombs and our own little scooter averaged more yards per catch!! Who woulda thunk it ?

What Brown and Miller bring to the table are two entirely different games.
Miller is deep speed, a threat that keeps safeties honest and opens up shorter and medium routes. And, yes, he can get behind the defense for big plays. His route tree needs a lot of work.
Behavioral and emotional issues aside, Brown is an excellent route runner, all the routes, not just a deep threat.
Both have important roles in the Buc O, and both have completely different games from each other.

If you thought last season was good, wait until this one. Now that he’s gotten used to playing with the GOAT, all he has to do is break, cut, and boom wide open. TB12 will read it and open up the field. Scooter IS the gamebreaker we have been waiting for in Bucsland.

@Natron: Miller and Edelman have little, if anything, in common.
Edel got open from fast footwork and short-space suddenness, which made him a fantastic slot guy for Brady (like Wes Welker and Amendola were, the same kind of receiver.)
He never had blistering deep-threat speed as Miller does, and I’ve not seen Miller show short-space suddenness of any of the three Brady slots that were so effective.

So, the obvious question from the article is…….What was Miller’s average yards per reception?
Well, the answer is 15.2 yards on 33 regular season receptions.

Scotty stretches the field and opens it up for everyone else underneath. Guarantee that this year teams will be paying even more attention to Scotty Miller than last year because they all saw what he and Brady are capable of. That will even open things up more. But if everyone remembers this offense really didn’t start clicking until we started to have an effective running game with play action off of it. I hope the Bucs don’t forget that and start the year off threatening with the run and a lot more play action.

Miller is as sure-handed as they come, with the possible exception of Brate. Both can handle those quick slants. Both Godwin and Evans drop more passes than either Miller or Brate. However, in fairness, Godwin and Evans typically are battling defenders when they catch the ball. Miller just runs past the defenders. What a lineup. Evans, Godwin, Brate, Miller, OJ, and haven’t even mentioned Tyler Johnson who came on strong last year. Oh year, how about Giovani coming out of the backfield now. I’m telling you, the NFL better beware!

AB is good but Imo he’s a ticking time bomb with plenty baggage…Besides, Licht has a knack for finding good WR’s in the draft…
Yes to Brown for the right price; if not, doesn’t matter to me I was never a fan…I’d rather see more of Scotty Miller and Tyler Johnson…Also wouldn’t mind if the Bucs drafted this WR/RB hybrid Rondale Moore out of Purdue…Brady would love him…

thank you cobraboy, for being a reasonalble opinion in this chaos. thinking that antonio brown isn’t a major force that changes the way a defense has to play us is just being blind. i understand the off the field stuff, but on field, he is a game changer, even if he’s not putting up huge numbers

Stats especially when there is not even a body of work require a much closer look. SM had shown explosive straight line acceleration and top end speed, but he is so slight he can be easily disrupted running the route.
I have finally made my draft wish and I am now on the Elijah Moore bandwagon, his skill set is not on the Bucs roster, he can both make plays with his YAC his threat on the field will command close attention by the DB’s opening up for plays elsewhere. Despite his weight a quote about him I love is that he is as tough as a burnt steak.
Folks we don’t have that a SM is not that!

Exactly. He might be a one trick pony but we still f#cking love our one trick pony. He cannot be a consistent outside WR week to week. You don’t see him running short routes over the middle cus he can’t see over the line. A weakness at WR depth many don’t see. Licht, BA, and Tom can scout a nice WR in the fourth or fifth.

I don’t get it. His average last year was 7.6 yards and his high was in 2011 at 8.6. I’m I missing something here?

We know Tom Brady loves football and loves guys who contribute. I wonder if he knows (and is secretly pleased) that Scotty Miller was also a 6th round selection.
Also, I wonder what Scotty’s playing weight currently is. The Bucs still have him as 174 pound, exactly what he was the first day he was on the roster. (They do the same for everyone. Vita Vea is still listed as 347 pounds which is exactly what he was listed on day one also.)

Player’s weight will always be listed from what they weighed-in at the NFL Combine. Teams, NFL do not update their weight for the public

Brady obviously has an interest in giving SM opportunities and Scotty has done well and had plays designed for him just not click. At the end of the day Brady knows every position can be improved. SM can’t hold a candle to the top receivers in the draft. There is a reason SM is a work in project, hope he can make a huge leap in production this year because he is going to have to.
Compared to most of the Playoff teams the Bucs lack explosive take it to the house players. That single improvement is what the offense needs to bring to the field!

Brown did next to nothing during the regular season. He literally had 2-3 good plays the entire time.
The only reason he did so well in the playoffs is because he got more opportunities as a result of the others being double teamed.
Now he feels like he deserves more money, and we all know what Brown does when he thinks he deserves more money and doesn’t get it.
Hard pass.

AB is the type of explosive player that the offense needs. The coaches have seen him in practice and know if he still has his prime time game . I think they see diminished skill but he may still be the best option, after the draft and post draft release of veteran WR’s.

Yes, he needs more work out of the slot, hitting him in stride on slants and outs to utilize that speed, other than just go routes.
Hard to believe he averaged more yards per catch than Moss. All I can picture is Moss catching balls 40 yards downfield that year

If AB don’t like the $$$ we are offering him, he can take the money paid to him last season and call Uber to get him out of here and off to wherever he wants to be.
Miller needs to add some upper body muscle weight. He often gets manhandled coming off the line. If they miss him their mistake, he makes them pay. If he had some extra muscle he could get jammed and jam back and then use that speed to leave them there looking for their jocks. It is AWESOME! To see those CB’s he BEAT for a TD, look at him after the catch.

I like Scotty but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. How many receptions in PO’s and SB? Obviously one huge on it GB. I’ve read AB who and the next Edleman? C’mon I doubt Miller is ever a pro bowler and if Scotty played like Edleman they would of carted him off in a body bag after the 3rd game. I hope he developes into a more consistent WR and becomes more diverse but he ain’t close to being there yet. He WILL NOT ever be that across the middle guy. Sorry to those that drool over this guy a #3 or 4 at best.
