Anthony Muñoz Explains What Bucs Got In Giovani Bernard

The football obsessed who watch Bengals preseason games know that Anthony Muñoz is one of the more astute analysts in the game, in addition to being a Hall of Fame left tackle.
So of course, Joe was interested to hear Muñoz’s take on the Bucs signing longtime Bengals running back Giovani Bernard this week.
Visiting Sirius XM NFL Radio yesterday, Muñoz was not shy about saying the Bengals’ loss in the Buccaneers’ gain.
“I tell you what, [Bernard] is consistent, a team player, ‘just tell me what you want me to do and I’m gonna get it done,’ Muñoz said. “Running outside, you got me running between the tackles, if you want me catching the football.’ That’s what they’re getting, a guy that is just all about doing what the team needs him to do and being consistent. So when I saw that he was going to Tampa Bay, I’m thinking, Oh my goodness. They’ve got [Ronald] Jones. They got [Leonard] Fournette. Now they got a very, very good running back in Gio. … He did a phenomenal job here in the eight years he was here.”
Muñoz acknowledged that Bernard plays with a lot of heart, and he also added that the Bengals changing offensive line coaches this offseason was a critical — and positive — move for the team, which illustrated for Joe how great of a challenge it’s been to be a running back in Cincinnati in recent years.
The rich get richer. And this year it’s the Buccaneers.

Two ACL tears and eight seasons in the NFL later and Bernard is toast. 3.2 YPC last year, 3.4 the year before… then 3.8 in 2018. Was Jacquizz Rodgers no longer available? Once upon a time, Gio was a decent NFL player… not anymore.

Only issue I see with signing Bernard is that the 2021 RB cupboard looks quite full & will lead the FO to believe it has no room for someone like Etienne at the bottom of the 1st (if still on the board).
Gio is a gamer & no one should be too upset that he was picked up for 2021.
But the RB room only has Vaughn locked in for 2022 & beyond…W/ Bernard, Jones & Fournette all UFA after 2021.

I love the pick up. We needed a guy who can catch and gain YAC, thats exactlly what Gio is. Also he looked good last year, check out the highlights, he still has a burst. I am not concerned AT All about next years RB room with just vaughn. Bucs could draft a RB high or sign one cheap(RBS are devalued and cheap these days) and draftees are quick to adjust to NFL. GREAT MOVE BUCS

We can stop with the Etienne talk. I like him a lot too but there is absolutely no reason to take a running back.
Ronald Jones turns 24 later in the year.
Fournette just turned 26.
Vaughn is 23
Bernard is 29
This position that was a weakness just a year and a half ago is a full on strength and filled with youth. I just can’t imagine they don’t draft D line/LB, O line, WR/returner in the first 4 rounds.
I keep seeing mock drafts where DT Barimore from Alabama drops to the beginning of the second round. I have seen him play three times and he can be absolutely dominant. I cannot imagine they would pass him up if he is available. There’s also some damn good edge rushers DE/LB but some of them may be around at the end of round two.

I am really sick of hearing about them picking up another wide receiver, like Edelman,. They do not need to mortgage any more of the future.
Get a receiver/returner in round 3-5 and call it a day.
Give Johnson and Miller more playing time!!

Agree with David about a WR/returner in a middle round of the draft. Seems to be a guy from UCLA that fits that.

Giovani Bernard was just a replacement for McCoy. He definitely will not start and most likely the 4th RB after Jones, Lenny, and Vaughn.

I was a Bengal fan when he was dominating the trenches. In Home ec I made orange and black shorts that had his name ironed on them. If the internet was around those days I’d probably still be a Bengal fan but after 7-8 years of crap and knowing almost nothing about them since I wasn’t local I decided to switch teams the year the Bucs got their new uniforms. It’s hard to root for a team when you know almost nothing about them, can’t learn anything. You can’t get emotionally involved. Thankfully the internet and more specifically Joe Bucs Fan I was able to stay emotionally involved with the Bucs during our lost decade.

Alabama Bucs fan… No, he’s going to be a third down back- he can block and catch. Jones and Lenny will be splitting the main duties. I’m hoping Jones can develop into a better blocker and receiver out of the backfield but it doesn’t sound like he’s going to get the chance anytime soon.
The other reason for the move… 17 games. Running backs are just not durable. There’s a few that are but do you need for good ones

Bengals have a Bottom 3 OLine in the league. Literally nothing to run behind. Hes going to be awesome for us against tired defenses.
